The Supreme Court on Monday, 17 November 2025, dismissed a petition seeking restoration of civilian access to the Masjid-E-Aalishaan, a mosque located within the military quarters in Chennai, ruling that security considerations outweigh the demand for public entry.

A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta refused to interfere with the April 2025 decision of a Madras High Court division bench, which had upheld the Army’s administrative order restricting civilians from entering the mosque.

“How can we allow that?” Supreme Court declines plea

During the hearing, counsel for the petitioner argued that civilians had been permitted to offer prayers at the mosque since 1877 and that restrictions were imposed only during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Supreme Court was, however, unconvinced.

The Bench remarked, “There are security issues and so many things. How can we allow that?” while rejecting the special leave petition.

Army’s decision upheld by High Court earlier

Before the High Court, the petitioner had contended that the Army abruptly discontinued civilian access without valid justification. The division bench, however, pointed to the Station Commander’s communication in June 2021, where the request for entry was verbally declined and it was clarified that:

  • The mosque is primarily meant for Army personnel
  • Outsiders cannot be allowed inside under the Cantonment Land Administration Rules, 1937

The High Court held that decisions concerning access to a sensitive Defence installation fall squarely within the Army administration’s discretion and refused to intervene.

Supreme Court affirms the High Court’s reasoning

Agreeing with this view, the Supreme Court dismissed the plea and reaffirmed that security concerns govern entry into cantonment spaces.

The ruling effectively maintains the Army’s restrictions on civilian entry to Masjid-E-Aalishaan, bringing an end to the petitioner’s challenge.

The Supreme Court is examining whether a Christian Army officer’s refusal to perform a temple ritual constitutes legitimate religious expression or an unforgivable breach of military protocol that warrants termination.

The case concerns Lieutenant Samuel Kamalesan, who was dismissed from service after he declined to enter the inner sanctum of his regiment’s temple to perform aarti during a ceremonial duty. The officer, attached to the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, argued that participating in the ritual would violate his monotheistic Christian faith.

The Troubling Precedent of Personal Belief Over Military Order

What makes this case particularly consequential is the challenge it poses to the fundamental principle of military hierarchy. The Delhi High Court, while upholding Kamalesan’s termination, delivered a stark warning: “Keeping one’s religion above a lawful command from a superior officer is an act of indiscipline.”

The military’s position is unambiguous – the Army cannot function as a democracy where soldiers pick and choose which orders to follow based on personal belief. Regimental rituals, whether religious or ceremonial, serve the crucial purpose of building unit cohesion and morale. When an officer distances himself from these practices, he risks alienating himself from the troops he must lead into battle.

Why This Case Should Concern Every Indian

This legal battle raises troubling questions about the future of military discipline in an increasingly individualistic society. The Armed Forces have historically operated on the principle that personal beliefs must yield to institutional requirements when national security is at stake.

The case reveals several alarming implications:

The Erosion of Command Authority: If soldiers can refuse orders based on religious grounds, it sets a dangerous precedent that could compromise operational effectiveness. As the High Court noted, hesitation in peace could become fatal hesitation in war.

Selective Obedience: The military functions on absolute obedience, not negotiated compliance. Today it’s a temple ritual; tomorrow it could be a soldier refusing to fire because his religion prohibits killing, or another refusing to handle certain equipment due to dietary restrictions.

Undermining Regimental Culture: Army regiments often draw strength from shared traditions and rituals. The 3rd Cavalry maintains both a temple and gurdwara, reflecting its composition of Sikh, Jat, and Rajput troops. Allowing individual exceptions could fragment this carefully maintained unity.

The Constitutional Dilemma

The Supreme Court, led by Justice Surya Kant, must balance Article 25’s guarantee of religious freedom against Article 33, which specifically allows Parliament to restrict fundamental rights of Armed Forces personnel to ensure proper discharge of duties and maintenance of discipline.

This isn’t merely about religious rights; it’s about whether any personal belief can override the military’s operational requirements. The Army’s argument is compelling: in uniform, the only deity is duty, and the only religion is service to the nation.

A Warning from Recent History

The timing of this case is particularly significant given the Indian military’s recent operational successes, including the spectacular triumph during Operation Sindoor. These victories were achieved precisely because of the unquestioning discipline and unity that characterizes our Armed Forces.

If the Supreme Court rules in favor of individual religious exceptions, it could fundamentally alter the character of the world’s second-largest standing army. The military’s strength has always lain in its ability to transcend individual differences in service of a common national purpose.

In the wake of devastating flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army swiftly responded by constructing a Bailey bridge over the Jangalwar stream on National Highway 244, restoring connectivity to the Doda and Kishtwar districts on 2 September 2025.

This report compiles 13 major rescue and relief operations carried out by the Indian Army in 2025, where troops responded swiftly to floods, landslides, cloudbursts, and other disasters across multiple states of Bharat, saving thousands of lives and restoring vital connectivity.

#1 Army Restores Connectivity in Ramban, J&K

In the wake of devastating flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army swiftly responded by constructing a Bailey bridge over the Jangalwar stream on National Highway 244, restoring connectivity to the Doda and Kishtwar districts on 2 September 2025. The washed-away road portion had cut off strategic national projects and vital highways, severely impacting the movement of essential supplies. Army engineers from the White Knight Corps mobilized bridging equipment and executed the mission under challenging conditions, ensuring remote communities regained access to crucial resources and transportation routes.

#2 Bailey Bridge Constructed In 12 Hrs Over Tawi River

On 29 August 2025, after a section of the ₹147 crore fourth bridge collapsed in Jammu due to heavy rains, the Indian Army demonstrated remarkable efficiency by building a 110-foot Bailey bridge within 12 hours. The soldiers, belonging to the Rising Star Corps, launched multiple concurrent rescue missions with assistance from Army and IAF helicopters, evacuating nearly 1,000 people, including children and paramilitary personnel. These concerted efforts rapidly reestablished key communication links between Jammu and Srinagar at a critical time.

#3 Amphibious Vehicle Rescue in Punjab

Severe flooding in Punjab saw the Indian Army deploying the advanced ATOR N1200 amphibious vehicles on 28 August 2025, to rescue civilians stranded in submerged villages. Manufactured in collaboration between JSW Gecko Motors and Copato, these vehicles enabled access to isolated pockets unreachable by conventional means. Army and NDRF teams used this technology to move villagers to safety, exemplifying effective collaboration between Indian innovation and military efficiency during natural calamities.

#4 Gangotri Highway Reopens After Disaster

After a destructive flood submerged a critical segment of the Gangotri National Highway between Harsil and Dharali, the Indian Army and the Border Roads Organisation worked tirelessly to clear debris and install Hume pipes. Their efforts allowed vehicular movement to Gangotri Dham to resume by 30 August 2025—24 days after the highway became impassable. The reopening reconnected pilgrims and locals, underscoring the army’s pivotal role in restoring mobility in disaster-stricken areas.

#5 Pilgrims Rescued at Machail Mata Temple

Following a deadly cloudburst in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, on 17 August 2025, Indian Army personnel, alongside disaster response teams, swiftly rescued pilgrims stranded at the Machail Mata temple. The catastrophe claimed at least 55 lives, but the Army’s rapid mobilization led troops to the scene within 45 minutes, enabling them to save lives under hazardous conditions. Timely medical and logistical support were provided to the survivors in this remote location.

#6 Air Operations Evacuate Thousands

On August 16 and 17, 2025, Indian Army aviation undertook over 250 hours of sorties using Mi-17s, a Chinook, and other aircraft to rescue more than 5,000 civilians and 300 paramilitary personnel from flood-affected regions in Punjab, Jammu, and Himachal Pradesh. Forty-seven army columns collaborated closely with civil authorities, NDRF, and SDRF to evacuate the stranded, airdrop 21 tonnes of relief materials, restore communications, and lay a critical Bailey bridge at Jammu Tawi, proving the army’s comprehensive disaster management capabilities.

#7 Army Responds Swiftly in Arunachal Valley

After a catastrophic landslide, triggered by a cloudburst on the night of August 16-17, 2025, Indian Army troops under the Spear Corps teamed with the Civil Administration in Angrim Valley, Arunachal Pradesh. Battling treacherous terrain, the teams conducted immediate rescue and relief operations, delivering essential aid and rekindling hope amidst devastation. Their prompt courage and teamwork minimized casualties and initiated the rebuilding of affected communities.

#8 Uttarkashi Cloudburst: Rapid Army Response

Responding to the severe cloudburst that struck Dharali village in Uttarkashi on 5 August 2025, the Indian Army’s IBEX Brigade launched immediate rescue operations in rugged, debris-laden terrain. The troops successfully rescued more than 550 civilians, providing emergency medical care and evacuation services. Their swift intervention amidst landslides was crucial in safeguarding lives and mitigating the disaster’s impact in the flood-hit region.

#9 Boy Airlifted from Flooded River in Rajouri

In a dramatic operation on 23 July 2025, an Army helicopter rescued a minor boy trapped atop a rock in a flooded Rajouri river in Jammu and Kashmir. The joint mission involved the Indian Army, SDRF, local police, and civilian divers braving adverse weather and dangerous currents. The successful airlift showcased close cooperation among agencies and highlighted the valor of the 662 Army Aviation Squadron deployed from the White Knight Corps.

#10 Operation SHIVA: Safeguarding Amarnath Yatra

Following heavy rain and a landslide along the Baltal route in July 2025, the Indian Army played a vital role in ‘Operation SHIVA’ to ensure the safety of Amarnath Yatra pilgrims in Kashmir. The army responded promptly, providing food, medical assistance, and essential support to hundreds stranded by washed-out roads. Their intervention rescued over 500 pilgrims, emphasizing the military’s commitment to protecting lives during religious events affected by natural disasters.

#11 Vital Himachal Track Cleared for Relief

Between July 6 and 11, 2025, the Indian Army, working alongside SDRF, NDRF, and local authorities, restored crucial access in Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh. Floodwaters had isolated several villages, but army columns delivered relief material, set up medical camps, and distributed rations. Aid reached areas like Degi, Rushad, and Chapad, ensuring essential supplies continued to vulnerable populations despite challenging conditions.

#12 Massive Rescue Across Northeast India

From May 31 to June 3, 2025, Indian Army, Air Force, Assam Rifles, and multiple agencies executed ‘Operation Jal Rahat-II’ across Manipur, Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh after floods and landslides severed communication. Over 1,560 civilians were rescued from isolated communities, with dedicated medical camps, food, and water supplied to relief centers. The army’s well-coordinated efforts ensured the safety and support of affected populations during this widespread humanitarian crisis.

#13 Avalanche Response in Uttarakhand

On February 28, 2025, a massive avalanche struck a Border Roads Organisation camp in Mana, Uttarakhand. Indian Army troops from the IBEX Brigade undertook a dangerous and determined rescue operation, saving 46 people amidst harsh weather and challenging terrain. Despite their best efforts, eight lives were lost. The operation demonstrated the army’s bravery, resilience, and unwavering commitment under the most adverse circumstances.

Two Indian Army soldiers were martyred and 2 others injured in the protracted Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) anti-terror operation in the Akhal Devsar forest area of Kulgam district, which entered the 9th day on Saturday. An Army spokesperson said on Saturday,

“Two Army soldiers succumbed, and two others were injured as the exchange of fire between terrorists and security forces continued throughout last night, as the gunfight entered its ninth day in the Akhal forest area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.”

Four Army soldiers were injured in an intense exchange of fire between terrorists and security forces late last night. However, two among the four injured armymen succumbed to their injuries. The deceased soldiers have been identified as Constable, Harminder Singh and Lance Naik, Preetpal Singh both from 19 Rashtriya Rifles (RR).

Army’s Srinagar headquartered Chinar Corps said on X, “Chinar Corps honours the supreme sacrifice of the Bravehearts, L/Nk Pritpal Singh and Sep Harminder Singh, in line of duty for the Nation. “Their courage and dedication will forever inspire us. Indian Army expresses deepest condolences and stands in solidarity with the bereaved families.”

Notably, this operation is the longest ongoing operation in the Valley entering its ninth day. On the first night of the gunfight on last Friday, one local terrorist was killed, and four Army soldiers were injured.

Officials said that since this is a vast, dense forest area, the operation may be prolonged. This longest anti-terrorist operation J&K in the last two decades entered its 9th day on Saturday. J&K DGP, Nalin Prabhat has been supervising the operation in close synergy with the Army and the CRPF. He visited the area for the 5th time on Friday. Joint forces, including the Indian Army, CRPF and J&K Police had started CASO (Cordon & Search Operations) in the area on last Friday.

The Army has deployed Rudra helicopters, drones and Para commandos to ensure that the hiding terrorists are unable to escape. Security forces have been carrying out aggressive operations against the terrorists in the hinterland while the Army has been on maximum alert guarding the Line of Control (LoC) in J&K.

The elimination of three hardcore Pakistani terrorists responsible for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed, is part of the aggressive operations being carried out by the joint forces.

Three hardcore Pakistani terrorists including LeT commander, Suleman Shah and his two associates Abu Hamza and Jibran Bhai responsible for Pahalgam attack were killed on July 28 in the higher reaches of Dachigam national park on the foot of Mahadev Mountain peak in Harwan area of Srinagar. The Army code named this operation as ‘Operation Mahadev’.

After the Pahalgam terror attack, the security forces are carrying out anti-terrorist operations against gun wielding terrorists, their over ground workers and sympathisers. Drug smugglers and drug peddlers are also on the radar of the security forces because it is believed that the funds generated by hawala money racket and drug smuggling are finally used to sustain terrorism in J&K.

The coordinated and Intelligence-backed operations of the joint forces are aimed at dismantling the ecosystem of terrorism in J&K rather than focussing on just the elimination of the gun-wielding terrorists.

A few days ago, a video of a violent altercation between an Indian Army officer and SpiceJet ground staff at Srinagar Airport triggered public outrage and sparked the social media trend #BoycottSpiceJet, as conflicting versions of the incident continue to emerge.

The confrontation, partially captured on video and now widely circulated online, reportedly occurred over a dispute about excess cabin baggage. According to SpiceJet’s official complaint, the army officer attempted to carry 16 kg of hand baggage, well above the permitted limit, and allegedly refused to pay for the excess weight. The airline accused the officer of assaulting four staff members, claiming one suffered a spinal fracture while another sustained facial injury.

However, alternative accounts have surfaced challenging this version. Eyewitnesses quoted in multiple reports alleged that the officer was carrying only 8 to 9 kg in cabin baggage, which had already been cleared at check-in. They stated that he was traveling on emergency family leave and that tensions escalated only after he was allegedly mocked by SpiceJet staff and subsequently denied boarding when the gate was shut on him.

Following the denial, the officer allegedly punched a staff member. In response, multiple airline employees are reported to have assaulted him. During the scuffle, the officer was seen picking up a queue divider, reportedly in self-defence. The incident reportedly occurred on 26 July 2025, 9 days prior to the video surfacing.

After the footage gained traction online, SpiceJet filed an FIR and reportedly urged that the officer be blacklisted from flying. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which handles airport security, has stated that it will take appropriate action following the investigation.

The Indian Army issued a statement emphasizing that it upholds the highest standards of discipline and is cooperating fully with the inquiry. However, the incident has prompted a wave of criticism on social media, especially from army veterans and supporters who accuse SpiceJet of disrespecting and mishandling a serving officer.

However, airline staff being rude is not an uncommon occurrance, especially with SpiceJet. The airline was once owned by the relatives of the DMK first family – Kalanidhi Maran.

Let us take a look at few other instances of rude staff behaviour of the same airlines. Many of these instances go unreported, so in this report we bring to you instances that have appeared online on social medla.

Just this week, a netizen shared his experience during check-in. He wrote, Worst customer service experience with @flyspicejet staff at the gate. Intimidating and rude behavior by the manager and team during check-in for flight SG 0184 (DEL–CCU). Truly unacceptable.”

He further added, “To make things worse, the staff was blatantly lying to passengers during boarding. Despite people complying with early boarding requests, there was zero courtesy shown. Mr. Chandra Kishor Zha (Employee ID: 127981) was especially rude and disrespectful.”

In December 2024, a netizen shared his experience with SpiceJet. He wrote, SpiceJet Money Extortion by exploiting loopholes in Aviation policies. 1. Reached 15 mins late to the check-in counter 2. Bear with nonsense rude behavior of SpiceJet staff 3. Had to pay 17.5k to board with my entire luggage as hand luggage #AirSewa @MoCA_GoI @flyspicejet 4. Entire Hand luggage is taken as Check-in Luggage upon boarding. 5. Flight takes of 15 mins late. So if you’re 15 mins late to counter – You pay double the fare of ticket extra to just board. But @flyspicejet rescheduling flights and taking off late has no impact. @MoCA_GoI

Earlier in June 2025, a passenger mentioned that he had to weigh his laptop bag because SpiceJet demanded it. He wrote, In 25 years of flying, I’ve never had to weigh my laptop bag — until @flyspicejet. Rude staff, exorbitant extra charge for hand baggage, and constantly changing flight time. Absolute mess. Never flying SpiceJet again. Looting customers in broad daylight.”

An entrepreneur noted how SpiceJet resorted to extortion just yesterday. He wrote, I am at airport and SpiceJet is harassing people here also. They took extra charge from me also even when I didn’t have any check-in baggage. I don’t know how the fuck this airline is still operating when they harass hundreds of people on daily basis!!@MoCA_GoI”

Here’s another instance of poor behaviour of staff, overcharging and poor condition of the aircraft. The netizen wrote, Just took a flight from @flyspicejet on SG 2473.Absolute horrendous experience. Flight delayed by almost 2hrs, rude staff and stupid charges just before boarding for hand baggages. On the top of that, no air conditioning in flight. Felt like literal hell. Never ever fly spicejet”

Another netizen narrated an instance where the staff are apparently weighing the baggage even after successful check-in. He wrote, I had a similar bad experince with SpiceJet staff and can confirm that they indeed act like “Gunda Gang” at the airport mutiple times even after successful checkin at the counters carrying their weight machines around just to harass people and extract money out of them. @flyspicejet should shut down operations, i think it isn’t their cup of tea to run an airlines company!”

Here is another netizen confirming how the staff have been indulging in this kind of behaviour. He wrote, “Msg recd from one of the travellers from Srinagar.. SpiceJet staff of Srinagar Airlines is just so rude ! They had this coming I faced a similar issue They run a scam where they let the passengers first go through security and then check weights of hand bags at the gate… it wouldn’t matter if you have just 10 kgs in your check in bags They will charge you extra I paid 3k extra at the boarding gate and at the same time a Hav who too was travelling on the same airline was asked to pay 18k or they wouldn’t let him board the flight Though at that time the matter was resolved as there were too many faujis and we spoke to them and the charges were reduced to 3k But still Gundagardi is still on I would say… SpiceJet had it coming..”

SpiceJet staff even harassed a pregnant woman over baggage weight. A netizen shared her friend’s experience saying, “Spice Jet staff totally deserves it, they harassed one of my pregnant friends over 700gm extra weight in check in luggage while she had no hand luggage due to her medical condition was traveling alone but they were so aggressive and annoying she had no choice to remove some clothes and carry in hand”

Here are some other incidents of rude behaviour.

On 11 July 2025 at Jaipur Airport, a crew member assaulted an ASI (Assistant Sub-Inspector) of the CISF. The officer was simply doing his job by preventing the SpiceJet ground staff entry through a gate that the crew member was not authorized to use. In response, the crew member slapped the security officer. This incident received significant media attention at that time.

In May 2025, a Spicefjet flight was delayed by 2-3 hrs and no update or information was provided. Additionally, the netizen indicated the rude behaviour of the staff.

Here is another video of rude staff behaviour from June 2025.

Here is a video from November 2022 where elderly people with medical issues were on the flight. The flight was delayed by 6 hours – they were flying from Guwahati to Jaipur. The flight was repeatedly rescheduled with no prior intimation on time and the staff was very rude.

In June 2025, passengers traveling from Mumbai to Gorakhpur faced major inconvenience as the SpiceJet flight was cancelled without proper assistance. Shockingly, the airline staff’s rude behavior only added to the distress. The flight was rescheduled for the next day and left the passengers disappointed.

A post shared by LocalTak™ (@localtak)

A netizen shared his experience from 2023 on Reddit. He wrote that a few months ago, he missed a SpiceJet flight from Mumbai after their system failed to issue his web check-in boarding pass. Despite arriving an hour early with no check-in luggage, customer care tried to upsell him a paid seat to release the pass. At the airport, staff refused to help or prioritize his case, and the manager dismissed him, saying, “File a grievance if you want.” So he did, through the AirSewa portal, naming the manager. Within days, he got an apology, and two months later, a refund. SpiceJet’s service was abysmal, but at least they were held accountable because the passenger filed a complaint.

In a video from 2021, SpiceJet ground staff are seen responding rudely and dismissively to frustrated passengers after a flight cancellation. Instead of calmly explaining the situation, the staff member is seen talking over passengers, mocking their concerns, and repeatedly using the word “loot” sarcastically. When asked for clarity, the staff avoided direct answers, shows no empathy, and creates further confusion. Passengers expressed frustration over poor communication and felt cheated. The overall tone of the staff was unprofessional, provoking anger among passengers already inconvenienced by the cancellation.

SpiceJet is not a newly rude airline, they have been exhibiting such behaviour ever since they were launched it seems – that is what this TripAdvisor account from 14 years ago tells us. The passenger stated that their experience with SpiceJet at Chennai airport was absolutely horrible. The staff showed no understanding of customer service, especially during a delay that was entirely their fault. Instead of helping, they were rude and made the family rush around the airport unnecessarily. One staff member, in particular, was shockingly unprofessional and disrespectful. If they had handled the delay with basic courtesy, the passenger admits that they might not have complained. Sadly, their behavior was disgraceful and embarrassing.

A LinkedIn post from 2017 also tells us about the habitual rude behaviour of SpiceJet airline staff. The LinkedIn member traveling from Hyderabad to Vijayawada reported that SpiceJet staff refused to issue a boarding pass despite him arriving 40 minutes before departure. He explained that he had tried web check-in but the site was down. Despite acknowledging he was late, he requested assistance due to an urgent meeting, but staff remained uncooperative. One executive allegedly told him to “do whatever you want” and initially denied boarding, only relenting after a heated exchange.

These are just a few instances of SpiceJet’s staff behaviour towards passengers, and they have been consistently bad.

On 5 November 2024, members of the Hindu community in Hazari Goli, Chittagong, were subjected to violent actions by police and law enforcement authorities after staging a protest against a local trader. The trader, Osman Mollah, had made derogatory remarks about ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) and Sanatana Dharma, sparking outrage among local Hindus.

The protest took place outside Mollah’s shop, where community members gathered to express their anger. Instead of taking legal action against the trader, law enforcement took Mollah into “safe custody.” However, reports indicate that the police, along with army officials, later turned their focus on the protesting Hindus. Eyewitnesses have shared disturbing images showing a joint team of security forces hunting down members of the Hindu community.

Authorities have justified their actions by alleging that the protesters threw bricks and acid at the police, but reports suggest that this was an effort to rationalize the crackdown. At least five Hindus were injured during the assault, and around 30 members of the minority community were detained. Disturbing footage also surfaced showing law enforcement destroying CCTV cameras in an apparent attempt to cover up their actions.

The violence continued into the night, with local residents recording videos of the ongoing assault by police and army personnel.

Alleged Blasphemy Incident Escalates Tensions In Faridpur

This incident follows a similar escalation in the Faridpur district, where a Muslim mob attacked a Hindu student after accusing him of blasphemy. The incident took place at Kadirdi Degree College in Boalmari, where a Class XI student, Hridoy Pal, was accused of insulting Prophet Muhammad in a Facebook post. The student denied ownership of the post, explaining that his social media account had been hacked two years ago.

The mob, consisting of madrassa students, gathered outside the college and demanded that the administration hand over the accused student. The situation grew tense as the mob vandalized property and motorcycles. The local police responded, and political leaders intervened to calm the mob. However, to prevent further violence, the army was called in, and they took the student into custody.

A troubling video emerged showing Hridoy Pal blindfolded and being carried by army personnel, with members of the mob slapping and encouraging further abuse. In the video, one army official is seen hitting the student with a stick, while the mob attacked the army with stones and shoes.

Army said on Friday that the Botpathri attack has proved that Pakistan is abetting terrorism in Kashmir. “Pakistani terrorists, with a view to disrupting peace and stability in Kashmir, cowardly targeted an Army column in general area Butapathri, Baramulla on 24 October 2024, which was carrying soldiers and local porters,” a defence ministry statement said. It added that on being fired upon, the alert troops swiftly and resolutely retaliated the fire, forcing the terrorists to retreat leaving behind a weapon and rucksack and escape into dense foliage, exploiting a nala and fading light.

“Regrettably, two brave Indian Army soldiers, one from Anantnag district and the other from Sirsa District succumbed to the injuries sustained during the exchange of fire, thereby making the supreme sacrifice,” it said. The statement added that the Indian Army salutes the bravery of Rifleman Kaisar Ahmad Shah and Rifleman Jeevan Singh, who despite being hit responded and forced the terrorists to flee, before laying down their lives in this cowardly terrorist attack. It said that actions by these brave soldiers prevented the terrorists from causing any further damage and demonstrated unwavering courage and commitment to safeguard the National Security and counter the inimical agenda of Pakistan abetted terrorism in Kashmir. The statement said that their selfless act is a testament to the Indian Army’s resolve to safeguard our nation and citizens.

“Alongside the brave soldiers, two Kashmiri porters Zahoor Ahmad Mir resident of Boniyar Tehsil and Mushtaq Ahmad Choudhary resident of Uri Tehsil also made the ultimate sacrifice, while serving the nation,” it said. The statement added that it is evident that Pakistani terrorists are, deliberately and unregretfully, targeting Kashmiri locals to evoke fear and terror in Valley, which is progressing towards peace and stability. “The only ideology these terrorists espouse is of ‘The Reign of Terror in Valley’,” the defence ministry statement said.

It said that the Indian Army pays tribute to these brave soldiers and porters, who laid down their lives while serving the nation and extend heartfelt condolences to their families. “Indian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our citizens and will resolutely achieve its efforts to combat terrorism and promote harmony in Kashmir Valley. The sacrifices of these brave Kashmiris and Indian Army soldiers will inspire the future generations to stand against the perpetrators of terror,” concluded the defence ministry statement.

The Indian Army and Air Force launched extensive rescue operations this morning in response to a major landslide that struck the Meppadi Panchayath area in Vyithiri Taluk, Wayanad district. The landslide has reportedly stranded approximately 250 people, prompting a swift and coordinated response from the defence forces.

Upon receiving a requisition from the Kerala Government, two rescue columns from the Defence Security Corps (DSC) Centre in Kannur, comprising around 200 soldiers, have been deployed. These troops, a medical team from Military Hospital Kannur, and Territorial Army personnel from Kozhikode are actively involved in the rescue efforts in Wayanad landslide.

The landslide, which struck the hilly regions near Meppadi, has left hundreds of people stranded and urgently needing assistance. In addition to the ground forces, two helicopters from Air Force Station Sulur have been dispatched to aid in the rescue operations despite challenging weather conditions in the affected area.

To lead the rescue operations on the ground, approximately 130 soldiers from the 23 Maratha Regiment and 2 Madras Regiment, under the command of Capt. Thushar and Capt. Sourabh, respectively, are en route from Trivandrum to Wayanad. To expedite the mission, the Indian Air Force is airlifting the maximum number of team members to Calicut, with the remaining personnel proceeding by road.

The combined efforts of the Indian Army and Air Force demonstrate a robust and rapid response to the disaster, aiming to ensure the safety and rescue of those affected by the landslide.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused Defence Minister Rajnath Singh of misleading Parliament about compensation to families of deceased Agniveers.

On 1 July 2024, Gandhi attacked the government, claiming that Agniveers were not granted the status of martyrs and were akin touse and throwlabour. In response, Singh maintained that if an Agniveer dies in war or at the border, their family receives ₹1 crore.

Gandhi released a video on 3 July 2024 featuring the father of Agniveer Ajay Kumar, who was killed in a landmine explosion in Naushera, Jammu & Kashmir, in January. The father claimed that the family had not received any compensation or help from the Centre, despite Singh’s assertion that families of martyred Agniveers receive ₹1 crore in compensation. The father stated that while they had received some assistance from the Punjab government, nothing had been provided by the central government.

In the video, Gandhi demanded an apology from Singh, saying, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lied in Parliament about the assistance given to the family of the martyred Agniveer. Martyr Agniveer Ajay’s father has himself told the truth and exposed their lies. The Defence Minister should apologise to the Parliament, the country, the army, and the family of the martyr.”

Army’s Rebuttal

Hours after Gandhi’s statement, the Indian Army issued a clarification on social media, asserting that compensation had been paid to Kumar’s family. It is emphasised that the Indian Army salutes the supreme sacrifice made by Agniveer Ajay Kumar. The last rites were carried out with full Military Honours. Of the total amount due, the family of Agniveer Ajay has already been paid ₹98.39 lakhs. Ex-Gratia and other benefits amounting to approximately ₹67 lakhs, as applicable according to the provisions of the Agniveer Scheme, will be paid on Final Account Settlement shortly post due Police verification. The total amount will be ₹1.65 Cr approximately.”

The army reiterated that emoluments due to fallen soldiers, including Agniveers, are paid expeditiously to their next of kin.

Terms Of Agnipath Scheme

The terms of the Agnipath Scheme clearly state that if an Agniveer soldier becomes a battle casualty, his next of kin would receive:

  • Non-Contributory Insurance sum, amounting to ₹48 Lakh
  • Ex-gratia of ₹44 Lakh
  • Seva Nidhi contributed by the Agniveer (30%), with an equal matching contribution by the Govt, and interest thereon
  • Pay of balance tenure from date of death, till completion of four years (more than ₹13 Lakh, in the case of Laxman
  • Contribution of ₹8 Lakh from Armed Forces Battle Casualty Fund
  • Immediate financial assistance of ₹30 thousand from the Army Wives Welfare Association

Defence Minister’s Rebuttal

Defence Minister Singh refuted Gandhi’s claims in Lok Sabha, stating that the Agnipath scheme was introduced after consultations with 158 organizations and that it provides due compensation to the families of martyred Agniveers. He urged Gandhi not to mislead Parliament and requested Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to expunge Gandhi’s remarks on the scheme. Singh also noted that similar recruitment schemes exist in countries like the US and the UK without objections.

This is not the first time that Rahul Gandhi is lying about the Armed Forces. Here are 10 other instances where he and the Congress insulted the Indian Armed Forces.

About Agnipath

Rahul Gandhi had parroted the claims made by the banned terror outfit PFI about the Agnipath Scheme saying that it will create unemployed youths trained in guns, which is similar to what the PFI said – that the scheme is a ploy to train Hindu youths in weapons to attack Muslims.

On OROP

He also tried to create divisions between officers and jawans (soldiers) regarding theOne Rank One Pension(OROP) scheme stating officers were receiving greater financial benefits from the OROP scheme compared to the jawans, who constitute the majority of the armed forces and were supposedly receiving a lower amount.

Lied About Chinese TroopsThrashingIndian Army At LAC

On 16 December 2022, during his Bharat Jodo Yatra, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that Chinese troops are thrashing Indian army soldiers along the line of actual control (LAC).

Rahul Gandhi’s comments came a week after clashes broke out between the Indian and Chinese troops on 9 December 2022, in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. However, the truth was that Indian Army soldiers not only thrashed the Chinese troops but also chased them away across the LAC.

No Need For Armed Forces If Labourers Are Used

In 2021, Rahul Gandhi also said that India would not need its Army, Navy, or Air Force against China if Indian labourers, farmers, and workers were used.

Armed forces veterans condemned this statement vehemently.

Repeatedly Claimed Chinese Intruded Into India

Rahul Gandhi repeatedly claimed in his public statements that the Chinese have intruded into India bringing down the morale of the armed forces.

Cong Leader Deletes Post Praising India, Slamming China

Just a month before the clash in May 2020 when the tension between the countries was escalating, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury posted a tweet in which he slammed China and praised the Indian army.

However, the tweet was soon deleted. It is a matter of wonder who might have asked Chowdhury to delete the post.

Mocked Indian Army Jawans, Dog Unit On Intl Yoga Day

In June 2019 right after a drubbing defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, Rahul Gandhi tweeted a photo of Indian Army dogs and their handlers performing exercises on International Yoga Day.

In just one tweet Rahul Gandhi insulted the Indian Army jawans, the incredible dog unit of the Army, Yoga tradition, and the country as a whole with hisNew India’ jibe.

Allegedly Caught Using Mobile While Paying Respect to Pulwama Attack Martyrs

Rahul Gandhi was seen using his mobile phone while paying respects to the soldiers martyred in the Pulwama attack. This incident is not isolated to Gandhi alone; the Congress party as a whole has a history of actions perceived as demeaning to the Indian armed forces.

Demanded Proof Of Surgical Strikes

Congress had demanded proof of the surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army following the Uri Attack. Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and senior Congress leader, RS MP Digvijay Singh too asserted that there was no proof that the Indian Army carried out surgical strikes thereby peddling Pakistani propaganda.

Not Commemorating Kargil Vijay Diwas

The then Congress-led UPA government did not even commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas from 2004 to 2009 since it was seen asBJP’s War

The Congress’ contempt for the Indian Armed Forces probably flows from the fountainhead of its ideologue Nehru. Because he is the man who said: “We don’t need a defence plan. Our policy is ahimsa (non-violence). We foresee no military threats. Scrap the army! The police are good enough to meet our security needs”, Nehru had allegedly told Lt General Sir Robert Lockhart, the first commander in chief of India.

Following the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, which severely impacted Chennai and neighboring districts, the southern districts of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin faced the brunt of heavy rainfall triggered by cyclonic circulation. The situation escalated as extremely heavy rainfall wreaked havoc, leading to widespread flooding and several casualties. The Commune received inputs from the Defence PRO and are being reproduced here.

Rescue Efforts By The Army

In response to the crisis, the Indian Army swiftly mobilised rescue operations in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin. The 21 Maratha Light Infantry from Belgaum and an Infantry Brigade from Trivandrum, a part of the 54th division, were deployed to aid in rescuing stranded individuals. Notably, the forces conducted evacuation operations in Vasaipuram, where a human chain was formed on flooded roads to evacuate those marooned.

The evacuation efforts at Vasaipuram were conducted in three lots on a challenging timeline. In the first lot, a total of 33 people including 17 women, 13 men, and 3 children were successfully evacuated. Subsequently, the second evacuation within half an hour enabled the rescue of 36 people including 11 women and a pregnant woman, 18 men, and 6 children of which one was an infant. The third evacuation, conducted an hour or so later, involved the evacuation of 64 people including 26 women, 28 men, and 10 children of which two were infants.

On 19 December 2023, the Indian Army successfully completed a rescue mission at Nanalkadu village located in Srivaikuntam taluka of Thoothukkudi district, evacuating a total of 111 people which includes 57 women, 39 men, and 15 children. The rescued individuals are now being moved to the village of Padmanabhamangalam en route to Sri Vaikuntham. Civil authorities also requested assistance for the village of Shrivaikundam, where approximately 250 people are stranded.

In response to the floods in Tamil Nadu, the Indian Air Force has deployed Medium Lift Helicopters (MLH) and Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Dhruv for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) efforts. These helicopters are operating from Madurai in coordination with civil authorities to conduct rescue operations and supply drops. This morning, an IAF Mi-17 V5 helicopter successfully rescued four stranded individuals, including a pregnant woman and an infant aged a year and a half.

Rescue By Indian Coast Guard

Amidst the challenging situation, the Indian Coast Guard emerged as a pivotal force in aiding flood-affected areas in Southern Tamil Nadu, specifically in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts. The Tamil Nadu State administration sought their assistance to rescue stranded citizens and provide essential relief materials such as food and medicine.

The Indian Coast Guard swiftly responded by deploying six Disaster Relief Teams (DRTs) for rescue and relief operations, closely coordinating with district administrations.

An Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) with an integral helicopter onboard was dispatched to monitor coastal areas and respond to emergencies. Additional assets, including a fixed-wing Dornier aircraft and an ALH helicopter, were strategically positioned at Madurai to support ongoing rescue and relief efforts.

To further enhance their capabilities, a Rescue Diver team equipped with paddle boats, and kayaks, and a Disaster Relief Team from Coast Guard Station Mandapam were deployed to Tuticorin, contributing crucial assistance to the overall rescue operations.

Amidst the evolving situation, rescue efforts of the armed forces have been at the forefront of the relief operation with units from different parts of the country coming together in a remarkable display of service to assist citizens affected by the unprecedented rains in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

Despite the diverse origins of these officers, their collective efforts, alongside the Indian Coast Guard, aim to alleviate the impact of the crisis and provide timely assistance. Unfortunately, the leftist-Dravidianist media has overlooked their commendable rescue efforts. It is crucial to highlight that in the eyes of the armed forces, linguistic differences, including knowledge or lack thereof in Hindi, play no role. Every individual, regardless of language or background, is viewed as an equal, emphasising the commitment to rescue anyone in need.
