An imam at a Brisbane Mosque has delivered a strongly worded sermon condemning terrorism carried out in the name of Islam, urging Muslims to actively challenge extremist views within their own communities and acknowledging the restraint shown by Australian society in the aftermath of violent attacks.

Speaking at the Holland Park Mosque, Imam Uzair Akbar reflected on his upbringing in Pakistan and contrasted societal responses there with those in Australia. He stated that Pakistan, while a Muslim-majority country, was not an Islamic state, and noted that religious minorities there often faced collective punishment for acts they did not commit.

Referring to a hypothetical scenario similar to the Bondi Beach terror attack, the imam said that if members of a non-Muslim minority were responsible for such violence in Pakistan, entire communities would face reprisals, including arson and killings. He stressed that such incidents were not theoretical but had occurred in the past.

By contrast, he said Muslims in Australia, despite being a minority, continued to live freely, conduct their businesses, and worship openly even after violent acts committed by individuals claiming to act in the name of Islam. He credited Australian society for showing restraint and tolerance and urged congregants to acknowledge this.

The imam also directly addressed accusations that Muslim leaders who speak against extremism are “selling out” or seeking approval. Rejecting such claims, he said confronting radicalism was necessary to protect human dignity and the moral standing of Islam itself.

Warning against silence, he urged Muslims to challenge extremist sentiments whenever they encountered them within their social circles. He said ignoring such views or “brushing them under the carpet” would allow further radicalisation and lead to more acts of violence. He questioned how many such “monsters,” as he described extremists, society could continue to tolerate.

Concluding his address, Imam Uzair Akbar called for prayer for Australia’s continued peace and prosperity and appealed for the eradication of all ideologies, whether held by Muslims or non-Muslims, that violate human dignity and mutual respect.
