K Armstrong, the Tamil Nadu state unit president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), was brutally murdered on the evening of 5 July 2024, near Perambur in Chennai. Armstrong was attacked by a gang of six assailants armed with machetes and sickles while chatting with friends and supporters near his residence.

Witnesses reported that the attackers threatened anyone who attempted to intervene, causing Armstrong’s friends to flee the scene. His family, upon hearing his cries, rushed to the site only to find him grievously wounded and lying in a pool of blood. Armstrong was quickly taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The assailants have been identified as V Ponnai Balu (39), K Manivannan (25), K Thiruvengatam (33), D Ramu (38), J Santhosh (22), S Thirumalai (45), G Arul (33), and D Selvaraj (48).

In the aftermath of the murder, a tweet by Varavanai Senthil, a self-identified journalist aligned with Dravidian ideology, and a card-carrying DMK supporter, added fuel to the fire by spreading misinformation. Senthil posted a picture with a caption suggesting that one of Armstrong’s killers, Selvaraj, was the BJP Mandal President (SC/ST Wing) in Thirunindravur.

To counter these claims, the state IT wing Vice President of the BJP Karthik Gopinath clarified via X that the picture of the suspect shared by DMK supporter Varavanai Senthil was no way connected to BJP.

“Thirunindravur BJP SC wing regional president Kutty alias Manikandan. This person named Selvaraj mentioned in the picture is not in any charge of the party. To hide their incompetence, the DMK thugs are spreading false news at will!“, he said.

Further clarification came from the BJP Mandal President (SC/ST Wing) of Thirunindravur, who released a video statement: “My name is Kutty (A) Manikandan. Thirunindravur BJP SC Wing Leader. Don’t believe DMK’s fake news!”

In a twist, it was revealed that one of the accused, Arul, who surrendered, is a DMK party member.

Photos have surfaced showing Arul honoring DMK leader and ex-minister Avadi Nasar.

The state IT wing Vice president of the BJP Karthik Gopinath tweeted along with the pictures of the accused Arul along with the DMK ex Minister Avadi Nasar exposing his link with DMK.

“DMK IT wing trying hard to establish a connect between every serious crime and BJP to hide their disastrous failure. But the truth is that most crimes are linked to DMK or its government’s misgovernance. Example: In the murder of BSP state president and Dalit leader Armstrong, the accused Arul who surrendered is a DMK party member. He is seen in pics honouring DMK ex minister Avadi Nasar.”, he said.

The Richa Chadda-starrer Hindi film Madam Chief Minister has been mired in many a controversies of late. One reason for the controversy is that the poster of the film depicts the film’s Dalit heroine Tara (played by Chadda) holding a broom. Several Dalit leaders have objected to this, and have said that the poster hurts the sentiments of the Dalit community by limiting their identity to a broom.

Another controversy attached to the movie is that the film is believed to be inspired by the life of Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) supremo and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. While the makers of the film have not substantiated this claim, they have also been criticised for not giving the lead role to a Dalit actress.

However, Bhim Sena chief Nawab Satpal Tanwar has gone one step ahead while raising his objections on the film.

He has announced that he will award an “Ambedkar Shield” made of gold worth ₹ 2 crores to anyone who cuts Richa Chadda’s tongue. In a Facebook Live session, he demanded that the film Madam Chief Minister be banned. He also alleged that the film engages in character assassination of the BSP leader by twisting her life-story and portraying her in a vulgar and indecent manner.

Tanwar also found the film’s dialogue “Main kunwaari hoon, tej kataari hoon, lekin tumhaari hoon” (“I am a virgin, I am a sharp dagger, but I am yours”) objectionable, saying that it insults the BSP chief. He warned the film’s makers that if the movie was released in cinema theatres, film posters would be torn and theatres would be burned. He also announced a reward to anyone who kidnaps the film’s director Subhash Kapoor and “leaves him naked on the road”. Further, Tanwar went on to threaten the actress’ life, saying that he would shoot her.

In response to these threats, Richa Chadda has tweeted “Hum nahi darte” (“I am not afraid”).

In yet another diatribe against Hindus, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) head Thol. Thirumavalavan speaking at an online seminar organized by Periyarist groups called Hindu women as prostitutes citing Manusmriti.

“If one were to look at how women are valued in Sanatana Dharma… how they are treated… how they are being suppressed for time immemorial… how they are being exploited… what does Sanatana Dharma say about women? Women are basically created as prostitutes by God. All women are prostitutes as per Hindu Dharma.. Manu Dharma.. All women are prostitutes. That is how they have been created by God. They are of lower status than men. This is applicable to Brahmin women as well as women of other castes. This is what the Sanatana Dharma says”. Thol. Thirumavalavan said.

It is to be remembered that Thirumavalavan recently performed the last rites of his sister as per the Santana Dharma traditions by performing homam in the presence of a Hindu priest and chanting of hymns.

Following this many on Twitter called out the leader for his abusive comments on women citing a text that is not even relevant to present times.

The hashtag #திருட்டுப்பயதிருமாவளவன் (Thirumavalavan the thief) started trending nationwide with many digging out his association with Islam and Christianity.

This is not the first time Thirumavalavan has been spewing venom against Hindu religion. Earlier he was booked for hurting religious sentiments when he made a comment on temples. He had said “if a structure built like a dome it is a Mosque, if there is a tall tower like structure it is a Church, if there are ugly figurines it is a Hindu temple”.

He had also called for the demolition of all Sivan and Vishnu temples and building Buddhist vihars.
