In a shocking and outrageous move, the left parties—CPI(M), CPI, CPI (ML), and VCK—on 26 May 2025 shamelessly condemned the killing of Maoists in Chhattisgarh, calling it a fake encounter and have announced a joint protest in Chennai on 2 June 2025, backing clearly the extremist violence instead of condemning it.

In their joint statement, signed by CPM state secretary P. Shanmugam, CPI state secretary R. Mutharasan, CPI (ML) state secretary P. Aasai thambi, and VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan, they baselessly accused the central government and the BJP-led Chhattisgarh administration of “violent operations” disguised as anti-Naxal campaigns. They dubbed the anti-Maoist operation as “27 people killed” on May 22, deliberately ignoring the brutal violence and fear these armed extremists unleashed in the jungles.

Through a official X statement, CPM’s Shanmugam stated, “Joint Statement by CPI(M), CPI, VCK, CPI(ML) Liberation: 26.05.2025 Stop the fake encounter killings of Maoists – Order a judicial inquiry! On 2 June, a protest demonstration will be held in Chennai behalf of CPI(M), CPI, VCK, and CPI(ML) Liberation parties!!

The Union government and the BJP-led Chhattisgarh state government are carrying out intense armed operations to eliminate Maoists under the guise of anti-Naxal measures. On the 22nd, 27 people were brutally killed in one day alone. It is highly condemnable, even after the Maoists expressed their willingness to hold talks with the government, the Union and state governments have intensified their extermination operations. This is a blatant abuse of power aimed at completely suppressing the tribal people who are fighting against the wholesale handover of forest, natural, and mineral resources to corporate and foreign companies, as well as those who support their struggles.

Likewise, when the tribal communities fight for their right to live and forest rights, they do not accept Maoists acting as their protectors in the deep forest regions. We completely reject the Maoists’ methods, unacceptable ideologies, and practices. But we cannot allow the terrorist act of eliminating everyone who holds a differing opinion. Such actions cannot be the hallmark of a civilized, democratic government. What remains there is nothing but barbarism. We strongly condemn the repressive operations unleashed by BJP governments in Chhattisgarh.

We urge the Union and Chhattisgarh state governments to immediately stop the extermination operations against the Maoists and instead initiate talks to reach a political solution. More importantly, the Union and Chhattisgarh governments must immediately stop handing over the rich resources of the hills to private entities. The CPI(M), CPI, VKC, and CPI(ML) Liberation parties have decided to hold a joint protest in Chennai on Monday, 2 June 2025, demanding a full judicial inquiry into the fake clashes that have taken place so far, among other demands. We call upon all democratic forces to participate in this just protest against state terrorism, in support of democracy, and in defense of the rights of tribal communities, and to extend their full solidarity.”

In a landmark religious ceremony held on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, Rig Vedic scholar Duddu Satya Venkata Surya Subramanya Ganesha Sharma Dravid from Annavaram, Andhra Pradesh, was formally anointed as the 71st Shankaracharya of the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham on 30 April 2025. Upon initiation into sanyasa, he was conferred the monastic title Satya Chandrashekarendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya.

The ceremony was held in Kanchipuram at the Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple and associated shrines of the Kanchi Mutt, attended by spiritual leaders, scholars, and devotees from across the country. The event coincided with the 2534th birth anniversary celebrations of Adi Shankaracharya, the revered philosopher-saint credited with establishing the Peetham in 482 BCE.

However, Dravidianists and DMK allies could not keep their mouth shut on this momentous occasion and had to just run their mouths. Some uninformed Dravidianists questioned why a junior pontiff was anointed when the senior seer was very much alive – they seemed to follow Vatican traditions to sound so unaware of their Hindu leaders and the rituals involved.

Among those who derogated the Shankaracharya were DMK Ally, Communist leader Arunan. In a post on his X handle, he wrote, “Advaitis, who say that the world is illusion, worship a human being like a god!”

People like Arunan do not understand Hinduism, its rituals, or the concept of Advaita.

A guru is considered God to all Hindus, we even have the saying – Mata Pita Guru Deivam – where the Guru comes before God Himself.

Additionally, if one were to look from an Advaitic perspective, Arunan has hit a self-goal. In Advaita, the philosophy believes in non-duality and the oneness of reality – that there is God within everyone, every being on this planet. Going by this, the junior seer is only worshipping the God within His Guru and His Guru as God Himself – perfectly adhering to Advaita philosophy.

India’s food inflation is likely to ease while the growth outlook for the economy is “cautiously optimistic” for the coming months as the agricultural sector is likely to benefit from favourable monsoon conditions, increased minimum support prices and adequate supply of inputs, according to the Finance Ministry’s monthly economic review released on Monday.

India’s retail inflation jumped in October 6.21 per cent, a 14-month high, driven by elevated food inflation in a few vegetables. Supply disruptions from heavy rains in major producing states contributed to price pressures on tomatoes, onions, and potatoes.

However, the bright agricultural production prospects make the inflation outlook benign, despite existing price pressures on select food items. Early November trends signalled moderation in key food prices, though geopolitical factors may continue to impact domestic inflation and supply chains, the report states.

Amid a clouded global background, and after a brief period of softening momentum over the monsoon months, many high-frequency indicators of economic activity in India have shown a rebound in October. These include indicators of rural and urban demand and supply side variables like Purchasing Managers’ Index and E-way bill generation, the report states.

On the employment front, the formal workforce is expanding, with notable increases in manufacturing jobs and a strong inflow of youth into organised sectors, it added. As far as the external sector is concerned, the report states that India’s export recovery may encounter challenges due to softening demand in developed markets.

However, trade in the services sector is sustaining momentum. Apart from the emerging indications of domestic growth and stability, the dynamics of global interest rates, earning growth and valuation, geopolitical developments and policy decisions of the next administration in the US will determine the course of trade and capital flows.

Recent developments in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine have caused some concern in financial markets with safe-haven assets such as US Treasuries and gold finding a bid. Geopolitical conditions remain fragile, it added.

In a significant development, 22 individuals, including Thalli MLA Ramachandran, appeared in the Salem District Principal Court on Monday in connection with the 2012 murder case of Palani alias Palaniswami, an administrator for Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam (TPDK) from Krishnagiri district.

Palani, who served as a Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam organizer for the Communist Party of India (CPI) in Krishnagiri district, was reportedly shot and later beheaded by a man identified as Kumba Lal.

Following the incident, the Uthanapalli police registered a case, leading to the arrests of 26 individuals, including MLA Ramachandran, his brother R Varadarajan, and his father-in-law, L Maiya.

The case was initially set for trial in the Krishnagiri District Sessions Court. However, Palani’s family petitioned the Supreme Court for a transfer, alleging witness intimidation in Krishnagiri. The Supreme Court subsequently ordered that the trial be moved to the Salem District Principal Court.

The trial for Palani assassination commenced in Salem yesterday, with MLA Ramachandran and 21 others appearing before Principal District Judge Sumathi. Four of the original accused have reportedly passed away. Palani’s son, Vanchinathan, provided testimony during the session.

Judge Sumathi adjourned the hearing to 21 November 2024, allowing for further proceedings in the case.

In Kerala’s Ernakulam district, 400 Christian and 200 Hindu families are battling to keep their ancestral homes as the Waqf Board asserts ownership over land that their communities have occupied for generations. The properties in question lie in the coastal regions of Munambam and Cherai, areas historically inhabited by the Latin Catholic fishing community. The dispute, centered around the legal status of the land, has revived decades-old tensions and brought significant distress to the residents.

The controversy began with a petition claiming that the homes stand on Waqf property, initially gifted in 1950 by a wealthy Muslim benefactor named Muhammed Siddhique Sait. The 404-acre land parcel was donated to Farook College in Kozhikode with the stipulation that any income generated from it would serve educational purposes. The land has since changed hands many times, with numerous transactions occurring over the decades. The families had been under the impression that their land ownership was legitimate and recognized by the courts since the Kerala High Court granted legal possession to Farook College in 1975.

In 2008, a renewed dispute emerged when the Justice Nissar Commission, appointed to investigate alleged mismanagement of Waqf properties, identified the land as Waqf property. However, residents assert they were not consulted, and they were unaware of the commission’s findings until the land was officially listed as Waqf property in 2019. When residents attempted to pay their property taxes in 2022, they were informed that the land was considered Waqf property, leading to shock and renewed protests. Many found themselves unable to conduct transactions such as taking loans due to legal uncertainties.

Despite a court intervention allowing residents to pay taxes, the Waqf Board listed the residents asencroachers, aggravating the situation. The issue gained widespread attention when Major Archbishop Andrews Thazhath of the Syro-Malabar Church and the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) sent letters to the Joint Secretary of the Lok Sabha Secretariat. They appealed for an amendment to the Waqf Act of 1995, calling the Waqf Board’s claims unjust and unconstitutional. The KCBC insisted that the law should be amended to protect these families from displacement.

Pinarayi Govt Passes Resolution Opposing Waqf Amendment Bill

In a parallel development, the Kerala Legislative Assembly, on 14 October 2024, unanimously passed a resolution urging the Union government to withdraw the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024. The resolution argued that the bill undermines secular principles and threatens the democratic values enshrined in the federal structure of the Constitution. It contended that the proposed amendments would weaken the authority of state Waqf Boards and infringe on state rights by replacing elected members with a board of nominated officials.

Critics argue that the state government is diverting attention from the plight of the affected families by opposing the bill. This move is seen as a political strategy aimed at securing minority votes, rather than addressing the genuine concerns of those at risk of displacement. Observers point out that the assembly’s resolution fails to acknowledge the hardships faced by residents, some of whom trace their lineage in Munambam back over a century.

The Waqf dispute is not limited to Cherai and Munambam, as similar cases of Waqf claims over properties have been reported across India. Without intervention, families who have held land for generations could face eviction. As the affected families continue their legal struggle to retain their ancestral land, questions about the fairness and enforcement of the Waqf Act remain a source of controversy and legal complexity in the region.

TNM Upset With Hindu Groups Standing In Solidarity With Christian Families

As the Christian families in Munambam, Kerala, continue their struggle against the Waqf Board’s claims on their ancestral land, The News Minute (TNM) seems more concerned with Hindu groups lending support to these distressed communities than addressing the genuine land rights issue. TNM’s coverage repeatedly emphasizes the presence of right-wing Hindu groups, like BJP-affiliated organizations, framing their involvement as an opportunistic attempt to exploit religious divisions, while glossing over the real fears and struggles of families at risk of losing their homes.

Instead of focusing on the alarming situation, TNM appears to be more troubled by the involvement of groups such as the BJP’s Minority Morcha and Yuva Morcha, which have openly supported the residents. By portraying this support as a calculated move to sway the Christian community towards the Sangh Parivar’s agenda, TNM diminishes the fact that many families have found allies in these groups during a time of need.

The presence of Hindu groups at the protests and their backing for the residents’ demands for Waqf law amendments is characterized by TNM as a communal ploy. Yet, the residents themselves have welcomed anyone who stands by them in their fight for justice, with some openly stating they will support those who help, regardless of their traditional political affiliations. The arrival of these groups is simply a response to a dire situation where the affected families, predominantly Christians, have felt ignored by the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and other political entities that have failed to address their plight meaningfully.

TNM’s narrative seems to accuse the Hindu groups of attempting to frame the dispute as a conflict between Christians and Muslims while dismissing the legitimate concerns that the Waqf laws pose a threat to the rights of non-Muslim communities. Critics argue that this seems intent on shielding the state government and other political forces from accountability for their failure to protect the rights of the affected families.

Additionally, the news outlet’s criticism extends to the online campaigns led by Christian organizations like the Christian Association & Alliance for Social Action (CASA), which have been vocal about the need to amend Waqf laws. Instead of recognizing CASA’s efforts to advocate for the residents, TNM labels the group’s campaigns as potentially communal, thereby diverting attention away from the broader issue of unjust land claims.

The residents of Munambam have made it clear that they are not interested in communalizing the issue but are seeking allies in their fight for justice. For TNM to frame this solidarity as opportunistic or divisive only undermines the real battle at hand – securing the rights of families who have lived on this land for generations.

Significant changes are unfolding in India’s food consumption pattern and the share of total household expenditure on food has declined substantially in rural and urban areas and across all states and union territories (UTs) since 1947, a government paper has revealed.

It is the first time in modern India (post-independence) that average household spending on food is less than half the overall monthly spending of households and is a marker of significant progress, according to the paper titled ‘Changes in India’s Food Consumption and Policy Implications,’ by the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) to the Prime Minister.

Within food items, the share of expenditure on cereal has declined significantly across rural and urban areas. “However, this decline was more substantial for the bottom 20 per cent of the households in rural and urban areas. In all likelihood, this reflects the effectiveness of the government’s food security policies, which provide free food grains to large numbers of beneficiaries across all states of the country, with a particular focus on the vulnerable bottom 20 per cent of households,” the findings showed.

The significant decline in the share of cereals in household expenditure has allowed households to diversify their diets, with increased spending on milk and milk products, fresh fruits, and eggs, fish and meat.

Schemes like PMGKAY, which provides free food grains to approximately 800 million eligible people across the country, seem to have performed the role of an expansionary fiscal policy where households are spending their ‘saved expenditure’ from cereals on diverse food items.

The paper said that significant changes in the food composition of household expenditure have implications for agriculture policy and the country’s health and nutrition policies.

The changing consumption basket of Indians will also impact the calculation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the future. “As household demand shifts and supply factors improve, the government should continue to support agricultural policies that promote the production and accessibility of diverse food items, mainly fruits, vegetables, and animal-source foods,” read the paper.

Agriculture policies will have to be tailored beyond cereals, whose consumption is declining across all wealth classes of society. “At the same time, support policies like MSP, which overwhelmingly targets cereal procurement, will have a limited impact on the welfare of farmers,” it noted.

The EAC-PM paper also observed a significant increase in the share of household expenditure on served and packaged processed food. This increase was universal across the classes but more pronounced for the country’s top 20 percent of households and significantly more in urban areas. “While food processing is a growth sector and a significant creator of jobs, this rising consumption of processed and packaged food will also likely affect health outcomes,” the paper stressed, adding that policies may be required to regulate the nutritional content of these foods and promote healthier alternatives.

The Chennai Police apprehended four individuals in connection with an incident where they allegedly threw bottles of alcohol and stones at a building housing the Communist Party of India (CPI) office in the T Nagar area of the city.

According to officials quoted in the report by India Today, the four men were found consuming alcohol on Friday night near the building’s compound wall. In an intoxicated state, they reportedly hurled alcohol bottles and stones towards the rear of the building.

A CPI representative lodged a formal complaint with the police, asserting that one of the stones had been thrown at party members while they were conversing on the premises. Subsequently, another stone and a bottle of alcohol were purportedly launched onto the campus. The police were notified and, during their inquiry into the matter, another bottle was thrown at the building.

The CPI claimed that the incident appeared to be premeditated and called on the police to take action against those responsible.

Several hours later, the police announced the apprehension of the four individuals.

The incident also drew the attention of former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who took to his social media handle to address a message to the Communist Party of India. He strongly condemned the attack on their headquarters in Thiagaraya Nagar, Chennai, and emphasized the ongoing concerns about law and order in the region.

He said “In this vidiya (opposite of dawn used by the DMK to emphasize a new era) regime, from individuals to the Governor, political parties including the DMK’s main ally Communist Party of India have no security as demonstrated by the events that are happening on a daily basis. As I have mentioned many times before, law and order is a constant question mark in this regime.”

Palaniswami urged swift arrests and stringent measures against those involved in the attack on the office of their alliance party.

Raj Bhavan Attack

The attack on the CPI office comes just days after the attack on Raj Bhavan. Molotov cocktails (petrol bombs) were thrown at the residence of the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Raj Bhavan, in Chennai. The perpetrator behind this act of terror has been identified as ‘Karukka’ Vinoth who has a history of similar criminal activities and violence.

According to reports, Vinoth executed his plan by siphoning gasoline from motorcycles parked at the Saidapet Court premises. He then transferred the stolen fuel into two containers and ignited them. The incident occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. on 25 October 2023, near the main entrance of Raj Bhavan, frequently used by Governor RN Ravi.

Vinoth was arrested by the police suo moto under vandalism charges. This led to accusations of foul play, with Raj Bhavan posting on their official handle, insinuating that the investigation was tainted from the start.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin stoked a controversy claiming that Sanatana Dharma is like mosquito, dengue, malaria and corona which has to be eradicated and not just opposed.

Udhayanidhi Stalin made this speech during the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association organized “Eradicate Sanatanam Conclave” at Kamarajar Chennai on 2 September 2023, akin to the anti-Hindu Dismantling Global Hindutva conference that was held in 2021. This conference, which openly discusses the destruction of Hindu Dharma, has raised serious questions about the political climate in the state.

Following his comments, politicians including the alliance partners of DMK such as Congress and Shiva Sena, and some political commentators have condemned Udhayanidhi Stalin’s speech.

In this background, the Communist Party of India’s General Secretary D Raja has come in support of Udhaynidhi Stalin and has denigrated Sanatana Dharma again. He said that Sanatana Dharma is deeply rooted in casteism, patriarchy, and inequality.

D Raja said, “First you should understand. Sanatan is not Dharma. Dharma is something else. We are all opposed to Sanatan because Sanatan perpetuates the caste system, patriarchy, and inequality. Let them say no.”

He added, “While hailing Sanatan, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi keeps on saying that Marx and Periyar have brought disaster and Marxism destroyed the social value and social system. How can he speak like that? We do not agree with Amit Shah and the central government. Sanatan is Sanatan. Let them go and read Ambedkar’s ‘Riddles of Hinduism’. Then we will debate.”

In his interview with ANI, D Raja said, “Sanatan cannot be equated to Hinduism. Let Amit Shah, RSS, and BJP people explain to the people about what is Sanatan. What we understand is that Sanatan is an ideology and philosophical view that perpetuates the caste system, patriarchy, and inequality. In Tamil Nadu, we revere Tiruvallur who says that birth is the same to all. ”

He added, “They are raising this issue only to communalize and polarise the people. This is our party’s stand on Sanatan.”

In a recent speech at a ‘Save Manipur’ campaign organized by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kannur district, senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) leader P Jayarajan issued death threats directed at the Kerala unit of BJP and its youth wing, Yuva Morcha.

Shamseer, the MLA from Thalassery constituency representing CPI(M) and the Speaker of the Kerala Assembly, stirred controversy while speaking at the inauguration of the ‘Vidya Jyothi project’ in Kunnathunad constituency, Ernakulam district. During his speech, he referred to Hindu gods like ‘Ganapati’ and the ‘Pushpaka vimana’ associated with Ravana as mythical concepts lacking scientific evidence. Shamseer also suggested that in the era of artificial intelligence, such ideas should be discarded as myths.

Addressing the crowd, Jayarajan warned that any Yuva Morcha member who dared to oppose AN Shamseer, would meet a grim fate, with their place being in the mortuary. The ominous words from the influential CPI(M) leader did not go unnoticed, as the BJP quickly responded by filing a police complaint against Jayarajan for his inflammatory statements.

Two days prior, K Ganesh, the Kerala state secretary of Yuva Morcha, allegedly made a menacing statement during a protest held against Speaker AN Shamseer. He suggested that Shamseer may have made derogatory comments about Hindus, implying that Shamseer believed he would not suffer a fate like TJ Joseph, whose hand was brutally chopped off by Islamic extremists on accusations of blasphemy.

In response to Jayarajan’s intimidating speech, BJP Kerala president K Surendran demanded that the police register a case against the CPI(M) leader for issuing a death threat. He also called for Jayarajan’s removal from the post of Khadi Board chairman, citing his alleged involvement in multiple murder cases and accusing him of attempting to disrupt peace.

Reacting to the threats, Yuva Morcha state president CR Praful Krishna asserted that their organization would not be intimidated. He accused Jayarajan of playing to the gallery, attempting to appease party members and Islamists with his provocative speeches.

BJP and Yuva Morcha have declared their intention to persist with their protest against Speaker Shamseer over his alleged derogatory remarks about Hindus. Surendran asserted that the government’s lack of action regarding Shamseer’s comments emboldened Muslim League volunteers to raise anti-Hindu slogans. “If appropriate action had been taken against Shamseer,” Surendran remarked, “the members of the Muslim League would not have dared to speak in such a manner.”

In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves throughout the Pudukottai locality, a 58-year-old jeweller and former town secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI), P Rajasekaran, allegedly died by suicide on Sunday night (June 25). The incident occurred just days after he was taken into police custody for interrogation. The news of his death has prompted widespread condemnation of the police, with allegations of custodial torture emerging.

The circumstances surrounding Rajasekaran’s death have ignited public anger and led to protests in the town. Traders, along with the deceased’s family members and CPI functionaries, staged a road blockade on Monday, demanding justice and an end to custodial torture. The sub-inspector of police who headed the interrogation has been placed on compulsory wait pending further investigation.

A protest march was organized to the Pattukkottai government hospital, where Rajasekaran’s body was taken. As a mark of solidarity, local jewellery shops remained closed on Monday, emphasizing the collective outrage against the alleged police brutality.

According to sources, Rajasekaran was apprehended by officers from the K K Nagar police station in Tiruchy on June 22 on charges of jewellery theft. His wife was also summoned for questioning, and a search was conducted at their residence. Both were released on June 24.

However, on Sunday, Rajasekaran failed to return home and was later discovered dead near the railway tracks in the Chettiakkadu area, near Pattukkottai. The railway police retrieved his body, which was subsequently sent to the Pattukkottai government hospital for a post-mortem examination. The police have classified the death as a suicide.

The news of Rajasekaran’s demise has elicited strong reactions from various political figures and leaders. CPI state deputy secretary N Periyasamy, Tiruthuraipoondi MLA K Marimuthu, former MLA G Palanichamy, and district secretaries M Uthirapathy and M A Bharathi engaged in talks with police officials, demanding action against those responsible for the alleged custodial torture. Former MLA N R Rangarajan further called for a CB-CID (Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department) investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, the opposition leader in Tamil Nadu and general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Edappadi K. Palaniswami, criticized the ruling DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) government for the incident. Edappadi said, “Rajasekhar, a former Pattukottai town secretary of the Communist Party of India, one of the political organisations that continues to support the Vidiyal government and puppet CM MK Stalin, has committed suicide as a result of police torture.”

Palaniswami added, “There are reports that Rajasekhar has been taken by police from Trichy area for enquiry, claiming that he had bought stolen jewelery from someone a few days ago. Mr. Rajasekhar’s father Mr. Pichaikannu Paththar lived in this area with great dignity. According to the people of Pattukottai area, these people are from good families and have no chance of doing something like this. Though it is said that inquiry is a routine thing in the jewelry business, It seems that his wife was also taken into custody without any connection in the case and tortured in the name of investigation. Due to this, Mr. Rajasekhar jumped in front of the train and committed suicide.”

He stated, “A separate body should be formed to investigate Rajasekhar’s alleged suicide. As a relief, Rs 50 lakhs should be given to their family. I also urge the inept Chief Minister MK Stalin and the Vidiyal DMK government to take legal action against all those responsible, including the police officers who detained and tortured the CPI member.”
