Ahmedabad is reeling from the shock of a class 8 Muslim student stabbing to death a class 10 Hindu student at Seventh-Day Adventist School in the city.

According to reports, blood-soaked Nayan was lying in the school compound for more than 20 minutes, but the school management did not even bother to call an ambulance.

Early Wednesday morning, a large crowd of community members gathered outside the school, leading to protests that escalated into vandalism on the school premises. Reports indicate that some school staff were also assaulted during the demonstrations.

Police deployed a significant force to restore order, and clashes were reported between protesters and law enforcement. The accused student has been taken into custody, and authorities are proceeding under juvenile laws.

In the wake of the tragedy, parents and Hindu organizations have filed complaints against the school’s principal and management, seeking accountability for the incident.

Alleged screenshots of the stabber’s chat going viral on social media reveal he showed no remorse for his actions. India Today shared these screenshots as below:

Friend: Bhai, did you do something today?

Accused: Yes.

Friend: Did you stab someone?

Accused: Who told you?

Friend: Please call for a minute.

Accused: No, no. I am with my brother. He doesn’t know what happened today.

Friend: He (the victim) has died.

The accused then asked his friend how he had come to know about the incident. The friend replied that he had met a mutual acquaintance on the road, who had informed him about it.

Accused: Tell him (the common friend) that I killed him. He knows me, tell him right now.

Friend: What actually happened?

Accused: Arrey, he (the victim) asked me, “Who are you and what will you do?” etc.

Friend: ***** You can’t stab someone to death for this. You could have just beaten him up, not killed him.

Accused: Whatever happened has happened now.

Friend: Take care of yourself. Go underground for some time. Delete these chats.

Accused: Ok.

Negligence?

The victim’s family accused the school administration of gross negligence. They alleged that no ambulance was arranged and that the boy was left lying unconscious in a pool of blood until his relatives arrived. The family said they were forced to take him to hospital in an autorickshaw and claimed he might have survived had medical help been provided in time.

The boy’s grandfather alleged that despite serious injuries, the school authorities failed to act. He also accused the school’s security of being lax, claiming that students managed to bring in a weapon unchecked. He further alleged that the victim, who came from a vegetarian family, had earlier been deceived into consuming meat by fellow students.

Grandfather’s Statement

Speaking to OpIndia, the victim’s grandfather said, “A few days earlier, a Muslim student had quarrelled with my grandson while he was coming down the stairs after school, but later they made amends by apologising. Yesterday afternoon (around the time the school closed on the day of the incident), a group of Muslim boys with their faces covered attacked my grandson with a knife. How that boy entered school with a knife? That boy is in 8th standard, and my grandson is in 10th. The boy who stabbed was caught last night by police in Shah Alam area. We have requested the police that school will not reopen till we get justice.”

He also stated that the victim and his entire family were vegetarians, yet some Muslim students used to bring mutton to the school and mislead his grandson into eating it by claiming it was paneer.

Arrests

So far, two people have been arrested, and an FIR has been filed. Police have called in a forensic team to examine if bloodstains were tampered with at the scene. CCTV footage is being reviewed, and statements of nine staff and security personnel have been recorded. The District Education Officer has issued a notice to the school seeking a full report.

Several parents have since alleged that Tuesday’s stabbing was not an isolated incident. They claimed that past cases of violence and drug use involving students were ignored by the school. One parent alleged that her son was assaulted two months ago, but no disciplinary action was taken.

As the monsoon rains lash Ahmedabad, the city is witnessing a parallel surge in complaints related to stray dogs, mirroring the seasonal spike in stray cattle sightings on roads.

In the last four months, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has received 3,891 complaints about stray dog attacks. July alone accounted for 1,395 cases, marking a steep rise in incidents.

Citizens commuting on relatively empty roads at night have reported frequent encounters with aggressive dog packs, especially in residential and industrial pockets. The increasing threat has not only sparked concern but also coincided with an alarming number of dog bite incidents.

Sources reveal nearly 5,000 bite cases per month, pushing the total to over 20,000 in just four months. Despite ongoing sterilisation and vaccination drives, civic authorities admit the issue is far from resolved.

According to AMC data, only 2,412 dogs have been sterilised during this period. Here’s how the numbers stack up: Between April and early August, Ahmedabad recorded a fluctuating yet concerning trend in stray dog complaints and sterilisation efforts.

In April, the city received 727 complaints and carried out 549 sterilisations. The number of complaints rose in May to 911, with 572 dogs sterilised. June saw a slight dip, with 573 complaints and 537 sterilisations.

However, July marked the sharpest spike, with 1,395 complaints — the highest in the period — while sterilisation stood at 580. In the first few days of August, 155 complaints were logged, and only 74 dogs were sterilised.

These figures reflect a gap between the volume of complaints and the pace of sterilisation efforts, indicating the growing urgency of the stray dog issue in the city. While the sterilisation drive continues, many believe it is not keeping pace with the rising stray population.

Municipal estimates suggest there are over two lakh stray dogs on Ahmedabad’s streets. In response to this growing menace, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has spent more than Rs 9.36 crore over three years on stray dog control measures. The AMC pays Rs 976.50 per dog to contracted organisations for capturing and relocating stray dogs.

According to Shehzadkhan Pathan, the Leader of Opposition in the AMC, the corporation spent Rs 2.30 crore in 2020-21, Rs 2.56 crore in 2021-22, and Rs 4.5 crore in 2022-23 on tackling the issue. Despite the rising expenditure, residents say these efforts have provided little to no relief, as the problem continues to worsen across urban neighbourhoods.

Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani stated that the majority of rescue and relief operations were completed within just four hours, owing to rapid administrative coordination and prompt action, after the plane crash. Speaking to the media, Pani recalled that he immediately left for the crash site upon receiving the first alert. “Soon after I was informed of the incident, I received a call from the Chief Minister’s Office, followed by a directive from the Chief Minister himself, instructing immediate response,” he said. He emphasised that while en route to the site, he coordinated with all deputy municipal commissioners, district administration officials, fire, police, and health departments to activate a multi-agency response.

“Within minutes, the airport’s fire team reached the crash site, and soon after, over 100 firefighters were deployed to begin firefighting operations,” Pani said. He added that teams from the police, AMC, district administration, health services, NDRF, and SDRF were quickly mobilized and worked in close coordination. To facilitate rapid medical aid, a green corridor was created in coordination with the city’s Police Commissioner, ensuring that injured passengers could be transported swiftly to Civil Hospital. In total, 98 ambulances from both government and private agencies were dispatched to the site.

Firefighters rescued over 30 people trapped in buildings adjacent to the crash site. Commissioner Pani also detailed the deployment of over 45 heavy rescue machines, including earth movers, bulldozers, JCBs, and Hitachis. “Aircraft debris, including the wings obstructing roads, were cleared quickly, and damaged compound walls were removed to allow rescue vehicles access,” he added. Highlighting the importance of real-time coordination in disaster management, he said. “Senior officials from the CMO, Police Commissioner’s office, District Collectorate, and other key government departments were present on-site, enabling seamless inter-agency collaboration.” To support the families of victims, the administration set up a single-window system at Civil Hospital. “This has ensured that grieving families can access essential documents, including death certificates, without unnecessary delays or distress,” said the Commissioner.

The precise sequence of events following the takeoff of Air India Flight AI171 from Ahmedabad remains uncertain. However, aviation experts often stress that the moments immediately after liftoff are among the most dangerous. Tragically, on Thursday afternoon, this critical phase turned catastrophic when the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed just 1.5 km from the runway, prompting an international investigation.

Saligram J Murlidhar, a former Deputy Director at the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), speculated on a possible explanation. “One possible cause that comes to mind—though this is just a very preliminary assumption—is fuel contamination, which could fall under sabotage. If the fuel added was contaminated with water or other substances, the quantity might appear normal, but the contamination could prevent proper combustion,” he told IANS.

A joint inquiry is now underway, involving Indian authorities alongside specialists from the US and UK, to determine what caused the crash of the 12-year-old aircraft. The London-bound flight slammed into a hostel belonging to a medical college after crashing into a densely populated neighborhood in Ahmedabad, soon after departing from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. All 241 passengers and crew, along with several individuals on the ground, perished.

Rescue operations at the site continue under tight security, with DNA analysis being conducted to identify severely burned remains. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder—commonly known as black boxes—have been retrieved.

This tragedy marks the first fatal accident involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner since the aircraft’s debut in 2011. Around 1,200 units of the Dreamliner are in use globally. While Boeing has been criticized in the past for safety flaws in other models, the Dreamliner had maintained a flawless fatality record until this incident.

Coldplay’s recent performances in India, particularly their Ahmedabad concert on January 26th at the Narendra Modi Stadium, have proven to be a masterclass in event management. With over 2.5 lakh attendees, including 1.7 lakh visitors traveling from outside Gujarat, the British rock band’s Music of the Spheres world tour showcased India as a capable host for world-class events. Attendees praised the seamless experience, highlighting hassle-free roads, warm welcomes, and exceptional hospitality from autos to cabs, restaurants to street vendors, and hotels. Remarkably, not a single complaint about misbehavior, traffic issues, or mismanagement was reported over the two-day event.

In stark contrast, Diljit Dosanjh’s recent remarks about India’s inadequate concert infrastructure and AR Rahman’s disastrous Chennai show have come under scrutiny, fueling debate on the real challenges of live events in the country.

Coldplay’s Seamless Execution

The Ahmedabad concert, declared by Coldplay as theirbiggest-ever concert, featured dazzling lights, LED wristbands, and a meticulously designed stage. Chris Martin won hearts by addressing the crowd in Gujarati, saying, Tame logo aaje bada sundar laago cho. Hu tamare shahar ma aavyo chu. Kem cho, Ahmedabad? (You all look beautiful today. I’ve come to your city. How are you, Ahmedabad?).

The event’s execution was exemplary, with 3,800 police personnel and specialized National Security Guard contingents ensuring safety. Over 400 CCTV cameras provided 24/7 surveillance, and visitors enjoyed hassle-free experiences with smooth transportation, top-notch hospitality, and well-managed logistics.

Anand Mahindra shared aerial visuals of the packed stadium on social media, calling it a moment wherethe world discovered that India is the new frontier of live entertainment.Netizens echoed his sentiment, praising India’s capacity to host such large-scale events.

A Tight Slap To Diljit Dosanjh

Diljit Dosanjh had paused his December 14th Dil-Luminati concert in Chandigarh to criticize India’s infrastructure for live events, stating, “We don’t have the proper infrastructure for live shows here. Until then, I won’t be doing shows in India.” His comments have since drawn backlash, especially as Coldplay delivered an incident-free experience for one of the largest crowds ever hosted in India.

AR Rahman’s Chennai Concert: The Father Of All Fiascos

The stark contrast between Coldplay’s seamless Ahmedabad show and AR Rahman’s chaotic Marakkuma Nenjam concert in Chennai further underscores the importance of professional event management. Rahman’s concert on 10 September 2023, was marred by overcrowding, mismanagement, and safety lapses. Fans faced hours-long traffic jams, insufficient parking, and chaotic crowd management despite holding expensive tickets. Many were even reportedly being denied entry.

Several fans recounted harrowing experiences, including stampedes, children separated from parents, women molested in the crowd, and a lack of basic amenities. Many left the venue fearing for their safety, with some even fainting due to suffocation. Fans described being stranded for hours, unable to enter the overcrowded venue, and feared for their safety as reports of stampedes, missing children, and molestation emerged.

The organizers, ACTC Events, issued a tepid apology, while Rahman faced criticism for his silence. Fans demanded refunds and accused the event of being ascam, citing a similar fiasco during his Coimbatore concert. This stands in stark contrast to Coldplay’s meticulous planning and execution, which ensured a safe and enjoyable experience for fans.

Coldplay’s concerts have proven that India is not only ready for world-class live entertainment but is also capable of hosting events that rival global standards. Artists like Diljit Dosanjh and AR Rahman may want to revisit their strategies and event partners, as the success of Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour serves as a shining example of what’s possible with proper planning and professionalism.

India is no longer just a market for live entertainment; it is the new frontier—one that demands and deserves excellence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed Bhoomi Poojan of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II and Surat Metro Rail Project via video conference today. Gujarat Governor, Union Home Minister, Gujarat Chief Minister and Union Housing & Urban Affairs Minister were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister congratulated Ahmedabad and Surat for the gift of Metro as the service will improve connectivity in the two important business centers of the country. He also congratulated people of Gujarat for new trains and railway lines for Kevadiya including modern Jan Shatabdi from Ahmedabad to Kevadiya. The Prime Minister informed that today work started on infrastructure projects worth 17 thousand crore. This shows that even during Corona period, efforts for infrastructure building are gaining momentum. In recent days infrastructure projects worth thousands of crores were either dedicated to nation or work started on new projects.

Terming Ahmedabad and Surat as the cities contributing to Aatamnirbharta, The Prime Minister, recalled the excitement when Metro was launched in Ahmedabad and how Ahmedabad had linked its dreams and identity with Metro. The second phase of metro will benefit the people as it will link new areas of the city with this comfortable mode of transport. Similarly, Surat will also experience better connectivity. These projects are envisaged keeping in mind the requirement of the future, said the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister pointed out the difference in approach between the previous governments and the current one taking reference of Metro expansion. He said, as compared to 200 kilometer long Metro line in 10-12 years before 2014, 400 kilometer long Metro line has been operationalized in last 6 years alone. Government is working on 1000-kilometer new lines in 27 cities. He lamented the absence of integrated modern thinking earlier. There was no national policy for Metro. As a result, there was no uniformity in technique and systems of Metro in different cities. Second lacuna was absence of linkage with the rest of the transport system of the city. Today transportation is being developed as an integrated system in these cities, in which Metro will not function in isolation but will work as a collective system. This integration will be taken further by the recently launched National Common Mobility card, asserted the Prime Minister.

Taking the example of Surat and Gandhinagar, the Prime Minister also dwelled on the thinking of the government on urbanization which is not reactive but proactive and keeps the needs of future in mind. Only two decades ago, Surat was mentioned for it plague epidemic rather than its development. The Government, promoted its spirit of entrepreneurial inclusion and toady, Surat is not only 8th largest city of the country- population-wise but also the 4th fastest growing city of the world. 9 out every 10 diamonds are cut and polished in Surat. Similarly, 40 per cent of man-made fabric of the country is made in Surat as about 30 per cent man-made fiber is being produced there. Surat, today, is the second cleanest city of the country. The Prime Minister also elaborated upon efforts in housing for poor, traffic management, roads and bridges, sewage treatment and hospitals for enhancing the ease of living in the city. This became possible by better planning and holistic thinking, and Surat has turned out to be a great example of ‘Ek Bharat, Shresth Bharat’ as it is home to entrepreneurs and laborer from all parts of the country, said the Prime Minister.

Similarly, Prime Minister talked about the journey of Gandhinagar, which underwent a transformation from a city of government employees and retirees to a young vibrant city. Today, Gandhinagar is identified by renowned institutes like IIT, National Law University, NIFT, National Forensic Science University, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Indian Institute of Teacher Education, Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, National Institute of Design (NID), Raksha Shakti University etc. These institutions have not only transformed education landscape of the city but also brought companies to the campuses, increasing the employment avenues in the city. PM Modi also mentioned Mahatama Mandir which gave a push to conference-tourism. Projects like modern railway station. Gift City, Sabarmati River Front, Kankariya Lake Front, water aerodrome, bus rapid transit system, world’s largest stadium in Motera, six-lane Gandhinagar Highway have become Ahmedabad’s identity. The City is getting a modern makeover without sacrificing its old character, said the Prime Minister.

PM Modi also mentioned that Ahmedabad has been declared ‘World Heritage City’, and is getting a new airport in Dholera. The airport will get connected with Ahmedabad with already-approved Mono-Rail. Work is under progress on Bullet Train connecting Ahmedabad and Surat to the financial capital of the country- Mumbai.

The Prime Minister also took up the steps taken in the area of rural development. He termed the improvement brought in roads, electricity, water situation in Gujarat over the period of last two decades as an important chapter in the journey of Gujarat’s development. Today, every village of Gujarat is connected with all-weather road. Tribal villages too have better roads. Today, 80 percent of households in Gujarat have piped water. 10 Lakh water connections have been provided in the state under Jal Jeevan Mission. Soon every household will have water from tap.

Similarly, irrigation has seen new momentum as Sardar Sarovar Sauni Yojna and water grid network has taken irrigation water to dry areas. Narmada water has reached Kutch. Work has been done in micro-irrigation. Electricity is another success story and Gujarat is leading state in solar power. Recently, work was started on the world’s largest solar plant in Kutch. Gujarat is the first state in the country to give separate electricity for irrigation under Sarvodya Yojana.

The Prime Minister also enumerated steps in health sector such as Ayushman Bharat Scheme which has benefited 21 lakh people in the state. More than 500 Jan Aushadh Kendra’s saving about 100 crore for local patients. More than 2.5 lakh houses were built under PM Awas-Gramin. More than 35 lakh toilets  were built in the state under Swachch Bharat Mission.

The Prime Minister asserted that India is taking bold decisions and implementing them with speed. India is not only doing big but also, better, said the Prime Minister. He cited, world’s largest statue, world’s largest affordable housing programme, healthcare assurance programme, Internet connectivity in 6 lakh villages, recently launched worlds larges vaccination campaign as examples of this thinking.

He also mentioned Ro-pax ferry services between Hazira  and Ghogha and Girnar Rope-way as two examples which, through their swift implementation, changed the lives of the local people. These schemes have saved fuel and time as distance between Ghongha and Hazira got reduced from 375 km to 90 km by ferry. The service has been patronised by 50 thousand people in two months and 14 thousand vehicles were also ferried on the service. This has helped farmers and animal husbandry in the region. Similarly, Girnar Rope-way has been used by more than 2 lakh people in two and half months.

The goal of new India can only be achieved by working rapidly with understanding of people’s needs and aspirations, said the Prime Minister. PM Modi put forth his PRAGATI system as a step in this direction. PRAGATI has brought new momentum in the implementation culture of the country as it is chaired by the Prime Minister himself. Effort is to talk directly with the stakeholders and find solutions for the problems. In last 5 years we have reviewed projects worth rupees 13 lakh crore, said the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister emphasized that with solutions of long pending schemes, cities like Surat get new energy. Our industry, especially small-scale industry, MSME get the confidence that they have the support of good infrastructure when they compete globally. Under Aatmnirbhar Bharat Campaign, many steps have been taken to help these small industries as they have been provided easy loans worth thousands of crore to tide over the difficult times. They are being given great opportunities by steps like redefinition of MSME that has helped with the fear of expansion, as traders were weary of losing benefits if they grew bigger than the defined limit.  Government has removed these restrictions and has opened new avenues for them. Similarly, this redefinition has removed the distinction between manufacturing and service enterprise, creating new possibilities for the service sector. They are also being given preference in the government procurement. The Government is committed to provide opportunities to small industries to flourish and laborer working in these units should have better amenities and better life, concluded the Prime Minister.
