Mocking and deriding our heads of state for being Hindu is a habit, especially for the Dravidianists in Tamil Nadu. Leading the pack would be Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi member’s wife and DMK supporter Dr Sharmila.

In a post on her X handle, Sharmila shared a picture of President Draupadi Murmu, who is seen meditating, wearing religious marks on her forehead, and adorning a rudraksha mala. The caption mocks President Murmu, and Sharmila wrote, “I thought it was the soothsayer lady (akin to God woman) we see in TV serials, but on second glance, I found it was our President.”

She has indulged in mocking Hindus and Hindu customs for a very long time despite being a Hindu and Tamil Brahmin herself. She is the wife of VCK MLA SS Balaji, who had peddled fake news on her X handle addressing Prime Minister Modi in singular.

Following the Tirupati laddoo controversy, Sharmila also mocked Hindus making such a post as below.

 

In a TV debate held in 2023, she made misleading claims while advocating for the DMK alliance. She incorrectly asserted that late DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi established India’s first women’s police station in 1973 when it was actually initiated by AIADMK leader J. Jayalalithaa in 1992. She also misattributed the creation of a female commando force to the DMK, which was established by Jayalalithaa in 2003. Additionally, Dr. Sharmila falsely claimed that the DMK ensured 50% representation of women in local body elections, a measure actually introduced by Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK in 2016.

Netizens Call For Legal Action

Netizens outraged by the comments called for legal action against Sharmila for her distasteful comments about the country’s first citizen.

VCK cadre Dr. Sharmila (wife of VCK MLA S.S. Balaji) in a recent debate show made misleading claims while advocating for the DMK alliance. Dr. Sharmila’s statements during the debate not only misrepresented historical facts but also drew sharp criticism for perpetuating a false narrative. Interestingly the host of the debate Puthiya Thalaimurai, introduced Sharmila as a “political commentator” and instead of identifying her as a VCK woman.

One of the glaring inaccuracies in Dr. Sharmila’s assertions was her claim that late DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi was responsible for establishing India’s first women police station in 1973.

However, the historical record tells a different story. It was under the leadership of AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa, that the first women police station was set up in Tamil Nadu, not in 1973, but during her tenure in 1992. This landmark move aimed to address gender bias in investigations and provide a swift and empathetic response to crimes against women.

Furthermore, Dr. Sharmila incorrectly attributed the establishment of a special commando force consisting entirely of female police officers to the DMK’s tenure. The reality is that this historic initiative was also initiated by Jayalalithaa during her time in power. In 2003, India’s first company of female police commandos was formed in Tamil Nadu. These dedicated officers underwent rigorous training, which included handling weapons, bomb detection and disposal, driving, horse riding, and various adventure sports.

Another critical point of contention in the debate was Dr. Sharmila’s assertion that the DMK alliance, under Karunanidhi, ensured 50% representation of women in local body elections in Tamil Nadu. However, the factual record contradicts this claim. It was Jayalalitha’s AIADMK that introduced bills to increase the representation of women in local body elections from 33% to 50%. The Tamil Nadu Municipal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and the Tamil Nadu Panchayats (Amendment) Bill, 2016, were introduced and adopted with unanimous support in the legislature. These bills marked a significant step towards greater gender representation in local government.

Many on social media lashed out the DMK ally for pasting sticker over the AIADMK’s achievements.

BJP Tamil Nadu State Secretary Dr. SG Suryah called the VCK lady a “rogue woman” and a “perennial bluffer of the first order”
