A violent incident involving a group of ganja-intoxicated youths has triggered fear and outrage in Veeraganallur village near Tiruttani, after a Class 10 schoolgirl was chased and villagers were attacked with weapons.

According to reports, the incident occurred when a Class 10 student, who had gone to write her public examination at a school in KG Kandigai, was returning home on a motorcycle with her elder brother, a Class 11 student. As they passed through a dense casuarina grove near Veeraganallur, they were spotted by a group of nine youths from VCR Kandigai, who were said to be under the influence of ganja.

The youths, riding three motorcycles, reportedly began chasing the schoolgirl. Alarmed by the situation, the girl’s brother sped away and managed to bring her safely home. However, the group pursued them all the way to their residence.

The girl, in a state of distress, informed her parents and local residents about the incident. When villagers confronted the youths and questioned their actions, the situation escalated. The accused attempted to attack the villagers with knives they had concealed. Though some residents initially managed to restrain them, the youths reportedly contacted others from their village, leading to the arrival of around 10 more individuals.

The situation quickly turned violent, with the group attacking residents. A woman was injured in a knife attack, while two others were assaulted. The accused were also reported to have roamed through the locality armed with weapons, creating panic among residents.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos, stating that the youths chased people, shouted aggressively, and vandalized property. One resident, a pregnant woman, reported fleeing in fear as the attackers smashed household items, including ceiling fans, doors, and windows. Residents also stated that such intoxicated groups frequently create disturbances in the area, targeting passersby, including schoolchildren, and causing widespread insecurity.

The attackers damaged at least seven houses, breaking windows, doors, and other property. They also vandalized a load auto parked in the area, shattering its glass.

Villagers claimed that despite calling the emergency helpline (100), they did not receive timely assistance. As the situation worsened, some residents reportedly travelled nearly 10 kilometers in a load auto to lodge a complaint directly at the Tiruttani police station.

Allegations of police negligence have also surfaced. Residents claimed that police personnel responded insensitively, reportedly questioning why the villagers did not retaliate if the attackers were armed with knives. This response has drawn anger from locals, who questioned how unarmed civilians could be expected to confront armed assailants.

By the time police reached the village, the accused had fled the scene. Officers later inspected the area and began an investigation.

In protest against the incident and the alleged delay in police response, villagers staged a road blockade on the Tiruttani–Sholinghur highway, demanding immediate action and the arrest of all those involved.

Residents expressed deep concern over recurring incidents of violence, stating that they no longer feel safe stepping out of their homes. They highlighted the lack of security for school-going children, especially girls, and raised questions about long-term safety measures.

Villagers also stated that the accused had been threatening residents, including women, with violence, and warned that such incidents could escalate further if not addressed.

Following the protest, Tiruttani police registered a case and launched a search operation. Four individuals, identified as Kishore, Arun Kumar, Viji, and a 16-year-old boy from PCR Kandigai, have been arrested and are currently under interrogation.

Police stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the attack.

The woman injured during the incident is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

A disturbing investigation by News Tamil 24×7 has unveiled a web of illegal activities, including drug abuse and alleged sexual misconduct, operating with impunity from within the abandoned shops of the old bus station complex in the heart of Salem city. Despite multiple complaints and the presence of minors involved in these acts, the local police have reportedly failed to take any substantial action, sparking outrage among social activists and the community.

The old bus station, located centrally in Salem, was renovated years ago into a two-story complex under Smart City Scheme, housing over a hundred shops intended for commercial use. However, these shops have remained locked and unused, transforming the area into a dangerous hub for anti-social elements.

This bus stand serves as a critical transit point for thousands of commuters, with an estimated five thousand school and college students passing through daily. It is here, in the shadows of the vacant establishments, that illicit activities have taken root.

During an undercover investigation, the news team witnessed firsthand the brazen nature of these crimes. Individuals were seen entering the vacant shops in succession to smoke and sell cannabis. More alarmingly, evidence points to the operation of illicit sexual activities within these premises.

Predatory Environment and Shocking Evidence

Sources within the business community and social activists have alleged that these spaces are being used for private meetings, raising serious concerns for the safety of minors. The investigation found beds arranged inside some of the rooms and evidence of sex work taking place. The most alarming aspect, according to the report, is the potential threat to school and college girls, with concerns that students, some in uniform, are being lured into these deserted spaces. The discovery of used women’s underwear and condoms scattered inside has confirmed the nature of the activities occurring there.

The investigation further revealed that the illegal acts are not confined to adults, with minors deeply entangled in this ecosystem of crime.

Minors Caught and Released; Police Fail to Act

The news team witnessed three minors selling cannabis on the premises. They apprehended the individuals and handed them over to the Salem Town Police. However, the police reportedly released them without conducting any proper investigation or filing a report. This failure to act against juvenile offenders is seen as a critical lapse that will only embolden the criminals operating in the area. Reports also indicate that drug abuse is rampant, with individuals openly taking turns to inject drugs inside the shops.

Business organization executives and the municipal administration have reportedly submitted multiple complaint petitions to the Salem Town Police Station over an extended period, but no investigation has been initiated. The report states that despite being informed, the police have turned a blind eye, and this inaction is the primary reason these illegal activities are flourishing.

Social activists are now demanding urgent and decisive intervention from both the police and the municipal authorities. They have insisted that the entire area be sealed off immediately without any further delay, expressing shock and concern over the sight of school children engaging in smoking cannabis, consuming alcohol, and injecting drugs.

Furthermore, activists are calling on the municipal administration to break the deadlock by finally auctioning the shops through proper legal channels. Bringing the spaces into public use is seen as the only permanent solution to drive out the anti-social elements who have claimed the area as their own. If these shops are leased out and opened for legitimate business, the activists believe these illegal activities will naturally cease.

As of this report, there has been no official response from the Salem Town Police or the municipal administration regarding the serious allegations and the demand for a thorough investigation.

The BJP on Saturday organised a street-corner campaign titled “Tomorrow is ours… Tamil Nadu is ours!” in Chintadripet, which falls under the Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni Assembly constituency.

Addressing the gathering, BJP leader K Annamalai alleged a sharp rise in ganja circulation across the state and claimed the problem had reached residential areas and educational institutions.

He said, “Today wherever you see in Tamil Nadu, we have ganja circulation has spread to every nook and corner of the state. I am not saying ganja was not there all these years, but today it has come to the streets. Today if you go to a government school, you will find that in a student’s bag. Due to this ganja proliferation, major crimes are increasing in Tamil Nadu today.”

Annamalai went on to name several localities in and around Chepauk where he alleged the narcotics trade was prevalent. He said, “Today, if you ask where the ganja trade is most prevalent in Chepauk’s streets, even the local people here will tell you – it’s in Neelam Paasha Dargahpuram, Lady Wellingdon Women’s School area, near Nadukuppam, Krishnaampettai cemetery area, Shivaraja Puram, Mattankuppam, Chellamma Thottam, Mannjakori, Border Thottam, Pudupettai areas. To that extent, if you ask whether there is a part in Tamil Nadu that has become the capital of cannabis, then today the Chepauk area has become the capital of ganja circulation and addiction.”

Referring to actor Revathi’s recent remarks about safety concerns in parts of Chennai, Annamalai alleged harassment by the DMK’s IT wing. He said, “Actress Revathi says that she is afraid to go to some places in Chennai. On that, DMK’s IT wing is sexually harassing her.”

He further claimed that crimes against women and children had been rising in the state. Annamalai said, “From 2021 to 2025, crimes against women and children are increasing by 8 percentage points every year. Every capital in India is progressing. But this government is preventing Chennai’s development by claiming they are creating problems with the central government.”

DMK Minister TM Anbarasan on Thursday, 19 February 2026, alleged that the rise in ganja movement in the State was due to the failure of the previous AIADMK government to take timely action.

He made the remarks while addressing a DMK public meeting titled “Tamil Nadu Will Not Bow Down” held in Nanganallur, Chennai. The meeting was attended by MP Kanimozhi Somu and other party leaders.

Speaking at the event, Anbarasan claimed that some individuals arriving from northern states were involved in bringing ganja into Tamil Nadu, while asserting that the police were taking strong measures to curb the menace.

“Today, ganja is banned in our state. In many other states, ganja is not banned anywhere. Do you know how many people arrive in Chennai every day? From the northern states, at least 10,000 people arrive daily. Each one who arrives brings 1-2 kilos each. The moment they arrive; we alert the police and take whatever strict action is necessary. If action had been taken in the last 10 years, this problem would not have arisen,” he said.

In the same event, DMK MP Kanimozhi Somu also derogated North Indians. She said, “Today, if you look at our children, all of them have crossed the seas and gone beyond India and are in very prestigious positions. The main reason is only because we studied Tamil and English. Those who studied Hindi, if one has to say, ‘work itself is god’; I am not belittling anyone’s profession. But here, as was said earlier, about ten thousand people are coming every day from North India. What are they bringing and doing here? Either they are bringing ganja, or they are running pani puri shops and doing that kind of work. But our educated children cross the seas and become scientists, doctors, engineers, and even work in places like Google. That is how much we have progressed.”

With the elections just a couple of months away in Tamil Nadu, a DMK public meeting titled “Tamil Nadu Will Not Bow Down” was held in Nanganallur, Chennai, and was attended by Minister TM Anbarasan, MP Kanimozhi Somu and other party leaders.

Speaking at the event, DMK MP Kanimozhi Somu said, “Today, if you look at our children, all of them have crossed the seas and gone beyond India and are in very prestigious positions. That is how much we have progressed.”

BJP leader Annamalai shared the video and condemned it saying, “Despite innumerable attacks on migrant workers across Tamil Nadu, DMK’s ministers and MPs appear to have learnt absolutely nothing, except how to normalise their hate against migrant workers.

DMK MP Smt Kanimozhi Somu claims that 10,000 migrant workers educated in Hindi arrive in Tamil Nadu every day to sell “Ganja” and Pani Puri. Speaking before her on the same stage, DMK Minister Thiru T. M. Anbarasan echoed the very same narrative. This is not a slip of the tongue or an isolated remark; it is a pattern.

Such targeted, demeaning rhetoric against migrant workers has become routine under this corrupt DMK regime. By repeatedly stereotyping an entire section of people as criminals and petty offenders, DMK is actively legitimising social hostility and violence on the ground.”

A video allegedly showing minors assaulting other minors (younger than them) while under the influence of narcotic substances in Ondipulinayakkanur village of Virudhunagar district has surfaced on social media, triggering concern and political reactions.

BJP leader SG Suryah shared the video on his social media handles and condemned the incident. In his post, he expressed shock over the visuals, stating that the footage of school-age children engaging in brutal violence while reportedly intoxicated was disturbing and raised serious questions about the spread of drug abuse among minors.

He alleged that narcotic substances, including ganja, were easily accessible across Tamil Nadu and described the situation as a failure of governance. Referring to a recent controversy involving the growth of a ganja plant within the premises of Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai, he argued that such incidents reflected administrative lapses in curbing drug circulation.

Suryah further questioned the functioning of the state police and accused the ruling government of failing to safeguard students and youth from substance abuse. He called upon Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to take responsibility for the situation and to respond on measures being taken to control narcotics and protect the future of young people in the state.

A video showing the assault of a pregnant woman by alleged drug addicts in Tiruchirappalli has triggered shock and concern among residents, with the incident drawing attention to law-and-order and narcotics issues in the locality.

The incident occurred near Edamalaipatti Pudur police station limits, in Kollankulam, where more than 50 families reside. CCTV footage that has since surfaced shows a local resident, identified as Dharmaraj, and his pregnant wife Arulmozhi being pushed to the ground and attacked by a group of intoxicated men. The visuals have circulated widely, intensifying public anger.

According to residents, a youth from the area has for some time been returning to the neighbourhood late at night under the influence of alcohol, ganja and injectable drugs, allegedly engaging in violent and anti-social behaviour. Locals claim that those who question him or attempt to intervene are assaulted. There are also allegations of vehicles being vandalised, electricity connections being deliberately cut, and houses being targeted with intimidation tactics.

Complaints were reportedly submitted earlier to the Edamalaipatti Pudur police station regarding repeated disturbances and suspected drug activity. Residents allege that no strong preventive action followed, allowing tensions to escalate in the neighbourhood.

The attack on the pregnant woman has heightened fear in the area. Residents say women are afraid to walk alone at night, and families with children feel increasingly unsafe. Some have even begun discussing whether they should vacate the locality if the situation does not improve.

The incident has also revived broader concerns about the availability of narcotics, particularly ganja and injectable drugs, in urban pockets of Tiruchirappalli. Questions are being raised locally about supply networks and enforcement gaps.

Residents, meanwhile, have appealed for immediate police intervention, tighter surveillance, and sustained patrols in the area to ensure safety, especially for women and vulnerable families.

A resident expressed her anger and frustration saying, “This kind of atrocity and injustice is happening regularly in this street. After consuming ganja and alcohol, they create havoc. We are scared. We have children at home. We are afraid to even step out. We don’t know whether to vacate this place or continue living here. You must give us protection. They drink alcohol, consume ganja, inject drugs… then they come and smash vehicles and destroy property. If we question them, ten of them gather together and surround us.”

Police have yet to release a detailed public statement on arrests or the status of the investigation as of now.

In a major anti-narcotics operation, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Chennai Airport Customs seized 23 kilograms of high-grade hydroponic ganja valued at approximately ₹23 crore in the illicit market and arrested six youths from Kerala for allegedly smuggling the contraband from Thailand through two separate passenger flights.

Hydroponic ganja is a high-potency cannabis variant grown in a soil-free system using nutrient-rich water solutions.

Acting on specific intelligence, AIU officers mounted surveillance on passengers arriving from Bangkok earlier this week.

On Thursday, 5 February 2026, officers intercepted four Kerala-based youths who had travelled to Thailand as tourists and were returning to India. During baggage checks, officials recovered 15 kg of hydroponic ganja concealed inside packaged food items and chocolate packets. The seized contraband was valued at ₹15 crore in the illicit market. All four were arrested.

In a follow-up operation in the early hours of Friday, 6 February 2026, officers intercepted two more Kerala-based youths arriving from Bangkok on another passenger flight. Searches of their luggage led to the recovery of 8 kg of hydroponic ganja hidden inside packaged food packets. This seizure was valued at ₹8 crore. Both accused were taken into custody.

The total haul across the two operations stood at 23 kg, with an estimated combined illicit market value of ₹23 crore.

Sources said preliminary investigations revealed that all six accused are graduates, including some with engineering backgrounds, and were allegedly acting as couriers for an international drug syndicate.

It is claimed that economic distress or lack of lucrative employment opportunities may have motivated the accused were mentioned in source inputs but have not been officially confirmed by customs authorities.

Hydroponic ganja is cultivated without soil using nutrient-rich water solutions, a method known to produce high-potency marijuana with elevated THC levels. Such variants command significantly higher prices in illicit markets compared to conventional cannabis.

While Indian law does not differentiate between cannabis types, its higher potency increases its value for traffickers.

Officials indicated that trafficking through Southeast Asian routes, particularly Bangkok, has figured in multiple recent cases. Thailand’s legal cannabis market has been cited in enforcement inputs as a factor traffickers exploit to move drugs into India through passenger routes.

Recent enforcement actions include seizures at other Indian airports, including a case at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport where over 27 kg of similar contraband was recovered in a separate intelligence-led operation.

All six accused have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Authorities said further investigation is under way to identify the wider network involved. Agencies are examining travel histories, financial transactions, mobile phone data, and communication records to trace links to larger domestic and international drug syndicates.

Three police constables in the Nilgiris district were placed under suspension on Tuesday after a departmental probe in a drug trafficking case revealed that they had procured and consumed ganja while on duty.

The suspended personnel are Abisekaran of Erumadu Police Station, Mayakannan of Kotagiri Police Station, and Santhakumar of Masinagudi Police Station. The suspension orders were issued by Nilgiris Superintendent of Police N. S. Nisha after an internal inquiry confirmed their involvement.

The action follows a series of arrests made after a routine vehicle check conducted by Ooty Town Central Police on January 21. During the check, police intercepted Cruz (26), a resident of Ooty, and found ganja in his possession. Further questioning revealed the involvement of Nazeer Ahmed (26), a constable attached to the Ooty Central Police Station, in the sale of the narcotic substance.

Based on Nazeer Ahmed’s confession, police traced the supply chain to Mohanasundaram (34), a resident of Attapadi in Kerala. A subsequent operation led to the seizure of 17.5 kg of ganja from Mohanasundaram’s possession. Cruz, Nazeer Ahmed, and Mohanasundaram were arrested and later remanded in judicial custody.

The case had further ramifications within the police department. Ooty Town Traffic Sub-Inspector Arun and Jayakumar, a special wing constable from Ooty Central Police Station, were transferred to Gudalur and Devala police stations respectively for failing to alert senior officials about the ganja network operating in the area.

During the continued inquiry, investigators found that Abisekaran, Mayakannan, and Santhakumar had purchased ganja from Nazeer Ahmed and consumed it during duty hours. Following this revelation, all three were placed under suspension.

Police officials said further investigation is under way to determine whether any other police personnel were involved in procuring narcotics from the accused constable or linked to the trafficking network.

Amid growing concerns over the spread of ganja and narcotic tablets in schools and colleges across Tamil Nadu, a Class 11 student was found carrying ganja inside a government higher secondary school in Vyasarpadi, Chennai, triggering shock and concern among teachers and parents.

The incident came to light on Tuesday after complaints were received alleging drug use by students at the school. Acting on the information, teachers conducted a routine inspection of students and their belongings. During the check, a Class 11 student was found to have a packet containing approximately five grams of ganja concealed in his trouser pocket.

Alarmed by the discovery, the school’s headmistress, Hemalatha, immediately lodged a complaint with the MKB Nagar Police Station. Based on the complaint, police officials arrived at the school, seized the ganja packet, and took the student into custody for questioning.

During the inquiry, the student told the police that he had found the ganja packet lying on the road while on his way to school and had picked it up without knowing what it was. However, police investigations revealed that the student had a prior habit of consuming ganja, casting doubt on his explanation.

The student, a 16-year-old resident of Vyasarpadi, was studying in Plus One at the government school. Teachers said the inspection was initially conducted to check whether students were carrying mobile phones, during which the ganja packet hidden at the student’s waist was detected.

After completing preliminary questioning, police later sent the student back home. Meanwhile, officers have secured CCTV footage from the area where the student claimed to have found the ganja packet and are analysing the recordings to verify his statement and trace the source of the contraband.
