Dayanidhi Maran, former Union Minister and current DMK MP, has issued a legal notice to his elder brother Kalanithi Maran, highlighting an internal feud within the family that owns Sun TV Network Limited, one of India’s largest media companies.

The notice, dated June 10, 2025, accuses Kalanithi Maran — Chairman of Sun TV and a billionaire media baron — of engaging in alleged fraudulent activities, including financial misconduct and money laundering. It calls for the reinstatement of the company’s shareholding structure to its original format from 2003, invoking the legacy of their father, the late Murasoli Maran, and MK Dayalu, the spouse of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

The legal communication has been addressed not just to Kalanithi, but also to seven others including his wife, Kaveri Maran.

According to Moneycontrol, the document claims that during a period when the Maran patriarch was critically ill in 2003, Kalanithi and Kaveri allegedly devised a plan — with the involvement of others — to secure control of the company. It alleges that on September 15, 2003, Kalanithi illegally allocated 12 lakh shares to himself at a face value of ₹10 each, despite the market value being estimated between ₹2,500–₹3,000 per share at the time. This move, the notice says, gave him a controlling stake in Sun TV while significantly diluting the shares of the original family members.

At the time of the alleged transaction, the company was not in need of capital, raising further questions about the intent behind the allotment. According to the notice, prior to this move, Kalanithi held no shares in the company, but this transaction elevated his ownership dramatically, sidelining the original promoters.

Currently, Kalanithi Maran owns 75% of the listed Sun TV Network and is valued at $2.9 billion. The notice accuses him of benefiting from dividends worth ₹5,926 crore in 2023 and ₹455 crore in 2024 alone.

Dayanidhi Maran now seeks government intervention and has stated his intent to approach the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), claiming the actions in question violate both corporate and criminal laws. He alleges that the difference between the ₹1.2 crore paid for the 12 lakh shares and their actual estimated worth of ₹3,500 crore constitutes criminal proceeds, and further accuses all respondents of laundering this money.

The notice also revisits a past dispute between the Marans and the Karunanidhi family, citing that MK Dayalu’s shares were undervalued and bought out for ₹100 crore despite a significantly higher post-IPO valuation of the company.

It also raises concerns about misleading claims in the company’s 2006 Red Herring Prospectus (RHP), specifically regarding a supposed ₹10.64 crore dividend payment to Mallika Maran — a claim the notice disputes.

In addition, the notice claims the allegedly ill-gotten wealth was used to acquire major assets and companies under the Sun Group umbrella, including Sun Direct TV, Kal Airways, Kal Publications, South Asian FM, Sun Pictures, and even sports franchises like Sunrisers Hyderabad and teams in South Africa and the UK.

The legal demand is for Kalanithi to restore the shareholding to its 2003 structure and return all profits, dividends, assets, and other financial gains accrued since then to the rightful heirs of Murasoli Maran and MK Dayalu.

The notice warns of civil, criminal, and regulatory consequences if these conditions are not met. It also references an earlier legal notice sent in October 2024, which received only a vague reply. Following that, Kalanithi allegedly made a ₹500 crore settlement payment to another sibling, Anbukarasi.

While Moneycontrol has yet to verify whether Kalanithi has formally responded to the latest notice, sources close to the matter suggest this is a private family issue that may not affect Sun TV’s operational affairs.

The Lok Sabha witnessed a heated exchange on 2 April 2025 as BJP MP Tejasvi Surya delivered a blistering counter to DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran’s allegations against the Waqf Amendment Bill, systematically dismantling claims of anti-minority bias with legal precision and historical evidence.

Maran, speaking against the bill, had accused the government of targeting Muslim properties while ignoring corporate debts and practicing divisive politics. He cited the BJP’s reduced seat count in Uttar Pradesh (from 71 in 2014 to 36 in 2024) as proof that itspolitics of hatehad failed. He further claimed the government was systematically sidelining minorities, warning, First Muslims, then Christians, then Dalits—soon there will be no one left.”

Exposing theConstitutional Fraud’

Surya began by arguing that the Waqf laws enacted by the Congress over the decades had established an entity more powerful than the government itself. He called it,seven decades of constitutional fraud perpetuated by the Congress and its allies through previous Waqf laws. He cited Section 40 of the 2013 Waqf Amendment, which granted Waqf Boards unchecked power to declare any property as Waqf land based solely on belief”without documentation or due process. He described this as a direct assault on property rights, as affected individuals were left with no legal recourse except appealing to a Waqf tribunal, which he called akangaroo court.”

“Where in the world does a body get to act as prosecutor, judge, and executioner? Surya demanded.

“This Frankenstein monster was created by the Congress, enabling land grabs with no right to appeal. He cited cases from Karnataka where farmers lost ancestral lands overnight, linking some suicides to these seizures.

Addressing the Land Encroachment Issue

Refuting Maran’s rhetoric about Hindu land being taken away, Surya pointed to the vast land holdings under Waqf control. He highlighted the case of Karnataka, where he alleged that 15,000 acres of land in a single district had been taken over by the Waqf Board, often at the cost of farmers who had tilled the land for generations. He further argued that such unilateral powers had led to multiple farmer suicides due to sudden land encroachments.

The Discriminatory Nature of Waqf Laws

The BJP MP also dismantled the opposition’s secularism argument, highlighting Congress’ double standards—freezing Hindu claims via the 1991 Places of Worship Act while empowering Waqf Boards to appropriate land under the 1995 and 2013 amendments. Why should Hindus, Jains, or Christians have no say in Waqf governance when their lands are at risk? he challenged.

Calling Out Vote-Bank Politics

In response to Maran’s allegations that the government was targeting minorities, Surya turned the tables by accusing the opposition of indulging in vote-bank politics. He noted that while the 1991 Places of Worship Act prevented Hindus from reclaiming historical sites, the 1995 Waqf Act gave Waqf Boards unchecked powers to claim lands. He exposed what he called the Congress party’s double standards, stating that their version of secularism favored appeasement over true equality.

Quoting Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s poetry, Surya concluded with a civilizational rebuttal: Hindus don’t covet others’ lands. Our ethos wins hearts, not territory. The speech left the opposition scrambling, with AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi repeatedly interrupting before being silenced by the Speaker.

DMK leaders who often conveniently resort to spreading misleading narratives to defend their party’s stance. However, when scrutinized, these claims often collapse, revealing the reality behind them. A recent example is DMK’s Chennai Central MP, Dayanidhi Maran, who attempted to push the false narrative that Google CEO Sundar Pichai studied under Tamil Nadu’s two-language policy. His claim was disproven when it was revealed that Pichai studied at Jawahar Vidyalaya Senior Secondary School in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, an institution that follows the CBSE curriculum, which does not enforce a two-language policy but instead allows students the freedom to choose their preferred languages.

Dayanidhi Maran’s Remarks at a Public Event

Dayanidhi Maran inaugurated a three-day state-level men’s and women’s volleyball tournament organized by the Keeramangalam Vembangudi West Volleyball Association in the Alangudi Assembly Constituency of Pudukkottai district. The event took place in the presence of DMK Minister Raghupathi and MLA Meiyanathan.

Speaking to the media, Maran accused certain individuals of deliberately filing false cases against DMK members and attempting to incite unrest. He claimed that the DMK was handling these legal challenges effectively and emerging victorious.

He also commented on the ongoing debate regarding constituency delimitation, stating that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was the first in India to raise his voice against the BJP’s alleged attempt to dominate the country’s governance through Hindi-speaking MPs. Maran argued that Tamil Nadu’s opposition had inspired other southern states to join the cause and expressed confidence that the Chief Minister would succeed in his stance.

Maran further defended Tamil Nadu’s two-language policy, asserting that students educated in Tamil and English had consistently excelled. He attempted to support his claim by stating, “The chairman of Google studied only two languages.” He also questioned why northern states did not adopt trilingual education, arguing that Tamil Nadu should not be forced to do so if others were not.

Additionally, he criticized Tamil Nadu BJP State President K. Annamalai, accusing him of ridiculing the state’s language policies. Maran also referenced the composition of Indian and Tamil Nadu cricket teams, implying that there was an underlying issue of community-based dominance in the sport.

Where Did Sundar Pichai Study?

Sundar Pichai completed his schooling at Jawahar Vidyalaya Senior Secondary School in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He later attended Vana Vani School, located on the IIT Madras campus.

Jawahar Vidyalaya Senior Secondary School in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, follows the CBSE curriculum, which generally implements the three-language policy. Under this policy, English is the primary medium of instruction, while students have the option to choose a second and third language which could be Tamil, Hindi, English, French, etc.

DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran, on 11 February 2025, opposed the simultaneous interpretation of Lok Sabha proceedings in Sanskrit, arguing that it was unnecessary and a waste of taxpayers’ money. He linked the move to RSS ideology and questioned the relevance of Sanskrit as a communicative language.

During Question Hour, Maran cited the 2011 Census, which recorded only 73,000 Sanskrit speakers, and emphasized that while he supported interpretation in official state languages, he objected to Sanskrit being included. He said, “Sir, you are giving translation, which is most welcome, for the languages, which are the state languages, official state languages, can you tell me which state official language is Sanskrit? Why are we wasting taxpayers’ money with this language, which is not even communicable, nobody communicates with it in any of the states in India, nobody speaks with it. The population survey in 2011 said only 73000 people are supposed to be speaking. Sir, when there is data, why should the taxpayers’ money be wasted because of your RSS ideologies?”

While he received belt treatment from the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla who schooled him that he was living in Bharat where Sanskrit is one of the official languages and is recognised by the House. Om Birla asserted that Sanskrit has been India’s primary language. Birla clarified that interpretation services were being provided in multiple languages, not just Sanskrit, and later announced the inclusion of six more languages—Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, Manipuri, Sanskrit, and Urdu—for simultaneous interpretation in Parliament.

However, it is noteworthy that Maran exposed his ignorance when he claimed that only 73000 people in India spoke the language. Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have designated Sanskrit as official languages of the state. In 2010, Uttarakhand became the first state in India to designate Sanskrit as its second official language. In 2019, Himachal Pradesh followed as the second state to grant Sanskrit the same status.

Additionally, Wikipedia says that there are 2,360,821 total speakers of Sanskrit in India, as of 2011. So, on both fronts – be it numbers or assuming that no one speaks it or its official status, Dayanidhi Maran has made a fool of himself by just opening his mouth over a non-issue and creating an illusion that he is fighting for judicious use of taxpayers’ money!

As DMK MPs protested the move, Birla questioned Maran’s objection. Om Birla replied, “Respected member, which country are you living in? This is Bharat, and its primary language has been Sanskrit. That is why we interpreted in 22 recognized languages in Parliament. Not just in Sanskrit. Why do you have a problem with Sanskrit? You have a problem with Hindi and Sanskrit. There are 22 languages in the country that are recognised in the Parliament and simultaneous interpretations will take place in the 22 languages and the simultaneous interpretation will take place in Hindi as well as Sanskrit.”

Central Chennai DMK Lok Sabha MP Dayanidhi Maran has once again trained his guns on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Disrespectful language, spewing lies, and venom are notable characteristics that Maran always espouses.

Speaking to the press in Coimbatore, Maran, when asked about the GST-bun-Annapoorna Hotel owner’s alleged apology issue, said, “We are elected by the people and become MPs and thus we know people’s problems. But some are not elected by the people and are appointed. She has been in the role of a minister for the past 10 years. They do not know people’s problems. If we ask, she will say, I don’t eat onion, I don’t eat that. Is this how one should talk? As our leader says, we will work for those who vote for us and do not vote for us. I will even go further and say our leader tells us we are not MPs but we must solve people’s problems like a councilor does. This is the role the organization gave us. That is the tradition we come from. These people do not meet the people ever and they only know how to abuse power. What did Annapoorna Srinivasan ask? He had an issue and he put it forward. What is wrong with asking? He even asked to make the tax uniform, he even said FM could increase the tax but make it simple. Is this wrong? To call him over and threaten him, is that right? This shows her animosity and bitterness towards the people of Coimbatore. She thought she could threaten the people of Coimbatore, if anyone speaks anything in public, they can be summoned the next day and threatened. Is this right? A while ago, there was a meeting in Mumbai. A person from Gujarat questioned the government over surcharges and taxes and even called the government a sleeping partner, and that the government was surviving on his tax money. Nirmala Sitharaman responded to him with a smile. If he is from Gujarat and speaks Hindi, then one should give respect. If we speak in Tamil, is it so cheap? Won’t we question it? The people here are also Indian citizens. It is our right to question. If we have a query, the government/minister has to address it properly. The action of the irresponsible minister is regrettable.”

A reporter then mentioned Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s comments on NEET, stating that more poor students are now able to study medical degrees because of NEET and do not have to pay much fees. Maran replied, Earlier there was a capitation fee. They first said they were going to get rid of the capitation fee. At that time, the annual fees for medicine were around 25,000-30,000. Today a private college charges 25 lakhs. Who is responsible for this? The union (ondriya) government.” Then he goes on to speak disrespectfully and says “Indha amma.”

He continued, “In 2018, this lady came, the (ondriya) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, after Jayalalithaa died, as if this lady is going to become the Chief Minister, she camped here (dera) for 3 months. Why did she do that? She hoped to become CM and topple the “slave” rule (adimai aatchi). At that time, she said there would be no NEET that year. She said we are struggling with that. When you had a dream of becoming CM, you speak differently.” Here he used the word you as “nee” to address Nirmala Sitharaman in singular (disrespectful).

It is noteworthy that former TN CM J Jayalalithaa passed away in 2016.

He continued, “Now you don’t have that dream, so you speak differently. What did you achieve out of this? There are doctors who treat the PM, President, and even Nirmala Sitharaman, did they write NEET? The best doctors are the ones who did not write NEET.”

He further said, “In the 60s, what did you do? You said knowledge of Sanskrit is mandatory. What is the connection between Sanskrit and learning medicine? There is only one connection. Only the upper caste can study medicine. Other caste people should not study. Now what are they doing with NEET? There is so much confusion with the question papers. They are saying you can write the exam in Japan. The paper leaked there and came to India, where they leaked the answer sheet. So much corruption has happened, and a CBI inquiry is going on. Did the concerned minister resign? They are covering it up. In the south, the NEET exam is very difficult, by the time they check the questions, they forget what they have studied but if you check the states in the north, parents and teachers help the students to copy during the exam, especially in UP and Gujarat. To qualify for NEET, students must have at least 50% marks in 12th standard. But in Gujarat, a student got 720/720 but did she pass 12th? She failed. She attempts once again, and even then she fails but in NEET alone she gets 100%. What does this show, there are problems and with these, the Union government is trying to oppress us. We oppose this.”

BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan slammed Maran for his disrespectful remarks. She wrote, “Is this your Dravidian upbringing @Dayanidhi_Maran? Spreading false slander about a woman minister holding a key position in our Union Cabinet as a “campaign with dreams of becoming Chief Minister” and saying “you, come, go (nee va po)” without respect and civility in public is highly condemnable. We have seen that if a woman rises in politics and power, you and your party leaders, your coalition leaders, and your mercenary speakers will not hesitate to criticize her. But you and your alliance leader Mr. @EVKSElangovan take turns criticizing our Union Finance Minister Mrs. @nsitharaman. Is this the Dravidian policy? Is this what the I.N.D.I.Alliance is proclaiming as their policy? Do you, who were embroiled in corruption cases, have the basic qualification to talk about our Union Finance Minister who was the first woman Defence Minister? Therefore, we urge you to stop criticizing the rising women in politics and the shining women in power and stop being jealous of them with such low-level comments, and at least promote “civilized politics” that your party members are not used to.”

This is not the first time Dayanidhi Maran has spoken disrespectfully about Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

“Nirmala Mami”

In August 2023, the DMK organised a “day-long fast” on 20 August 2023 to protest against the union government’s insistence on continuing with the exam. Speaking at the event, DMK MP and former Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, made several casteist remarks against Brahmins and in particular against Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

He said, “Anitha’s (the girl who died by suicide in 2017 after being unable to secure a medical seat) brother spoke here today and he said 2017, the year Anitha died, was an important year. Why do you think is it an important year? It is because in 2016, J Jayalalithaa passed away and BJP wanted to use every opportunity to come to power with the help of the “slaves” and that is why they sent “Nirmala Mami”. Ok, they sent Nirmala Sitharaman. What she does is (laughs, as someone points out why he mentioned the word Mami – he responds by saying, I said it inadvertently.)

He continued to say, “That woman has no work in Tamil Nadu, she is not even an elected Rajya Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu, and she has never come to this side. She claims to have been born here and probably has her roots in Tamil Nadu, she knows several languages but doesn’t care for the state at all.”

“Unga Thopanaar”

In a nearly 18-minute-long tirade in Parliament in February 2024, Dayanidhi Maran went on a lengthy rant and peddled lies about the Finance Minister, the Prime Minister, and the BJP government at the centre while hiding facts from the members of the House.

He started by saying, “This interim budget is an eyewash, it is a huge disappointment especially since this budget is useless for the poor. The middle-class people were expecting tax benefits since they kept on saying they are doing good things but all they got was ‘naamam’” – a derogatory representation of the Vaishnavite mark on the forehead connected to cheating.

After fumbling through numbers and mumbling some nonsense on the budget, he starts to target Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. He said, “We are proud of her since she is a Tamilian, she was born in TN and belongs to the state, we thought she was a good person, a mighty person, but all that comes out of her mouth is different from the truth. She said this interim budget was focused on the poor, youth, and women. But the truth is that the rich such as Ambani, Adani, and Tata are becoming richer and the poor becoming poorer. The revenue of India – 40% of it is held by the Tatas, Ambanis, and Adanis. The middle class is becoming poor, they are not having any income. They said they would provide jobs for youth, when – after they are re-elected to power. Mr Prime Minister, in 2014 you said you would generate 2 crore jobs per year, what happened to that? For 10 years you were all talk and no action – Dayanidhi Maran used the Tamil phrase “Vaaila Vadai Sudardu” to explain this. Opportunities for women are decreasing”, he further mumbled some numbers fumbling all the while.

He continued his tirade and peddled the same lies that the DMK has been peddling all this time. He said, “You waived off all the loans given to Ambani, Adani, and Tata (instead of saying write off)

You never waived off farmer loans but did that only for the rich people’s loans. You brought anti-farmer laws but the people opposed them and you repealed them.”

He again fumbles mentioning numbers about inflation. He claimed that the price of essential commodities was going up constantly, the highest in 30 years. He also added that people were instead losing their savings.

Now comes the anti-TN stance claim. He said, “Last year when the Michaung cyclone hit Chennai, our CM Stalin met PM and asked for 7033 crores as relief.  12655 crores was also asked. But till now what did we get? Zero. We did not receive even a naya paisa from the “Union” government. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh came to TN to oversee the relief efforts, and even Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also came, she saw, waved her hands, spoke some things, gave interviews, and left without giving even a single rupee. The cruelty of this is that we said we are not asking for your money, just give us from our tax revenue share, our TN’s future Udhayanidhi Stalin asked. He said, we are not asking for your money or your father’s money, just give our tax revenue share. In response to that, our Finance minister held a press conference, and for one hour she lashed out at us. What did she say? That Udhayanidhi Stalin did not speak respectfully, he should not say words like your father’s money or mother’s money. But she didn’t realise that the PM himself once asked if it was your “grandfather’s money”. Didn’t Nirmala Sitharaman find time to advise him? I am asking her, Madam Nirmala Sitharaman, you are speaking about mother’s money, I ask you in return, is it your father’s (thopanaar) money? (Here Dayanidhi Maran has used the word Thopanaar, which is a Tambram dialect directed at the background of Nirmala Sitharaman). If I say that, will it be nice? No, right? It is exactly that, your speech was filled with vehemence.”

“This Lady”

At a protest in Chennai in July 2024 protesting the “neglect” on TN, Maran spoke about Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. He said, “The one who reads the budget, every single time, this Nirmala is there no, she always quotes a Thirukkural. This time, she neither quoted a Kural nor Tamil or Tamil Nadu. When they did not get votes from here (TN), they did this. I don’t know where this lady Nirmala Sitharaman studied on this earth. She created a new “East“. She says Bihar is East, Andhra Pradesh is East, and others are not. West Bengal is not East for her, nor is Odisha. Even though Andhra is only a short distance from here, it is east, and we are not. This is cheating. Nirmala Sitharaman has created a new earth.”

He further said, “I asked her, what is this, madam? Why are you saying this? Who elected you? She is not an elected member but a nominated member. So, she is not worried about the problems faced by the people.”

Recalling the floods of 2023 in TN, he said“When the state was affected by the floods last year, it was a never-before-seen type of flood. The rains hit Thoothukudi in January 2024 after affecting Chennai in December 2023. It was an unprecedented flood. We asked them ₹35,000 crores; they gave us only ₹257 crores. They gave us peanuts and asked us to pick it up. But Bihar got ₹35,000 crores. Last year, Gujarat faced floods. They gave ₹1000 crores the next day without even being asked. Our CM is so great, he said he will ‘save the people whether you give us the money or not.”

Opposition leaders, including DMK leaders, criticised the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 introduced in the Lok Sabha by Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. DMK MP Kanimozhi even claimed that the inclusion of non-Muslims in the Waqf Board would put mosques in danger. Some members called for the bill’s withdrawal, while others suggested a parliamentary committee review it.

Waqf Bill introduced in Lok Sabha

Rijiju introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 in the Lok Sabha on 8 August 2024. This Bill proposes amendments to the Waqf Act of 1995. The bill aims to address issues related to the powers of State Waqf Boards, registration and surveying of waqf properties, and removing encroachments.

As usual, the opposition parties, including Congress, DMK, NCP, Trinamool Congress, and AIMIM, strongly criticised the proposed bill, arguing that its provisions undermine federalism and constitutional principles and play the cards of minority appeasement. While some members called for the bill’s withdrawal, others suggested that a parliamentary committee review it.

Govt response to criticism

In response to the opposition’s concerns, Rijiju emphasised that the government acted on recommendations from a panel established during the Congress-led UPA government.

Kiren Rijiju said, “This bill being brought today is based on the report of Sachar committee which you made (Congress), and the bill has been now titled – ‘United Waqf Act Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act’, 1995- ‘UMEED’.”

Rijiju agreed to the suggestion that a parliamentary committee review it. He proposed that a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) be formed to conduct a thorough review of the bill.

Additionally, he introduced the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2024, which seeks to repeal the Mussalman Wakf Act of 1923.

DMK ministers react

Thoothukkudi DMK MP Kanimozhi disapproved of the bill, stating, “(The bill) is against the constitution, against federalism, against religious minority, and against human beings. It shuns justice in every possible way, this bill violates article 25 and 26 of the constitution which says, ‘we have right to follow a religion and have rights to manage religious affairs’. The bill allows non-Muslims to be a part of Waqf Board.” She then questioned, “Will it be possible for a Muslim or a Christian to be a part of a board which manages a Hindu temple, would you allow that?”

Kanimozhi also argued that the bill infringes upon Article 30 of the constitution, said, “It is a direct violation of Article 30 which deals with minorities to administer their institutions. This bill targets a particular religious group.

Feeling emboldened by the lack of criticism following her speech, Kanimozhi began spreading falsehoods and was met with a stern rebuke in Parliament. Kanimozhi claimed, “We know already that many old mosques are in danger today. Suddenly, there is a PIL (filed). The people and archaeologists are sent there, and they discover that there was a temple before this. Then there is hate and division, followed by these issues (arise) among the people of the country.”

Her conspiracy theory in opposition of the Waqf Bill was swiftly rejected by members of the house, who were keen to prevent her from spreading further misinformation under the guise of appeasing Muslims.

The DMK MP from Central Chennai, Dayanidhi Maran, said.

“I don’t understand why they are continuously trying to irritate the Muslim community, trying to dominate them, trying to show that they are superior. This exercise looks like a land-grabbing exercise. Basically, this Government has not done anything good for the people but is trying to take revenge on the minorities.”

VCK

Chidambaram VCK MP Thol Thirumavalavan said, “I firmly oppose this Bill at its introduction. It appears to be introduced with the intent of undermining national unity and disrupting the existing harmony among communities. It is distressing to see efforts to alienate Muslims, who are part of the Indian fabric, and to interfere with their rights, which is unconstitutional. This bill seeks to strip away the constitutional freedoms and rights that have long been protected. The Waqf Board has operated independently for years, and every religion is entitled to its freedoms under the secular framework of the Indian Constitution.”

“Given this context, it is perilous for the government to take a religiously biased stance and encroach upon religious freedoms, as this could threaten national unity. Therefore, I oppose this bill in its introductory stage and urge its withdrawal. I also request that it be referred to the Standing Committee for a thorough review,” he added.

Kerala Congress

Alappuzha Congress MP KC Venugopal’s drama was at an all-time high in the Parliament. In opposition to the proposed Waqf Bill, he said, “This bill is a fundamental attack on the Constitution…Through this bill, they are putting a provision that non-Muslims also be members of the Waqf governing council. It is a direct attack on freedom of religion…Next, you will go for Christians, then Jains…The people of India will not buy this kind of divisive politics now. We are Hindus, but at the same time, we respect the faith of other religions. This bill is specialised for the Maharashtra and Haryana elections. You do not understand that last time, the people of India taught you a lesson. This is an attack on the federal system.”

AIMIM

Asaduddin Owaisi, chief of the AIMIM and Hyderabad MP, criticised the bill as discriminatory and arbitrary, accusing the government of dividing the nation. He argued that the bill infringes upon the fundamental Right to Freedom of Religion enshrined in the Constitution. His opposition includes a claimed that the Waqf Bill would enable the government to take control not only of Waqf properties but also of dargahs and mosques.

Owaisi contended, “No law limits the right of a person to will their property or dispose of it. But look at what you are doing – Hindus can give complete property to a daughter or son. I, as a Muslim, can only give one-third. I can gift but cannot give it to Allah. You are stopping me from praying. You are restraining work for Allah.”

He particularly criticised the provision that bars individuals who have converted to Islam for less than five years from making donations to Waqf. “To insist that a person has been practising for five years — how can this be verified? Who will decide? Does a new convert have to wait for five years to donate? Isn’t that a violation of the right to freedom of religion?” Owaisi argued, highlighting that such restrictions do not apply to Hindus, Sikhs, or followers of other religions.

Owaisi also accused the bill of violating Constitutional Articles 14 and 15, which guarantee equality before the law and prohibit religious discrimination, respectively. He charged that the government is unqualified to make these amendments and is exacerbating divisions within the country. “This bill violates the principles of Articles 14, 15 and 25 of the Constitution. This bill is both discriminatory and arbitrary. By bringing this bill, you (the Central government) are dividing the nation, not uniting it. This bill is an evidence of the fact that you are an enemy of the Muslims,” Owaisi declared.

Proposed changes to the Waqf Bill

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 proposes renaming the Waqf Act, 1995, to the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development Act, 1995. It aims to redefine “waqf” to include only those who have practised Islam for at least five years and hold ownership of the property. The bill also seeks to ensure that the creation of Waqf-alal-aulad does not negate inheritance rights for women.

Key changes include removing provisions related to “waqf by the user,” assigning the role of Survey Commissioner to a Deputy Collector or equivalent officer, broadening the composition of the Central Waqf Council and State Waqf Boards to include Muslim women and non-Muslims, and establishing a separate Board of Auqaf for Boharas and Aghakhanis.

The bill also proposes to streamline the registration of waqfs via a central portal, clarify the procedures for property mutation according to revenue laws, and reform the Tribunal structure to include two members with appeals to the High Court within ninety days. Additionally, the government plans to withdraw the Waqf Properties (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Bill, 2014, which the previous Congress-led UPA government introduced.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) organized protests across Tamil Nadu on 27 July 2024, accusing the Union Budget 2024 of neglecting the state. DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran led the protests in Chennai. He claimed the budget discriminated against Tamil Nadu and that the central government had overlooked the state’s needs. The protests were held at various district headquarters across the state.

Dayanidhi Maran has once again stoked controversy for mocking Prime Minister Modi. He started by quoting PM Modi, who spoke about Tamil pride and expressed his love for Tamil language during the campaign for Lok Sabha elections 2024 back in April. He said, “The one who had stated that he would like to be reborn as a Tamilian in his next birth and one who spoke Tamil, who said it, KD Modi.”

KD is a colloquial term used to address a “Known Depradator” – a repeat offender in the eyes of the law. However, using it to speak about the Prime Minister is nothing short of derogatory.

He further said, “The elections went on for over 45 days. In the final phase, while campaigning in Odisha for the local elections. There is an IAS officer called Pandian, a Tamilian who has been living in Odisha for a long time and has even married an Odisha lady. He is almost an Odisha person himself. He is a very important person for the CM there. Modi says, ‘Can a Tamilian rule Odisha? Can Odisha be in the control of a Tamilian?’ He says he wants to be born as a Tamilian; he will do anything for votes. This is such a bad thing. How can we not condemn this? We will not forget it.”

Speaking about the alliance partners TDP and RJD, he said, “They said they will get 400+ seats, but they got only 240, so they need the help of 2 giants – Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar. Was he (Modi) justified in his actions? He gave ₹35000 crores to Nitish Kumar for flood relief. Bihar is a Hindi-speaking state, so he gave that amount. Do you know how he screwed Naidu? He gave him ₹16000 crores – that too, how do you know? He asked Naidu to take it as a loan, which would be given a loan guarantee by the union government. He has to pay both the principal and the interest. That is how Modi screwed Naidu. Very soon, Naidu will screw Modi, and this government will fall. This is the truth. This Modi government always gives more and more to the Hindi-speaking states only. Non-Hindi speaking states are being avenged by the Modi government.”

He said, “I told him to take lessons from our CM, Dravidian CM, MK Stalin. When Stalin became the Chief Minister, he said, ‘I will work not only for the people who voted for me but also for the people who did not vote for me; it is my duty.’ Shouldn’t you (Modi) also do the same? If you come here and talk about caste and religion, will we accept you? They always speak about Thirukkural.”

Jumping on to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, he said, “The one who reads the budget, every single time, this Nirmala is there no, she always quotes a Thirukkural.

Recalling the floods of 2023 in TN, he said, “When the state was affected by the floods last year, it was a never-before-seen type of flood. Our CM is so great, he said he will ‘save the people whether you give us the money or not‘.

Next, he spoke about Modi’s roadshows. He said, “He (Modi) came for roadshows in Chennai, right? Where did he go? To his favourite place, West Mambalam. Tell me why he went there.” At this point, the audience replied, “Ava (Brahmins) live there.”

In April 2024, at the height of the election campaigning, Maran called Modi’s roadshows “a circus.”

He claimed the local people covered up the Thiruvika Housing society where the poor lived so that Modi would not see it. He continued, “So what if he sees, even if our people are poor, we earn and have self-respect? We do not beg. Next, he went to Coimbatore for another roadshow, he went to all his favourite places. There is a joker, what is his name? “Aatukutty” (lamb) (referring to the derogatory name given to Annamalai by Dravidianists). He went there for the lamb’s sake. Both Chennai and Coimbatore got “naamam” (a derogatory representation of the Vaishnavite mark on the forehead connected to cheating.

It is noteworthy that when interviewed by journalists during the election campaign, Maran addressed TN BJP chief K Annamalai as a joker and pretended not to have heard of him.

Immediately, he jumped on the topic of Metro Rail. He said, “They did not give even a single rupee for the Metro Rail project. It has been in process for three years. You know what our CM said: I don’t care whether you give us the funds or not; we will take care of the Metro Rail project funds. The TN government has allocated funds in the budget for the Metro Rail, and the second phase is in progress.”

It is noteworthy that the state government has proposed the second phase of the Metro Rail project in Chennai. According to the proposal, the state has to bear the expenses, but the centre agreed to participate in the project. In 2021, the Centre announced a budget allocation of 63000 crores

Taking his tirade a step further, he said, “They feel pain only when it hurts them (avaal) but not when it hurts us. Tamilians have elephant-like memory. If anyone tries to avenge/cheat us like this, we will not forget it and teach you a lesson.”

He alleged that the central government was copying the schemes of the Dravidian government, especially the Skill Development Programme announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the budget for this year. He stated that Stalin had already implemented this through the “Naan Mudhalvan” Scheme, where 15 lakh students per year can upskill and find jobs. But he said the Union government is doing this for 20 lakh students. He said, “They are not interested in bringing any good schemes, just lip service.”

He also alleged that the central government copied the Thozhi women’s hostel programme. According to data from August 2021, when the Ministry of Women and Child Development released the first instalment to the State government of TN for the construction of a hostel building for working women with a daycare centre by the Tamil Nadu Working Women Hostel Corporation Limited (TNWWHCL) in Tambaram District, TN. The document states the central government sanctioned a non-recurring grant of ₹7,00,50,000 (seven crore fifty thousand) as the central government’s share for the construction. It further states that the grant for the construction of the hostel building represents 60% of the total approved cost of ₹11.67,50,000 (eleven crore sixty-seven lakh and fifty thousand rupees). The first instalment of this amount was a sum of ₹3,50,25,000 (three crores fifty lakh and 25 thousand rupees) (50% central govt share) for the construction of the building. The document also states that the Working Women Hostel is a sub-scheme of the Centrally Sponsored Umbrella Scheme “Mission for Protection & Empowerment for Women”. The central and state govt contribution has been calculated as a 60:40 ratio.

Once again, he went back to the topic of Thoothukudi floods. He said (in a disrespectful manner), “When the floods came, Nirmala Sitharaman came (vandhichu). She then went to a temple; she did not go anywhere else. What did she do there? She heard about a temple wall collapsing, and at that time, when a devotee went to put money in the hundial, she said not to put it there; it would go to the government. So put it in the aarti plate. See her twisted mind. Can I tell the people not to pay taxes because our money goes to Delhi? Won’t that be cheap? A Union Finance Minister behaves so cheaply. That is because the people have not elected her, so she does not understand the pain/suffering of the people.”

He then started praising CM Stalin for boycotting NITI Aayog. He claimed that Tamil Nadu was the best state in terms of profession, education, and poverty eradication and that the state also had the best CM.

Then he started focusing on caste and invoked EV Ramasamy, he said, “We ask you to educate everyone, the people there (North) do not study and come here for work. I am not demeaning anyone. No one is high or low based on their caste. But you are asking people to do their ancestral profession – Vishwakarma. Are you doing it? You all will study at IITs and become accomplished people, but you want cobblers, barbers, and farmers to continue their ancestral profession. You want us to be your slaves? No, we won’t. This is Periyar’s land, Anna’s land, Karunanidhi’s land, and Stalin’s land, here we will study, we will ask questions, and become the best citizens of the country. Only if TN is strong will India be strong. If you try to weaken us, we (states like TN) are your backbone, do not cheat us, avenge us, we are not ready to get cheated, but we will not shy away from giving a befitting reply.”

It is interesting that, unlike other Dravidianists, Maran did not speak in secessionist language, stating TN was not a part of India.

This is not the first time Dayanidhi Maran has spoken in such a fashion against Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Dayanidhi Maran has made very casteist jibes against Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. He used words like “Unga thopanaar” to indicate Sitharaman’s father (in a language/dialect used by Brahmins in TN) when speaking in Parliament in February 2024 about the central government aid to TN for the floods.

Earlier in 2023, he addressed Sitharaman as “Nirmala mami” during a “day-long” fast against NEET and then pretended to have said it inadvertently. The word Mami is used as a slur and in a derogatory fashion, especially by Dravidian ideologues when addressing Tamil Brahmin women in Tamil Nadu. It is noteworthy that Dayanidhi Maran is himself married to a Tamil Brahmin from The Hindu family, and his mother, wife of Murasoli Maran, the father of Dayanidhi Maran and nephew of M Karunanidhi was also a Tamil Brahmin woman.

The 18th Lok Sabha’s first session is scheduled to commence from 24 June 2024, and will run until 3 July 2024. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on 19 June 2024, that the Rajya Sabha session will start on 27 June 2024. He also urged all political parties to engage in constructive debates during the upcoming session.

Against this backdrop, Members of Parliament Dayanidhi Maran from Central Chennai, Thamizhachi Thangapandian from Chennai South, and Kalanidhi Veeraswamy from Chennai North visited George Antonysamy, the controversial Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore. Archbishop Antonysamy had recently been accused of attempting to influence voters using religious sentiments during the concluded Lok Sabha elections in 2024. The DMK MP’s faced criticism from the netizens.

During the recent 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a complaint was raised by the Legal Rights Protection Forum (LPRF) on 29 April 2024, to the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding the Tamilnadu Bishops’ Council and Archbishop of Mylapore – Madras Archdiocese, George Antonysamy, for allegedly propagating written propaganda through a community magazine to sway voters in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the ECI has acknowledged the complaint. Subsequently, the ECI has acknowledged the complaint and instructed the Chennai District Election Officer to address the issue of influencing voters along communal lines.

Archbishop George Antonysamy had penned an editorial titled “General Election 2024: Statement from Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council” in a recent edition of The New Leader magazine, invoking religious sentiments and employing fear-mongering tactics. In the editorial, Antonysamy openly criticized India’s elected central government (BJP) and its citizens. He had suggested that there was an attempt to construct India as a mono-cultural nation, denying its diversity. He had accused the Union Government of imposing the ideology of one religion, one language, and one culture, along with fascist ideologies.

Antonysamy had further stirred disharmony by alleging that Christians and Muslims were branded as anti-nationals and their fundamental rights were under attack. He had criticized the government for attempting to impose communal laws and curtail religious freedom. He had also expressed concerns about various issues including media control, neglect of southern states, attacks on state rights, and alleged government control over investigative bodies and courts. The editorial had concluded with a call to action urging Christians to vote to protect religious faith and human rights, rejecting sectarian parties, and aligning with non-religious, democratic forces.

The editorial’s tone and content had suggested a possible alignment with a political party, specifically the DMK, based on its language and echoed claims. Concerns had been raised about its attempt to influence voters based on religious lines, which could have violated the democratic process. Several organizations affiliated with the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore had been highlighted, indicating the need for a thorough investigation into potential violations of FEMA, PMLA, and FCRA regulations. Allegations had been made about the misuse of FCRA funds for purposes contrary to donor intentions, including political agendas.

Various organizations, including the Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF), had raised the issue with the Election Commission of India, urging decisive action against the Bishop’s Council and the Archdiocese of Mylapore-Madras. There had been demands for investigation and accountability for violating laws and misusing funds.

Every time the victim brings up Sivaji Krishnamurthy’s abusive rhetoric on the DMK stage, it was disregarded, further fueled by the backing of the DMK sympathizers. Despite his expulsion from the party and subsequent reinstatement for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he remained unapologetic. Until now, the reasons for his persistence were unclear, but it’s evident now that the DMK is wholeheartedly supporting and endorsing Sivaji Krishnamurthy, almost treating him like an influencer.

During a recent speech, Krishnamurthy displayed slight regret, acknowledging the scrutiny of “Periyavar” (Stalin) and the encouragement of “Chinnavar” (Udhayanidhi Stalin). However, DMK Member of Parliament Dayanidhi Maran praised Krishnamurthy for harshly criticizing opposition parties such as the AIADMK, BJP, etc., shamelessly endorsing and amplifying his provocative speeches as being widely admired by the public.

Recent Speech At Kalaignar 101st Birthday Celebration

Criticizing Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai, Sivaji provocatively challenged, “He said there won’t be a party called DMK after the elections. ‘Ada g*mala dei’, Do you have the mouth to say it, can you say it?”.

Later mocking former Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, Sivaji remarked, “Now a sister went to Andhra today; Amit Shah sent her with two slaps to her ears. Amit Shah has stated, ‘Be respectful, shut up and keep quiet, if you open your mouth here and there, I will cut and bury you.’ If you look at her face, it’s like that. Today, if you see my sister went to V-Care, straightened all her curly hair straightened and went stylish. This is why we say, isn’t there a saying or not, ‘Even if you call a dog and keep, where will it go? It will go to eat sh*t.” He further went on to say, “She (Tamilisai) holds the mic and says, brother asked before coming, sister asked in how many lakhs will you win? I said by one lakh. My brother has gone up… in jeep (double meaning) … brother has gone up, now two lakhs. Now tell me what should we keep in mouth?”

Then going on a rampage mode against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sivaji Krishnamurthy said, “Now if you say Modi ka means Chandrababu Naidu will put a banana in the mouth, if you open it again, Nitish Kumar will bring the item that is best from North and put it in (the mouth), if you open it more… who is he, Pawan Kalyan right, then there is another one in Maharashtra… Brother has just said two or three only… the epitome of treachery Eknath Shinde right, then Ajit Pawar and Ram Vilas Paswan have one child, If all these people take it and put it in (the mouth), Modi’s mouth will tear, henceforth there will be no Modi Ka Parivar, Modi Ka Guarantee. You should keep it wrapped up and roll up your tail.”

Responding to criticism from Anbumani Ramadoss, President of Pattali Makkal Katchi, who claimed that the DMK has nothing to do with social justice, Sivaji Krishnamurthy retorted, “Go and suck whoever you’ve joined with. Don’t ask us; did you join us?”

Derogatory Speech About Actor/Politician Couple Radhika And Sarath Kumar

On campaign speech endorsing DMK MP Candidate G Selvan from Kanchipuram, Sivaji Krishnamurthy said, “Who is he? Nirodh (Condom) …. Sorry! Sarath Kumar… Even if I go to Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, it will be exactly 1 or 2 O’clock, then I will go home and wake up my wife. She has to be woken up for something right. Don’t you need a reason to wake up your wife? This sister f*c*er has woken her half past two… this Sarath Kumar. She is sleepy, she has come and lie down after giving advertisement to nighties. At half past two, he calls ‘Radhika, Radhika’. Squinting her eyes, she asks what? If you have woken her up for something else, you are a man. Instead, he tells her ‘Modi is calling shall we go?’”

On campaign supporting incumbent DMK Central Chennai MP Dayanidhi Maran, Sivaji Krishnamurthy scorned and verbally attacked actor Sarath Kumar with his wife Radhika in an indecorous manner for merging his party with the BJP. Krishnamurthy said, “He wakes up the sleeping Radhika at two o’clock, ‘wake up Radhika, wake up, shall we go to Modi?’… What kind of survival is this? he says this on stage, ‘At half past two, I asked my wife and she said we can go with Modi, my wife and I came holding hands.”

Derogatory Speech About BJP Leader Khushbu

Addressing the audience at an event to commemorate the 100th birthday of Karunanidhi, Krishnamurthy began by expressing his disdain for Khusbhu Sundar, a former DMK member (and present BJP member) who had defected to another party. He admonished those aspiring to be actors, cautioning them against following in Khusbhu’s footsteps. “If one wants to pursue acting, they must not emulate Khusbhu. She is my old sister-in-law (pazheya Anni), now she is akin to an old vessel that has been refurbished for reuse”.

Derogatory Speech About Tamil Nadu Governor

In January 2023, DMK member Krishnamoorthy known for his crass speeches abused Governor Ravi and threatened to unleash terrorists to shoot and kill him. All this because the Governor did not read out the speech that he was given which led to the DMK insulting him by expunging his speech while he was on the floor of the assembly. He said, “CM is asking us not to scold the Governor. Had he read the speech properly, I would have placed flowers on his feet and thanked him with folded hands. But don’t I have the right to slap him with a slipper if he denies saying Ambedkar’s name? If you deny saying his name, you go to Kashmir. We’ll send a terrorist to shoot and kill you.

Krishnamoorthy berated the Governor’s decision to rescind the order dismissing Liquor Minister Senthil Balaji. He criticised Ravi’s response to a DMK petition requesting the reallocation of Senthil Balaji’s portfolios. Krishnamoorthy highlighted the Governor’s perceived flip-flop, stating, “You said it was wrong, you said you won’t accept. If you were born to your mother, you should have been strong about your stand, ng*tha, you changed it.

Derogatory Speech About BJP Leaders

In another DMK stage speech, Sivaji Krishnamurthy, made derogatory remarks on VP Duraisamy stating, “There is a person called VP Duraisamy, we welcomed him here with garland at Arivalayam and gave him sit a General Secretary post, but he goes there (to BJP), stands and says, Sir Sir to Annamalai, begging for a chance to speak. He goes to Karunagarajan and says, Sir, can I speak? He also goes away saying “poda *Beep*(mayire)”, VP Duraisamy is an example of what will happen if you leave the place where you have respect and go to the place where you have no respect, you will be beaten to death with chappals.” later called him “Poda Porambokku,” called BJP leader H Raja, “Echakalai“.

Derogatory Speech About AIADMK Leaders

Krishnamurthy used Tamil slurs like “Lavade Ka Baal,” “Baadu,” and “Pottai,” leveling numerous accusations against the ex-minister Jayakumar. Allegedly, Krishnamurthy claimed that a girl named Sindhu, who sought employment from Jayakumar, was made pregnant. Additionally, he asserted that in Palaverkaadu, Jayakumar is maintaining another girl named Sumithra, who has become a two-time councilor. Furthermore, he completed the narrative by stating that in Royapuram, a woman named Nagamma he concluded the matter under the guise of securing her councilor seat.

Regarding this, we may never determine which speech Chennai Central DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran was impressed with Sivaji Krishnamurthy referring to when he said, “it is so good and it is enjoyed by people from all walks of life.”
