Archaeologists have discovered a terracotta statue dating to the Chola period during an exploration along the banks of the Thenpennai River near Kavanur village, close to Panruti, in Cuddalore district.

The find was made during a surface-level archaeological exploration conducted in the riverbed area. Archaeologist Emmanuel, who documented the discovery, said the sculpture clearly reflects the stylistic and iconographic features associated with Chola-era craftsmanship.

The terracotta statue represents Durga, identified specifically as Vishnu Durga, and measures approximately 19.5 centimetres in height and 15 centimetres in width. According to Emmanuel, the sculpture displays a smiling facial expression and is adorned with a karandamagudam (tiered crown), kundalam earrings, and a sarapali necklace. The figure also features shoulder bangles and three bangles on each arm.

The deity is depicted with four hands. The upper right hand holds a chakra (discus), while the lower right arm is broken. The left hands hold a shankha (conch) and rest on the hip in a katthihastha posture. The statue also shows detailed half-saree drapery and a singhamukham (lion-face) motif at the waist, elements commonly seen in Chola-period religious terracottas.

However, portions of the sculpture have suffered damage over time. The legs, the lower right arm, and parts of the right side of the statue are broken, likely due to prolonged exposure and natural erosion in the river environment.

Despite the damage, archaeologists say the stylistic detailing, ornamentation, and iconographic elements firmly place the sculpture within the Chola period, highlighting the refined artistic traditions of the era. The discovery adds to the growing body of archaeological evidence pointing to active religious and cultural centres along the Thenpennai River basin during the Chola dynasty.

Further documentation and conservation measures are expected to be undertaken to study the statue in greater detail and assess its historical context within the region.

A 35-year-old farmer from Mangalore village near Vepur in Cuddalore died on Wednesday, 29 October 2025, after being bitten by a poisonous snake and failing to receive timely medical treatment due to the absence of doctors at a local government health centre.

The victim, identified as Senthilkumar, was working in his field when the incident occurred. Locals rushed him to the Government Upgraded Primary Health Centre in the village for immediate care. However, according to residents, there were no doctors available at the facility for nearly three hours, during which no treatment or first aid was provided.

Senthilkumar’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and he died before any medical help arrived. His death sparked outrage among villagers and relatives, who accused health authorities of negligence.

In protest, villagers gathered outside the primary health centre, blocked the nearby road, and reportedly broke the hospital’s doors during a heated confrontation with staff. The situation caused tension in the area until police arrived to disperse the crowd and restore order.

Residents demanded that adequate medical staff be posted at the centre and called for accountability over what they described as a preventable death caused by administrative apathy. Local authorities are investigating the incident.

A Panchayat Union Middle School located in Adhivaraganatham near Bhuvanagiri, in the Cuddalore district, was the site of a food safety scare earlier today. The school, which has over 120 students, was serving breakfast as part of the government’s morning meal scheme when a student reportedly discovered a lizard in the food.

Around 18 students had already consumed the meal before the contamination was noticed. Although no immediate health issues were reported among the children, the school authorities promptly called in medical staff from Bhuvanagiri Government Hospital as a precaution. The students were given initial treatment on-site.

Upon hearing of the incident, concerned parents rushed to the school, leading to a tense exchange with the teaching staff. The situation caused considerable commotion in the area. As a further safety measure, the 18 affected students were transported by ambulance to Chidambaram Government Hospital for observation. All students are reported to be in stable condition.

Repeated Midday Meal Incidents Raise Serious Safety Concerns Across Tamil Nadu

The recent incident is not an isolated case, over the past few years, similar food contamination incidents have been reported across various districts in Tamil Nadu raising alarming questions about the quality control, hygiene practices, and oversight in the state’s school meal schemes.

Despite repeated occurrences, little seems to have been done to prevent these avoidable mishaps.

Timeline of Incidents

#1 24 June 2025: over 50 students at Anaivari Panchayat Union Primary School reportedly fell ill after consuming breakfast suspected to have contained a lizard in Villupuram district. Several students fainted and vomited shortly after eating and were rushed to Kalpattu Government Primary Health Centre. Two temporary kitchen staff were dismissed, and the School Education Department launched an investigation.

#2 July 2025: In a government-run hostel linked to the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School in the Courtallam area, nine female students fell ill after breakfast and were admitted to Tenkasi Government Hospital. The hostel is reportedly managed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.

#3 13 August 2025: Eight students were hospitalized after a lizard was allegedly discovered in their breakfast of rava khichdi provided under the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme at Punairuppu Government Primary School in Thiruvarur district.

#4 10 September 2022: In Tiruvannamalai district’s, Mothakal village, 47 students were hospitalized after eating contaminated midday meals that reportedly contained dead lizards.

#5 31 May 2022: In Pudukottai District, three children suffered from vomiting and diarrhea at the Thondaiman Nagar Anganwadi. Food served to 50 children was later found to contain beetles and worms. All children were treated at Pudukottai Government Hospital.

#6 29 October 2022: In Tiruvannamalai district, at a school near Keezhpennathur, 15 students were hospitalized after a lizard’s head was reportedly found in the food consumed by a class 10 student. Over 150 students were enrolled in the school at the time.

Despite these recurring health hazards some involving contaminated food, others undercooked or poorly stored items systemic reforms remain elusive. While temporary suspensions of staff and inquiries are frequently announced, no lasting structural changes have been implemented to ensure food safety in school and hostel kitchens.

Critics argue that the lack of accountability, poor quality control, and insufficient health inspections continue to put thousands of students at risk across Tamil Nadu.

In a shocking case from Cuddalore district, a councillor of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), an ally of the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu, was arrested for allegedly attacking a government employee inside the Bhuvanagiri Town Panchayat office. The incident, captured on CCTV, shows the councillor storming into the office and assaulting the staff member, with the footage quickly going viral and sparking public outrage.

According to reports, the incident occurred on 7 August when councillor Bharathidasan, also known as Kalimuthu, entered the panchayat office and insisted that a bill be issued to a contractor for works completed in his ward. The employee, Radhakrishnan, who was engaged in other official duties, requested time until evening to process the request. This reportedly led to a heated exchange, during which the councillor allegedly hurled verbal abuse, issued death threats, and punched the staffer in the face.

A senior police official confirmed the arrest, stating, “We have immediately arrested the VCK functionary on the basis of the government official’s complaint. There was an issue over payments. Investigation is on.”

The CCTV footage clearly depicts Bharathidasan physically assaulting Radhakrishnan, followed by a scuffle in which both men exchange blows. The attack has since triggered a political storm, with former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai posting the video on X and condemning the DMK-led government.

He wrote, “When public servants are attacked in their office, it is not just a breakdown of governance; it is a breakdown of trust in the very system meant to protect the people. In a shocking incident from Bhuvanagiri, a public servant was verbally abused and physically assaulted by a VCK Councillor, a member of the DMK Alliance. Threats of further attacks also followed this attack. This isn’t just an isolated act of lawlessness in the last 4 years in TN; it is a reflection of a political culture perpetrated by DMK that has normalised intimidation, violence, and absolute disregard for public institutions.

Following the assault, Radhakrishnan, who suffered facial injuries, was taken to Bhuvanagiri Taluk Hospital and later referred to Chidambaram Medical College Hospital. Kalimuthu also claimed that he was assaulted and received treatment at the same hospital before being taken into custody.

The VCK has not issued any public statement on the matter. Police have seized the CCTV footage and are continuing their investigation.

Tensions flared at the Mangalampettai (Mangalampet) sub-registrar’s office when a group of villagers protested, alleging that local land had been wrongly claimed as Waqf property and refusing to allow its registration.

The issue came to light when over a hundred residents from M. Akaram village, located near Mangalampet, in Virudhachalam assembled outside the sub-registrar’s office around 11:00 a.m. The protest, organized under the banner of the Hindu Munnani, was sparked by a land transaction involving Poomalai, son of M. Akaram resident Periyasamy, who attempted to register a land donation in his son Karthikeyan’s name. Officials refused to process the registration, citing the land as belonging to the Waqf Board.

In response, the villagers led by Hindu Munnani functionary Velmurugan, BJP union leader Paramasivam, and coordinator Kamalakannan demanded that the land be rightfully registered to the family. The group staged a sit-in protest at the office.

Authorities, including Mangalampet Inspector Parthasarathy and District Registrar Mahalakshmi, arrived at the scene to mediate. After discussions, the protest was called off and the crowd dispersed peacefully. The incident caused significant commotion in the area for a time.

Recent Instances Of Waqf Land Grabs

Kattukollai, Vellore

In April 2025, tensions flared in Kattukollai village of Tamil Nadu’s Vellore district after nearly 150 families received notices declaring their land as Waqf property, triggering protests and appeals to district authorities.

The notice, reportedly issued by an individual named Syed Ali Sultan Shah, claimed the land belonged to a local dargah and instructed villagers to either vacate the property or begin paying tax to the religious institution.

Thiruchendurai, Trichy

In September 2022, a rude shock awakened the villagers of Thiruchendurai in Thiruchirapalli District of Tamil Nadu. It had come to light that their entire hamlet which also consisted of a 1500-year-old Shiva temple had been declared as the property of the Waqf Board in Tamil Nadu.

Thiruparankundram, Madurai

Indian Union Muslim League member and Ramanathapuram MP Navas Kani, who also serves as the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board chairman, has claimed that the dargah at the Thirupparankundram Temple hill is Waqf property.

Peyazhwar Temple, Chennai

Tamil Nadu Waqf Board President Abdul Rahman announced that many Hindu temples are present on Waqf properties, including the 1000-years-old Peyazhwar Temple, on land allegedly owned by the Kutchery Road Mosque.

Balasamudram, Dindigul

In a striking parallel to the Thiruchendurai village land dispute, another property conflict involving the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board has come to light, this time in the Balasamudram Municipality of Dindigul district. With claims dating back to 2020, the Waqf Board asserts ownership over the entire municipality, leaving around 10,000 residents in limbo. Unable to sell their ancestral properties due to unresolved legalities, the community’s frustration culminated in a petition to local authorities in May 2023.

The taste of victory is all the sweeter because of the relentless struggle that preceded it. And this is true in the case of AV Ayyappan. Hailing from a small village in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, Ayyappan has emerged as a shining example of perseverance. After 14 failed attempts, he was finally recommended on his 15th attempt for the Indian Navy. His story is one of self-discovery, discipline, and unshakable determination.

Ayyappan, tell us a little about yourself and how your defence journey began.

Ayyappan: I’m from Cuddalore. My parents were schoolteachers and are now full-time farmers. While in college, I was part of the NCC, which really laid the foundation for my interest in the armed forces. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I helped organize the Swarnim Vijay Run, a marathon commemorating the 50th anniversary of India’s victory in the 1971 war. That event gave me a glimpse into military discipline, leadership, and motivation. After that, I was certain that I wanted to join the armed forces. I attempted the SSB interviews but faced multiple failures: 2 screen outs and then 12 conference outs. Finally, in my 15th attempt at Bhopal, I was recommended for the Indian Navy.

Q: Fourteen missed attempts is no small number. How did you stay motivated through it all?

Ayyappan: It wasn’t easy. Initially, I prepared with friends, we discussed strategies and tried to reflect them in our responses. But I realised I wasn’t showing my true self. I was imitating. After repeated failures, I sat down and created a flowchart of my achievements and experiences. That helped me understand myself better. Once I started projecting my authentic personality in the SSB, I saw results.

Q: What should engineering students keep in mind when applying for defence services?

Ayyappan: Engineering students can apply in their final year via the official portals — joinindianarmy, joinindiannavy, etc. Once shortlisted based on marks, they’re called for the SSB interview, which has two stages:

  • Stage 1:
    • OIR (Officers Intelligence Rating) test
    • PPDT (Picture Perception and Discussion Test) – candidates view a picture, create a story, and then discuss it in a group.

Out of 200–300 candidates, only 20-30 are usually shortlisted to proceed.

  • Stage 2:
    • Psychological Tests
    • GTO (Group Tasks) to assess leadership and teamwork
    • Personal Interview

Sometimes no one is selected from a batch. Even among those who pass, some get medically unfit or merit out.

Q: You were once declared medically unfit. Can you talk about that?

Ayyappan: Yes, I was declared medically unfit for two reasons: bowlegs and overweight. I worked on my weight and got fit. For the bowlegs, after review, it was found to be muscle build-up from running, not an actual deformity. I appealed and was cleared.

Q: Did you ever feel like giving up?

Ayyappan: Honestly, no. I always believed I would be recommended. My NCC commanding officer and others had faith in me, and I held onto that. I gave myself a time frame – until I completed my ME. Even if I didn’t succeed then, I would have continued to try while taking up a job.

Q: What kind of support did you receive from your friends and family?

Ayyappan: My friends, mostly NCC cadets, knew how tough the process was. They watched me grow. I was weak in English earlier, but by the end, I could speak confidently and dress well. They appreciated that even though I wasn’t getting recommended, I was improving in life.

At home, my parents were extremely supportive. We had never seen even a jawan in uniform in our village, but they never discouraged me. After every failure, they stood by me.

Q: How did your association with Dream of Defence help you?

Ayyappan: Before joining Dream of Defence, I didn’t know what SSB was. The daily online sessions, the feedback from you and Col Swamy, were game changers. You pointed out my weaknesses in communication and soft skills – I worked on those areas, and it helped immensely.

Q: Tell us about Dream of Defence group.

Ayyappan: The Dream of Defence comprises Major Madhan Kumar, Lt Commander Thiagarajan, and Colonel Swamy – retired army officers who have been guiding the defence aspirants for about 5 years now. It was this group and the guidance of the core members – the veterans that helped quite a few of us participants achieve success – realise our dream of entering the armed forces.
Initially, we were a group of students who began preparing for the exams. Two of them have already become officers (Captain Thirukumaran and Lt Agnivesh) and now me – I am following their footsteps now to become an officer soon. We prepared for the exams together.

Today there are over 100 members in the group comprising of mentors and aspirants.

Q: How did Major Madhan’s guidance impact you?

Ayyappan: I began interacting with Major Madhan after we met while organizing a marathon (as mentioned earlier). I had near-zero idea about the defence related exams and no specific idea about the armed forces to be honest. He helped me with how to begin my preparations and how to go about it. He even helped me analyze my weaknesses – communication was my weak point and guided me to get over it by pointing me to resources and mentors. Every time we discussed my performance, he would analyse everything and tell me how to correct it. He also introduced me to Lt Cdr Thiagarajan, and he conducted many SSB sessions initially. Over time, Col Swamy started guiding us and he is guiding the aspirants now. He is a great mentor.

With Major Madhan Kumar

Q: You’ve been selected for the Navy. What is your branch and role?

Ayyappan: I’ve been selected for the Naval Armament Inspection Cadre (NAIC). The role involves quality assurance, safety inspection, and auditing of naval weapons. With the Navy’s focus on indigenization, NAIC also contributes to R&D and weapon warehouse management.

Q: Was the Navy your first choice?

Ayyappan: Actually, my dream was to join the Indian Army, especially the Special Forces. I was drawn to their combat role and leadership. But I’m honoured to serve the nation in the Navy too, and I will give it my all.

Q: You’re coaching others now, many of whom don’t know English or Hindi. What advice do you give them?

Ayyappan:

  1. Confidence is key – Never underestimate yourself.
  2. English is important, especially in a multilingual nation like India.
  3. Stay aware of your environment, yourself, and keep up with current affairs.

Q: How many hours should aspirants study per day for CDS exams?

Ayyappan: The CDS exam is as competitive as the UPSC prelims now. Aspirants should study for at least 4 hours a day, focusing on the syllabus and previous years’ question trends. Coaching isn’t mandatory, but guidance is crucial, past candidates and online resources help a lot.

Q: You’ve come a long way from being shy and hesitant in English. How did you overcome that?

Ayyappan: I practiced speaking to myself. I’d stand in front of the mirror and pretend to be a newsreader. I recorded myself, listened back, and improved slowly. I made grammar mistakes, but the confidence I built was more important than perfection.

Q: How important is physical fitness in SSB? How did you prepare?

Ayyappan: Physical fitness is essential. In the SSB, there are both individual and group obstacle tasks. I didn’t do any special training — just ran 3 km daily, did pushups, pull-ups, sit-ups — the basics. That was enough.

Q: How did your family react to the final recommendation?

Ayyappan: My parents and younger brother were overjoyed. For all of us, it was a long wait and an emotional moment.

Q: What’s your next goal?

Ayyappan: My next goal is to convert my Short Service Commission (SSC) to a Permanent Commission. I want to excel in my training and clear all requirements in the first attempt.

Ayyappan’s journey proves that with clarity, consistency, and courage, no dream is too far. From a village boy unsure of his English to a confident young officer headed to the Navy, his story continues to inspire defence aspirants across the country.

On 25 June 2025, the Madras High Court issued contempt notices to five senior IAS officers and two officials from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department for not complying with a 2024 court order concerning the relocation of a school operating on temple-owned land in Cuddalore district.

The order stems from a contempt petition filed by BJP functionary S. Vinoth Raghavendran, who serves as the State Secretary for the party’s Spiritual and Temple Development Wing. He alleged that despite a High Court directive more than a year ago, authorities have failed to move the St. Joseph Matriculation Higher Secondary School, which has been situated on land belonging to the Devanathaswamy Temple in Thiruvanthipuram, Cuddalore District for over five years.

A division bench consisting of Justice K.R. Sriram and Justice Sunder Mohan directed the following officials to appear before the court on 10 July 2025:

  1. P. Amudha, Secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management
  2. S. Madhumathi, Secretary, School Education
  3. Dr. B. Chandramohan, Secretary, Tourism, Culture, and HR&CE
  4. P.N. Sridhar, Commissioner, HR&CE
  5. Sibi Adithia Senthilkumar, Collector, Cuddalore
  6. Two unnamed Joint Commissioners from the HR&CE Department

According to the petition, although the court had, in April 2024, given the state a six-month extension to identify alternative land for the school to ensure minimal disruption to students, no meaningful action was taken. The petitioner emphasized that the land in question is reserved for religious purposes and must be preserved as part of the temple’s heritage.

The court criticized the continued inaction and delay by the state machinery, noting that the matter had been dragging on for more than five years. The issuance of contempt notices and the call for personal appearance underline the court’s seriousness in holding government officials accountable.

The upcoming hearing on 10 July is expected to be pivotal, as it may lead to further legal repercussions for the officials involved if the court finds continued non-compliance with its directive.

A video recently surfaced from the Panruti Government Primary Health Center in Cuddalore district, showing a heated exchange between a government doctor and the parent of a young patient. The doctor, who was on duty at the time, is seen speaking in a hostile tone and allegedly threatening to file a police case against the parent who was seeking answers regarding his child’s treatment.

According to reports, a fourth-grade student had received an injection at the health center after sustaining injuries from a fall. However, when the injection site later became swollen and infected, the child’s parents returned to the hospital to raise concerns. When they questioned the doctor about the reaction, she reportedly refused to provide a proper explanation and instead responded with threats, asserting that she could file a case and that the parent had no power to act against her.

The parent/relative of the child, who was recording the interaction, asked, “Madam, you can file a complaint. My child isn’t well, and I’m here to ask you a question because they’ve given injection and tablet in your hospital. If you ask, how can they put without asking me then how are you allow this in your hospital? We’ve been waiting for an hour. You arrive at 10 AM, and my child, who has school, has been waiting since 9 AM.”

In response, the doctor is heard saying in a dismissive tone, “There are doctors here spending two hours in the OT all with political influence and leave so just shut up and be quiet.”

The situation escalated further as the parent objected to the tone, saying, “you don’t need to use words like ‘shut up’ and ‘be quiet.’ Do you understand what you’re saying? A child waits to see you, and then you ask if we have any sense? You tell us to go complain wherever we want, and to anyone we want. Is this how you talk?”

The doctor allegedly replied, “There’s no need to talk to you. We can file a case for work obstruction under IPC.”

Undeterred, the parent responded, “Go ahead and file one against me. I’m standing here with your first token. What are you talking about? You’re using vulgar words. You tell me to sit in a chair, and see? Is this what you say in a hospital?”

The doctor then said, “You come and try working here.”

To which the parent replied, “Isn’t that why you’re here? You’re using disrespectful language, and talking rudely?”

The exchange ended with the doctor reportedly cursing the family saying, “You can create this kind of scene and post videos wherever you want, but God will take his course.”

The video has since drawn public criticism online, with many users calling for accountability and better patient care standards in government hospitals. Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.

A horrific incident of rape involving an 80-year-old woman near Panruti in Cuddalore district in Dravidian Model Tamil Nadu under the DMK has shocked the citizens. Kausalya, a resident of Thirasu village near Panruti, used to walk along Pulavanur Road every morning and evening for work.

While Kausalya was walking as usual, some young men sitting drunk by the side of the road allegedly dragged the elderly woman into a grove of bushes. According to reports, they put soil into her mouth to keep her quiet and then committed rape. They also grabbed the jewellery — 4 grams (earrings) and 2 grams (nosepin) — that the victim was wearing before fleeing the scene.

Hearing the victim’s screams, members of the public rushed to her aid and admitted her to Cuddalore Government Medical College Hospital. The elderly woman is currently in critical condition and receiving treatment.

Police, who have registered a case in connection with the incident, are currently searching for the suspects, who are absconding. The incident is said to have taken place at 4:00 p.m. when the victim went to a nearby grove to relieve herself.

An investigation by Panruti Police revealed that four men, aged between 35 and 40, allegedly committed the rape while in a drunken state. Forensic experts have collected evidence, and a sniffer dog was called in to aid the investigation. The incident has caused fear in the community.

Sexual Assault & Murder Of 80-Year-Old Woman By Teenager In Ranipet

Just over a week ago, a similar incident happened in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu, when a 19-year-old youth sexually assaulted and murdered an 80-year-old woman in a village under the Arcot taluk of Ranipet district.

The accused, identified as S Nandakumar from Kathiyavadi village, reportedly entered the elderly woman’s residence in an intoxicated state around 5:30 PM on 3 June 2025. According to preliminary police investigations, the woman, who owned and operated a brick kiln in her mango grove, lived in a small house on the premises with her son, granddaughter, and great-grandchildren.

A case was registered under Sections 64(1) (rape) and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigators discovered that Nandakumar had been working as an electrician in the area for the past three years. During his visits, he became familiar with the woman’s residence and had been observed loitering nearby frequently.

To trace the accused, authorities reviewed CCTV footage from the area, including busy roads and key junctions. After cross-checking the suspect’s image with local residents, police were able to identify his native village. He was eventually located and apprehended near a hillock on 4th June evening. Nandakumar was formally arrested, and further investigation is ongoing.
