A recent clipping of an undated video is going viral on social media and it is of actor Anupam Kher who alleged that in 2014, ahead of the general elections, a group of film industry figures circulated a letter urging that Narendra Modi should not become Prime Minister. He stated that he declined to sign it.

In an interview with TV9 Bharatvarsh that took place in July 2025, Kher said that around seventy film personalities had endorsed the appeal, but he refused when approached. “A person who has been Chief Minister of Gujarat for 14 years — why should he not become Prime Minister?” he said, adding that he saw no reason to join such a campaign.

Kher criticised what he described as the “left wing” elite in the film and intellectual circles, alleging hypocrisy and detachment from common people. He claimed that those who spoke in the name of socialism lived in luxury while offering little tangible support to the displaced or the poor.

Referring to his Kashmiri Pandit roots, Kher said the suffering of the community had long been ignored. He alleged that successive governments and sections of the media had suppressed the scale of the violence and displacement. Speaking about The Kashmir Files, he said the film had unsettled those who had dismissed the community’s tragedy, calling the reaction to it an example of “panic and propaganda labelling.”

This Bollywood film industry had planned the end of Modiji even before he began! pic.twitter.com/h2hV6G9Ura

And today, we see that every Bollywood star is craving for a selfie with the Prime Minister.

It’s no secret that veteran actor Anupam Kher is an invaluable asset to Indian cinema. However, the counterfeiters in Gujarat cranked up his value when they decided to paste his picture on fake Rs 500 denomination notes worth Rs 1.6 crore.

The incident came to light when two unidentified men duped an Ahmedabad bullion trader using fake notes featuring Bollywood actor Anupam Kher instead of Mahatma Gandhi.

Another interesting thing is that the notes have ‘Resole Bank of India’ printed on them, instead of ‘Reserve Bank of India’. Images of the fake notes have gone viral on social media with many expressing shock at the incident, while others found it amusing.

Among them is Anupam himself, as he expressed his amusement at the incident. He took to his Instagram recently, and shared a newsclip of the fake currency bust.

He wrote in the caption, “My photo instead of Gandhi’s photo on the note of five hundred???? Anything can happen”. Anupam Kher, who made his acting debut with the Mahesh Bhatt directorial ‘Saaransh’, is considered one of the finest actors in Indian cinema, he has played a variety of characters including numerous critically acclaimed leading or supporting roles.

His accolades include two National Film Awards. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award of the Republic of India in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in 2016 for his contribution to Indian cinema and arts.

Meanwhile, on the work front, the actor will be next seen in the Kangana Ranaut directorial ‘Emergency’, which is based on the former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. The film has run into controversies over its censor certificate, and its release has been pushed many times.

Most of the films that comes out of Bollywood these days are trash. Except for the extravaganza and making stereotypes of those south of the Vindhyas, they really offer nothing meaningful. But rarely a few good ones do make it through. The Kashmir Files is one such.

It has taken three decades to even muster the courage and tell about the horrific exodus of Kashmiri Hindus who were forcefully made to become refugees in their own country. The Kashmir Files is a movie centered on the real-life incidents based on interviews with victims who have lived through the horrors of the genocide.

The movie starts with a gut-wrenching scene where an Islamic terrorist feeding blood-soaked rice to a Kashmiri Hindu woman. This very first scene of the movie sets the tone for what is to come forth – raw unadulterated truth.

The plot of the movie is simple. Krishna Pandit, victim of the first generation Kashmiri Pandit Genocide, who never lived in Kashmir except for few years, firmly believes there was no genocide, and it was exodus. He and his friends are conditioned to rebel against the initiatives of the Government of India, especially Abrogation of Article 370 and Indian armed forces who are depicted as villains.

Death of Krishna’s grandfather brings him to the get-together of his grandfather’s friends who survived the Kashmiri Pandit Genocide in the valley. The story unravels from there and ends with his speech on glory of Kashmir, the epic center of knowledge to the world.

Very few movie makers have taken such bold stories to silver screen without any adulteration. Vivek Agnihotri has done it unabashedly with scenes of brutal murder of Kashmiri Hindus and strong dialogues against ecosystem hiding the truth.

Vivek Agnihotri hits two balls with one shot. He uses a ‘woke’ Kashmiri Pandit youth to narrate the horrors that the community has gone through and while doing so he gives a tight slap to all the nefarious negationist intellectual elites who deny and underplay the horrors.

It takes sheer belief in the truth for actors and technicians to involve themselves in this project. So, special kudos to the industry veterans like Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Prakash Melwadi, Puneet Issar, and Pallavi Menon who have beautifully portrayed the characters of first generation Kashmiri pandits who forcibly fled Kashmir.

There is nothing else for someone like me to review on the ‘craft’ or other aspects. But if you’re wondering whether to watch the movie or not, then let me conclude by saying this.

Every Indian must watch this movie and feel remorse for not speaking about this for so long.
