Following the recommendation of the Madurai Anti-Terrorism Squad and Tirunelveli City Commissionerate, the National Security Act (NSA) has been invoked against 42-year-old Imtiaz, who was arrested for inciting and orchestrating the petrol bomb attack at Alangar Theatre on Nethaji Road, Melapalayam, Tirunelveli. The attack took place during the screening of the Tamil movie Amaran and was allegedly aimed at disrupting religious harmony.

Tirunelveli City Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Vinoth Santharam, along with the Madurai Anti-Terrorism Squad and Additional Superintendent of Police Kuppusamy, recommended NSA action against Imthiyas. Based on this recommendation, Tirunelveli City Police Commissioner Santosh Hadimani approved the move, leading to his preventive detention at Palayamkottai Central Prison.

Background

On January 2024, authorities arrested Imtiaz, the key suspect in the petrol bomb attack that occurred in the early hours of 16 November 2024. During the screening of Amaran, unknown individuals hurled three petrol bombs at Alankar Theatre. Fortunately, no casualties or major property damage were reported.

Initially, the case was investigated by local police under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Vijayakumar, leading to the detention of two suspects. The case was later transferred to the Anti-Terrorism Squad, with a special team led by SP Ramesh Krishnan conducting a thorough probe in the Melapalayam area.

Investigations revealed that the attack was ideologically driven. Imthiyas, a resident of Al-Amin Nagar in Melapalayam, was identified as the mastermind behind the bombing. Authorities confirmed his alleged affiliation with a terrorist organization and his involvement in other pending cases.

After evading arrest for a significant period, Imthiyas was finally apprehended in Athur, Tuticorin district. Several individuals had already been arrested in connection with the attack, including Syed Mohammed Buhari, Mohammed Yusuf Rasheen, Kola Badusha, Sirajuddin, and Nisar—all from Melapalayam.

Authorities continue their investigation, focusing on uncovering further links and networks associated with the incident.

Two more individuals namely Mohammed Yusuf and Syed Mohammed Buhari were arrested in connection with the petrol bomb attack on the Alangar Theatre in Tirunelveli’s Melapalayam area that was screening ‘Amaran’.

On the morning of 16 November 2024, ‘unidentified individuals’ threw petrol bombs at the ‘Alangar’ theatre as it was showcasing ‘Amaran’, escalating tensions in the area. Special Forces and the Anti-Terrorism Squad began investigating the attack.

Based on CCTV footage from around the theatre, authorities arrested a total of three suspects and held them in a secure location for questioning. One of the suspects Rahim was found to have participated in the attack. After confirming that the bombing was a protest against the film Amaran, police continued searching for two additional individuals involved in the incident. Subsequently, Mohammed Yusuf and Syed Mohammed Buhari, both connected to the petrol bomb attack, were arrested.

According to a report by News Tamil 24×7, investigations have revealed that both Yusuf and Buhari have ties to banned terror organization Al Ummah. They had apparently met an individual belonging to Al Ummah who has been imprisoned in Bengaluru jail.

Al Ummah is a banned radical Islamist terror group which was responsible for the 1998 Coimbatore bombings. Al Ummah had connectivity with Directrate General of Forces Intelligence of Bangladesh (DGFI), Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). It is accused of bombing the RSS Chennai Karyalaya killing 11 persons. In 1995, the organization was involved in targeting filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s house with homemade bombs, protesting his film Bombay for depicting a romance between a Hindu man and a Muslim woman.

It is notable that this incident occurs against the backdrop of condemnation from a coalition of leftists, Islamists, and Dravidianists, who have expressed discomfort with the rise of nationalism fueled by the film ‘Amaran’ The movie, which tells the story of Major Mukund Varadharajan’s heroic sacrifice during a counter-terror operation in Shopian, Kashmir, has drawn criticism from these groups. Initially, these groups pushed the narrative that the film was “Islamophobic,” a claim that was baseless and misleading, which led Muslim leaders in the state to protest and demand a ban.

On the morning of 16 November 2024, ‘unidentified individuals’ threw petrol bombs at the ‘Alangar’ theatre as it was showcasing ‘Amaran’ in Melapalayam, Tirunelveli district, escalating tensions in the area.

The Melapalayam police have filed a case and launched an investigation into the attack. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify those responsible. The attack is believed to be linked to protests against the Tamil film ‘Amaran’, which has been criticized by some groups for its portrayal of Muslims. In response, additional security has been deployed to maintain order.

Tamil Nadu BJP Spokesperson ANS Prasad has called for a mandatory statewide Tamil movie ‘Amaran’ screening. Prasad emphasised the need to counter separatist agendas and defend national pride in the face of anti-Amaran propaganda in the state. Produced by Kamal Haasan and starring Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi, Amaran is a cinematic tribute celebrating India’s martyrs’ valour, filling Tamil hearts with pride. The film honours Major Mukund Varadharajan, a valiant son of Tamil Nadu, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight against terrorism.

Prasad highlighted that Amaran serves as a powerful reminder of our gratitude to such selfless heroes. “Security is paramount, whether for our homes or our nation,” Prasad stated. He noted that even residential complexes in cities like Chennai implement strict safety measures, such as video screenings for visitors, to ensure the safety of their residents. If stringent security is required for a small complex, Prasad argued, the scale of security necessary for a country with 1.4 billion people is enormous. Prasad went on to discuss external threats, specifically from Pakistan, which, he claimed, has been sponsoring terrorism within India and exploiting internal vulnerabilities. He pointed to Pakistan’s occupation of part of Kashmir and its efforts to infiltrate the rest of the region as further justification for increased vigilance. In the face of these threats, Prasad emphasised the dedication of India’s soldiers, who stand guard in the snow-capped mountains of Kashmir, ever-ready to protect the nation.

He argued that wealth and comfort mean nothing without national peace and cited the plight of refugees in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Israel, and Ukraine as a stark reminder of the importance of national security. According to Prasad, ‘Amaran’ instils a sense of patriotism and national pride in young people, asserting that the interests of the nation must come first. He condemned those spreading what he termed as “vile propaganda” against Amaran, accusing some critics of mischaracterising the film as anti-minority. “Amaran tells the story of a brave soldier, not the complex narrative of Kashmir,” he said, dismissing criticisms that expect exhaustive coverage of Kashmir’s issues in a 2.5-hour film. He argued that those opposing the film are attempting to undermine India’s unity and the integrity of its armed forces. Prasad stated that the issue of Kashmir is about national integrity, not minority rights, and he highlighted the forced expulsion and ignored rights of the Hindu minority in Kashmir. He urged Tamil Nadu’s authorities to reject any anti-India rhetoric disguised as film criticism, which he claimed undermines national harmony.

The BJP leader called upon the Tamil Nadu government to proactively support national unity by opposing separatist agendas disguised as criticism of ‘Amaran’. He also encouraged the state to promote patriotic films by granting tax exemptions and organising screenings in educational institutions, aiming to inspire youth to embrace patriotism and national unity for a stronger India. “The government should organise screenings of ‘Amaran’ in schools and colleges to inspire young people with the values of patriotism and unity,” Prasad concluded, “ensuring a stronger, united India.”
