BJP leader Annamalai launched a scathing attack on the ruling DMK government at a street-corner public meeting held at Kudiyathur in the Thondamuthur assembly constituency of Coimbatore on Friday (13 March 2026) evening, calling on voters to “strike down and throw out” the DMK administration that he accused of destroying law and order in the state.

Addressing a large gathering that included a significant number of women and mothers, Annamalai declared: “The DMK government that has ruined law and order must be thrown out. Under DMK rule, no one is safe – not a toddler, not a student, not an elderly woman.”

Women’s Safety at the Centre of Attack

Annamalai trained his sharpest guns on the DMK government’s handling of crimes against women, citing a series of recent incidents including the rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl in Thoothukudi who had just finished her Class 12 examinations. He noted that the girl had scored 495 out of 500 marks in her Class 10 board examinations and had dreams of becoming a doctor.

“Her parents went to the police station at 8:30 to file a missing complaint. The officer refused to register it and asked them to go to the Women’s Police Station. By the next afternoon, her body was found – sexually assaulted and strangled. This is law and order under DMK,” Annamalai said, his voice breaking with emotion.

He further cited government statistics presented at a press conference by senior Tamil Nadu police officials, stating that 8,008 murders and 2,080 rape cases were recorded in the state over the past five years, and that crimes against children below 18 years had touched 39,900 cases amounting to 22 children victimised every single day.

“DMK ministers stand up and say law and order is excellent in Tamil Nadu. Law and order is a laughing stock – it is a street joke,” he thundered.

Financial Assistance Claims

During the speech, Annamalai referred to welfare payments announced by the DMK government and financial assistance programmes implemented in other states. He mentioned that the Tamil Nadu government had transferred ₹5,000 to women beneficiaries under a state scheme and cited examples of cash benefits provided in BJP-governed states.

“They gave ₹20 per day and borrowed ₹150 per day in your name as debt. That is what they call the Dravidian Model of Governance,” he said, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.

“Central Schemes Must Reach the People”

Annamalai also accused the DMK government of deliberately blocking Central government welfare schemes from reaching Tamil Nadu’s citizens, citing the stalling of the PM Awas Yojana housing scheme in the state.

“Prime Minister Modi said in Tiruchirappalli – I want every poor family to have a home. But Tamil Nadu is the only state blocking these houses from reaching its rural poor. Your tax money, your schemes, the DMK government is standing in the way,” he charged.

He urged voters to bring the NDA to power so that Central government funds and schemes flow “without any obstruction” to the people of Tamil Nadu. “That is the only reason we are holding these street-corner meetings across the state,” he added.

EPS Must Be Chief Minister, Says Annamalai

Annamalai concluded his speech with a strong endorsement of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palanisami as the NDA’s Chief Ministerial candidate, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had personally expressed confidence in EPS to lead Tamil Nadu in 2026.

“Brother Edappadi Palanisami must become Chief Minister again. The day NDA comes to power, Central schemes will flow freely, corruption will end, and Tamil Nadu will once again be a state where every woman, every child, and every family is safe,” he declared.

BJP leader K Annamalai showcased his trademark sharp wit on social media after actor Prakash Raj took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s latest digital milestone.

The exchange began after Modi’s official Instagram account crossed the 100 million followers mark, a significant social media achievement for any global political leader. Celebrating the moment on X, Annamalai wrote that while others lose sleep trying to “crack the algorithm,” the Prime Minister “doesn’t crack it, he is the algorithm,” adding that Modi defines trends the world follows.

Soon after, radical leftist and DMK stooge who is also a known Modi hater, Prakash Raj responded with a terse remark: “Any use??? The Nation wants to know #justasking,” appearing to question the relevance of the follower milestone.

Annamalai quickly fired back with a pointed and humorous retort. Addressing the actor as “Anna,” he posted what he called unsolicited advice, and said, “Anna. Unsolicited advice! Gelusil for the acidity and Burnol for the burns, both might come in handy right about now. #justsaying”

Prime Minister Modi remains one of the most-followed political leaders globally on social media platforms, and the latest milestone has once again highlighted the growing role of digital reach in contemporary political messaging.

The Delhi Police recently arrested six suspects from Tamil Nadu for allegedly planning a major terrorist plot with the support of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, and Bangladeshi terrorist organisations.

According to the Delhi Police, the suspects are being brought to the national capital for further investigation. Officials said a Bangladeshi national is among those arrested. Dozens of mobile phones and SIM cards were recovered from the accused during the operation.

The development triggered sharp political reactions in Tamil Nadu.

BJP leader K Annamalai, in a post on X, alleged that the DMK government had failed to maintain law and order in the state. He wrote that the “corrupt & incompetent DMK Govt has transformed a once peaceful state into a safe haven for terrorists, anti-social elements, international drug smugglers and ruthless criminals.”

He further stated that the state’s law and order situation was in disarray and alleged that capable civil servants were being diverted from governance priorities.

Annamalai also accused the ruling dispensation of remaining a “mute spectator” instead of acting in the interests of the state and the country.

The BJP on Saturday organised a street-corner campaign titled “Tomorrow is ours… Tamil Nadu is ours!” in Chintadripet, within the Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni Assembly constituency.

Addressing the gathering, BJP leader K. Annamalai said, “Yes, change is needed. In politics, heroic speeches won’t bring change. Structure and experience matter – leaders who connect with people, who deeply understand people’s problems. When such leaders are present, real change happens. That’s why I have great respect for all leaders.”

Praising Naam Tamilar Katchi chief Seeman’s latest announcement of candidates for all 234 constituencies in the state, Annamalai said, “Regarding Seeman, putting up a candidate in all 234 constituencies is a big deal – 117 men and 117 women, that’s significant.”

He, however, argued that the upcoming election was not the time for political experimentation. “But today’s election isn’t about taking risks. 10.62 lakh crore in debt – they made mistakes for five years, friend. Tamil Nadu has had enough. That’s why this election is different – Vijay has come leaving 250 crores, asking for votes. I respect that, but think about whether this election is for him,” he said.

Calling for consolidation of opposition votes against the ruling party, Annamalai added, “That’s why this time, every vote against DMK shouldn’t be scattered. All anti-DMK votes should unite behind the NDA. Even if it’s a four-cornered fight, when votes go into the EVM machine, it becomes a two-cornered contest. I have faith in that. And when the button is pressed, it will become a single-cornered contest. I have faith in that.”

The meeting was part of the BJP’s ongoing outreach efforts ahead of the upcoming elections.

The BJP on Saturday organised a street-corner campaign titled “Tomorrow is ours… Tamil Nadu is ours!” in Chintadripet, which falls under the Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni Assembly constituency.

Addressing the gathering, BJP leader K Annamalai alleged a sharp rise in ganja circulation across the state and claimed the problem had reached residential areas and educational institutions.

He said, “Today wherever you see in Tamil Nadu, we have ganja circulation has spread to every nook and corner of the state. I am not saying ganja was not there all these years, but today it has come to the streets. Today if you go to a government school, you will find that in a student’s bag. Due to this ganja proliferation, major crimes are increasing in Tamil Nadu today.”

Annamalai went on to name several localities in and around Chepauk where he alleged the narcotics trade was prevalent. He said, “Today, if you ask where the ganja trade is most prevalent in Chepauk’s streets, even the local people here will tell you – it’s in Neelam Paasha Dargahpuram, Lady Wellingdon Women’s School area, near Nadukuppam, Krishnaampettai cemetery area, Shivaraja Puram, Mattankuppam, Chellamma Thottam, Mannjakori, Border Thottam, Pudupettai areas. To that extent, if you ask whether there is a part in Tamil Nadu that has become the capital of cannabis, then today the Chepauk area has become the capital of ganja circulation and addiction.”

Referring to actor Revathi’s recent remarks about safety concerns in parts of Chennai, Annamalai alleged harassment by the DMK’s IT wing. He said, “Actress Revathi says that she is afraid to go to some places in Chennai. On that, DMK’s IT wing is sexually harassing her.”

He further claimed that crimes against women and children had been rising in the state. Annamalai said, “From 2021 to 2025, crimes against women and children are increasing by 8 percentage points every year. Every capital in India is progressing. But this government is preventing Chennai’s development by claiming they are creating problems with the central government.”

The political and legal confrontation between DMK leader and former Union Shipping Minister TR Baalu and BJP leader K Annamalai has drawn attention to long-standing allegations linked to the shipping sector and the Sethusamudram project.

Baalu had filed a defamation case against Annamalai over allegations that, during his tenure as Union Shipping Minister, he had misused his office to facilitate the purchase of 10 ships for companies allegedly linked to him.

During court proceedings held a few days ago, Annamalai was reported to have reiterated his accusation that Baalu had abused his ministerial position. Baalu, in his submission before the court, stated that he had purchased only two ships, not ten, and had denied any wrongdoing.

The case formed the immediate backdrop to the political confrontation between the two leaders, with the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project continuing to feature prominently in their exchanges.

Sethusamudram Political Backdrop

Chief Minister MK Stalin and senior DMK leaders, including Baalu, had continued to advocate for the revival of the Sethusamudram project, arguing that it would generate employment and economic growth in Tamil Nadu. The DMK had accused the BJP-led Union government of shelving the project on religious grounds linked to the Ram Setu issue.

In January 2023, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly had passed a resolution urging the Centre to implement the project without delay. Baalu had also spoken at public forums defending the canal project and criticising the halt.

Annamalai, on his part, had repeatedly alleged that the project would benefit only a few DMK leaders. He had specifically named shipping companies allegedly linked to Baalu and DMK MP Kanimozhi and had maintained that the BJP would not allow any project alignment that could damage Ram Setu.

Jayalalithaa’s 2014 Attack Resurfaces

Amid the renewed political and legal confrontation, past remarks by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa targeting Baalu over the same project have resurfaced in political discourse.

Taking on Baalu, then the DMK nominee, during the 2014 Lok Sabha election campaign, Jayalalithaa had accused him and the DMK of forcefully pushing the Sethusamudram project to advance private business interests.

Addressing an election rally in the Cauvery delta region from where Baalu was contesting, she alleged that family members of Baalu and DMK leader M Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi had investments in shipping firms.

She said the spouses of Baalu, Porkodi and Renukadevi, held shares in Meenam Fisheries Limited, a company that owned ships. She also alleged that Kanimozhi held shares in Westgate Logistics. Jayalalithaa demanded financial transparency from Baalu. In a pointed attack, she said: “The majority of shares in a company called Meenam Fisheries Ltd. are held by the candidate from this constituency TR Baalu and his wives, Porkodi and Renukadevi. TR Baalu should inform what kind of ships this company owns, what is their depth, whether they can pass through the Sethusamudram channel and what profit the company will get from the Sethusamudram project. Similarly, Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi holds the majority of shares in a company called Westgate Logistics. This company is also involved in the shipping business. The Sethusamudram project will destroy the livelihood of fishermen and increase their industrial strength.”

She further criticised the DMK for continuing to support the project despite expert reservations, referring to an assessment by a committee headed by RK Pachauri which had raised concerns about economic viability and environmental feasibility.

Continuing Political Flashpoint

With Baalu’s defamation suit against Annamalai now active and the Sethusamudram project once again part of the political narrative, the decades-long controversy linking shipping policy, economic interests and religious concerns has re-entered public debate.

A political controversy has erupted following remarks made by DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran at a party event in Karur, with BJP state president K. Annamalai condemning the speech as disrespectful to the people of Coimbatore. DMK MLA Senthil Balaji, who was present at the meeting, issued a rebuttal defending Maran and counter-attacking the BJP.

The remarks were made during a speech delivered by Maran at the DMK’s “Stalin Thodarattum, Tamil Nadu Vellattum” event held in the Karur Assembly constituency. His observations about Coimbatore’s growth trajectory and social traits triggered political debate.

Speaking at the event, Maran said the people of Coimbatore possessed a strong competitive spirit and had advanced economically through such rivalry. He stated, “They came up by competing with each other. But Coimbatore people have one trait, they will not spoil their town, they will spoil all the towns around them in the name of pollution. It is election time now, they will mistake my words. So, in terms of economy, Coimbatore came up…”

Condemning the remarks, BJP Tamil Nadu president Annamalai issued a sharp response, accusing the DMK leader of insulting the district’s residents. In a statement, he wrote: “At a DMK meeting, Coimbatore’s people are being disrespectfully referred to as those who ruin neighboring towns by DMK Parliament member Mr. Dayanidhi Maran. Former Excise Minister Mr. Senthil Balaji is sitting there laughing upon hearing it. Coimbatore’s people are cultured. Respectful individuals. Just like the people of all districts in Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore’s residents too, through their hard work, continue to provide their economic contributions to Tamil Nadu and the nation. Except for DMK members, no other people of Tamil Nadu wish to exploit and drain the state. Even Dayanidhi Maran, who survives by clinging to the Coimbatore family, exhibits such arrogance, imagine how much self-respect the people of Coimbatore must have, who play a key role in Tamil Nadu’s economy through their tireless labor. For his arrogant speech, Dayanidhi Maran must immediately seek public forgiveness from Coimbatore’s people. It is precisely because of this arrogance from DMK members that the people of all ten constituencies in Coimbatore district are rejecting the DMK. In the upcoming elections, the same fate will befall the DMK across the entirety of Tamil Nadu.”

Responding to the criticism, DMK MLA Senthil Balaji dismissed the allegations, claiming that Maran’s speech had been misrepresented through edited video clips circulated for political purposes. He said, “Taking a video of Member of Parliament elder brother Dayanidhi Maran speaking humorously, cutting and pasting it, and doing politics out of it — as the BJP’s state president, what schemes has this ‘drama artist’ secured from the Union Government for Coimbatore? What efforts has he taken to obtain Union Government funding for the Coimbatore Metro project? What has been his contribution in addressing the GST issues that are tormenting industrial entrepreneurs in Coimbatore district? For exporters from Karur, Tiruppur, and Coimbatore who have been affected by import duties, without even lifting a straw for them — merely frying vadas in an empty mouth and cracking whips in thin air — since Coimbatore people have understood this, they made him bite the dust in the last Parliamentary election.”

DMK MP TR Baalu deposed before a Saidapet court that he had personal loans amounting to ₹1.46 crore and loans of ₹6.60 crore in his wife’s name and stated that he was unaware whether the lending company was owned by his son. The statement came during cross-examination conducted by former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai in a defamation case filed by Baalu.

The defamation case initiated by Baalu against Annamalai came up for hearing before the 17th Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Saidapet on Monday.

Cross-Examination Proceedings

During cross-examination, Baalu responded to a series of questions raised by Annamalai regarding past allegations and financial dealings.

Referring to remarks allegedly made by former Union Minister M.K. Alagiri, Baalu said claims that he had purchased 10 large ships during his tenure as Union Minister were politically motivated and unrelated to the present case. He also rejected suggestions that he had misused official position to acquire fishing vessels or to push the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project for personal business gains.

Baalu further stated that similar allegations had been made during the 2014 election period by former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, which he described as false propaganda.

On Industrial Unit Allegations

When questioned about protests by residents in Vadacheri village in Thanjavur district against an alleged liquor unit run by his family, Baalu denied the claim. He clarified that the facility in question was a chemical factory and that he was only a shareholder in the company. He added that the protests were directed against the company and not against him personally.

Loan Details

Addressing financial queries, Baalu told the court that he had declared loans of ₹1.46 crore in his name and ₹6.60 crore in his wife’s name. He said the loan had been obtained from a firm named “Trion Impex” (as cited in court proceedings) and that he did not know who owned or managed the company. He added that even if his son Rajkumar were connected to the firm, he was not aware of it and did not consider it necessary to verify.

He also rejected suggestions that the loan arrangement amounted to laundering unaccounted money, even though the firm’s GST registration had allegedly been cancelled.

Property-Related Questions

Baalu, in turn, questioned Annamalai’s financial background during the exchange, referring to land purchases made in Annamalai’s wife’s name and asking about the source of funds, noting that Annamalai had only recently retired from government service. He also raised references to business links involving Annamalai’s relatives and a brick kiln unit that had reportedly faced a CBI search.

Annamalai’s Statement Outside Court

Speaking to reporters outside the Saidapet court complex, Annamalai said he had personally conducted Baalu’s cross-examination for nearly three hours, expressing confidence in the corruption allegations he had raised against the DMK leader.

He said the cross-examination covered multiple subjects, including the Sethusamudram project, the industrial unit controversy, and ownership details of vehicles used by Baalu. He added that the questioning had been adjourned as Baalu had to leave for a scheduled flight.

Annamalai further alleged that Baalu made fresh defamatory remarks during the hearing by claiming that Annamalai had acquired properties in his wife’s name. He said Baalu was unaware of his wife’s educational qualifications, income, and tax payments, and announced that he would be filing a fresh defamation case against Baalu over those remarks.

The case has been adjourned for further cross-examination.

Tamil Nadu BJP leader K Annamalai on Monday, 16 February 2026, said he personally cross-examined DMK MP and party treasurer TR Baalu for nearly three hours in an ongoing defamation case linked to the BJP leader’s earlier “DMK Files” allegations, and announced that he would initiate a fresh defamation suit over remarks made against his wife during court proceedings.

The case stems from a press conference held by Annamalai during his tenure as state BJP chief, where he released a document titled “DMK Files,” listing alleged assets of senior DMK leaders, including TR Baalu. Following this, Baalu filed a defamation case against him, which is currently being heard at the Saidapet Court in Chennai.

Appearing in person for the hearing, Annamalai addressed reporters outside the court and said he had chosen to argue the case himself despite having senior legal counsel.

“In the defamation case filed against me by former Union Minister TR Baalu, I got the opportunity today to directly cross-examine him for three hours. In India, only in a few cases do the concerned individuals personally argue their cases. Because I have full confidence in the corruption charges we raised through DMK Files Part 1 and Part 2, and the allegations I levelled against him, I withdrew the affidavit filed by our senior counsel and appeared personally as an ordinary citizen to argue,” he said.

He added that the cross-examination was adjourned as Baalu had to leave to catch a flight scheduled for 2:15 PM. The next round of cross-examination, he said, has been deferred to 7 April 2026 due to Baalu’s parliamentary commitments throughout March.

Questions Raised During Cross-Examination

Annamalai said several questions were put to Baalu during the proceedings but declined to reveal full details as the matter is sub judice.

He, however, indicated that queries related to:

  • The Sethusamudram project
  • Alleged liquor distillery links
  • Companies run by Baalu’s family
  • The ownership of the car in which Baalu arrived at court
  • Financial liabilities and loans

He said more questions would be raised in the next hearing.

Fresh Defamation Case Over Wife Allegation

The BJP leader said a fresh defamation case would be filed after Baalu allegedly accused him in court of purchasing property in his wife’s name through corrupt means.

“Instead of answering my questions, he raised a new allegation that I bought property in my wife’s name through corruption,” Annamalai said, adding that he questioned Baalu on whether he knew his wife’s educational background, employment, or income – to which, he claimed, Baalu responded in the negative.

He said the property in question was agricultural land purchased through legitimate means.

“The land was bought after paying proper income tax, and we obtained a ₹2.5 crore bank loan for it. Without knowing what my wife studied, where she works, or how much she earns, he made defamatory allegations,” he said.

Annamalai stated that through the new defamation case, he would publicly disclose financial records covering the past 15 years, including salaries earned by him and his wife, loans taken, and bank transactions.

He added that his wife is an IIM Bangalore graduate who has worked in companies in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai.

Chennai Stay, Party Funds Clarification

Responding to another allegation, Annamalai said Baalu had claimed that friends were paying rent for his stay in Chennai — which he termed defamatory.

“I stay in Chennai only because of my responsibility as BJP State President. I have no business or house in Chennai. I moved from my hometown for party work. Funds given by friends for party activities and how the party spent them will also be clarified through the defamation case,” he said.

Parallel Case Against RS Bharathi

Annamalai also noted that a separate defamation case he filed against DMK Organising Secretary RS Bharathi had been adjourned to another date due to Bharathi’s absence.

When asked about the next hearing date, he indicated that Bharathi’s case was expected to come up in March.

“Will Teach DMK A Lesson”

Expressing confidence in the outcome, Annamalai said the litigation would serve a larger political purpose.

“Through this case, we will definitely teach the DMK a lesson. When ordinary citizens speak up for their rights, this incident stands as proof that we can argue our own cases. No matter how big a person is, an ordinary citizen can challenge allegations if he has confidence in what he has said,” he stated.

He said he generally does not file defamation suits but chose to pursue this matter since Baalu had initiated legal action first.

“Our single goal is to defeat the DMK. There must be no distraction from that path. I have full faith in the judiciary. Justice will prevail,” he added.

Annamalai further said that the forthcoming defamation proceedings would provide an opportunity to place all financial details in the public domain, reiterating that he viewed the legal battle as part of a broader commitment to “honest politics.”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on 31 January 2026, inaugurated and laid foundation stones for a series of development projects in Sivaganga district and distributed welfare assistance to thousands of beneficiaries.

Addressing a public gathering, the Chief Minister inaugurated 49 completed projects worth ₹2,555 crore and laid foundation stones for 28 new projects, including drinking water schemes and infrastructure works. He stated that the State government had completed major institutions such as a law college and an agricultural university within four years, while the AIIMS Madurai project promised by the Union government had remained pending for 11 years.

Responding to media queries on the delay in AIIMS construction, Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai addressed a press meet and countered the Chief Minister’s remarks.

Speaking to reporters, Annamalai said, “No brother, we’ve told you everything clearly. Not just 11 medical colleges, Tamil Nadu is the state which has the highest number of government medical colleges in India. Everyone knows that. No state has been given 11 in one shot. That too is Tamil Nadu. As far as AIIMS is concerned, as you all can see work is going on. It is not fully functional yet, it will happen soon, you are witness to that as well. But did our Chief Minister, MK Stalin, bother to visit and review the progress of the AIIMS project, which has been sanctioned for our state at a cost of several crores? Is Madurai not under MK Stalin’s governance? Is it a separate zone? Does Madurai not come under Tamil Nadu? He goes to Madurai several times, he could have gone to the AIIMS construction site and enquired with the staff there about the progress. If there was a delay, he could have called up the authorities and enquired about it. How many times in these past 5 years has TN CM Stalin gone to Madurai? Has he gone near the AIIMS?”

He continued, “So as far as CM Stalin is concerned, he has been working for the past 4.5 years to ensure that AIIMS is not built. They did not give the license to cut the trees for the construction. It took 1.5 years to cut the trees. There was a delay in acquiring land. They delayed every single part of the process – right from the Panchayat level to all the TN authorities. But beyond that, AIIMS is going to be complete. They said they don’t want AIIMS, it has not been built, it is easy to say so. But with 0% cooperation of the state government, today the BJP government at the centre, despite not having a friendly government in the state, has reached this level. So if the CM wants to criticize AIIMS, we will accept it after he goes there and sees for himself the progress. But for someone who has never gone that side, the one who only speaks on the microphone in the Assembly and the stage, has been a chief minister who has had no concern, an indifferent person. AIIMS will be functional soon for the benefit of the people.”
