The only Hindu temple in the East of England, serving around 13,500 Hindus across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, and parts of Lincolnshire, is facing possible closure after the Peterborough City Council decided to sell the property it occupies to pay off municipal debts.

The Bharat Hindu Samaj Temple, located in the New England Complex in Peterborough, has been a religious and cultural centre since its establishment in 1984. The temple management submitted a bid before the council’s Monday night deadline to purchase the entire complex, which consists of seven units.

Temple president Kishor Ladwa said the temple had initially reached an agreement in April with the council to buy the property for £1.3 million, which included a £504,000 discount recognising the social value of its community services. However, in September, the council informed them that other buyers had emerged and that it could no longer offer the complex at the previously agreed amount, asking the temple to increase its bid. The council has not revealed the identities of the other bidders but has suggested that they may be community organisations.

According to Ladwa, the temple has been negotiating with the council for 14 years to secure ownership, but the terms have repeatedly changed. He said the temple wished to avoid becoming a tenant under a new owner and added that despite their willingness to sign a purchase agreement, the council never provided a legally binding contract.

The temple functions as a major community hub, particularly for the elderly. It hosts weekly luncheons, health workshops for dementia and diabetes, and cultural activities such as Bollywood dance, yoga, Zumba, and language classes in Hindi and Gujarati. Members of the management committee have said the facility helps reduce social isolation among older members of the community and saves public funds by providing essential social services.

Temple representatives also noted that the idols consecrated in a week-long ceremony years ago could not easily be relocated if they are forced to vacate the site. Petitions have since gained thousands of signatures urging the council to halt the sale.

Peterborough City Council cabinet member for finance and corporate governance, Councillor Mohammed Jamil, stated that while the council recognises the anxiety among the Hindu community, it must sell community assets on the open market to ensure the best value for taxpayers. He added that if the Bharat Hindu Samaj Temple is not selected as the preferred bidder, its tenancy rights would transfer to the new owner, and it would continue to have legal protections under the Landlord and Tenant Act of 1954.

On 5 February 2025, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) took action against 18 employees for participating in non-Hindu religious activities while also taking part in TTD festivals and rituals. This move was backed by a legal precedent set in November 2023 when the Andhra Pradesh High Court upheld Rule 3, affirming that trust boards have the authority to mandate service conditions, including the requirement that employees follow the Hindu religion.

In this article, we will look at seven court rulings in India regarding the employment of Hindu or non-Hindu individuals in temples.

#1 SC Rules Against Caste And Religious Barriers In Temple Appointments

On 16 December 2024, the Supreme Court heard the case Vinod Kumar M.P. and Ors. v. The Malabar Devaswom Board & Ors. [Special Leave to Appeal (C) No(s). 29188/2024], filed against The Malabar Devaswom Board. The Supreme Court dismissed the Special Leave Petition challenging the Kerala High Court’s decision to set aside the appointment of non-hereditary trustees of Sree Vairamcode Bhagavathi Devaswom by the Malabar Devaswom Board. The Bench, comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and Aravind Kumar, clarified that the ruling would not affect the petitioners’ future eligibility. The Court emphasized that caste, race, religion, or language cannot be barriers to appointments and that non-hereditary trustee selections must follow strict fairness principles. The petition alleged political favoritism in trustee appointments, which the Court addressed by reinforcing merit-based selection criteria.

#2 Madras HC Upholds Hindu-Only Hiring Policy in Temple-Run College

On 26 November 2024, the Madras High Court dismissed a petition challenging an employment notification by Arulmigu Kapaleeswarar Arts and Science College, a self-financing institution run by the Arulmigu Kapaleeswar Temple. The petitioner, A. Suhail, a Muslim, argued that restricting appointments to Hindus violated constitutional provisions on equal opportunity. However, Justice Vivek Kumar Singh ruled that the college, as a religious institution governed by the HR&CE Act, could require employees to be Hindu. The Court held that Article 16(5) permitted such restrictions and dismissed the petition for lacking merit.

#3 AP High Court Upholds Termination of Temple Employee for Religious Conversion

On 17 November 2024, the Andhra Pradesh High Court upheld the termination of an employee of Sri Bramarambha Mallikarjuna Swamy Varla Devasthanam after he converted to Christianity. Justice Harinath N ruled that the termination was valid under Article 16(5) of the Constitution and Rule 3 of the Andhra Pradesh Religious Institutions Service Rules, which require temple employees to be Hindu. The petitioner argued he had not converted, but the Court found evidence of his marriage in a church under Christian rites. The petition was dismissed, affirming the temple’s right to enforce religious requirements.

#4 SC Allows Govt Employees to Manage Temples in Absence of Trustees

On 5 October 2022, the Supreme Court upheld the Tamil Nadu government’s deputation of government employees to manage temples due to a lack of trustees. Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and Hima Kohli ruled that the move was in the temples’ best interest under the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act, 1959. Petitioner T.R. Ramesh argued that only trustees could appoint temple staff, but the Court found the deputation necessary to prevent administrative chaos. The Court ordered Tamil Nadu to provide data on temples without trustees and those managed by government officers.

#5 Hyderabad HC Stays Termination of Non-Hindu TTD Employees

On 22 February 2018, the Hyderabad High Court halted Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) from terminating 36 Muslim and Christian employees. Justices Ramesh Ranganathan and K. Vijaya Lakshmi questioned why authorities enforced Rule 9(6) after two decades, despite no mention during recruitment. The court criticized TTD’s sudden stance and stated it would review the constitutional validity of the rule. The bench emphasized that TTD runs institutions beyond temples and warned that executive officers responsible for hiring non-Hindus should also be held accountable.

#6 Madras HC Rules That Hindu Temples Can Choose Hindu-Owned Security Agencies

On 4 October 2011, the Madras High Court ruled that Hindu temples cannot be compelled to hire security agencies owned by non-Hindus. Justice K. Chandru dismissed a petition challenging a tender by Subhramaniya Swamy Temple, stating that temple management has the right to decide on sensitive matters like security. The court cited Section 10 of the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act, which mandates temple servants must be Hindus. It rejected claims of discrimination, emphasizing that religious reforms must come from within the faith, not through judicial intervention.

#7 Karnataka HC: No Blanket Ban on Non-Hindus in Endowment Offices

On 15 December 2020, the Karnataka High Court dismissed petitions seeking to bar non-Hindus from working under the Commissioner for Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments. The Bench of Chief Justice Abhay Oka and Justice S. Vishwajith Shetty ruled that the 1997 Act does not prohibit non-Hindus from holding certain posts. It noted that roles like data entry or supervision are not directly linked to religious administration. The court also rejected objections to a Muslim officer’s name on a temple festival invite, stating that secular governance includes facilitating religious events across faiths.

Kachirayapalayam police have arrested a church priest for pasting handwritten Bible verses and provocative slogans, such as “Jesus coming soon,” on the walls surrounding several temples in the area. The scriptures also included a warning that the idols would be removed and replaced.

The incident occurred on the night of November 12th when an unknown individual pasted handwritten Bible verses on chart paper and affixed them to the walls of Shiva, Pillayar, and Perumal temples in Kachirayapalayam, a village near Karadisithur in Kallakurichi District.

The messages also included a warning about removing the idols and replaced, along with a statement titled “A Condemnation to the Commons,” signed by “Anniya/Stranger.”

Following a complaint, Inspector Yelumalai and his team launched an investigation, identifying the suspect as a 34-year-old church priest named Christ Raj, the son of Santhanam, from Kachirayapalayam.

According to the police, Christ Raj, who trained as a priest, established a church near his home and actively preached his faith. However, he was frustrated by the low turnout at his church, as most locals preferred to attend the nearby temples. In retaliation, Christ Raj allegedly vandalized temple idols last month and, on the night in question, wrote and posted religious verses on the temple walls. He was arrested in connection with the incident.

In the wake of the Muthyalamma temple vandalism in Secunderabad, allegations have emerged linking the perpetrator to Zakir Naik and hardline Islamist groups. The attack, which occurred early on October 14, 2024, has ignited protests and communal tension in the area. Locals, enraged by the desecration of the Goddess Durga idol, apprehended the suspect, who is in critical condition following a mob assault.

Islamist Attacks Muthyalamma temple

Secunderabad, Telangana, witnessed unrest after an incident of temple vandalism early on Monday morning, 14 October 2024. The desecration occurred at the Muthyalamma temple in Kummariguda, triggering widespread outrage and protests by locals, as well as prompting a political and communal outcry.

The incident unfolded around 4:35 AM when a man from another faith allegedly entered the temple premises near the Regional Passport Office and damaged the idol of the temple deity, Goddess Durga. A local resident, who was out for his morning walk, noticed suspicious activity at the temple and raised the alarm after spotting the vandalism.

Locals quickly gathered at the site and apprehended the suspect. They dragged the man out onto the road and beat him up before handing him over to the police. Videos circulating online show the angry mob pinning him to the ground, raining blows on him and kicking him until he fell unconscious.

It is alleged that the Islamist who vandalized the Muthyalamma temple was a follower of Zakir Naik and other hardline Islamists. The accused was also said to be involved in similar incidents in Mumbai in 2022 where he entered a Ganesh pandal wearing footwear and even attacked locals.

The suspect was later taken to a city hospital, where he is said to be in critical condition. Additionally, there are allegations that he was passed off as a “mentally unstable person” by various media and machinery.

The police arrived shortly after raising the alarm and took the man into custody. He was later identified as being in his mid-30s, with reports suggesting he had migrated to the city from Maharashtra only a few days before the incident. The mob assault critically injured the man and is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a city hospital, where his condition remains critical.

Following the incident, the authorities intensified security around the temple to prevent further unrest and maintain law and order. A case was registered at the Market Police Station based on a complaint filed by a resident, Chelmela Kiran Kumar, aged 33. The FIR charges include trespassing, breaking, obstructing public servants from carrying out their duties, fabricating evidence, offending religious sentiments, and culpable homicide.

The investigation focuses on determining the motive behind the vandalism and whether others were involved. The police are actively questioning witnesses, reviewing CCTV footage, and analyzing evidence to gain more insights into the circumstances leading to the act of desecration.

The vandalism of the temple idol sparked widespread outrage among locals and worshippers, who gathered at the site in large numbers to protest the incident. The demonstration saw an influx of devotees and residents from various parts of Hyderabad, who demanded immediate and stringent action against those responsible for the sacrilege.

Authorities deployed additional police personnel to manage the crowd and quell rising tensions. Despite these efforts, the incident stirred anger within the community, with many expressing frustration over what they perceived as a failure to protect places of worship from acts of desecration.

Meanwhile, the Secunderabad police confirmed that they were closely monitoring the situation and taking all necessary precautions to prevent any escalation. The investigation remains ongoing, focusing on uncovering the exact motive behind the temple desecration and ensuring those involved face legal consequences.

Over the past several years, Hindu temples across the United States have faced a disturbing trend of vandalism and hate crimes. Below is a timeline of nine major incidents, reflecting a growing concern over Hinduphobia and religious intolerance.

1. Swami Narayan Temple, Sacramento, California

A Hindu temple in Sacramento, California, was vandalized for the second time in 10 days, on 26 September 2024, with anti-Hindu slogans like “Hindus go back” spray-painted on its walls.

The incident mirrors a similar attack on a Swaminarayan temple in New York on September 16, where anti-India slogans were written, and suspicion of Khalistani involvement arose. In Sacramento, the temple’s pipeline was also damaged. Local officials, including California Assembly member Stephen Nguyen, visited the temple after the attack. The Indian Consulate in New York and U.S. leaders condemned these hate crimes, calling them cowardly and deeply concerning for religious freedom in America.

2. BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, New York

The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Melville, New York, was vandalized by extremists on the night of September 16, 2024. The temple was defaced with offensive slogans, including “Fuck Modi,” “Modi is Terrorist,” and “Hindustan Murdabad,” with a derogatory gap in the word “Hindustan” implying insult to Hindus.

The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha condemned the act and prayed for the perpetrators to overcome their hatred. Local authorities were informed, and the Indian Consulate in New York also condemned the vandalism, urging U.S. law enforcement to take swift action against those responsible for the hate crime.

3. Vijay’s Sherawali Temple, Hayward, California

The Vijay’s Sherawali Temple in Hayward, California, was vandalized with pro-Khalistani slogans such as “Khalistan Zindabad” and “Modi is terrorist.” The incident, which occurred in late December 2023, was confirmed by the temple administration on January 2, 2024. Police have classified it as a hate crime. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) noted that this attack followed similar defacement of the Swaminarayan Mandir and a theft at the Shiv Durga temple in the same area. HAF is working closely with temple leaders, the Alameda Police Department, and the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division to investigate the crime.

4. SMVS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Newark, California

On January 2, 2024, the SMVS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Newark, California, was vandalized with anti-India graffiti, allegedly by pro-Khalistan activists. The graffiti was discovered by a nearby devotee, who promptly reported it to local authorities. Temple spokesperson Bhargav Raval expressed shock at the display of anti-Indian sentiments on the temple walls. The Newark Police Service has initiated a targeted investigation, with Police Captain Jonathan Arguello stating that they will review surveillance footage from nearby residences to piece together the events leading to the vandalism.

5. Shri Omkarnath Temple, Brazos Valley, Texas

On January 5, 2024, the Shri Omkarnath Temple in Brazos Valley, Texas, was burglarized, shocking the local Indian community. Burglars broke in through a side window, stealing the temple’s donation box and a safe containing valuables. Board member Srinivasa Sunkari described the incident as an invasion of privacy and reported that the priest and his family, who live nearby, are safe. Security footage captured the suspect bypassing the shrine to access the donation box. The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the burglary, while temple officials are taking extra precautions for safety and security.

6. Shree Umiya Dham, New Jersey

On October 30, 2022, the Shree Umiya Dham Hindu Temple in Edison, New Jersey, was vandalized with “Free Palestine” graffiti. The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) condemned the act, linking it to a Hinduphobic narrative promoted by certain academics who portray Hindus as “colonizers.” CoHNA noted that the temple had previously joined over 50 organizations in opposing a Hinduphobic resolution by the Teaneck Democratic Municipal Committee. This incident has heightened concerns within the Hindu community in New Jersey, prompting calls for swift justice against the perpetrators.

7. Swaminarayan Temple, Louisville, Kentucky

Between Sunday night (October 29) and Tuesday morning (October 31), the Swaminarayan Temple in Louisville, Kentucky, was vandalized in a hate crime. Miscreants sprayed black paint on the deity, broke windows, and left inappropriate messages and graffiti on the walls. A knife was found stabbed in a chair, and cabinets were emptied. The police are investigating, but there are currently no suspects. Local officials, including Mayor Greg Fischer and Kentucky State Representative Nima Kulkarni, condemned the act, emphasizing its impact on the Indian American community and the need for compassion and respect among all religions.

8. The VHP Temple, North Carolina

In North Carolina, a sign for a planned Hindu temple was shot at, resulting in over 60 holes, between noon on 4 July 2015 and 1 PM on 8 July 2015. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office reported that empty shell casings consistent with birdshot were found nearby, indicating a shotgun was used. The vandalism, which caused approximately $200 in damage, is being investigated as vandalism, and no suspects have been identified. The Om Hindu Organization of North Carolina, which plans to build the temple, expressed disappointment but remains committed to their project despite the incident.

9. North Texas Hindu Mandir, Dallas, Texas

In a disturbing incident, the North Texas Hindu Mandir in Lake Highlands, Dallas, was vandalized, with symbols of devil worship and the tag of the Mara Salvatrucha gang painted on its door and nearby structures. The attack occurred on a Monday, shocking both the Hindu community and local residents, some of whom offered assistance in cleaning the damage. Krishna Singh, a temple board member, expressed deep sadness over the vandalism. The Dallas police gang unit is investigating the case. Universal Society of Hinduism president Rajan Zed called for better education about Hinduism to counter such attacks.

Following a protest by Hindu Munnani cadres, a Christian marriage scheduled to be held in a Hindu temple controlled by the Hindu Religious Charitable and Endowments (HR&CE) department was halted.

On May 8th, Hindu Munnani state spokesperson and Chennai city president AT Elangovan on his Twitter handle posted an image of Chrisitain wedding invitation scheduled to be held in Thiruvetteesvarar temple in Chennai controlled by HR&CE.

The invitation, titled “Holy Marriage Invitation,” states that the wedding of groom Ajith Kumar and bride Kowsalya is scheduled for June 1st at Thiruvetteeswarar temple on Wanals road in Egmore, Chennai. The invitation also featured an image of baby Jesus with his mother Mary and Father Joseph.

Posting the image of invitation on his Twitter handle, AT Elangovan asked, “Is the temple just a marriage hall for Christians in DMK to get married? Action should be taken against the employee who gave permission (for Christian marriage in Hindu temple)”

Today (May 9th), Hindu Munnani workers assembled in front of the Thiruvetteeswarar temple to protest against the permission given to the Christian marriage. They demanded that the permission granted for Christian marriage be revoked and that action be taken against those responsible.

Following protest by Hindu Munnani cadres, the Executive Officer of the Thiruvetteeswarar temple issued a clarification, stating that the Christian marriage scheduled to be held at the temple has been cancelled.

The clarification issued by the Executive Officer Gangadevi of the Thiruvetteeswarar temple read, “Thiruvetteeswarar temple in Triplicane is managed by the HR&CE department. Only Hindus will be allowed to marry in this temple. As you stated in your letter, the marriage between Ajith Kumar and Kowsalya is not of the Hindu religion, and thus the marriage scheduled for June 1st is cancelled. We would like to bring to your attention that the marriage scheduled for June 1st in the temple has been cancelled in the interest of the temple administration and the public interest of the devotees as the marriage activities were found to be in violation of HR&CE rules.”

In a shocking incident, miscreants erected a Christian holy cross on a stone flagstaff of a Hindu temple in Vizhupuram.

The alleged incident occurred at the Garudaazhwar temple in Gingee, near Vizhupuram district. The images of the temple’s flagpost with the Christian holy cross are now going viral on social media, with many calling for the arrest of those involved in this disgusting activity.

In this situation, the Hindu Munnani district president of Vizhupuram SV Subramani has filed a complaint with the Inspector of Police, Gingee police station, requesting that action be taken to remove the holy cross on the flagstaff erected by miscreants.

In his complaint letter, district president SV Subramani said, “On Thursday (16 March 2023), I was coming back after worshiping Sri Ranganatha at the Sri Ranganatha Temple located on the Singhavaram hill. On my way back to Gingee, I stopped by the Garudazhvar flagstaff, which is located in the first ward of Mettukaalani in Gingee. I was shocked to see a holy cross erected on top of the flagstaff when I turned to worship it. I was devastated. I humbly request the police to find the antisocial elements who placed the cross on the flagstaff and detain them under the National Security Act. We request you to remove the holy cross placed on the flagstaff and prevent such incidents from happening again.”

SV Subramani has also attached the image of the Karudaazhwar flagstaff with the holy cross, along with the complaint.

Dwajasthambam or Flagstaff is an important feature of Hindu temples in South India. Locally known as ‘Kodimaram’ the flagstaff combined of Balipitha (altar for offerings) and the Vahana (vehicle) of the deity to which the temple is dedicated.
