In a familiar pattern, the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu has once again attempted to re-brand a central government driven initiative as its own, this time in the shipbuilding sector. The latest instance involves the announcement of two major investments by central Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) to set up greenfield shipyards in Tamil Nadu with a combined investment of ₹30,000 crore. However, the DMK, backed by sections of the Dravidianist media, has been quick to position the development as a result of its own policies and leadership.

On 20 September 2025, Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister TRB Rajaa announced the MoUs via his X account, describing it as “massive news” for the state’s shipbuilding industry. He stated that the agreements as a key milestone under the upcoming Tamil Nadu Maritime Transport Manufacturing Policy 2025, emphasizing that they would generate over 55,000 jobs and mark the state’s emergence as a “global hub for shipbuilding and maritime innovation.”

In his statement, Rajaa credited Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and said the move aligned with the DMK’s development vision. Following this, Stalin himself posted on social media, invoking Tamil maritime history and asserting that the “Dravidian Model” was steering southern Tamil Nadu onto the global shipbuilding map.

Predictably, DMK-simping media outlets like Puthiya Thalaimurai amplified this narrative, presenting the announcement as a direct achievement of the state government. One headline read, “Contract worth ₹15,000 crore: Minister Raja.”

The Reality: A Modi Govt-Led Initiative Under National Maritime Vision

Contrary to the narrative being peddled by the DMK and its ecosystem, these projects are part of the Government of India’s broader maritime strategy, specifically the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. The MoUs were signed between the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) and the Tamil Nadu government through its investment promotion agency, Guidance Tamil Nadu, with the centre’s active involvement.

Cochin Shipyard Limited, which built the Indian Navy’s first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, will invest ₹15,000 crore in a commercial shipyard, creating 10,000 jobs initially. MDL, known for building Scorpene-class submarines and frontline destroyers like the Visakhapatnam-class, will invest an equivalent amount to establish a shipyard employing over 45,000 people.

Both entities are central PSUs under the Ministries of Defence and Shipping, respectively. Their strategic decision to establish shipbuilding infrastructure on India’s east coast specifically in Thoothukudi district is driven by national maritime priorities, including security and trade.

Union Government’s Role Highlighted at Signing Ceremony

The MoUs were formally exchanged on 19 September 2025 at an event organized by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. The ceremony was attended by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, further confirming the central government’s role in initiating and facilitating these massive investments.

Yet, in Tamil Nadu, the DMK has attempted to shift the spotlight toward its own governance, despite the projects being aligned with central government frameworks. Critics have pointed out that the DMK is merely piggybacking on the Centre’s plans while attempting to appropriate credit for political mileage ahead of elections.

Social Media Pushback: DMK’s Credit Grab Draws Ridicule

The DMK’s attempt to take ownership of the shipbuilding projects has triggered significant backlash on social media. Users have mocked the party’s habitual sticker politics,” accusing it of slapping its label on any initiative with potential visibility or public appeal, regardless of who conceived or executed it.

This episode follows a familiar pattern where central government projects in Tamil Nadu be it in infrastructure, defence, or manufacturing are rebranded locally as “Dravidian model achievements” for narrative-building purposes. However, in the digital age, such attempts are increasingly met with scrutiny and resistance from the public.

As the 2026 state elections approach, the line between genuine state-led development and opportunistic political branding is becoming increasingly blurred at least in the way it’s being projected by the ruling establishment in Tamil Nadu.

The DMK, often criticized for repackaging schemes initiated by rival parties, is once again facing backlash for rebranding a previous AIADMK scheme. The DMK’s newly launched initiative, Ungaludan Stalin(Stalin With You), closely mirrors the AIADMK’s flagship ‘Assured Maximum Service to Marginal People in All Villages’ (AMMA) scheme, with only minor modifications.

Unveiled by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on 15 July 2025, the ‘Ungaludan Stalin’ initiative promises to bring government services directly to the public through special camps set up in both urban and rural areas. According to official announcements, these camps will operate until November 2025, offering a wide range of services 43 from 13 departments in urban areas and 46 from 15 departments in rural areas. The idea is to streamline access to services such as obtaining caste and income certificates, correcting Aadhaar and ration card details, accessing health insurance cards, pension applications, patta changes, and eligibility verification under the Women’s Rights Scheme. The goal, the government claims, is to make service delivery faster, simpler, and more transparent, eliminating the need for people to visit government offices repeatedly.

However, this scheme has striking resemblance to the AIADMK’s AMMA scheme, which was launched on 24 February 2013 the birthday of the then Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. Under that program, the Revenue Department organized camps where officials provided essential services on-site, particularly for the elderly and economically disadvantaged. The AMMA camps addressed issues such as old-age pension distribution, patta transfers, community certificates, birth and death certificates, and other key government services—all delivered at the grassroots level.

An official release at the time highlighted the challenges faced by citizens who had to make multiple visits to tahsildar offices without often meeting the concerned officials. The AMMA scheme was seen as a solution to reduce bureaucratic delays and make governance more accessible, particularly in rural areas.

Now, with the launch of ‘Ungaludan Stalin’, many on social media have mocked the DMK for yet another example of rebranding rather than initiative, accusing the party of simply slapping a new label on an old scheme without any efforts. Memes and posts ridiculing the initiative have been circulating widely, reigniting the ongoing political rivalry between the two Dravidian parties over credit for pro-people governance.

Netizens criticised this move and called out the “sticker” job of the ruling party. Here are some comments:

The Coimbatore Women’s Court has sentenced all nine accused in the infamous Pollachi sexual assault case to life imprisonment—marking a significant moment in a case that had outraged the nation. However, the verdict quickly reignited a political war of words between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS).

Following the court’s decision, Chief Minister Stalin took to X (formerly Twitter), claiming the verdict as a win for justice and took a swipe at the AIADMK. He wrote, “Justice has been served for the crimes committed by the immoral AIADMK functionary and other culprits. Those ‘sirs’ who tried to shield that political tent of criminals should hang their heads in shame—if they have any.”

EPS Response

In response, Edappadi Palaniswami hit back sharply, accusing Stalin of attempting to claim credit for a process initiated under the previous AIADMK government. In his own post on X, EPS reminded the public that it was his administration that acted decisively.

“It was my government that arrested those criminals. Unlike you, I did not try to protect anyone because of political loyalty to the DMK. I ordered a CBI probe to ensure impartial investigation. Now that justice has been served. Don’t stick your label on it as you always do @Stalin! Who should put down their heads in shame?

EPS continued his attack by listing the DMK’s failures and hypocrisy:

  • You, who are unable to conduct an investigation into your minister and the Chennai deputy mayor, who ate biryani while sitting at the house of Gnanasekaran, the accused in the Anna University sexual harassment case, should put down your heads in shame!
  • You, who have not answered the question of #Who_is_that_SIR to this day and are trying to protect that SIR, should put down your heads in shame!
  • You, who went all the way to the Supreme Court against the CBI investigation into the sexual assault case of the 10-year-old girl in Anna Nagar, wasted public tax money on appointing senior lawyers and argued against the justice that should be given to the 10-year-old girl and her parents, should put down your heads in shame!
  • When you and your son deceived students by talking about the NEET secret, it became clear that you have no shame or dignity.

However, if you have even a shred of conscience, you should at least put down your head in shame at the plight of women in your government, where they cannot even come out, and at the POCSO cases that are being filed every day!”

The Pollachi case, which came to light in 2019, involved a gang accused of sexually assaulting and blackmailing multiple women over several years. The AIADMK government initially faced criticism over delays and mishandling but later transferred the case to the CBI. The DMK, then in opposition, had used the incident to attack the AIADMK for allegedly shielding the accused.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin hailed the Centre’s decision to conduct a caste census alongside the regular census as a significant victory for the DMK and the INDIA bloc in their ongoing struggle for social justice. He framed the announcement as a direct outcome of their persistent efforts. However, this claim appears to be contradicted by an official response in the Rajya Sabha, where the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment stated that the Tamil Nadu government had not made any formal request or representation to the Centre regarding the conduct of a caste survey.

On 30 April 2025, CM Stalin, through his official account on X, expressed skepticism about the Union Government’s timing, suggesting it was politically motivated. “After the failure of all its attempts to deny and delay the much-needed caste enumeration, the Union BJP Government has finally announced that it will be conducted along with the forthcoming Census. But key questions remain unanswered —when will the Census begin? When will it conclude? The timing is no coincidence. With #SocialJustice dominating the #BiharElections narrative, this sudden move reeks of political expediency.” he posted.

Stalin criticized the Prime Minister’s previous stance, recalling how he had once condemned opposition parties for “dividing people on caste” but had now conceded to the very demand he had opposed. “The same Prime Minister who once accused opposition parties of dividing people on caste has now yielded to the very demand, he maligned repeatedly. Caste Census is essential—not optional—for objective policymaking, targeted welfare, and the pursuit of real social justice. You cannot remedy injustice without first recognising its scale. For the Tamil Nadu Government and DMK, this is a hard-earned victory. We were the first to adopt a resolution in the Legislative Assembly demanding #CasteCensus. We championed this cause in every forum. We reiterated this demand in every meeting with the Prime Minister and through multiple letters, consistently urging the Union Government to take responsibility. While others called for state-level caste surveys, we stood firm: Census is a Union subject. Only the Union Government can and should deliver a legally binding caste enumeration under the Census Act. Our stand is now vindicated. Another triumph for DMK and #INDIA Bloc in our arduous social justice journey, driven by the ideals of the #DravidianModel,” he wrote.

However, this narrative is challenged by an official reply in Parliament. On 19 March 2025, in response to an unstarred question (No. 2200) raised by PMK leader Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment clarified that it had not received any communication from the Tamil Nadu government regarding the conduct of a caste survey under the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008.

Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri B.L. Verma, responded:
(a) & (b) The Department has not received any information from the Tamil Nadu government about plans to conduct a caste survey.
(c) & (d) Therefore, the question of representations does not arise.

Earlier, on 26 June 2024, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a resolution urging the Central Government to conduct a caste census alongside the general census. Although Tamil Nadu had the legal authority to carry out a caste survey independently—just as states like Karnataka and Bihar have done—the DMK-led government argued that census activities fall under the Union List, and therefore only the Centre should conduct such an enumeration. Despite having the means, the state chose not to proceed on its own and instead limited its action to passing a resolution.

Now, with the Centre announcing its intention to conduct a caste census, the DMK is portraying the move as a victory, despite having taken no substantial steps beyond symbolic resolutions. This contrast—between public declarations and actual engagement—has reignited debate over Tamil Nadu’s genuine efforts and commitment to pushing for a caste census at the national level.

While the roar of engines filled the air in Srinagar and Chennai this year, the stories behind the Formula 4 races couldn’t be more different. Srinagar’s race event, held on the banks of Dal Lake, showcased a transformed region, highlighting normalcy after the abrogation of Article 370. In contrast, Chennai’s night race was marred by delays, safety concerns, and frustration, raising questions about the DMK government’s execution and priorities.

So far, the DMK has been criticized for claiming central government schemes as their own. Recently, it has come to light that their latest claims are also questionable. For example, the recently concluded “Formula 4” night street race, a pet project of DMK scion Udhayanidhi Stalin, was touted by the Dravidian faction as ‘Asia’s first.’ However, this claim is false, as the Formula 4 format had already been held on 17 March 2024, on the banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar, located along Boulevard Road in the Zabarwan Mountain Range by the BJP.

If you take a little background check, the F4 Indian Championship is a single-seater motorsport series adhering to the FIA’s Formula 4 regulations and organized by Racing Promotions Pvt Ltd. The series began its inaugural season in 2023, making the Dravidian faction’s claim about it being a unique event incorrect.

Real Difference Between The 2 Events – A Closer Look

Srinagar’s Formula 4 race was a significant achievement, showcasing the restored normalcy in Kashmir after Article 370 was abrogated. In the very streets where stone pelting used to be common, officials hosted such a prestigious event highlighting the region’s progress.

Unlike Udhayanidhi Stalin’s approach, the BJP didn’t spend ₹42 crores on extravagant road improvements or an additional ₹40 crores to host the Formula 4 race. This begs the question – if the BJP managed to execute the Srinagar’s race event efficiently without excess spending, why did the Chennai event cost over ₹80 crores? If Chennai still has to resort to elaborate events to attract investors, it indicates a failure in addressing broader issues by the current DMK regime. In contrast, Kashmir needs to display its newfound stability following the abrogation of Article 370, a change primarily credited to Home Minister Amit Shah.

In Srinagar, the race was open to the public from the banks of Dal Lake at no cost, whereas the Chennai event charged ₹1000 to ₹20,000 for tickets. It’s puzzling that some people equate such costly events with social justice. Unlike in Chennai, the UT Administration in J&K didn’t need to plead in court for FIA certification; their primary goal was to demonstrate Kashmir’s return to normalcy. Additionally, the Srinagar’s race event was not a public nuisance there were no road closures or traffic diversions, and public funds were not wasted.

Let’s examine the chaos they created both during and in the lead-up to the event.

Failed To Get Clearance On Time

Racing Promotion Private Limited (RPPL) organized the event, which hit a snag when it failed to secure the necessary clearance from the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) by the noon deadline set by the Madras High Court. As a result, RPPL petitioned the court for a six-hour extension.

RPPL explained to the special bench that unexpected rain on the evening of 30 August had delayed some critical work. They had invested over ₹200 crore into the event, with more than 5,000 tickets sold. They argued that not granting the extension would cause significant prejudice and hardship. A special bench of Justices R. Suresh Kumar and P.B. Balaji granted an extension until 8 p.m. when the FIA clearance was finally received.

Spectators Left High & Dry

The delay was particularly exasperating for fans who had braved the sweltering heat only to be met with uncertainty. Information about the delay was scarce, leaving many spectators wondering when the event would commence.

One attendee, who had paid around ₹20,000 for tickets for himself and his two children, expressed frustration. “We were excited about the night race coming to Chennai, but the organization has been a letdown. My kids followed car racing closely and were looking forward to this,” he said.

This year’s Formula 4 championship in India has been held over five rounds, with the second round ending in Chennai. On 1 September, the turnout was notably lower compared to 31 August, as only those with tickets attended. The previous day had seen a large crowd, many of whom thought entry was free.

K Shiva, who travelled from Kumbakonam to watch the Formula 4 event, expressed frustration, “We were told either entry would be free, or ticket prices would be low. However, there was a lack of clear guidance from the authorities, and we ran from gate to gate without proper information.” As a result, nearly half of the attendees from Saturday left after discovering that admission was not free.

Information for ticket holders was scarce, leaving many spectators confused and frustrated.

Circuit Not Well Done – Safety Issues

The day’s schedule included free practice and qualifying sessions for the Indian Racing League (IRL), Formula 4 Indian Championship (F4IC), and the JK Formula LGB 4 categories. The F4 free practice session, initially set for 1:45 p.m., was delayed after an FIA inspection at 11 a.m. revealed that two corners of the circuit were not up to standard and needed modifications for approval. RPPL then rushed back to court for an extension, granted at 5 p.m. when the FIA approved the circuit for a G3 licence.

The FIA’s statement clarified that while the circuit licence ensured a minimum level of safety, it did not guarantee absolute safety for the event, which remained the responsibility of the circuit owners and event organizers. As a result, the entire tournament schedule was shifted, with 31 August 2024 night’s qualifying sessions moved to 1 September 2024.

The chaos finally subsided around 9 p.m., and spectators could finally at least enjoy the practice sessions. The roar of engines and the sight of cars racing through the illuminated streets restored excitement for the event.

Car Collision

In the main race on 1 September 2024, a collision between two cars during the final lap caused the race to be temporarily halted. Dark Don Racing’s T.S. Diljith, who had maintained the lead throughout the race, was declared the winner after the interruption.

Overall, the DMK’s Formula 4 event was marred by hype and haste, resulting in considerable frustration among fans and enthusiasts. The execution fell short of expectations, revealing the DMK’s inability to manage a sporting event effectively. It appeared that the event was treated more like a DMK affair than a professional racing competition, with the FIA’s approval coming only at the last minute, placing the burden of responsibility on the organizers. The collision between cars during the race was not fully explained or investigated, leading political commentators to criticize the DMK for allegedly downplaying the issue.

Stray Dogs Loitering On Circuit, Bikers Performing Stunts

Organizers seemed unprepared for behaviours, such as stray dogs running on the track and bikers using it for stunts. Such activities further compounded the chaos before the Formula 4 event finally began.

Overall, the DMK’s racing event in Chennai appears more as an attempt to mask the failures of the Dravidian Model in Tamil Nadu rather than to foster enthusiasm and inspiration for racing genuinely. If their intention had been sincere, they would have chosen race tracks on the outskirts rather than the city center.

The Formula 4 race events in Srinagar and Chennai offered a stark contrast in execution and outcomes. The Srinagar’s race was a testament to the region’s progress and the government’s ability to successfully host a major sporting event. In contrast, Chennai’s race was a chaotic affair that exposed the DMK government’s shortcomings in organization and planning. While the race event may have been a temporary distraction from the state’s pressing issues, it ultimately revealed more about the government’s priorities and capabilities than it did about the sport of racing.

Today, Tamil Nadu BJP  President K. Annamalai criticised Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for deliberately overlooking the central government’s contribution to a major infrastructure initiative. This project, located at the Industrial Housing Facility at SIPCOT Industrial Park Vallam Vadagal in Sriperumbudur, will provide safe housing for 18,720 working women.

Foxconn in Tamil Nadu

Chief Minister MK Stalin and Foxconn Hon Hai Chief Young Liu inaugurated a state-of-the-art housing complex in Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu, on 17 August 2024. The ₹700 crore facility aims to offer a secure, clean, and comfortable environment for 18,000 women workers employed by Foxconn, an iPhone manufacturer.

The complex spans ten floors and 13 blocks and has amenities such as kitchens, dining areas, CCTV surveillance, UPS systems, ETPs, and recreational spaces. Foxconn will cover the rent on a per-bed basis. Highlighting Tamil Nadu’s significant presence in Foxconn’s operations in India, Young Liu remarked, “This represents a new beginning, and we are proud to support sustainability.”

This development follows a 2021 protest by Foxconn workers who complained about poor food and unhygienic living conditions, leading to allegations of food poisoning and subsequent scrutiny from Apple.

The CM boasted the project as “pioneering,” emphasising Tamil Nadu’s role as home to 42% of India’s industrial female workforce and entirely a state initiative. He outlined several women’s empowerment initiatives and stated that the state aims to become a leader in South Asia. Stalin also highlighted Tamil Nadu’s ambition to become a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

In his official X account, Chief Minister MK Stalin stated that “Tamil Nadu is the No. 1 state in India, with 42% of the nation’s total working women. For the first time in India, we have constructed and inaugurated a mega infrastructure project offering safe housing for 18,720 working women—the #SIPCOT Industrial Housing Facility in Thiruperumpudur. Thanks to @SIPCOTTN and @HonHai_Foxconn!”

Centre’s Role

The state government’s SIDCO (Small Industries Development Corporation) invested ₹170 crore, borrowed ₹500 crore, and utilised ₹30 crore from the central government’s affordable housing scheme for this project.

Responding to MK Stalin on X, the BJP chief pointed out that the state government failed to acknowledge Centre’s contributions. He noted that the Affordable Rented Housing Complexes (ARHCs) scheme, launched under PMAY-U in July 2020, included the Sriperumbudur and Chennai projects sanctioned to Tamil Nadu in September 2021 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Annamalai highlighted that the ₹707 crore project included a ₹37.44 crore central grant and a ₹498 crore loan from the State Bank of India. He expressed confidence that Chief Minister Stalin was aware of these details.

Annamalai stated, “The Affordable Rented Housing Complexes (ARHCs) scheme under PMAY-U was launched in July 2020, and the housing project in Sriperumbudur and Chennai was among the five ARHC projects Sanctioned to TN by our Hon PM Thiru @narendramodi avl in September 2021. Built at a cost of ₹707 Crore, the 18,720-bed dormitory in Vallam-Vadagal has a component of a Central Govt grant of ₹37.44 Crore & a term loan of ₹498 Crore from the State Bank of India. We are sure that TN CM Thiru @mkstalin is aware.”

Affordable Rental Housing Complexes

The Affordable Rental Housing Complexes (ARHCs) scheme was launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in July 2020 as a sub-scheme of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U).

The scheme aims to provide dignified and affordable rental housing for urban migrants and the poor near their workplaces. By offering better housing options close to their employment sites, it seeks to improve living conditions for these groups.

Implementation Model-1 involves converting existing government-funded vacant houses, built initially under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) and Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY), into ARHCs. This conversion is carried out either through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) or by Public Agencies.

Model 2 focuses on the construction, operation, and maintenance of new ARHCs by public or private entities on their own vacant land. The housing facility in Sriperumbudur is part of the ARHC provided under Model 2 of the scheme, where construction, operation, and maintenance of ARHCs are done by Public or private Entities on their own vacant land.

In Tamil Nadu, several such projects with a total of 57,364 units were sanctioned by the Centre in cities including Chennai, Sriperumbudur, and Hosur alone, Kaushal Kishore, Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs, informed so in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on March 2022.

Once again, the so-called Fact-Checking Unit (FCU) of the DMK government has found itself peddling half-truth in order to peddle propaganda.

The current controversy centers on conflicting assertions concerning the originality of village road schemes implemented by both the central and state governments.

The spotlight is now on the DMK government’s Fact Checking Unit, led by Dravidian propagandist Iyan Karthikeyan, recognized for spreading misinformation favoring the DMK. Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai has exposed them, detailing the schemes and highlighting discrepancies. He has not only caught them red-handed but has also raised questions about the inconsistencies in the scheme, urging the release of a white paper.

The TN Fact Checking Unit through its official X handle buttressing DMK refuted the assertion made by BJP leader Annamalai regarding the Muthalamaichar Grama Sallai Menbaatu Thittam (MGSMT), dismissing it as mere speculation. According to the Fact Checking Unit  Annamalai alleged that the State Government had simply rebranded the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) of the Central Government, presenting it as a new initiative named MGSMT.

Unit explianed the MGSMT scheme aims to establish well-constructed roads for village connectivity and execute road development projects in rural areas. It operates solely on state funds, in contrast to the PMGSY, which links villages along roads housing essential facilities like hospitals, colleges, and institutions. The PMGSY specifically focuses on upgrading hill village roads to tar roads, with funding allocated at a ratio of 60% from the central government and 40% from the state government. Therefore, the Union Government’s PMGSY and the State Government’s MGSMT schemes are distinct initiatives.

Discovering this amusing, Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Annamalai issued a statement through his official X handle expressed, “The fact (?) checking unit of the Tamil Nadu government has given a rare explanation in the name of the difference between the rural roads plan of the Prime Minister and the said rural roads plan of the Tamil Nadu government.”

“The Prime Minister’s Rural Roads Scheme was introduced in the year 2000 by the then Prime Minister of India, Bharat Ratna Vajpayee. Under this scheme, which provides tar road facilities to hamlets and hill villages, in the last nine years, ₹5,837 crore has been spent in Tamil Nadu. However, in the districts of Tiruvannamalai, Vellore and Tirupur, there is still a dire situation in Tamil Nadu where dolly are carried for medical treatment in hilly villages without road facilities. If that is the case, it is clear from this that the DMK, which was in power in the Congress alliance for ten years between 2004-2014 at the center, did nothing for the villages of Tamil Nadu.” He said

The Chief Minister’s Village Roads Project announced by the DMK was announced only in 2023.  Is DMK’s fact-checking unit says that road facilities were not constructed till then in Tamilnadu villages? If road facilities were constructed in the villages before then, with what funds were they carried out? Central government funding or state government funding? Is the Central Government providing funds to Gram Panchayats ? Or the state government?” He questioned

Apart from this, according to the DMK Government’s Order No. 34 issued on 18.03.2023, under the Chief Minister’s Village Roads Scheme, ₹2,300 crore has been allocated for the year 2022-2023. But, real spending is “zero”. If DMK’s fact-finding unit says this too is wrong, then it should publish a white report on the expenditure of ₹2,300 crore last year.” He demanded

Why are we asking for a white report? There is a doubt among the public that you have declared the Chief Minister’s Village Roads scheme by name, allocated funds, and are accounting for the works implemented under the funds of the Prime Minister’s Rural Roads Project. Therefore, the DMK government must release a white paper on the ₹2,300 crore allocated for the CM’s rural roads scheme last year.” He further said

Above all, in the last nine years, the amount of funds given directly to the Gram Panchayats by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Mr.@narendramodi is ₹19,936 crores. The DMK government has asked the panchayats in Tamil Nadu to add all the remaining funds to the treasury of the Tamil Nadu government. It is in this fund that nominally the schemes are announced to the villages. I mentioned this last February 7 while speaking in Arakkonam parliamentary constituency. Will DMK’s fact-finding unit come forward to refute this with evidence?” he further questioned

If the welfare programs implemented by the central government led by our honorable Prime Minister of India, Mr.@narendramodi, are made available to the public without corruption, bribery, or commission, all the people of Tamil Nadu will benefit. Those who know DMK’s sixty-year history know very well what the purpose of changing the name of the project is, as if wearing a disguise.” He finally said

Netizens discovered the post by the TN Fact-Checking Unit to be sarcastic and proceeded to mock the unit chief D-Stock Iyan Karthikeyan for supporting the DMK blindly . They shared authentic images featuring central government schemes such as Jal Jeevan Mission stickered by DMK, some of which are provided below.

Previous Instances Of DMK & its Govt Agencies Peddling Misinformation

Previously on 24 January 2024, The official Tamil Nadu BJP handle released a video alleging severe food shortages at the MGR Stadium in Madurai, claiming athletes were provided only a chapati and a half-boiled egg. Athletes and coaches raised concerns about the inadequate food portions, with reports indicating a private contractor managing the food arrangements. The district administration, including Collector Sangeetha, intervened, assuring prompt resolution of the issues within a day. DMK MP Venkatesan emphasized the potential harm to Tamil Nadu’s reputation, and the official fact-check team of the state government refuted the claims, labeling them as fake news.

On 15 January 2024, A statement from the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) acknowledged inaccuracies in historical details related to E.V. Ramasamy (EVR), known as ‘Periyar.’ The errors included the claim that Periyar visited Anna University on 16 July 1920 instead of the correct date, 16 July 1970. Additionally, discrepancies were found in stating Periyar’s birthday as 17 September 1879, a Wednesday, whereas computer-generated information in the statement indicated a Saturday. The release also falsely attributed a quote about cell phones to Periyar, whereas it was originally made by the renowned scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla.

On 12 December 2023, The Chief Minister initially praised writer Rajasekaran Devibharathi on social media for winning the Sahitya Akademi Award. However, the celebration was short-lived when it became apparent that the Sahitya Akademi had not yet announced any awards. Consequently, the Chief Minister promptly deleted the post.

In November 2023, when allegations of Aavin reducing fat content in the green packet milk surfaced, instead of proving that the milk contained a specific amount of fat as claimed or other details that pertained to the topic of discussion, the FCU’s Mission Director ended up fact-checking the “container” in which the sample was received.

The finance minister of Tamil Nadu, Thangam Thennarasu, presented the budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 in the state assembly. Themed “overcoming obstacles and advancing towards growth,” the budget is said to focus on seven key areas crucial for progress. These areas include improving physical infrastructure, creating job opportunities, enhancing social and healthcare facilities, boosting district export initiatives, refining financial mechanisms, promoting educational excellence, and advocating environmental conservation.

Against this backdrop, the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Tamil Nadu strongly criticized the budget and issued an official statement on his official X handle that the DMK government was making empty announcements and failing to deliver on its promises. Annamalai argues that the budget lacks concrete projects, and the government is repeating the same projects from previous years without implementation. He alleged that the DMK had not earmarked funds for most of its announced schemes, relying heavily on the central government’s welfare programs. Annamalai provided examples of how the DMK has renamed central government schemes in the Tamil Nadu budget, such as presenting the POSHAN scheme as ‘Ensure Nutrition’ and the Prime Minister’s Rural Road Scheme as the Chief Minister’s Rural Road Scheme. He claims that the DMK is misleading the public by not acknowledging the central government’s contributions to these programs.

The BJP leader also highlighted discrepancies in the budget, pointing out unfulfilled promises, unspent funds, and the lack of transparency in various allocations. Annamalai questions the effectiveness of the DMK’s financial management, citing concerns about the state’s growing debt burden and the discrepancy between tax revenue growth and government spending.

He wrote, “The DMK, which has been running an advertising regime through empty announcements for three years after coming to power has once again left the people stand in the river who voted for it with a bogus budget.

Apart from the same decorative words appearing in the Tamil Nadu financial report every year, there are no concrete projects made by the Tamil Nadu government. The same projects that have been included in the budget of Tamil Nadu for the last three years, they have not been implemented yet and are being announced again and again every year as new projects. DMK does not seem to have earmarked any funds to implement most of the schemes announced in its election promises.

DMK’s financial statement shows that if the central government’s welfare schemes are removed, what is left is the naming of the bus stand and the advertisements that stand at the level of mere announcements every year. It is a joke that the DMK, which pretends that the central government’s schemes have come up with new names, or hides the central government’s contribution, is stuck unable to fully stage their drama due to lack of foresight.

The press release also pointed out how the TN government had just renamed central government schemes to present them as new schemes. Here are the few of them:

“They have tried to present the central government’s POSHAN scheme as their scheme by calling it ‘Ensure Nutrition’ (Ootachathai Urudhisei). Funding for this is provided by the central government.

The Prime Minister’s House project has been renamed as Kalaignar’s dream house. The funds for the same will go directly to the beneficiaries from the central government. If we change the name of the project, will people believe it? People question as to when Kalaingar, who lived only for his family, thought about the public?

The Prime Minister’s Rural Road Scheme has morphed into the Chief Minister’s Rural Road Scheme. Whether they have implemented them properly is also not the case.

In Tamil Nadu, hill villages are still in a dire situation of being carried on a dolly without road access for emergency medical treatment. This is the true face of the Dravidian model.

Banks provide loan assistance to Women Self Help Groups in the name of central government guidelines. People are wondering what is the DMK government’s contribution in this.

People are not ready to forget easily that the DMK lied in its election promise, that if they came to power, they will waive the jewellery loan. The DMK is advertising about women’s hostels that the central government has come up with in the name of Sakhi Nivas, and renaming them as Thozhi hostels. 20 Sakhi Nivas women’s hostels are functioning in Tamil Nadu. They are unaware of this and have mentioned it as 10 hostels in the financial report of Tamil Nadu.

To increase the green areas of the cities, the project ‘Forests in Cities’ implemented by the Central Government has been in operation since 2020. Already 10 Green ways have been developed in Tamil Nadu through this scheme. Who is the DMK government trying to deceive by hiding this as it is and announcing it as a new scheme?

The Nemmeli, Sea Water Desalination Project was launched in 2020 with a grant of ₹1,200 crore from the Central Government. In April last year, it was reported that the project would be completed and operational. But, like the scheme brought in DMK regime, ₹1,517 Crore allocation in this year’s financial statement is fooling people.

According to the financial report of Tamil Nadu, ₹452 crore has been spent on setting up model schools in Tamil Nadu. But under the Samagra Shiksha scheme, to improve the infrastructure of Tamil Nadu schools, in the last three years more than ten times that Rs. 5,856 crores they forgot to mention that the central government has provided.

Announcing that ₹7,500 crore would be spent over 5 years to improve the infrastructure of schools, till last year, Rs. 3,500 crore of funds have been earmarked under this scheme. But in this year’s report, they said that works worth Rs.2,497 crore are currently being implemented and have allocated another Rs.1,000 crore. This shows that no work has been done till last year.

The central government’s Vishwakarma welfare scheme has been renamed as the Tamil Nadu Artisan Development Scheme. Funding for this is from the central government.

Thus, all the welfare schemes mentioned in the financial statement of the Tamil Nadu government are the schemes which have been implemented for many years under the central government’s financial allocation. DMK stands up to the idea of changing their names and the idea of stickering the Dravidian name on them has become a nose cut.

Has the DMK announced any schemes of their own? Yes, they have. In every annual budget, they announce it without changing a single word. But, nothing has been implemented yet.

An allocation of ₹1,500 crore has been made this year for the rehabilitation of the Adayar river. An allocation of ₹1,500 crore was also made last year for the rehabilitation of Adayar river. We don’t know what happened to those funds.

Every year,  for the restoration of temples under the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department, ₹100 crores are usually announced. So far the funds have not been fully spent. Instead, they are taking the temple funds and spending them. Another announcement which does not change every year is the announcement of purchase of new buses and  purchase of electric buses. What is the benefit of not filling the driver vacancies to run the existing buses and just making announcements of purchase every year?

Last year, the DMK announced ₹1,000 crores worth of projects to protect the welfare of fishermen, but did not disclose how much money has been spent on them so far. No details have been given about the allocation of funds for fishermen under the scheme.

It is reported that 60,567 people have been given government employment in the last three years. Out of which only 10,600 vacancies are provided by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. The Tamil Nadu government should clarify how the remaining 50,000 posts were filled.

To top it all, Tamil Nadu’s own tax revenue has grown by 19%, but only 12% has grown, questioning the DMK government’s financial management.

The DMK only mentioned that total debt burden of the Tamil Nadu government will rise to 8.3 lakh crores in the next year, but forgot to mention the total debt burden of Tamil Nadu in the financial statement. The total debt burden of Tamil Nadu is Rs. 9.5 lakh crore would be more. DMK’s only achievement was to increase the total loan amount from Rs 5.6 lakh crore last year by raising to Rs 4 lakh crore within 4 years.

DMK’s election promises that were not included in this year’s financial statement either.

  • A subsidy of  ₹100 for each cylinder
  • The 100-day work schedule will be increased to 150 days
  • Cancellation of education loan
  • Earmarking ₹15,000 crore to provide loan assistance in easy installments to re-operate industries closed during the Covid-19 pandemic
  • MSP for paddy will be raised to ₹2500 per quintal, while the MSP for sugarcane will be raised to ₹4000
  • Petrol price reduction by ₹5 per litre and diesel price by ₹4 per litre
  • Free tablets to students studying in higher secondary schools and colleges in TN – these tablets will be provided with internet connection download facility 10GB per month in 4G & 5G internet service
  • 2 lakh houses will be built for fishermen
  • Permanent job assurance for Part-time teachers and  nurses
  • Electricity to be billed once a month

Annamalai concluded, “What is the benefit to the people of reading financial status report for three consecutive years without any announcements about important promises in 511 election promises? The reality is that the Chief Minister, who goes on pleasure trips with his family to foreign countries every year in the name of attracting investment, has not brought even a single rupee of investment to Tamil Nadu so far. How many days can we go on with this worn-out Dravidian model of putting the burden of debt on the heads of the people, without the thought of people’s welfare programs in the financial statement, without fully implementing the programs already in operation, without fulfilling the election promises? People are watching.

The DMK government’s tendency to claim credit for achievements it hasn’t accomplished is not a new phenomenon. In its latest attempt to do so, it has inadvertently peddled false information.

Chief Minister MK Stalin took to his social media to boast about Tamil Nadu having introduced Artificial Intelligence modules in the state government schools through Microsoft’s TEALS programme.

Technology Education and Learning Support (TEALS) is an initiative by Microsoft Philanthropies designed to establish enduring computer science (CS) programs within high schools. In July 2023, the school education department in Tamil Nadu entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Microsoft for the introduction of TEALS. Subsequently, the program was initiated as a pilot project in 14 schools throughout the state. Through this, over 38,000 students enrolled in grades 6 through 9 across 100 government schools will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

However, it is not like the Government of Tamil Nadu thought about this on its own and introduced it in schools.

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has recommended introducing contemporary subjects like Artificial Intelligence in curriculum, at relevant stages. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced Artificial Intelligence as a subject in class IX from session 2019-2020 and in Class-XI from session 2020-2021 in their affiliated schools.

This was pointed out by BJP Tamil Nadu Head K. Annamalai on his social media page.

He issued a statement in his X handle expressing his gratitude to the state government for incorporating Artificial Intelligence into the curriculum for government school students and partnering with Microsoft Inc. which aligns with CBSE’s decision to introduce AI for Class VI to VIII, following the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Further stated that the Tamil Nadu BJP is pleased to observe the DMK government’s efforts in aligning with the NEP 2020 introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and anticipating for the consideration of the 3-language policy.

DMK Govt’s Own Information & Public Relations Department Peddles False Info

In a swift response, the DMK government displayed its stance hastily with the Tamil Nadu Department of Information & Public Relations (DIPR) sharing a statement in which it mentioned about its ideologue EV Ramasamy Naicker (hailed as ‘Periyar’ by followers) visiting Guindy Engineering College (now Anna University). However, there were inaccuracies in the official press release of the DMK government.

It stated that EVR visited Anna University on 16 July 1920 instead of 16 July 1970. Furthermore, another error was noted in the report concerning EVR’s birthday, which is 17 September 1879, falling on a Wednesday. However in the statement, it was stated that computer-generated information indicated his birthday as a Saturday.

Here’s what the official press release of the Tamil Nadu government said:

Tamil Nadu has a unique history and tradition in the field of Information Technology. On 16 July 1920, Thanthai Periyar was invited as the chief guest for a Tamil forum held at College of Engineering, Guindy (today’s Anna University). Periyar who went there was informed by a few professors that a new computer has been brought for the college and he expressed his interest in seeing it. Even though he was unable to climb the stairs due to his old age, he asked people to lift him and take him to the first floor and saw the computer. At that time, the name ‘kanini’ was not kept for the computer. It was a 1620 model IBM computer. When he professors told Periyar that the computer can give the exact day of a particular date, Periyar mentioned a few dates and checked if the computer was giving the correct day. He mentioned his birthday and the computer rightly told it was a Saturday.

The DIPR release also said “At that time itself, Periyar predicted about today’s cell phones saying that in future everyone will have a communication device in their pocket.

The Truth

The IBM 1620 computer was first used in July 1963 at IIT Kanpur. In August 1963, IIT Kanpur received delivery of an IBM 1620 computer. The computer center at IIT Kanpur featured a central processor equipped with a core storage capacity of 40,000 digits (IBM 1620), along with three 7330 magnetic tape units, a 1622 card input-output device, twenty key-punch machines, and an IBM 407 accounting machine that served as a printer. This information has been recorded by V. Rajaraman based on the report authored by Norman C. Dahl in ‘Revolution on the Ganges: A Report on the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur’, published in Tech Engineering News in April 1967.

College of Engineering got a IBM 1620 computer in 1963 too and not 1920 as mentioned in the DIPR release.

Also, contrary to the information given in the DIPR release, EVR was born on a Wednesday and not on Saturday.

And the quote about cell phones attributed to EVR was originally said by the famed scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla.

BJP Tamil Nadu Head Calls Out Dravidian Model Of ‘Stickering’

Tamil Nadu BJP chief highlighted the errors in his statement on 14 January 2024 pointing out inaccuracies in the official press release of the state government.

In sarcastic and jibe-laden X post, Annamalai said “It is not a big surprise that lately, all the reports that should be published in the name of the DMK party are published in the name of the Information & Public Relations Department of the Tamil Nadu Government. In a few days, DMK party’s internal affairs like suspension of a DMK executive who quarreled at a biryani shop, may be informed to the public through the public relations department of the Tamil Nadu government. Abuses of power by DMK are not new to Tamil Nadu.

Annamalai further added “I don’t see the need to issue a report in such a hurry without even noticing that there are so many errors in the report. The use of artificial intelligence was announced as early as 2018, mentioned in the Draft National Education Policy for 2019, and then included in the new National Education Policy released by the Central Government in July 2020. However, the policy of Tamil Nadu government in this regard was published only in the month of September 2020. It has been proved that the statement that Tamil Nadu formulated a policy for this before the National Education Policy was formulated is a lie. Have you thought that if you hide the month by not mentioning it in your report, you can deceive people?

He further said “Another error in the report is that Periyar went to Guindy College of Engineering in 1920 instead of 1970. An IBM 1620 computer was purchased for the Guindy College of Engineering in 1963. Does the DMK claim that the computer was brand new until Periyar went seven years later in 1970? Periyar’s birthday was September 17, 1879 on a Wednesday. Another error in the report is that the computer said his birthday was Saturday. In 1967, the then Bombay, and then in the late 1990s, many cities including Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad started developing in the IT sector. Tamil Nadu is progressing in this sector through the talented youth of Tamil Nadu. But it is ridiculous that DMK has issued a statement that other states do not know what information technology is. On behalf of BJP Tamil Nadu, I would like to request the DMK government not to issue a statement with false information in an emergency for fear of coercion, and once again thank you for conveying the aspects of the new education policy to the students of Tamil Nadu.

Following the release of his statement on X handle, Sun News and TN DIPR promptly deleted their posts and corrected their statements.

https://twitter.com/OnlyTruth2024/status/1746510605580931211

This spurred a celebratory atmosphere among the internet users associated with the Tamil Nadu BJP cadre, leading to the mocking of DMK.

https://twitter.com/OnlyTruth2024/status/1746515830274490529

Another user humorously mocked that Sun News would release a statement, Annamalai will point out inaccuracies, and then Tamil Nadu DIPR would step in to correct the mistakes and re-release it.

Where Is Mission Director?

The MK Stalin-led DMK government recently formed a “Fact-Checking Unit” allegedly in violation of established norms. Many called it as an attempt to muzzle voices critical of the government in social media.

One Dravidianist porpagandist Iyan Karthikeyan, a former YouTuber who ran a self-styled “fact-checking” website called YouTurn has been appointed as the Mission Director of the so-called “Fact-Checking Unit” who draws a salary of 3 lakhs per month of taxpayer’s money.

This blatant peddling of misinformation and the major embarrassment to the DMK government has led many to ask about the point of having a “Fact-Checking Unit”.

Many on social media asked what is the “Mission Director” doing when the government itself was peddling false information.
