A 55-year-old Canadian-Indian businessman, Arvi Singh Sagoo, died after being brutally attacked by a stranger in Edmonton, Canada. The assault took place on 19 October 2025, after Sagoo confronted a man urinating on his vehicle. According to Global News, Sagoo had gone out for dinner with his girlfriend that night. When they returned to their car early the next morning, they found a man relieving himself on it. When Sagoo asked him to stop, the man reportedly replied, “Whatever I want,” and struck him hard on the head.

Sagoo collapsed and lost consciousness on the spot. His girlfriend immediately called 911, and paramedics arrived within minutes. He was rushed to a hospital and placed on life support but succumbed to his injuries on 24 October. Police later identified the assailant as 40-year-old Kyle Papin, who was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. Investigators confirmed that Papin did not know Sagoo and that the attack appeared random and unprovoked.

Following the tragedy, one of Sagoo’s close friends, Vincent Ram, launched a fundraiser to support Sagoo’s two children. The campaign stated that the funds would help with funeral costs, daily needs, and education. “This isn’t just about financial help,” the post read. “It’s about showing that the community stands with them as they face life without their father.”

The incident comes amid growing concern over the safety of Indian-origin residents in Canada, as several violent attacks and murders have occurred in recent months.

Another Indian-origin businessman murdered

Days before Sagoo’s death, another Indian-origin businessman, 68-year-old Darshan Singh Sahsi, was shot dead on 27 October 2025 outside his home in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang later claimed responsibility for the killing. CCTV footage showed a masked gunman emerging from a silver sedan, firing multiple shots into Sahsi’s pickup truck, and fleeing within seconds. Sahsi was found critically injured and later died of his wounds.

Gang member Goldy Dhillon admitted that the Ludhiana-born businessman was targeted because he allegedly refused to pay extortion money related to drug trade operations. Sahsi, who moved to Canada in 1991, had built a successful business, Canam International, after reviving a struggling textile recycling unit.

Punjabi singer shot in gang attack

Earlier in October 2025, Punjabi singer Teji Kahlon was shot in the stomach in Canada. Three men claiming affiliation with gangster Rohit Godara uploaded a video confessing to the shooting. In the video, they accused Kahlon of supplying weapons and conspiring against their gang, warning that they would “finish him” if he did not stop.

Indian student killed in crossfire

On 17 April 2025, 21-year-old Mohawk College student Harsimrat Randhawa was shot dead at a bus stop in Ontario. She was an innocent bystander caught in a gunfight between two vehicles — a black Mercedes SUV and a white car. Randhawa was struck in the chest and died on the spot despite the efforts of paramedics. Her death shocked the Indian student community and reignited concerns about public safety.

Security guard shot dead in Edmonton

In December 2024, 20-year-old Indian student Harshandeep Singh was murdered while working as a security guard in Edmonton. CCTV footage showed three individuals harassing and pushing him down a stairwell before one of them shot him from behind. Singh died at the scene. Police arrested two suspects and charged them with first-degree murder.

Student stabbed to death in Ontario

Another victim, 22-year-old Gurasis Singh, was stabbed to death on 1 December 2024 inside his rented apartment in Sarnia, Ontario. Singh had been in Canada for just four months pursuing higher education. The suspect, 36-year-old Crossley Hunter, was charged with second-degree murder. While police said the incident followed a dispute with a neighbour, Singh’s father alleged his son was attacked while asleep.

Sharp rise in hate crimes against Indians

These consecutive attacks reflect an alarming rise in violence and hate crimes against Indian-origin individuals in Canada and across the world. A study by the London-based Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) reported a 227% increase in hate crimes targeting South Asians between 2019 and 2023. Online anti-Indian hate speech rose by 1,350% over the same period, with over 26,600 social media posts using slurs such as “pajeet” between May 2023 and April 2025.

The ISD study also found that far-right groups like Diagolon. led by extremist Jeremy MacKenzie have played a major role in spreading anti-Indian narratives online, often using satire or “jokes” to mask racist content. During the lead-up to Canada’s 2025 federal election, over 2,300 posts promoting anti-South Asian hate were shared, generating 1.2 million engagements.

Experts warn that this surge in online hate has directly translated into real-world violence, deepening the sense of fear among Indian immigrants and students living in Canada.

When a Canadian family lost their home to a fire sparked by Diwali fireworks, the reasonable response would have been to condemn irresponsible behavior and demand accountability. Instead, singer Chinmayi Sripaada saw an opportunity to rage-bait and unleash her pathological anti-Brahminical venom, revealing the stunning intellectual bankruptcy of her worldview.

Her initial tweet demanding that “the Indian community should basically rebuild his house for him” was rightly challenged.

Why should an entire community be held responsible for the actions of a few individuals? This collective guilt narrative is as absurd as demanding the white community fund reforestation for every California wildfire.

But Chinmayi’s true colors emerged when cornered. Like a broken record stuck in a colonial-era groove, she pivoted with the predictability of a conditioned response: “And Brahmins!”

Suddenly, a house fire in Canada became about “Brahminical oppression” – a bizarre logical leap that would embarrass even the most dedicated conspiracy theorist.

The Temple Lie Exposed

When challenged to name a single temple where Brahmins currently prevent entry to other castes, Chinmayi retreated into historical anecdotes from the 11th century. Why? Because she cannot name a single contemporary temple practicing such exclusion. The truth she deliberately ignores facts such as the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) actively sponsoring SC/ST students in Veda Patashalas and appointing SC/ST archakas across Telugu temples, temple entry restrictions today are based on religious protocols that apply to all devotees regardless of caste – Brahmins are barred from entering inside the garbha griha unless they’re performing priestly duties.

The real caste discrimination is seen within SC communities themselves, where sub-castes bar each other from temples – a fact Chinmayi conveniently overlooks.

The Historical Illiteracy Of Selective Outrage

Chinmayi’s historical references betray either shocking ignorance or deliberate deception.

She cites Basaveshwara’s 11th century movement as evidence of “Brahminical oppression,” while ignoring that multiple non-Brahmin scholars and authors flourished in ancient India, educational access wasn’t exclusively Brahmin-dominated as she claims and every major religion historically restricted access – Catholic priests barred serfs, Islamic practices maintained hierarchies, yet she singles out only Brahmins.

Her demand for “reparations from Brahmins” while dismissing calls for accountability from medieval Islamic invaders reveals her selective morality. Why are alleged Brahmin actions from centuries ago condemnable while medieval atrocities get a free pass?

The Reservation Hypocrisy

This “oppression” narrative continues despite Brahmins having faced decades of state-mandated discrimination through reservation quotas in education, jobs, and promotions, age relaxations that disadvantage Brahmin candidates, temple control wrested from Brahmin communities, systemic discrimination justified by the very rhetoric Chinmayi peddles.

Yet she speaks as if Brahmins remain privileged oppressors rather than communities systematically marginalized by the very policies she champions.

The Real Agenda Exposed

Chinmayi’s logic follows a disturbing pattern:

Fire accident in Canada? Punish Brahmins.

Someone fails an exam? Blame Brahmins.

Fictional police brutality in movies? Hang Brahmins.

Rains in Chennai? Blame Brahmins.

This is pathological scapegoating. She is practicing the blame game where every topic inevitably circles back to predetermined conclusions regardless of relevance.

When confronted with facts, Chinmayi will resort to personal attacks and vague historical references rather than addressing contemporary reality. She cannot name specific temples practicing exclusion because such institutional discrimination largely doesn’t exist in modern Hindu temple administration.

The tragedy isn’t just Chinmayi’s manufactured outrage – it’s that she commands a million followers while peddling this divisive hatred. She represents the worst of activist culture: privileged individuals manufacturing grievances to stay relevant while actual communities move toward integration and progress.

Perhaps instead of searching for Brahmins to blame for every global misfortune, Chinmayi should look inward at her own prejudice. The real oppression isn’t in temple corridors – it’s in minds poisoned by ideological hatred that sees every incident through the narrow lens of caste warfare. Would she allow people of all castes into her home, sleep on her bed? Why did she choose to marry someone from her own caste, she could have very well led the reparations and married out of the community?

The Canadian family deserves sympathy, and the responsible individuals deserve legal consequences. What they don’t deserve is becoming pawns in Chinmayi’s tired, fact-free crusade against a community she’s determined to villainize regardless of truth or context.

The Canadian government has officially flagged concerns over terror financing linked to Khalistani extremists and admitted for the first time that such groups have been operating from its soil and receiving financial support an issue repeatedly raised by India for years.  The admission has come through a fresh assessment by Canada’s Department of Finance on money laundering and terrorist financing risks.

According to the report, several terrorist entities, including Khalistani violent extremist groups, continue to receive financial backing from within Canada for activities tied to politically motivated violence.

Canada has long been considered a base for Khalistani outfits such as Babbar Khalsa, the International Sikh Youth Federation, and Sikhs for Justice. For the first time, Ottawa has formally acknowledged the extremist group’s presence and the financial activities linked to it.

The report titled ‘2025 Assessment of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Risks in Canada’, released by its Finance Department, observed that these groups continue to attract funds for “activities linked to politically motivated violence.” It further stated that the Khalistani group is “suspected of raising funds in a number of countries, including Canada.” “These groups previously had an extensive fundraising network in Canada but now appear to consist of smaller pockets of individuals with allegiance to the cause but seemingly no particular affiliation to a specific group,” the assessment said.

It also underlined that “several terrorist entities listed under the Criminal Code in Canada that fall under the Politically Motivated Violent Extremism (PMVE) category, such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Khalistani violent extremist groups Babbar Khalsa International and the International Sikh Youth Federation, have been observed by law enforcement and intelligence agencies to receive financial support originating from Canada.”

The report further emphasised that Canadian law enforcement and intelligence agencies have documented financial backing for these extremist groups, including Hamas and Hezbollah, from sources within the country. This formal acknowledgement is being seen as a major development, especially in light of India’s repeated warnings that Canada has become a safe haven for anti-India elements. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced strong criticism for his perceived inaction on the matter, which also contributed to strained relations with New Delhi.

The report also pointed out that beyond Hamas and Hezbollah, “Khalistani violent extremist groups have also been known to use networks to solicit donations from diaspora communities to raise and move funds, including through NPOs.” The findings mark the first time Canada has formally admitted to the scale of fundraising activities by Khalistani extremist groups on its soil, a matter that has long been a point of contention between Ottawa and New Delhi.

A Canadian investigative journalist raised serious concerns about the growing threat posed by Khalistani extremists operating from Canadian soil, just days before the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.

Mocha Bezirgan, speaking to ANI, said he was attacked by Khalistan supporters during a rally in Vancouver, hours after warning about growing extremism targeting Indian leaders.

“It just happened two hours ago and I’m still shaking,” Bezirgan told ANI over the phone. “They acted like thugs — crowding in on me, grabbing my phone, trying to stop me recording.”

Bezirgan, known for covering Khalistan-related activities across North America, was physically confronted while he was reporting from the pro-Khalistan demonstration. In a post on X, he said: “I’ve been surrounded by a group of Khalistanis who grabbed my phone out of my hand and threatened me. Naturally I’m a bit shaken, but not deterred.”

He described the attack as a direct result of his independent editorial work. “Today’s thuggery I was subjected to was not the first time,” he wrote, referring to an incident in March 2024 when he reported that Khalistan supporters were “armed with daggers, swords, and spears” while protesting against India’s high commissioner in Edmonton.

Bezirgan’s comments come amid heightened tensions between India and Canada, particularly over Ottawa’s perceived inaction against groups operating from Canadian soil. He alleged that the movement is largely orchestrated by Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) and supported by political organizations, including the World Sikh Organization (WSO), which he described as offering political cover.

“This is a movement headed by Sikhs for Justice. They mobilise people to come from local Gurudwaras to create a bit of a crowd,” he said. “But there are bigger political organizations like the World Sikh Organization, based in Canada, which has a troubled history. Their executives include current and former MPs and ministers, who have spread influence across Canadian institutions.”

He also raised concern over the reluctance of Canadian politicians to distance themselves from these groups. “Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, the NDP, and some Liberal MPs recently attended a Nagar Kirtan in Surrey, BC, which had significant Khalistani influence. They shared the stage with Santokh Singh Kelha, a convicted Sikh Canadian who conspired to bomb an airplane.”

Bezirgan condemned what he called the glorification of violence by Khalistan sympathisers. “They are celebrating the assassins of Indira Gandhi and openly saying they will ambush and kill India’s Prime Minister, Modi’s politics at the G7,” he told ANI. “They say, ‘We are the descendants of the killers of Indira Gandhi,’ and glorify these acts of violence.”

He also raised concerns over the lack of media coverage and accountability within Canada. “It is disturbing that Canadian politicians continue to associate with such extremists, despite their violent history and inflammatory rhetoric,” he said. “As a citizen, I expect my representatives to distance themselves from extremists and those with violent pasts.”

For the G7 Summit, Prime Minister Modi recently received an invitation from Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney defended the move, citing India’s status as the world’s “fifth-largest economy” and a key player in global supply chains. Modi’s travel plans are yet to be finalised, but he is expected to arrive in Alberta in time for the G7 outreach session on 17 June 2025.

Meanwhile, the World Sikh Organization of Canada strongly criticised Carney’s invitation to Modi, describing it as a “betrayal of Canadian values and Sikh concerns.” In a statement, WSO’s legal counsel Balpreet Singh said the decision had triggered “outrage and pain” within the Canadian Sikh community. He added that the organisation had formally written to Prime Minister Carney on May 21, urging him not to invite Modi.

Meanwhile, G7 preparations continue amid growing controversy. The group Sikhs for Justice is calling for action against Modi’s visit. “Yes, I am ready to kill Modi politics, [to] ambush Modi,” said Manjinder Singh, leading a convoy from Gurdwara Dashmesh in Calgary. “[He] is an enemy of Canada, this Hindu terrorist Narendra Modi.” The group is asking Canadians to join them in their “ambush” tomorrow. Sikhs for Justice consider themselves the descendants of the assassins of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and are calling for the killing of Modi’s politics during their demonstration in Canada.

Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a 20-year-old Pakistani national residing in Canada, was extradited to the United States on 10 June 2025 to face federal terrorism charges after allegedly plotting a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn in support of ISIS. The extradition was announced by Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel, who described the development as “major news.”

On his social media handle, he wrote, Major news… earlier this afternoon, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a Pakistani citizen residing in Canada, was extradited to the United States on charges of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and attempting to commit acts of terrorism. In the fall of last year, Khan allegedly planned to travel from Canada to New York and carry out a mass shooting in support of ISIS at a Jewish Center in Brooklyn. Khan allegedly planned his attack to occur on October 7, 2024 — the one year anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel. Thankfully, the great work of FBI teams and our partners exposed those plans and shut them down — and Khan was arrested by Canadian authorities on September 4, 2024. He has now arrived in the U.S. and will face American justice. This case is a reminder of the constant threat of terrorism facing every corner of the world — as well as the disturbing rise in threats against our Jewish communities. Your FBI will continue to be on guard and work around the clock to counter them. @NewYorkFBI @FBIChicago and @FBILosAngeles did great work in this case with our partners and we thank them.”

Khan, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, was arrested by Canadian authorities on 4 September 2024, near Ormstown, Quebec — just 12 miles from the U.S. border — while attempting to illegally cross into the United States with the help of a human smuggler. He is accused of planning a large-scale terrorist attack using AR-style rifles and knives, targeting Jewish civilians at a Brooklyn religious center on October 7, 2024, the one-year anniversary of Hamas’ assault on Israel.

According to federal prosecutors, Khan coordinated the plot with a U.S.-based associate and two undercover law enforcement officers who were posing as extremist operatives. During the planning phase, Khan allegedly shared photographs of a Brooklyn synagogue and expressed his intent to kill as many Jewish civilians as possible. In conversations with the undercover agents, he reportedly declared that the attack would be “the largest on U.S. soil since 9/11.”

U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton condemned the alleged plot, stating: “As alleged, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan attempted to enter the United States to carry out a deadly terrorist attack on a Jewish centre in New York City. He planned to use automatic weapons to kill as many members of our Jewish community as possible, all in support of ISIS.”

The plan was thwarted when Khan divulged his intentions to individuals he believed were co-conspirators but were in fact undercover operatives. The Justice Department confirmed that the early intervention of law enforcement prevented the execution of the attack.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi highlighted the ongoing threat posed by international terror networks, particularly against Jewish communities. “Our Jewish citizens are especially targeted by evil groups like these,” she said. FBI Assistant Director Christopher G. Raia added that Khan’s extradition marks a key step toward holding him accountable: “Khan has been brought to the United States to face justice for his barbaric plot to conduct a mass shooting in New York City.”

Khan now faces charges of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and attempting to commit acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries. If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison.

He is scheduled to make his initial appearance before Chief Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn in Manhattan federal court on 11 June 2025.

Dravidianist and Congress mouthpiece The News Minute had Newslaundry have been indulging in anti-national narratives for quite some time. This is evident from their reporting, the news they select to highlight, and the groups they are associated with. In 2023, the duo joined hands to conduct an event calledCutting South. As seditious as it may sound, the event itself was questionable. If we dig a little bit into the event and its sponsors, alarming details come to the fore, especially in light of the USAID revelations.

The Canadian Connection: A Smoking Gun Contract

At the heart of the scandal is a contract dated 28 February 2023, signed between the Canadian High Commission (Colin Shonk, Counsellor and Head of the Advocacy Program at the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi) and three media entities: Confluence Media, The News Minute (Spunklane Media), and Newslaundry. The agreement, obtained through RTI filings, designates these outlets asProducersof theCutting Southevent held on March 25-26, 2023, at Kochi’s Bolgatty Palace.

Key clauses reveal:

  • Canada contributed CAD 4,000 (₹2.4 lakh) directly to organizers
  • Mandated inclusion of a panel on gender/diversity/climate with a Canadian High Commission speaker

It is alleged that the organizers of the Cutting South event received the sponsorship from Canada without obtaining permission from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

The Cutting South conclave, held in Kochi in March 2023, was primarily sponsored by the Kerala Media Academy, a media institution under the Government of Kerala. While the Kerala Media Academy claimed that ₹44 lakh had been spent on the programme, questions remain about how The News Minute and News Laundry independently entered into an agreement with the Canadian High Commission.

Under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), approval from the Ministry of External Affairs is mandatory before accepting foreign funds. The Union Government has the authority to take action against institutions that receive such funds without adhering to legal protocols. Since Narendra Modi’s government came to power in 2014, FCRA regulations have been tightened, leading to the cancellation of registrations for several organizations found to be receiving foreign funds unlawfully.

The Paper Trail Of Public Funds

Perhaps the most troubling aspect of this investigation is how The News Minute and Newslaundry, along with their partners, managed to secure substantial public funding for their event while maintaining editorial control.

The invitation letter sent to Kerala’s top officials on 12 February 2023, strategically positioned the Kerala Media Academy – an autonomous institution under the Government of Kerala – as merely a “knowledge partner.” Yet RTI responses reveal the Academy spent a staggering ₹44,95,000 (approximately $60,000) of public funds on the event.

The financial relationship appears deliberately obscured. When initially questioned about the expenditure through an RTI request in May 2023, the Academy provided an evasive response, claiming “the process of adjusting the amount of expenses…has not been completed.” Only a year later, in May 2024, did they finally disclose the full financial details.

Meanwhile, The News Minute and Newslaundry, along with Confluence Media, maintained complete “creative and programming control” over the event, as stipulated in their agreement with the Canadian sponsor. This meant that while taxpayer money funded the bulk of the event, these private media entities retained decision-making authority over its content and messaging.

The detailed expense breakdown reveals:

  • ₹8,93,869 for flight tickets
  • ₹5,80,660 for accommodation
  • ₹4,05,591 for food expenses
  • ₹7,48,356 for LED wall, light & sound
  • ₹5,21,580 for decoration, publicity & hall arrangement

The Cutting South event was inaugurated virtually by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Other key attendees included Minister P. Rajeev, who was the Chief Guest, and Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan from the Congress party, who attended as a Special Guest. Kerala Media Academy Chairman R.S. Babu presided over the event. In his virtual address, CM Vijayan claimed that the very existence of the media was under threat.

The invitation letter reveals a deliberate strategy to secure this political protection: “We would also have active participation from representatives from across the entire political spectrum of India.” By framing the event as politically inclusive, the organizers tried to effectively neutralize potential criticism from either the ruling coalition or the opposition.

The Media Ecosystem: Creating Institutional Legitimacy

The News Minute and Newslaundry didn’t operate in isolation. They cultivated institutional legitimacy through partnerships with established media bodies like the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ).

The RTI response dated 17 May 2023, confirms this relationship, stating: “The Kerala Media Academy International Journalism Festival and Photo Festival was organized by KUWJ, NewsLaundry, The News Minute, and Confluence Media at the Town Hall, Ernakulam from 24th to 26th March 2023.”

At the heart of this controversy lies an extraordinary contradiction. Official documents, including invitation letters and a legally binding sponsorship agreement, explicitly name the event as “Cutting South.” Yet when questioned about it over a year later, the government-funded Kerala Media Academy categorically denied ever organizing or participating in any such event.

The evidence is unambiguous. An invitation letter dated 12 February 2023, addressed to Kerala’s Chief Secretary Sri V.P. Joy, clearly states: “Together with Newslaundry and The News Minute we at Confluence Media, are organizing Cutting South, a celebration of journalism that will bring together leading news professionals from across the world to Kerala. Kerala Media Academy is the knowledge partner for the event.”

This isn’t just some passing reference. Yet in an official explanation dated 13 August 2024, the Kerala Media Academy brazenly claims: “The Media Academy has not organized an event called Cutting South or participated in any such event.” Instead, they insist they organized an “International Journalism Festival & Photo Festival” on the exact same dates.

By partnering with KUWJ, The News Minute and Newslaundry gained additional credibility and access to established media networks in Kerala. The Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), a collaborator in the event, has previously defended Siddique Kappan, a journalist arrested under UAPA for allegedly inciting unrest. This association suggests a troubling alignment with groups that challenge India’s legal and constitutional framework. This partnership strategy helped transform what might otherwise have been seen as an event organized by digital media platforms into something with institutional backing from traditional journalism organizations.

It is noteworthy that the then governor’s office issued a statement that they were not aware of such an event and did not consent to participate.

The statement read, “It is noted that one organization namely “Cutting South”, not known to the Hon’ble Governor, is organizing a function for the celebration/felicitation of Neither Raj some important persons at Cochin on March 25, 2023. Neither Raj Bhavan, nor Hon’ble Governor has given consent for the participation in the programme. It is, therefore, informed that such an organization is strange to Hon’ble Governor and hence, in no way connected with His Excellency.”

Even before its launch, the Cutting South conclave had sparked controversy. Allegations emerged that the event was promoting the idea that southern states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana should break away from India Initially, the organizers sought to involve high-profile personalities in the program, but once the separatist agenda was exposed, many withdrew. Amid rising controversy, the Kerala Media Academy attempted to rebrand the event as the Global Media Summit to deflect criticism.

During his speech, CM Pinarayi Vijayan referred to the program as Global South rather than Cutting South, a change observers believe was influenced by intelligence reports warning about the nature of the event.

Before “Speaking Truth To Power”, How About Being Truthful First?

The Cutting South event, backed by The News Minute and Newslaundry, exposes a disturbing mix of foreign influence, media manipulation, and political deception. Their secret deal with the Canadian High Commission, allegedly without FCRA approval, and the ₹44 lakh in taxpayer money funneled through the Kerala Media Academy, raise serious red flags. Despite public funding, these media outlets retained full control over the event’s agenda, shaping discussions that many believe carried a divisive, separatist undertone. The Kerala Media Academy’s flip-flop—first funding the event, then denying any role—only adds to the suspicion. The last-minute rebranding from Cutting South to Global South, along with intelligence warnings, suggests an attempt to cover up the event’s true intent after facing public scrutiny.

This isn’t just about a shady media conclave—it’s about the bigger problem of journalists masquerading as neutral voices while pushing hidden agendas. The Modi government’s crackdown on FCRA violations has already exposed many such cases, and The News Minute and Newslaundry shouldn’t be exceptions if they broke the law. What’s equally concerning is the mainstream media’s silence—why aren’t they questioning this? The ones who claim to fight for press freedom and democracy seem suspiciously quiet when their own are in the hot seat. This entire episode serves as a stark reminder that not all journalists are independent truth-seekers—some are just well-funded mouthpieces for foreign interests, selling narratives to the highest bidder.

The recent controversy sparked by Sadie Crowell’s derogatory comments about an Indian wedding in Canada has reignited debates around cultural intolerance, systemic racism, and the essence of multiculturalism in Canadian society. Beyond the immediate controversy, this incident presents an opportunity to reflect on Canada’s deeper historical context as an occupied territory and the cultural parallels between Indigenous communities and immigrant traditions, particularly Indian culture.

Canada: An Occupied Territory

Canada, as it stands today, is a nation built on lands that historically belonged to Indigenous tribes. Before European colonisation, the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples lived across these lands for thousands of years. The arrival of European settlers brought displacement, cultural erasure, and marginalization of Indigenous communities. Treaties were often violated or manipulated, and Indigenous peoples were forced onto reserves, their land and resources exploited in the name of progress. To this day, many Indigenous communities face systemic disadvantages, including poverty, inadequate healthcare, and lack of access to clean drinking water.

The irony of a Canadian citizen criticizing a cultural celebration such as an Indian wedding becomes stark when one considers that the very land on which she lives was forcibly taken from its original stewards. Indigenous cultures are deeply rooted in communal celebrations, music, dance, and rituals that resemble Indian traditions. Yet, Indigenous expressions of culture were suppressed under colonial rule, much like the racism and intolerance faced by immigrant communities today.

Cultural Parallels: Indigenous And Indian Traditions

Both Indigenous and Indian cultures share a profound connection to communal living, respect for nature, and vibrant celebratory practices. Traditional Indigenous powwows, for instance, involve music, drumming, and dancing, which are central to their community’s identity and spirituality. Similarly, Indian weddings are a reflection of familial bonds, spirituality, and joy, often expressed through music, dance, and rituals.

Both cultures value community over individuality, which can be misinterpreted as disruptive or noisy in Western societies. This misunderstanding stems from a Eurocentric worldview that prioritizes silence and individualism, often at the expense of community cohesion and cultural expression. The Indian wedding that Crowell criticized is not just a social event but a deeply spiritual and cultural milestone, much like many Indigenous ceremonies that were historically banned or stigmatized by colonial authorities.

Multiculturalism Under Scrutiny

Canada prides itself on being a multicultural society, yet incidents like this reveal the fragility of that ideal. For multiculturalism to thrive, it must go beyond tolerance to embrace genuine acceptance and respect for diverse traditions. Crowell’s comments and the support they received highlight a troubling trend of xenophobia disguised as concerns about noise or disruption. These attitudes ignore the contributions of immigrants to Canada’s social, cultural, and economic fabric while perpetuating a narrative of “otherness.”

The criticism of Indian weddings—or any cultural practice—must be contextualized within Canada’s colonial history. The land belongs to Indigenous peoples, whose traditions were once seen as disruptive and uncivilized by colonizers. Today, similar labels are applied to immigrant communities, exposing a cyclical pattern of marginalization. Instead of perpetuating division and racism, Canada has an opportunity to foster a society that celebrates cultural diversity as a strength, rather than a source of conflict.

Incidents like this should serve as a wake-up call for Canadians to educate themselves about the histories and contributions of both Indigenous peoples and immigrant communities. Recognizing Canada as an occupied territory should inspire greater empathy for those who bring their traditions to these lands. By embracing the shared values of community, spirituality, and celebration found in both Indigenous and immigrant cultures, Canada can truly live up to its multicultural promise.

It is only by addressing these underlying issues—the legacy of colonialism, systemic racism, and cultural intolerance—that Canada can move towards a more inclusive and harmonious society. The conversation must shift from division to understanding, from exclusion to celebration, and from ignorance to respect.

Toronto police arrested Jewish journalist Ezra Levant of Rebel News during a pro-Hamas rally in a predominantly Jewish neighbourhood at Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue. Levant was covering a weekly anti-Israel counter-protest when police ordered him to move away from the rally, citing that his presence was “inciting the crowd.”

Levant refused, alleging discrimination and stating, “I’m refusing to leave because I’m a Jew, and I’m a citizen.” Officers informed him he was under arrest for “breaching the peace.” Protesters cheered during the arrest, shouting slurs like “Zionist” and “loser.”

Levant, in a video posted by Rebel News, condemned the decision to arrest him while allowing demonstrators supporting Hamas—a banned terrorist organization—to remain. He likened the actions of a protester role-playing slain Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in the neighborhood to someone dressing as Adolf Hitler in an area home to Holocaust survivors. He criticized the police for allegedly prioritizing foreign provocateurs over a journalist’s right to report.

Levant described the incident as “outrageous,” noting it was his first-ever arrest. As police escorted him away, several bystanders shouted, “Shame, let go of him.” Levant has called on authorities, including the mayor, to address the incident, questioning why peaceful citizens are removed while supporters of a terror group can dominate public spaces.

Peel Regional Police are facing criticism for the blatant bias after recent arrests related to demonstrations at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, Canada. On 8 November 2024, Peel Police released a video update announcing additional arrests and charges after incidents at the temple on November 3 and 4. However, questions have been raised over the police’s handling of the situation, with accusations that the enforcement actions disproportionately targeted Hindu individuals while overlooking alleged provocations by pro-Khalistani supporters.

According to the Peel Regional Police, tensions initially escalated during a “demonstration” at the Hindu Sabha Temple on 3 November 2024, with further confrontations occurring the following day. Officer Tyler Bell-Morena, speaking on behalf of the Peel Police, stated that the 4 November 2024 event saw “hundreds gathered, many of which were armed with weapons.” He also noted that circulating videos captured “several offences,” including an individual allegedly using a loudspeaker to incite violence against Sikh temples.

Subsequently, on 6 November 2024, police arrested 57-year-old Ranendra Lal Banerjee of Toronto, charging him with public incitement of hatred, citing Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada. Banerjee was released with conditions and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

Additionally, Peel Police issued arrest warrants for two other individuals involved in the November 4 demonstration. Twenty-four-year-old Armaan Gahlot of Kitchener and 22-year-old Arpit (no surname) of no fixed address face charges including uttering threats, conspiracy to commit assault with a weapon, and conspiracy to commit mischief.

Despite these actions, critics argue that Peel Police’s response has been one-sided, with no arrests made among pro-Khalistani demonstrators, despite allegations of violence and threats against Hindu community members. Videos shared widely on social media reportedly show individuals carrying swords and issuing threats at the November 3 event. Additionally, accusations have surfaced regarding Peel Police officers allegedly supporting pro-Khalistani demonstrators and failing to protect Hindu attendees during the clashes.

These allegations have led some to question the obvious partiality of Peel Police, – the department has targeted Hindu youth while pro-Khalistani demonstrators face no repercussions. Critics further point out that no arrests have been made following past incidents involving threats against Indian diplomats or displays of anti-India sentiment, which some view as incitement to violence.

Peel Police has formed a Strategic Investigative Team to review all criminal incidents from the November 3 and 4 events. In their statement, police reiterated their commitment to upholding peaceful protests, while firmly condemning violence, threats, and vandalism.

The blatant bias in the handling of recent events has prompted calls for accountability.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Working President Balwinder Singh Bhunder on Tuesday condemned incidents of violence outside religious places in Canada and appealed to people of Indian origin to defeat the conspiracies to divide them on communal lines.

He called upon the Canadian government to ensure all places of religious worship were secure from such acts of violence. “Attempts are afoot to divide Sikhs and Hindus in Canada on communal lines. This is against the teachings of our Guru Sahiban who have preached the concept of ‘sarbat da bhala’,” said Balwinder Singh Bhunder. The Akali Dal has always stood for communal harmony and has also made numerous sacrifices to uphold this principle.

The Shiromani Akali Dal head appealed to people from both communities in Canada to recognise their common roots, exercise utmost restraint and maintain communal harmony at this critical juncture. Bhunder also appealed to the Canadian government to ensure the safety of all persons of Indian origin as well as the safety of their places of worship. “Everyone should have the right to free access to their religious places. It appears these acts of violence have been engineered as part of a larger conspiracy. The Canadian government should unmask the conspiracy behind these incidents,” he said.

The SAD Working President also urged the Canadian government to ensure the safety of Indian diplomats on Canadian soil. He also urged the Indian government to take necessary steps to ensure the safety of Indo-Canadians and make attempts at genuine reconciliation amongst both communities. Responding to the incidents, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar has expressed concern over the attack on a Hindu temple in Brampton, Canada, calling it “deeply concerning” during a press conference with his Australian counterpart Penny Wong at Parliament House, Canberra, on Tuesday.

“What happened yesterday at the Hindu temple in Canada was obviously deeply concerning. And, you would have seen the statement first by the official spokesperson and also the expression of concern by the Prime Minister yesterday. So, that should, I think, convey to you how deeply we feel about it,” Jaishankar said.
