The death of 41-year-old booth-level officer (BLO) Aneesh George in Kannur’s Ettukudukka has triggered widespread protests across Kerala, with government employees’ unions and political parties alleging extreme pressure linked to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. Aneesh, who worked as a school attendant and BLO for Booth No. 18 in the Payyannur constituency, was found hanging at his home on November 16.

Family and Neighbours Cite Severe Work Stress

Residents said that Aneesh appeared distressed due to the workload. Neighbour Shyju V K said Aneesh had taken his family to church in the morning and returned home before taking the extreme step, and that although he had struggled to identify a few houses during his BLO work, he managed with help from others. Family members said he left behind his wife and two children.

A case of unnatural death under BNSS 194 was registered at Peringome Police Station. His brother-in-law Saiju said Aneesh had not been getting enough time to eat or sleep properly and had been under significant strain to complete SIR-related tasks. He also alleged that senior officers had frequently contacted Aneesh for updates, adding that Aneesh’s father had even advised him not to worry about losing his job due to the workload. His body was handed over to the family after post-mortem.

Collector Says No Evidence of Work-Related Pressure

Kannur District Collector Arun K Vijayan, IAS, said that a preliminary inquiry had shown no indication that Aneesh was under work pressure. He stated that Aneesh had been performing well as a BLO and had completed over 77% of the first phase of the SIR exercise. The Collector added that the Chief Electoral Officer had sought a detailed report and that a consolidated version would be sent after combining inputs from the Electoral Registration Officer and the police.

The CEO’s office also said there was no established link between the suicide and SIR duties, noting that all necessary support had been provided.

Statewide Boycott by BLOs; Protests at Collectorates

The incident prompted BLOs across the state to boycott SIR duties on Monday. Government employees’ unions, including the Action Council of State Government Employees and Teachers and the Joint Committee of Teacher Service Organisations, held protests at district collectorates demanding that excessive pressure be stopped and that the SIR schedule be reconsidered.

The Kerala NGO Association also staged statewide protests calling for the suspension of SIR activities to prevent further tragedies.

Despite the boycott call, many BLOs reportedly continued their duties due to the pending workload ahead of the December 4 deadline set by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Congress Alleges CPI(M) Pressure on BLO

The Congress claimed that Aneesh had also faced political intimidation from CPI(M) workers in his area. Kannur DCC member Rajith Narath said the CPI(M) local leadership had reportedly objected to a Congress booth-level agent accompanying Aneesh during house visits for enumeration. He alleged that the intention was to retain invalid names, including those of deceased voters, those who had shifted residences, and duplicate entries on the electoral rolls.

According to him, the area had a history of blocking non-CPI(M) booth agents during elections, and he cited concerns that votes were often cast in the names of those who were dead or no longer residing in the area. He also said that although the SIR process would help remove such names, CPI(M) workers were reluctant because it would reduce their vote base.

He added that Aneesh had filed a complaint with the District Collector days before his death but that no action had been taken.

Leaked Phone Call Fuels Controversy

A recorded phone conversation, released by the Kannur District Congress Committee, purportedly between Aneesh and a Congress booth agent Vysakh, indicated that Aneesh had told him he was under pressure not to allow the Congress agent to accompany him.

Kannur District Congress Committee president Martin George alleged that threats from CPI(M) workers had contributed to Aneesh’s suicide and that workload alone could not explain the incident. He claimed the conversation supported these allegations.

According to him, CPI(M) booth-level agent Rafeek had threatened Aneesh, and instead of allowing the officially designated BLA to accompany the BLO, a former CPI(M) branch secretary and other party workers had been accompanying him during the SIR enumeration. Martin George said the CPI(M) was attempting to retain bogus voters in the Alappadamba panchayat and that identifying such entries through the revised electoral roll could have placed Aneesh in a difficult position.

As reported in Mathrubhumi English, in the audio clip, Aneesh was heard telling Vysakh not to accompany him from the next day, reportedly saying that some individuals were strongly opposing it and intended to block his presence. When Vysakh asked who was creating the obstruction, Aneesh replied that he would explain it in person. Vysakh was heard advising him to report the matter to senior officials, arguing that he was accompanying the BLO as per Election Commission guidelines. Aneesh responded that Vysakh could file a complaint stating that he was not being allowed to join the enumeration and that the situation was difficult because the area was dominated by certain groups.

Congress leaders argued that the call reflected the political pressure Aneesh had been facing.

CPI(M) Kannur district secretary KK Ragesh dismissed these allegations, saying the incident was being misinterpreted for political gain.

Opposition Demands Accountability

Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan said initial information suggested that CPI(M) interference should be investigated and alleged that both the CPI(M) and BJP were attempting to manipulate the electoral roll. He urged the state government and the ECI to ensure the safety of BLOs and stated that the short deadline placed excessive burden on officers, most of whom were women.

KPCC president Sunny Joseph said a phone call indicated that CPI(M) workers had allegedly threatened Aneesh with a false complaint. He argued that such political pressure, combined with work strain, pushed Aneesh to suicide. Joseph also criticised the ECI for implementing SIR after local body election announcements and said the Congress would approach the Supreme Court against the process.

Tamil Nadu BJP Secretary SG Suryah has pointed out dismal performance of the Communist parties in the recently concluded Delhi Assembly elections, where they failed to secure more votes than NOTA (None of the Above) in any of the constituencies they contested. The Left parties, which had formed an alliance to contest six seats, were unable to make any significant impact, with their vote count trailing behind NOTA in all segments.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) fielded candidates in Karawal Nagar and Badarpur, while the Communist Party of India (CPI) contested in Vikaspuri and Palam. The CPI(ML) Liberation participated in Narela and Kondli. Despite their efforts, none of the Communist candidates managed to surpass the NOTA votes in any of the nine seats they contested.

Taking to his official X account, SG Suryah highlighted the poor performance of the Communist alliance. He shared the vote details from the nine constituencies, emphasizing that the Communists were outperformed by NOTA in every seat.

  • In the Palam Assembly constituency, the BJP secured 82,046 votes, while the Communists received only 326 votes, significantly lower than NOTA’s 1,119 votes.
  • In Adarsh Nagar, the BJP won with 52,510 votes, whereas the Communists garnered just 133 votes, compared to NOTA’s 377.
  • In Okhla, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) emerged victorious with 88,943 votes, followed by the BJP with 65,304 votes. The Communists managed only 259 votes, falling short of NOTA’s 604.
  • In Wazirpur, the BJP won with 54,721 votes, while the Communists secured 190 votes, less than NOTA’s 652.
  • In Karawal Nagar, the BJP triumphed with 107,367 votes, and the Communists received 457 votes, trailing behind NOTA’s 709.
  • In Narela, the BJP won with 87,215 votes, while the Communists got 328 votes, compared to NOTA’s 981.
  • In Vikaspuri, the BJP secured 112,120 votes, and the Communists received 580 votes, less than NOTA’s 1,127.
  • In Badarpur, AAP won with 112,991 votes, followed by the BJP with 87,103 votes. The Communists managed only 367 votes, below NOTA’s 915.
  • In Kondli, AAP won with 61,792 votes, and the BJP secured 55,499 votes. The Communists received a mere 100 votes, far fewer than NOTA’s 776.

In total, the BJP garnered 703,885 votes across these constituencies, while NOTA received 7,620 votes. The Communist alliance, however, could only muster 2,740 votes in the nine seats they contested.

In a surprising turn of events, a school in Kerala has decided to halt its mid-day meal program, raising concerns among students and parents. The headmaster, J.P. Anish, is grappling with a financial crisis, highlighting the failure of the state.

Starting this Thursday, students at Vidyadhiraja LPS in Karakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, will no longer receive mid-day meals, a move that has left the head teacher deeply concerned. Anish, in a heartfelt letter to educational authorities in Nedumangad, revealed his struggle to provide for the school’s 607 students.

He wrote, “Mid-day meals at my school will be stopped from Thursday. Sir, just because I’m the head teacher I have to live in fear of lenders,”.

The predicament began when Anish resorted to borrowing ₹2 lakh from a cooperative bank to procure vegetables and essential items required for the mid-day meals. This loan, carrying an 11.50% interest rate, placed a significant burden on the school’s finances.

To keep the mid-day meal program running in the past months (June, July, and August), Anish even dipped into his own salary, contributing ₹50,000 to cover the costs. It’s worth noting that the government typically allocates ₹8 per child per day for mid-day meals, specifically intended for students up to class 8.

However, despite the allocation, the school claims to have received no financial support for mid-day meals during the current academic year. Anish, in his letter, expressed his concern, pointing out that the mid-day meal program had never faced such disruptions before.

This situation has sparked a debate over the effectiveness of the state government’s policies, with some critics highlighting what they see as double standards.

Anish had filed a complaint with the Assistant Education Officer (AEO) along with the receipt of the loan. The central government provides 60% of the midday meal scheme, while the state government provides 40%. The education minister’s office claims that the central government took back the second installment of ₹132 crore in the financial year 2021-22, which the state had given on time to the schools. The state education minister’s office is in correspondence with the union education ministry, confirming that the funds were already spent by the state government.

The central government has put Kerala in a tight spot by refusing to allocate funds for the school’s mid-day meal scheme citing the amount spent the previous year. The Centre contends that the ₹209 crore spent in 2021-22 has not been recorded in the Public Financial Management System (PFMS), a centralised monitoring system under the Union Finance Ministry.

Protests By School Staff

Kerala’s teachers’ organisations are protesting against the government due to a severe fund crunch. Headteachers have not received ₹130 crore for the noon meal scheme for students for the past three months. The delay in Central funding is due to the state government’s failure to provide details of the total number of students benefiting from the scheme on time. Teachers’ organisations claim that schools will have to stop the mid-day meals scheme if the state does not disburse the arrears. Major demands include disbursal of the three-month arrears, revision of the eight-year-old rate for the scheme, and additional funds for the ‘nutritious food scheme’ of the state government. They have also asked the government to meet transport and cooking gas costs. The KPSTA plans to launch a three-day agitation in front of the state secretariat on September 13 and a one-day protest march to the education minister’s office on September 16.

This has not been a recent story – in 2021, as per this OnManorama report, teachers have been burning their pockets to keep ingredients ready for the mid-day meal scheme since the government had not increased funds for it then.

Critics argue that while the state is willing to welcome students from other regions, it struggles to provide a basic necessity like mid-day meals to its own students.

This situation has put a spotlight on what some perceive as the shortcomings of the Kerala Model and the leadership of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The suspension of mid-day meals at Vidyadhiraja LPS serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by schools and educators in Kerala.

A hygiene worker in Cuddalore tragically died succumbing to allergies allegedly after a Communist Councillor in forced him to clean a manhole that was filled with human excreta.

In a scathing letter addressed to Madurai MP Su Venkatesan, Tamil Nadu BJP State Secretary SG Suryah on 7 June 2023, raised serious allegations against Communist Party councillor Viswanathan regarding the tragic death of a hygiene worker in Pennadam town panchayat 12th ward, Cuddalore district.

BJP Tamil Nadu State Secretary SG Suryah has alleged that a sanitation worker died due to allergies in the body after a ward member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) forced him to clean the manhole. Suryah’s letter highlights the apparent indifference shown by Venkatesan and the Communist Party towards this distressing incident.

The letter begins with a sharp greeting to Venkatesan, whom Suryah describes as a “lover of revolutionary ideals and politics.” Suryah pointed out that Viswanathan’s alleged actions, accusing him of instructing a sanitation worker to enter a drain filled with feces, thereby endangering his health and well-being.

He further called out the hypocrisy of the MP saying, “The deceased is a scheduled caste brother! Where’s your red flag! Where is your fighting spirit? Where are your passionate words? If you are against the ruling BJP government, you will come forward immediately. Where have you gone now? Did you sneak out? Why doesn’t your red flag fly against your fellow comrades? Or won’t your red flag take to the streets and fight in support of the Scheduled Caste brothers? Your fake politics draped in red flag stinks worse than the manhole. Find a way to live as a human being, my friend.”

It is note worthy to mention that the MK Stalin-led DMK government, which announced a compensation of ₹10 lakhs to each of the families of the deceased who consumed spurious liquor and awarded ₹50,000 solatium to one of the culprits responsible for the tragedy, has not yet announced any compensation for the man who died entering a manhole

Ma Venkatesan, Chairman of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, recently disclosed in an interview that Tamil Nadu holds the dubious distinction of having the highest number of deaths in manholes. According to official government data spanning from 1993 to the present day, approximately 225 sanitation workers have tragically lost their lives while carrying out manhole cleaning duties. When we examine the performance of the Dravida Model government over the past two years, it becomes apparent that Tamil Nadu has witnessed a disturbing surge in violence against Scheduled Castes.

This recent tragedy involving the death of a sanitation worker serves as further evidence corroborating the data disclosed by the Chairman of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis.

On April 17th, K. Surendran, the BJP State president, criticized the LDF government’s handling of terrorist activities, blaming their “soft” approach for the train arson incident at Elathur. He demanded that the Home department controlled by the Chief Minister provide a clear answer as to who aided the accused in committing the crime.

Surendran further alleged that the police failed to take sufficient action against those who helped the accused and accused the government of compromising with radical elements in the state for the sake of votes. He demanded an investigation into whether the police’s failure allowed the accused to escape and for the case to be given to the NIA for further investigation.

Recently, following the police’s confirmation of a terror angle, the Kochi unit of the NIA took over the investigation into the Kozhikode train arson case. The incident took place on April 2, 2023, when a man set fire to coach number D1 of the Alappuzha-Kannur Express near Elathur railway station in Kozhikode district. There was a visible delay in the whole procedure by the ruling government. The slow response of the state government and its police department in dealing with the issue raises questions about state government’s commitment to national security. Despite the grave nature of the situation, the ruling communist government downplayed the incident initially raising eyebrows regarding the ruling dispensation’s intent.

Communist Government’s Lax Attitude

Ruling communist dispensation’s lax attitude while dealing with issues of Islamic terrorism is well documented. Previously back in December 2022, BJP’s Kerala Vice President KS Radhakrishnan has hit out at the ruling LDF-led government as well as the previous UDF regime in the state for promoting terrorism by failing to act against the Popular Front of India (PFI), which has been proscribed by the Centre.

“There’s an unfortunate situation in Kerala, both the LDF and the UDF governments keep unanimity in promoting terrorism. Economically, socially, and religiously powerful groups are promoting terrorism. The Kerala Police doing nothing against the PFI, they are providing them help,” the BJP leader said. He further stated that. “A strong group is promoting terror activities in Kerala and getting financial assistance from abroad “Instead of curbing them, the Kerala government is providing facilities for the terror group,” Radhakrishnan stated. According to Radhakrishnan, “Jamaat-e-Islami publicly admitted that they got money to establish groups of media in Kerala with the help of Islamic funding.” He claimed that these parties remain unchallenged in Kerala, giving a context to their actions. “PFI has been assisted by popular members of the LDF and the UDF,” Radhakrishnan told ANI.

He further claimed that Islamic organisations were funding significant political parties such as the UDF and the LDF. He claimed that the government was not acting against PFI despite the court orders. “Either the government of Kerala is afraid of the Islamic groups or they have been sufficiently compensated by the Islamic terror groups,” the BJP leader added. He demanded a clarification from the Chief Minister of Kerala in this regard. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday submitted in the Special NIA Court at Kochi that the banned PFI leaders in Kerala were in touch with some of the Islamic State (IS) and Al-Qaeda leaders. NIA also submitted that there is a secret wing of PFI working to prepare a hit list of people belonging to other communities and their activities were centred around the PFI office.

It was also revealed that the accused Shahrukh Saifi was a highly radicalized man and had watched Zakir Naik videos. He had also done a recee on the premises of the railway station until boarding the train.

Is There Merit In The BJP’s Accusations?

On 19 December, the Kerala High Court of Justice A K Jayasankaran Nambiar asked the state government the reason for the delay in attaching the properties of the terrorist organization PFI (Popular Front of India). Earlier, the court had ordered the state government to recover Rs 5.20 crore from the office-bearers of the now-banned PFI and its State General Secretary, Abdul Sathar. PFI terrorists had caused widespread damage and violence after calling for a flash hartal on 23 September.

The callous attitude of the state government came on top of several incidents of violence, including stone pelting reported throughout Kerala in response to a strike called by Popular Front of India (PFI) halting life in the state on 23rd September. It had resulted in the arrest of as many as 500 people in the state along with preventive detention of another 400.

Reports of hurling of bombs, breaking of public life and chanting of anti-national slogans filled the airwaves throughout the nation on that day of violence. The state government’s slow reaction had raised many eyebrows and questioned their credibility in responding to instances of national security importance which necessitated urgent action. This puts into open why the state government adopted a slow reaction in stark contrast to the whirlwind approach adopted by the central agencies such as NIA and ED?

The Politics Of ‘Soft Touch’

The politics of ‘soft touch’ approach adopted by CPI(M) can be traced back in time There have been allegations and reports of ties between the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM and radical Islamists in Kerala. One such instance was the 2006 Kalamassery bus burning case, where a group of radical Islamist activists belonging to the National Development Front (NDF) burned a bus in Kalamassery as part of a protest a visit by then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

It was alleged that some of the activists involved in the incident were CPM members, and that the party had supported their actions. instance was the controversial visit of PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani, an accused in the 2008 Bangalore blasts case, to the CPM headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram in 2014. The visit sparked protests alleging that the CPM was cosying up to terrorists. Another instance was the 2012 T.P. Chandrasekharan murder case, where a former CPM leader was killed by a group of assailants allegedly hired by the party.

According to reports, some of the assailants had links to radical Islamist groups such as the Popular Front of India (PFI). In 2018, a senior leader of the CPM, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, was accused of shielding a CPM member who was allegedly involved in the murder of an RSS worker in Kannur. The RSS worker’s family had alleged that Balakrishnan’s son Binoy was also involved in the murder, and that Balakrishnan had used his political influence to protect him. However, Balakrishnan denied the allegations and said that the CPM had no links with extremist elements.

In 2020, it was alleged that the CPM was providing shelter to two women who were arrested by the NIA for their alleged involvement in the ISIS Khorasan module. The women had reportedly been expelled from the PFI, and the CPM was accused of helping them evade arrest. However, the CPM denied the allegations and said that they had no links with any extremist groups. In another instance, the NIA had reportedly found that a CPM leader’s son-in-law had close links with the PFI. The leader, P Jayarajan, had allegedly given a job to his son-in-law in a government-owned company, despite the latter being on the run from the police in a PFI-related case. Jayarajan had denied the allegations and said that his son-in-law had no links with any extremist groups. These allegations have led to criticism of the CPM’s alleged ties with extremist elements and their failure to act against them.

Back in 2018, when news came that Kerala had asked for a ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI), Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and then Director General of Police Loknath Behera were quick to deny the report. “It is not the Kerala government’s policy to ban any communal or terrorist outfit. If any outfit that creates riots in India and divides society on communal lines needs to be banned, then it should be the RSS first. Such organisations cannot be countered with a ban and this has been proved by our experience in the past.”, he said.

The CM’s statement did not come as a surprise for political critics in the state, since the CPI (M)’s lenient attitude towards the PFI and its political outfit, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has been an open secret. CPI (M) has even been accused of closing its eyes or even quietly supporting the radical activities of the PFI and its allied outfits for many years. However, things took a dramatic turn after the murder of Abhimanyu, leader of the CPI (M) students’ wing Students Federation of India (SFI). The prime accused, who is the president of the Campus Front of India (CFI), a student wing of PFI, at Maharaja’s College, was arrested. In a massive crackdown, nearly 600 SDPI activists have been taken into custody and questioned about Abhimanyu’s murder – a visible gesture of the CPI (M)’s changed stand that it will not tolerate the PFI anymore as one of its trusted comrades. But certain realities still dawn on the party and it is evident that the party still adopts soft touch approach against the radicalists. This reality is clear from party’s renewed attempt to bring IUML in to its fold.

Kerala: Islamist’s Own Country

Kerala is a state which is cursed by radical Islamic tendencies. For example, as per a recent investigation, since 2009 – nearly 32,000 girls from Kerala and Mangalore from Hindu and Christian communities have been converted to Islam and most of them end up landing in Syria, Afghanistan, and other ISIS and Haqqani influential areas. Plenty of Kerala men and women are said to have joined the ISKP (Islamic State of Khorasan Province) in recent years. The United Nations warned in its 2020 terrorism report that there are a substantial number of ISIS terrorists in the Indian state of Kerala. The threat of radicalism and terrorism are few among major challenges faced by the world today and it poses substantial risk to stability and harmony of our society. Terrorism certainly poses major challenges in our society too. Former PM of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee once stated that, ‘Terrorism has become a festering wound. It is an enemy of humanity.’ And it is high time the Kerala government start taking the issue seriously without being swayed by vote bank or appeasement and start taking stern actions against fringe elements on ground for the sake of India’s national security.

The Communist government in Kerala is said to have issued an anti-Hindu on November 30, saying that if any government employees made a pilgrimage to the Sabarimala temple by undertaking the fast, a small sum would be deducted from their monthly salary.

Aiyappa devotees take up a fast for 41 days and also ensure that they follow all rituals in order to visit the Aiyappa temple in Sabarimala every year. This being said, the left-wing Communist Kerala government is said to have issued a notice similar to the Jizia tax issued by Mughal emperor, Aurangazeb on his Hindu population.

Speculations are that, the government has said that if any government employee fails to groom his facial hair due to the fast he has undertaken, he will become ineligible for governmental benefits. In addition, a sum will be deducted from their monthly income if they take up the pilgrimage to Sabarimala.

Further reports say that this anti-Hindu notice has been removed by the Communist government in Kerala, according to unofficial information.

Suriya’s Jai Bhim directed by T J Gnanavel has been subject to controversy for quite sometime now. Everyday, there is something new that comes up with regard to the movie. The controversy first began when the PMK party opposed the movie showing the Vanniyar community in negative light. While the names of most of the characters were kept the same, the name of the main perpetrator, the Sub-inspector who is responsible for Rajakannu’s custodial death, was changed from Anthony Samy to Guru. This, and the fact that in one scene the character is shown along with the Vanniyar’s sacred motif, the ‘Agni Pot’ has angered the members of the community.

Now, another major allegation has been placed on advocate Chandru who’s character is played by Suriya in the film. The allegation is that advocate Chandru along with a few members of the Communist party tried to bargain a deal with Anthony Samy for ₹5 lakhs, to ensure that he is not found guilty in the case. However, as Anthony Samy could not give more than ₹2 lakhs, they decided to trap him in the case entirely.  This expose has come from Anthony Samy’s very own nephew (Sister’s son).

In an audio clip published exclusively on Kathir News we can hear Anthony Samy’s nephew saying, “There’s a lot of difference between what is shown in the movie and what happened in reality. Chandru and all the communist party members bargained a deal for ₹5 lakhs. But, my uncle was merely a Sub-inspector at that time and he couldn’t afford it. None of this was shown in the movie. They should have portrayed either advocate Chandru or the members of the Communist party as villains.”

The point to be noted is that the movie reiterated that advocate Chandru did not even take a penny to handle the case for Rajakannu and only fought for justice. However, the reality of the movie that was ‘based on a true story’  is all coming out now. Check out the full audio file here:

The Left Democratic Front government in Kerala under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has received the Governor’s ascent for the controversial amendment to the Kerala Police Act that paves way for punishing individuals with 5 year jail term for ‘offensive’ social media posts.

The newly inserted section 118 (A) of the Kerala Police Act states that “any person creating or sharing a social media post which is offensive or is intended to offend or threaten another person, through any means of communication, is liable to face imprisonment of five years or a fine of ₹10,000 or both.”

The Communist government has claimed that this law is necessary to fight crimes, hate speech fake propaganda on social media. However, this has led to apprehensions that the state could become a North Korea and China using the law for silencing critics of the Communist party and government.

The opposition parties in Kerala have already raised the banner against the draconian move  allegeing that this amendment will give more power to the cops and curtail freedom of expression.
