BJP leader K. Annamalai has sharply criticised the DMK government following the tragic deaths of two sanitation workers in Trichy, who died of asphyxiation while cleaning a drainage system. In a strongly worded statement on social media, Annamalai questioned the state’s inaction on preventing such avoidable fatalities, asking Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, “How many more deaths will wake you up, Thiru @mkstalin?”

The two deceased Prabhu from Chinna Salem and Ravi from Thiruvappur in Pudukkottai were reportedly contract workers engaged in manual sewer cleaning when they were overcome by toxic gases. Prabhu collapsed first, and Ravi, in a desperate attempt to save him, also lost consciousness. Both were pulled out by firefighters but were declared dead at the hospital. The Thiruverumbur police have registered a case and are currently investigating the incident.

Calling the DMK government a “patchwork model,” Annamalai condemned its continued use of manual labour in hazardous conditions without adequate safety gear, despite manual scavenging being banned under the 2013 Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act. He demanded immediate compensation of ₹40 lakh for each of the bereaved families and accused the government of prioritising publicity over public safety. He also criticised the state administration for failing to adopt robotic alternatives like HomoSEP and Sepoy, developed by IIT Madras to eliminate manual scavenging.

Full statement of K Annamalai read, “How many more deaths will wake you up, Thiru @mkstalin? The tragic death of two sanitation workers in Thiruverumbur, Trichy, due to poisonous gas while cleaning a sewer is deeply shocking. Extending my deepest condolences to their families and urge the DMK government to provide immediate compensation of ₹40 lakhs to each of the bereaved families. Under this patchwork model, publicity-driven DMK Government, TN leads the nation in such avoidable deaths, and continues to deploy workers without even basic protective gear. Nearly 50 lives have been lost in the past three years alone, while the government spends lavishly on publicity instead of safeguarding those at the frontline of public health. IIT Madras students have already developed robots like HomoSEP and Sepoy to eliminate manual scavenging. Why has the DMK government failed to adopt them? TN CM Thiru @mkstalin avl only finds time to build statues and fight legal battles for building statues for his father yet cannot allocate funds to protect sanitation workers.”

The broader context of the criticism comes at the backdrop of national data that highlights the ongoing danger of manual scavenging. Between 2020 and 2024, 294 deaths related to sewer and septic tank cleaning were reported in India, with Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi among the states with the highest numbers. Despite the legal ban, unsafe practices continue to endanger workers’ lives across the country.

Reports indicate growing dissatisfaction within the AIADMK party as General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami expressed frustration with district-level cadres who remained silent following Tamil Nadu BJP leader Annamalai’s recent criticism.

On 25 August 2024, a BJP general meeting in Chennai featured Annamalai making severe criticism of Palaniswami and the party. Annamalai accused Palaniswami of opportunistically seizing the Chief Minister’s position and mocked him as a coward, further criticizing the AIADMK party. In response, ADMK members in districts such as Madurai and Sivagangai burned effigies of Annamalai. However, the reaction was minimal across most other districts.

This response has sparked considerable turmoil within Tamil Nadu’s political sphere. Former Telangana/Puducherry Governor and TN BJP leader Tamilisai also weighed in, advising Annamalai to show respect to party leaders and temper his rhetoric. Despite this, ADMK leaders have been notably reticent. Former ministers KP Munusamy, R.B.Udhaya Kumar, Sellur K. Raju, Kadambur Raju, D. Jayakumar, and others condemned Annamalai’s remarks, but many district secretaries only offered token protests, while senior leaders largely remained silent. This lack of unified opposition has deeply unsettled Palaniswami.

It is alleged that Palaniswami confided to close associates, questioning why district secretaries were reluctant to challenge Annamalai’s criticisms when they would have reacted strongly if former Gen Secy J Jayalalithaa was being discussed. He expressed disappointment that despite allowing district secretaries to retain their positions despite various complaints, they now hesitate to defend him against Annamalai’s allegations.

Senior ADMK members argue that focusing on conflicts with the BJP rather than the DMK, which they view as the true adversary, is misguided. This stance has contributed to the subdued reaction to Annamalai’s harsh criticism, further aggravating Palaniswami. Additionally, the strained relationships among senior leaders are believed to be another factor behind the lack of strong opposition to Annamalai.

What Did Annamalai Say?

On 25 August 2024, Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai came down heavily on the state’s opposition parties, including the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), putting an end to speculation of a BJP alliance with them. He also condemned former AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), labelling himthe highest bidding agent of the party.

Annamalai recounted how EPS came to power. “Mr Edappadi Palaniswami, in your hometown Siluvampalayam, a murder occurred during a dispute between brothers. After the incident, one person was arrested and imprisoned, while another hid in the Western Ghats. You are the one who grabbed the legs of a senior ADMK minister who is currently serving as a minister in the DMK. After closing the case, you stood in the panchayat election and faced defeat. So, please don’t lecture me about honesty.

Annamalai then criticized Palaniswami. He said the latter ascended to power within the party through a tender and bidding system in Koovathur. “To tell a dignified farmer’s son Annamalai, who signed in green ink for ten years and never borrowed a single penny, tharkuri(illiterate) Palaniswami, has no locus standi to speak about me. This is arrogance. In 2026, the party run by Puratchi Thalaivar and Puratchi Thalaivi is now run byfrogs in the well. You will be thrown out, not even to fourth place.”

He then explained why the BJP had severed ties with the AIADMK. In 2019, EPS mocked the PM, claiming he would not win and, therefore, would not participate in the candidate nominations.

Following that incident, the BJP decided to avoid any alliance with the ADMK. He concluded by asserting that both Dravidian parties are adversaries. He added that for the BJP to establish its dominance, the 2026 election represents a ripe opportunity for the party.

Why Annamalai Severely Criticized EPS & AIADMK

At the same meeting, Annamalai explained why the BJP had severed ties with the AIADMK. In 2019, EPS mocked the PM, claiming he would not win and, therefore, would not participate in the candidate nominations. Following that incident, the BJP decided to avoid any alliance with the ADMK.

On 27 August 2024, during a press conference, Annamalai reaffirmed his stance, stating, “The criticism directed towards EPS was 100% truthful and will not be retracted, not even by 1%. Former ministers can say whatever they want and ridicule me by calling metharkuri‘, mocking my journey to study, mocking my work, and everything else. That’s okay. But should I fold my hands and say,You have 40 years of experience and I only have 3 years of experience’? I didn’t come here to say that. Whether it’s the internal or external party, my style won’t change. I came here for a political change. After I became the president, look at how the party has progressed. We have contested alone for the local body and Lok Sabha. We contested alone so that the party will grow.”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin today said there was a “drastic reduction” in the Southern Railways budget for 2024-2025, sparking a swift rebuttal from Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and state BJP chief K. Annamalai. The BJP leaders highlighted the record allocation, seven times more than during UPA. They blamed the state government for delays in land acquisition as a critical hindrance to project progress.

In his letter to the Railway Minister, Stalin criticised the reduced budget for Southern Railways in the 2024-2025 regular budget compared to the Interim Budget. He highlighted that the Interim Budget allocated ₹976.1 crore for new lines and ₹2,214.4 crore for doubling existing lines. In comparison, the revised allocation in the regular budget presented on July 23 fell to ₹301.3 crore for new lines and ₹1,928.8 crore for doubling lines.

The CM, on his X official account stated, “Hon’ble @AshwiniVaishnaw, we are deeply concerned about the significant reduction of ₹674.8 cr for new line projects and ₹285.64 cr for doubling projects in Southern Railways as per the 2024-25 budget. This will severely impact vital projects in Tamil Nadu. I urge your immediate intervention to ensure adequate funds and prevent delays in these crucial developments.”

Railway Minister Responds

Railway Minister Vaishnaw refuted Stalin’s claims on X platform, stating that the NDA government had allocated a record ₹6,362 crore for railway development in Tamil Nadu, more than seven times the average annual allocation of ₹879 crore during the UPA era. He also pointed out that delays in land acquisition were impacting project progress. Vaishnaw urged the Tamil Nadu government to expedite land acquisition, promising the central government would enhance efforts to advance railway development if state cooperation improved.

He replied, Would like to bring the following facts to the notice of Hon’ble CM Thiru @mkstalin NDA government has allocated a record amount of ₹6,362 Crore for developing railways in Tamil Nadu. This amount is more than 7 times the average allocation done in the UPA era (only ₹879 Crore per year). In our constitutional structure, land is a state subject. Projects can be executed speedily if only your government supports us in land acquisition. Only 807 Ha land has been acquired so far against requirement of 2,749 Ha land. We seek your intervention in land acquisition. From our side, we promise that if you take one step, we will take two steps for development of railways in Tamil Nadu.”

It should be noted that, before Vaishnaw’s rebuttal, Annamalai responded to Stalin’s criticisms by clarifying the distribution of Southern Railway divisions and highlighting that not all of these divisions are located in Tamil Nadu. He highlighted that while the budget for doubling works in Southern Railways might have been reduced, Tamil Nadu-specific projects for doubling received an increased allocation of ₹1,696 crore in the revised budget, compared to ₹1,437 crore in the Interim Budget—an increase of ₹259 crore. He also pointed out a net rise in ₹65 crore for gauge conversion projects and a significant boost in funding for Track Renewals, rising from ₹1,240 crore to ₹1,755 crore.

Annamalai raised specific queries regarding land acquisition for new railway lines in Tamil Nadu. He questioned the status of land acquisition for the Madurai-Tuticorin line, noting that only 74.87 hectares of the required 870.98 hectares had been acquired as of December 2023. He also asked for updates on the land acquisition for the Tindivanam-Tiruvannamalai line, which has been ongoing since 2010.

Annamalai concluded by contrasting the current budget allocations with the average annual outlay of ₹879 crore during the 2009-2014 DMK-Congress regime, emphasising that the substantial increase to ₹6,362 crore in the current year underscores significant progress in funding for Tamil Nadu’s railway infrastructure.

Annamalai, via his official X account, stated, “We bring to the attention of TN CM Thiru @mkstalin the following: Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Palakkad, Salem, and Thiruvananthapuram—these are divisions under Southern Railway; not every division falls under TN.

The budget for doubling works for Southern Railways could be reduced, but the TN-specific projects for doubling works have received an increased allocation of ₹1696 Crore in the revised project. The interim budget allocation for TN-specific projects for doubling works was ₹1437 Crores. There is an increase in allocation of ₹259 Crores.  Notably, the budget for gauge conversion has seen a net increase of 65 Crores for TN-specific projects under Southern Railways. Tiruchchirappalli-Nagore-Karaikal gauge conversion work in TN has received an increased allocation of ₹135 Crore.”

“The overall budget for Southern Railways for Track Renewals (which includes track repair, replacement, and maintenance works) has increased to ₹1755 Crores from ₹1240 Crores. Most of these Track Renewal projects are allocated to divisions under Southern Railways in Tamil Nadu, ensuring the safety and reliability of our railway network. While the budgeting for New Lines has been reduced for divisions in TN under Southern Railway, there has been a substantial increase in allocation for Doubling works, Gauge Conversion, and Track Renewals.

However, we seek the following clarification from TN CM Thiru @mkstalin :

  • For the Madurai-Tuticorin via Aruppukkottai (143.5 km) New Line, approximately 870.98 Ha. of Land is required, and as of December 2023, only 74.87 Ha of land was acquired. We understand that the budget for the new line is allocated based on the progress made on land acquisition. Can the TN Govt clarify the status of land acquisition?
  • Land acquisition for a new line between Tindivanam and Tiruvannamalai has been ongoing since 2010. Has the Land acquisition been completed?

A similar question arises for other new railway lines where the budgets are cut, and the DMK Government is duty-bound to answer.” He added.

The average annual budget outlay to TN was just ₹879 crore per year during 2009-14 during the DMK Congress Regime. However, allocations to TN in all streams have increased significantly over the last ten years, and this year’s railway budget of ₹6362 Crore to TN stands as a testament to this.” He further added

Today, Tamil Nadu BJP  President K. Annamalai criticised Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for deliberately overlooking the central government’s contribution to a major infrastructure initiative. This project, located at the Industrial Housing Facility at SIPCOT Industrial Park Vallam Vadagal in Sriperumbudur, will provide safe housing for 18,720 working women.

Foxconn in Tamil Nadu

Chief Minister MK Stalin and Foxconn Hon Hai Chief Young Liu inaugurated a state-of-the-art housing complex in Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu, on 17 August 2024. The ₹700 crore facility aims to offer a secure, clean, and comfortable environment for 18,000 women workers employed by Foxconn, an iPhone manufacturer.

The complex spans ten floors and 13 blocks and has amenities such as kitchens, dining areas, CCTV surveillance, UPS systems, ETPs, and recreational spaces. Foxconn will cover the rent on a per-bed basis. Highlighting Tamil Nadu’s significant presence in Foxconn’s operations in India, Young Liu remarked, “This represents a new beginning, and we are proud to support sustainability.”

This development follows a 2021 protest by Foxconn workers who complained about poor food and unhygienic living conditions, leading to allegations of food poisoning and subsequent scrutiny from Apple.

The CM boasted the project as “pioneering,” emphasising Tamil Nadu’s role as home to 42% of India’s industrial female workforce and entirely a state initiative. He outlined several women’s empowerment initiatives and stated that the state aims to become a leader in South Asia. Stalin also highlighted Tamil Nadu’s ambition to become a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

In his official X account, Chief Minister MK Stalin stated that “Tamil Nadu is the No. 1 state in India, with 42% of the nation’s total working women. For the first time in India, we have constructed and inaugurated a mega infrastructure project offering safe housing for 18,720 working women—the #SIPCOT Industrial Housing Facility in Thiruperumpudur. Thanks to @SIPCOTTN and @HonHai_Foxconn!”

Centre’s Role

The state government’s SIDCO (Small Industries Development Corporation) invested ₹170 crore, borrowed ₹500 crore, and utilised ₹30 crore from the central government’s affordable housing scheme for this project.

Responding to MK Stalin on X, the BJP chief pointed out that the state government failed to acknowledge Centre’s contributions. He noted that the Affordable Rented Housing Complexes (ARHCs) scheme, launched under PMAY-U in July 2020, included the Sriperumbudur and Chennai projects sanctioned to Tamil Nadu in September 2021 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Annamalai highlighted that the ₹707 crore project included a ₹37.44 crore central grant and a ₹498 crore loan from the State Bank of India. He expressed confidence that Chief Minister Stalin was aware of these details.

Annamalai stated, “The Affordable Rented Housing Complexes (ARHCs) scheme under PMAY-U was launched in July 2020, and the housing project in Sriperumbudur and Chennai was among the five ARHC projects Sanctioned to TN by our Hon PM Thiru @narendramodi avl in September 2021. Built at a cost of ₹707 Crore, the 18,720-bed dormitory in Vallam-Vadagal has a component of a Central Govt grant of ₹37.44 Crore & a term loan of ₹498 Crore from the State Bank of India. We are sure that TN CM Thiru @mkstalin is aware.”

Affordable Rental Housing Complexes

The Affordable Rental Housing Complexes (ARHCs) scheme was launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in July 2020 as a sub-scheme of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U).

The scheme aims to provide dignified and affordable rental housing for urban migrants and the poor near their workplaces. By offering better housing options close to their employment sites, it seeks to improve living conditions for these groups.

Implementation Model-1 involves converting existing government-funded vacant houses, built initially under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) and Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY), into ARHCs. This conversion is carried out either through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) or by Public Agencies.

Model 2 focuses on the construction, operation, and maintenance of new ARHCs by public or private entities on their own vacant land. The housing facility in Sriperumbudur is part of the ARHC provided under Model 2 of the scheme, where construction, operation, and maintenance of ARHCs are done by Public or private Entities on their own vacant land.

In Tamil Nadu, several such projects with a total of 57,364 units were sanctioned by the Centre in cities including Chennai, Sriperumbudur, and Hosur alone, Kaushal Kishore, Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs, informed so in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on March 2022.

Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai dismissed any possible alliance with AIADMK for the 2026 election, calling Madurai MLA Sellur Raju’s comments hinting at the same as a “comedy” and a misunderstanding.

Annamalai said the BJP has moved on and is not considering rekindling its alliance with the AIADMK during a press meeting in Chennai today. He was responding to a reporter’s question on Sellur Raju.

The state BJP chief used the opportunity to criticize the AIADMK and its MLAs, asserting that the BJP has chosen a separate path with leaders working towards a unified goal of winning elections. In contrast, he noted the inconsistency in the statements of AIADMK MLAs, who claim they are not interested in alliances but then ask for them, which he finds ironic.

Annamalai said, “If someone today says there should be an alliance and there should not, it shows their fear. We are clearly going on our path. We have identified and shown the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders, not just once or twice. We are speaking unanimously on many stages, and all leaders are working tirelessly. We have placed the 2026 election as a coalition government before the people on one side. On the other hand, we are not speaking about other parties.

He later said the AIADMK was unnecessarily issuing statements about the alliance. “You tell me if someone says ten times that I’m not going to ally with you. They keep saying we wont form an alliance tomorrow, on the third day, and on the tenth day, then I am in doubt if they are inviting us for an alliance. We have decided not to ally and have started our work. Hence, the former ministers and honourable leaders’ statements are like a comedy to me.

Annamalai also expressed surprise at the misinterpretation of his speech at the Tirupur conference, which he believes has led to misleading statements. Annamalai ridiculed that, “To tell you I’ve forgotten that there is a party called ADMK, and we are doing our work.”

Previously speaking in Tiruppur, Annamalai highlighted a decline in vote shares for the two major Dravidian parties, noting that those with 40% support have dropped to 30%, 26%, and 19%. He remarked that if the AIADMK and DMK declare a willingness for a coalition government in Tamil Nadu for the 2026 elections, it could alter the political landscape. Annamalai emphasized that the BJP is closely monitoring the situation and suggested that a shift could occur if these parties explicitly use the term “coalition government”.

Annamalai said, “Parties that had a vote share of 40% have decreased to 30%, 26%, and 19%. If, in the 2026 Assembly election, the AIADMK and DMK declare that they are ready for a coalition government in Tamil Nadu, then the political landscape will change. We are not fools, and we are keenly watching the politics. For this to change differently, the DMK and AIADMK should take it into their hands, meaning they should use the word ‘coalition government.’ The DMK will not use that term, and I don’t know about the AIADMK. If they say it will be a coalition government, then change is possible.”

In response, Sellur Raju appeared to have misinterpreted Annamalai’s comments. Raju criticized Annamalai’s remarks, questioning whether Annamalai’s statements implied that AIADMK should request seats from the BJP and said, “It’s like ADMK should ask him for a seat. Is he a leader? Look at how he speaks. If AIADMK comes to such a position, we will die.”

Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai criticised the ruling DMK government for ignoring a high-profile drug trafficking and money laundering case, in which the ED arrested Mohammed Saleem, brother of a dismissed DMK functionary, Jaffer Sadiq. It was discovered that Saleem accumulated over ₹8 crore in illegal cash deposits in these drug operations.

ED detains Saleem

Mohammed Saleem, former deputy secretary of the Central Chennai zone in Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the sibling of a dismissed DMK functionary, Jaffer Sadiq, was detained by the ED in connection with a money laundering investigation.

The ED, in its official X account, stated, “ED, Chennai has made a significant arrest in the ongoing investigation into high-profile drug smuggling and money laundering. Mohammed Saleem has been arrested under the provisions of PMLA, 2002, for his involvement in laundering proceeds linked to the Jaffer Sadiq case.”

Sadiq, previously arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for involvement in international drug trafficking, was taken into custody at Tihar Jail in New Delhi in June as part of the investigation into drug-related money laundering. The ED’s latest action follows an NCB investigation that identified Sadiq as the mastermind behind an elaborate scheme to smuggle pseudoephedrine disguised as health-mix powder and desiccated coconut to Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia. This case also builds on prior customs seizures.

Details about the case

The ED’s investigation revealed that Mohammed Saleem, in collaboration with Jaffer Sadiq, played a crucial role in exporting and concealing pseudoephedrine and other narcotics. Saleem, involved in various companies and entities, used these platforms to launder and layer the illicit proceeds. It was discovered that Saleem accumulated over ₹8 crore in illegal cash deposits across several accounts he controlled.

Saleem employed money laundering tactics such as using financial intermediaries and fictitious loans to obscure the origins of this cash. Additionally, he channelled drug trafficking proceeds into real estate investments and purchased luxury items, including a Jaguar. His amassed wealth, in sharp contrast to his declared income, highlights the extent of his involvement in the criminal network.

Saleem appeared before a local court on 13 August 2024, where Principal Sessions Judge S Alli remanded him to judicial custody until 27th of August. The ED has also requested 15 days of custody for Saleem. The judge has ordered a notice regarding the agency’s request and scheduled a further hearing for the next day.

BJP shames DMK for ignoring the drug menace

In this context, Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has slammed the ruling DMK government for its ignorance regarding these developments, and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin should recognize that these incidents are not marks of honour but rather a disgrace to the state.

Annamalai via his official X account stated, “The DMK Government in Tamil Nadu had no idea till the NCB identified the Drug Kingpin and DMK functionary Jaffar Sadiq, for smuggling Pseudoephedrine, who was operating right under their noses and a frequent visitor to their party headquarters. Today, his brother & VCK functionary Mohammed Salim has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate for his involvement in international drug trafficking and profiting through it. Recently, a DMK functionary, Ibrahim, was arrested by NCB for smuggling 70 Crore worth of methamphetamine. TN CM Thiru@mkstalin  should realise that these are not badges of honour but a disgrace to the state.

Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai has accused the ruling DMK government in the state of employing innovative methods of corruption to finance their projects. He stated that the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) is coercing industries, particularly in Chennai and the Western Kongu Region, to contribute funds for the F4 racing event, a project tied to Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of the Chief Minister and the Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Development.

Annamalai asserted that businesses are being extorted to make contributions ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹1,00,00,000 to “Racing Promotions Private Limited,” a company led by Akhilesh Reddy, a close associate of DMK scion Udhayanidhi Stalin. Hence, he demanded a full disclosure regarding the company’s financial activities and warned the government not to compel citizens to support such projects.

Annamalai via his official X account stated that, “DMK has constantly reinvented itself in innovating new methods of corruption, laying a path for its friends in the I.N.D.I. Alliance to follow. In the past, they gave away medical admission merit lists in exchange for Party donations, and now they have gone to an all-new level in mobilizing money. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has been tasked with one job in the past few months. They have been compelling industries, mostly from Chennai & Western Kongu Region of TN, to cough up money for the F4 racing event or face trouble. The F4 racing event is Gopalapuram Scion Thiru @Udhaystalin’s dream project, postponed last year and scheduled to take place next month in Chennai.”

The State Government of Tamil Nadu had already spent ₹40 crore to realise his dream. Now, Small business owners, Entrepreneurs and Industrialists in Tamil Nadu are compelled to make Thiru @Udhaystalin’s dreams a reality. The TNPCB officials have rate cards ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹1,00,00,000 and the contributions are to be made to a company named “Racing Promotions Private Limited”. Any concern not paying, is certain to face visits by TN pollution control board officials and will face their music. Incidentally, Thiru Akhilesh Reddy, a close friend of the Gopalapuram Scion, is the Chairman & Managing Director of “Racing Promotions Private Limited”. He added.

“On behalf of @BJP4TamilNadu, we demand full disclosure of the statements of this company to be published in the public domain and let the people of Tamil Nadu see how this Government fleeces people’s hard-earned money. We wish to remind Thiru@Udhaystalin that the people of TN cannot be forced to fund his pet projects.” He further added.

Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai has accused the ruling DMK government of politicizing the state’s educational progress and obstructing central funds by stalling their process. He has challenged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, questioning whether his personal ego is obstructing the advancement of educational institutions in the state.

Annamalai, via his official X account, argued that the DMK government in Tamil Nadu lacks the vision to enhance educational infrastructure in government schools and colleges. This failure has negatively impacted the state’s reputation in recent years and accused the DMK of obstructing initiatives from PM Narendra Modi and depriving Tamil Nadu’s people of the benefits from central government programs.

Annamalai noted that despite committing to sign an MoU for PM-Shri Schools, the Tamil Nadu government has yet to finalize the agreement, even as the academic year has begun. Meanwhile, DMK MPs in Parliament have criticized the central government’s efforts to improve higher education institutions, underscoring the urgent need for progress. He asserted that the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), launched last year by the Prime Minister with an investment of ₹12,926.10 crore, aims to address the needs of educationally underserved areas has the potential to significantly enhance the educational landscape in Tamil Nadu and nationwide.

Annamalai stated, “The DMK Government in TN lacks the vision to upgrade Educational Infrastructure in Government Schools/Colleges in Tamil Nadu, which would bridge the gap of proficiency that has constantly put TN in a bad light in the last few years. The DMK Government has stonewalled our Honourable PM Thiru @narendramodi avl’s initiatives and has deprived the TN’s people of benefiting from the central government programmes.”

Despite committing to sign the MoU for PM-Shri Schools this year in April after consultation, the TN Government has yet to do so, even with the academic year already underway. Today, the DMK MPs in the parliament questioned the Government on the steps taken by the central government to improve the quality of the higher education institutions, highlighting the pressing need for action.” He stated.

The Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), a crucial initiative launched last year by our Hon PM at an outlay of ₹12926.10 crore, is designed to cater to the needs of educationally unserved/underserved areas in our country. This initiative has the potential to significantly improve the educational landscape in Tamil Nadu and across the nation.” He further stated.

The DMK MPs questioning the government’s initiatives should have known that the DMK Government in TN has yet to sign the MoU for implementing PM-USHA, the scheme specifically designed to cater to improving the quality of Higher Education in states. It’s time for TN CM Thiru @mkstalin to answer the question: Is your bloated ego taking precedence over the upgradation of Educational institutions in TN?”  he finally asked.

Attached is an unstarred question answered on 29 July 2024 regarding allocating funds to state government universities. CN Annadurai, Selvam G, and Navaskani K have inquired whether the Minister of Education would provide detailed information. The question seeks to understand the specifics of the financial support provided to these universities, aiming to clarify the extent and nature of the funding allocated by the central government.

  • (a) whether the Government is providing funds to the specific State Government Universities and colleges so as to improve the overall quality of existing state higher educational institutions;
  • (b) if so, the details thereof;
  • (c) the quantum of financial outlay sanctioned by the Government for the year 2023-2024 to 2024-2025;
  • (d) the number of State Universities and colleges that have been benefitted during the last three years in the State of Tamil Nadu; and
  • (e) What steps has the government taken or is taking to improve higher education in the country?”

The Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Dr Sukanta Majumdar, provided the following response, “(a) to (d): Education is a subject which falls under the concurrent list of the Constitution of India, where both Centre as well as State have legislative power to make laws. State Universities are established by an Act of the State Legislation, function under the administrative control of the concerned State and development fund for improving the overall quality of existing State higher educational institution is primarily the concern of that State Government.”

“With a vision for improving access, equity and excellence in State Higher Education system through support under various components viz Multi-Disciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERU), grants to strengthen Universities, Grants to strengthen Colleges, New Model Degree Colleges (NMDC) and Gender inclusion and Equity Initiatives. The Central Government launched the third phase of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) in June 2023 in the form of Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) with an outlay of ₹12926.10 crore for the period 2023-24 to 2025-26 to cater to needs of educationally unserved/underserved areas,” it added.

Under PM-USHA, priority is given to Focus Districts. The focus districts are identified by the concerned States/Union Territories based on various criteria, including low Gross Enrolment Ratio, Gender Parity, population proportion and enrolment proportion for females, transgenders, Scheduled castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, Aspirational/Border Area/Left Wing Extremism prone districts etc.” it further added.

Under the scheme, 440 units have been approved with a total amount of ₹5613.12 crore under various components. Tamil Nadu has not signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry to implement PM-USHA in the State. During the last three years funds to 09 state Universities and 22 colleges have been released for the state of Tamil Nadu under the previous phases of RUSA.” it further added.

For the question E, the ministers reply was, “In higher education, various transformative changes include providing muchneeded flexibility, allowing creative combination of subjects, providing multiple pathways, establishing equivalence and mobility to the students through National Credit Framework (NCrF), National Higher Education Qualification Framework, Academic Bank of Credit (ABC), multiple entry/exit; offering of courses and books / course materials in Indian Languages; conducting entrance exams such as Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) in 13 Indian languages; use of technology to enhance access to education and for administration and governance of Universities and Higher Education Institutes (HEIs); permitting learners to avail upto 40% credit Courses from Study Web of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) platform; industry academia collaboration for internships and to develop courses and curriculum to meet the industry and societal needs, offering of industry-aligned courses; promoting Indian and Foreign HEIs for setting of campuses abroad and in India respectively; enhanced reputation of the Indian HEIs in international ranking; embedding of Indian Knowledge system in the education etc.

Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party President Annamalai, criticized the DMK in Tamil Nadu for misleading the public by falsely comparing electricity rates with other states and misrepresenting the youth unemployment rate in Tamil Nadu.

Regarding this issue, Annamalai criticized the Tamil Nadu government for misleading the public by comparing electricity rates with other states. He highlighted that the DMK, in its election manifesto, promised a monthly electricity bill collection system as its 221st commitment, which he urged the government to fulfill. According to Annamalai, implementing this system would significantly reduce electricity costs for households.

Annamalai said, “What DMK said in its election manifesto promise number ‘221’ is that it is enough to pay electricity once a month. Neighboring states pay electricity bill once a month. Look at the problems if you don’t pay electricity once a month. For example, I use 200 units of electricity in Coimbatore, if I pay electricity bill once a month it is ₹450, if I pay it for two months i.e. this month 200-unit next month 200 unit, when I pay electricity bill once in two months it is ₹1440 for 400 units. If you pay this once a month then this month 450 next month 450 total ₹900 for 200 units. But if you calculate it as 400-unit slab for two months, you have to pay 1440 rupees. 540 as a loss for using just 200 units. Let’s talk about 300 units now, the electricity bill for me is 705 rupees, which is 300 unit this month and 300 unit next month in DMK’s bi-monthly electricity tariff, if you pay for 600 unit means it is ₹2940. So, where is ₹1410 and where is ₹2940 rupees, in this we pay ₹1400 more.

Annamalai, further revealed that 17.5% of young people aged 15 to 29 in the state are unemployed. He emphasized the high rate of unemployment among graduates in Tamil Nadu, comparing it unfavorably to states like Gujarat (6.1%), Karnataka, and Maharashtra (7-8%). Annamalai called on the DMK government to acknowledge the unemployment crisis affecting 17.5 percent of Tamil Nadu’s population.

Annamalai also discussed the BJP’s growth in Tamil Nadu, likening it to nurturing a Chinese bamboo plant. He stressed the importance of patience and persistence in strengthening the BJP’s presence, despite challenges. He mentioned that despite setbacks, the BJP had secured the top position in 8000 booths during the last election, which he interpreted as a sign of growing support and influence in the state.

Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party President Annamalai has strongly criticized the DMK government for a notable decline in several key indicators of NITI Aayog’s Sustainable Development Goals. He emphasized that indicators such as the Gender Equality Index, Clean Water and Sanitation Index, Sustainable Cities and Communities Index, Responsible Consumption and Production Index, Life on Land Index, and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions have shown significant regressions compared to neighboring states.

Annamalai via his official X account stated that, “In the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indices published by NITI Aayog, it has been revealed that Tamil Nadu is lagging behind other states in many sectors. Specifically, it ranks 10th on the Gender Equality Index, 9th on the Clean Water and Sanitation Index, 10th on the Sustainable Cities and Communities Index, 10th on the Responsible Consumption and Production Index, 15th on the Life on Land Index, and 9th on the Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions Index, such that in many indices, Tamil Nadu lags behind other states.”

“Particularly, in the last three years the violence against women, children, scheduled and tribal communities has been reported to have increased significantly in Tamil Nadu. According to the report, the disappearance of children also increased by about 11%, and deaths due to road accidents and suicides in Tamil Nadu have increased significantly in the last three years. Apart from this, employment in the manufacturing sector has declined and innovation capacity has more than halved from 37.91% to 15.69% which is shocking,” he added.

“Apart from these, the low overall enrollment rate in higher education and poor language skills and math skills among eighth graders are of great concern. The increase in violence against scheduled and tribal communities shows the trend against social justice in Tamil Nadu. Moreover, it is very easy to realize that the basic reason behind the increase in violence against women and children and the increase in road accidents is the uncontrolled sale of alcohol, the sale of counterfeit liquor, and the sale of narcotics including ganja,” he further added.

The NITI Aayog report has reflected many of the things that the Tamil Nadu BJP has so far consistently pointed out in the DMK government’s administrative blunders and shortcomings. I urge the DMK government to take constructive steps keeping the welfare of the state in mind and not engage in diversionary efforts as usual,” he concluded.

However, Dravidianists on social media were seen sharing comparison charts of TN with the national average, which includes all 28 states, and were praising Tamil Nadu. They are overlooking the fact that when compared to neighboring states, Tamil Nadu’s performance was actually declining. For example, the DMK family-owned Sun News compared TN with the national average but failed to make the comparison with the state’s immediate neighbors which would have shown a grim picture.
