Amid grand celebrations for Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s 47th birthday, Tamil Nadu’s School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi declared that Udhayanidhi is destined to become the Chief Minister of the state in the future. Speaking at a DMK youth wing event to release the birthday song Thalaivaney, Ilam Thalaivane on Tuesday, Anbil Mahesh enthused,Indraya deputy chief minister, oru naal definitely chief minister(Today’s deputy chief minister, one day definitely chief minister).

The event, marked by enthusiastic applause from DMK cadres, celebrated Udhayanidhi’s leadership and his role as a youth icon. The song, composed by DMK youth wing deputy secretary Thoothukudi S Joel, extolled Udhayanidhi’s qualities as awell-manneredand committed leader who embodies the DMK’s ideology. Anbil Mahesh also alluded to Udhayanidhi’s firm stance during the Sanatana Dharma controversy, praising his refusal to apologize and his pride in beingKalaignar’s grandson.”

However, as the party leaders revel in political festivities, Tamil Nadu’s government schools, under Education Minister Anbil Mahesh, are grappling with a severe crisis. Thousands of primary and middle schools in the state lack headmasters, leaving students without proper academic guidance or leadership. The situation is compounded by inadequate teaching staff, crumbling infrastructure, and insufficient resources, putting the future of thousands of children at risk.

Currently, around 900 headmaster posts in government high schools across Tamil Nadu are vacant due to pending court cases. Additionally, reports indicate that 4,500 government schools, including 2,994 primary and middle schools, lack headmasters. This includes 950 vacant high school headmaster posts, along with vacancies in chief education officers (CEOs) and district education officers (DEOs). These vacancies have been an ongoing issue, with some positions remaining unfilled for over six months.

It feels as if Anbil Mahesh is prioritizing his role as a full-timeUdhayanidhi fan club presidentover his responsibilities as School Education Minister. While schools face acute shortages and infrastructure deficits, the minister’s focus on political celebrations has drawn sharp criticism.

Observers argue that the state’s education sector is in desperate need of attention. Without urgent reforms to address staff shortages and improve school infrastructure, the quality of education for countless students will continue to deteriorate. Additionally, the school infrastructure is facing glaring neglect by the government – with many schools complaining of broken ceilings – newly opened government schools at that, unclean classrooms and toilets, teachers asking students to massage legs, etc. Such is the troubling disconnect between the DMK government’s priorities and the pressing needs of its citizens.

Andhra Pradesh Education, Information Technology (IT) and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh on Thursday said he would take the state to the number one position in the country in the education sector. Inaugurating the international Higher Education Fair (IHEF) at the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) campus being organised by VIT and the State Government, Minister Lokesh felt that the youth should focus on becoming job creators rather than looking for employment opportunities.

The Education Minister flagged off a driverless van, a drone and a robot on this occasion. He gave a call to the youth to establish start-up companies taking advantage of the latest technology as the AP Innovation Society is ready to extend all possible cooperation and assistance. A seed fund with Rs 250 crore has been created for this purpose, he added. The youth should realise their dreams by moving forward with the perspective of broad thinking, the Minister told the youth and made it clear that the State Government’s sole aim was creating an education system with moral values. Education institutes like VIT should focus on outcomes instead of outputs, he maintained.

The IT Minister said that the youth should move forward with the single goal of achieving success and should concentrate on new innovations keeping themselves abreast of periodical developments across the globe. “I too worked with the World Bank in 2005 after doing my MBA from Stanford University. I too faced several ups and downs like anyone else,” the minister recalled. The Minister said that he undertook various developmental activities in the State as a Cabinet Minister in 2017 and contested from Mangalagiri Assembly segment in 2019 but was defeated with a meagre margin of 5,300 votes. “No doubt I was upset for a couple of days but later I stood solidly by the people of Mangalagiri for the full five years following which the people have given a mandate in my favour in the last elections with the highest majority in the State,” he said.

Observing that he is committed to achieving his goals, the minister said that youth should take him as an example. The State has umpteen job opportunities presently, the Minister said that the developmental works in the capital city of Amaravati are moving at a fast pace. It is heartening to see representatives from various noted universities across the globe attending Thursday’s meeting held in Amaravati, Lokesh remarked and said that he eagerly waits for the success of the students He thanked all the universities, other educational institutes, teachers, students and their parents for actively participating in this event.

In an important announcement for both students and parents, Union Education Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on Tuesday (22 December) said that the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) will not conduct the class 10 and 12 examinations in February.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Education,  final dates for the Board exams will soon be announced after discussion with the stakeholders, Pokhriyal said.

Pokhriyal was in a virtual interaction with teachers from across the country and talked about how the CBSE is making necessary preparations for conducting the 2021 examinations.

The minister also talked about the schedule and syllabus of the entrance examinations and said that the syllabus of JEE (Main) 2021 examination will remain the same as it was last year.

However, in order to overcome the impact of reduction of syllabus undertaken by some Boards, the question papers for JEE (Main) 2021 will have 90 questions (30 questions each in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics), out of which the candidate will have to answer 75 questions (25 questions each in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics), he added.
