Vijayawada Police on Friday arrested YSR Congress Party leader Kukkala Vidyasagar following a complaint by Mumbai-based actress Kadambari Jethwani that she was mentally and physically harassed.

After registering a case of a complaint by the actress, police took up the investigation and finally arrested him on Friday.

Jethwani complained to the police on September 13 that a false case was registered against her by using forged documents and that she was mentally and physically harassed. YSRCP leader Vidyasagar, also said to be a film producer, was named accused number one in the case, registered by the actress. The remaining accused were mentioned as others in the FIR.

The state government on August 15 suspended three senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers following allegations that acting under political pressure, they arrested the actress and her parents, bypassing laid down procedures and protocol.

The actress was arrested on a complaint by Vidyasagar in February when YSRCP was in power.

The case was registered at Ibrahimpatnam police station under the NTR district for allegedly forging property documents, extorting money from Vidyasagar and cheating him.

Jethwani met with Andhra Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha on Thursday to request protection for herself and her family and demand Vidyasagar’s arrest.

She claimed that she and her family face danger from people they filed a case against.

Jethwani, who was behind bars for 42 days early this year, claimed that IPS officers and political leaders were involved in the alleged harassment.

She claimed that a false case was fabricated against her to coerce her into withdrawing a complaint of sexual assault she had lodged against a prominent corporate executive in Mumbai.

The actress and her parents were arrested in Mumbai by a team of Andhra Police officers. The police team was led by the then Vijayawada Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vishal Guni.

The state government on September 15 suspended P. Sitharama Anjaneyulu, the then Director General of Police, Intelligence, Kanthi Rana Tata, the then Commissioner of Police, Vijayawada and Vishal Gunni, then Deputy Commissioner of Police (Vijayawada).

The police will likely include the senior IPS officers as the accused in the case.

Meanwhile, Kranti Rana Tata has approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court seeking anticipatory bail. The court will hear the petition on Monday.

Reacting strongly to the recent comments by some foreign diplomats posted in India, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar said on Friday that the envoys and their leaders should also be prepared to hear India’s viewpoint about their country and the current political scene there.

I have no problems if people comment about our politics. But then, I think, in fairness, they should also be ready to hear my comments about their politics. So, how to get a more mutually respectful world, more equal.. Because everybody says that we are equal but they don’t actually behave like that. It is a bit like Animal Farm – some are more equal than others,” the EAM said at an interaction with the Indian community in Geneva.

Jaishankar, on the last leg of his three-nation tour, was replying to a question on foreign diplomats in New Delhi often expressing their viewpoint about Indian politics.

Countries often practice abroad what they are sensitive to at home. So, whenever people do any such thing, they must also think about what would happen, if this happened in their own home. It is something that they should think about,” added EAM Jaishankar.

During the event organised by India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva, the EAM also highlighted achievements and big initiatives of the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the last ten years.

Our high-speed road corridors in the last ten years have increased eight times with 28 kms of highways being added every day. From six metros in 2014, we have now 21. The port handling has doubled in this period and we are now building around seven to eight new airports yearly. The infrastructure that has held us in the past is now changing,” said Jaishankar.

The EAM then went on to give the audience some more numbers, giving an indication of the progress being made back home.

From 387 Medical colleges ten years ago, we have 706 now. The All India Medical Institutes have actually tripled from seven to 22. The higher secondary schools have grown with 60 per cent and school enrollments have more girls than boys. Whatever was the baseline of 2014 has actually doubled in the last 10 years. We have today the confidence and experience to do much better,” he added.

The minister mentioned that poverty remains a “big challenge” even though 250 million people have escaped poverty since 2014. He also mentioned setting up 12 industrial zones across the country, which would attract global manufacturing.

In many cases, we are correcting historical shortcomings. Look at the Western coast of India. There are virtually no deep water ports along the entire Western coastline. Considering that so much of our shipping goes out to the Gulf and the Western world, it is something which is a prime need and yet was not addressed for so long. Now, we have plans to develop the whole port network,” the EAM stated.

All of this, he remarked, requires hard work and doesn’t happen in a day.

There is a big debate in our country about manufacturing. There are people who ask why we are importing so much from China? Part of it is because we neglected manufacturing through the 1960s, 80s, 90s and even in the first decade of 2000. When did we have governments which actually made a major push on manufacturing?

Yet, people come today and say that we need to find a fix as if this is something that you can do instantaneously. Some even say that we are incapable and should not even attempt it. Ask yourself, can you actually be a major power without manufacturing? Major power needs technology and nobody can develop technology without manufacturing. So, you have to build human resources, infrastructure, and have those policies because life is not that khatakhat, it is hard work,” he added.

The Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President K Annamalai has been unveiling a sequence of audio recordings, revealing discussions between high-ranking members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the former Tamil Nadu intelligence chief, Jaffar Sait. The most recent audio segment marks the fifth tape in the DMK Files-3 series, showcasing yet another conversation between DMK Member of Parliament A. Raja and the former Intelligence Chief Jaffar Sait IPS.

These conversations occurred during the 2G probe and seem to prove that the probe was manipulated. In this recently released clip, the conversation centres on A Raja and Jaffar Sait discussing a potential test run of a CBI raid in Tamil Nadu. A Raja expresses his concern and informs Jaffar Sait about the possibility of a raid taking place across various locations associated with him. They discuss the urgency of alerting others and preparing for the situation. A Raja mentions the challenge of reaching a specific person (referred to as “our friend”) and expresses the need to convey the message discreetly. The conversation suggests a level of secrecy and caution, with A Raja emphasizing the use of a safe phone number for communication. They discuss the potential timing and scale of the raid, with A Raja indicating that it involves 10 to 12 simultaneous searches. The overall tone suggests a sense of urgency and the need for discreet communication in the face of an impending event. The transcript of the conversation is given below.

A Raja: Sir, I think there will be a small test run (CBI Raid) in Tamil Nadu tomorrow.

Jaffar Sait (JS): What is it, Sir?

A Raja: I think there will be a test run throughout Tamil Nadu.

JS: Is it tomorrow?

A Raja: Test run.

JS: Where?

A Raja: All the places associated with me.

JS: Oh, places associated with you is it?

A Raja: Yes. I haven’t conveyed the message yet. I do not know how to convey this message.

JS: Oh, oh.

A Raja: To close the procedure…

JS: Okay, okay.

A Raja: There will be a test run I guess. I am also struggling now, ‘our person’ has switched off his mobile. He knows the phone number of our leader.

JS: Okay, through whom?

A Raja: Does he have any other number?

JS: Who?

A Raja: Our friend. Your friend.

JS: You mean my friend?

A Raja: No, no. Our friend from perambalur (Sadiq Batchas’s & A Raja’s associate in Perambalur).

JS: I don’t think there is another number.

A Raja: I couldn’t reach his number.

JS: Oh.

A Raja: Hmm.

JS: Okay… that means.

A Raja: I thought of alerting everyone somehow.

JS: I’ll convey the message by some other means.

A Raja: I already informed.

JS: Okay.

A Raja: I informed last week itself. Told them to keep everything in a bag and be ready (to move).

JS: Okay

A Raja: But still now…

JS: There is no time now. Probably around 6’O clock.

A Raja: There is no bad intention.

JS: Okay.

A Raja: I have to accept all the truth before the court.

JS: Okay. We shall complete it by 6 or 6:30 in the morning.

A Raja: They are planning to raid 10 to 12 places simultaneously.

JS: Okay.

A Raja: Okay let’s see. I tried to reach him but couldn’t.

JS: Okay. sir

A Raja: I think he was awake whole night to call and alert his people.

JS: I’ll try to reach him by other means.

A Raja: I don’t know. I couldn’t reach him on his usual number. Let’s see.

JS: Okay, sir

A Raja: I’m talking to you on this number because it is safe.

JS: Okay. sir

The series of audio recordings has surprised many, creating internal shock within the DMK party, particularly in the context of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. However, both the DMK and the mainstream Tamil media seem undisturbed by these revelations. The DMK has chosen not to offer any remarks on the audio clips, skillfully deflecting questions from reporters. Party members, without indicating approval or disapproval, are maintaining a composed silence, employing a practiced approach that appears to be a developed strategy over the years.

Annamalai had earlier released audio tapes of conversations that occurred during the 2G probe that seem to prove that the probe was manipulated.

Announcing the initial release of several audio clips, Annamalai unveiled a recording featuring conversations involving DMK MP TR Baalu and Jaffar Sait.

On 21 February 2024, Jairam Ramesh, a senior Congress leader, declared a temporary suspension of Rahul Gandhi’s ambitious “Bharat Nyay Jodo Yatra” as he embarked on a visit to the United Kingdom. Ramesh clarified that the University of Cambridge had extended an invitation to Rahul Gandhi, who would be delivering two lectures at the prestigious academic institution.

Congress general secretary for communication Jairam Ramesh posted on his official X handle that, “February 26th to March 1st will be break days to enable Rahul Gandhi to fulfil his long-standing commitment to deliver two special lectures at his alma mater Cambridge University (UK) on February 27th and February 28th and also to enable him to attend other important meetings in New Delhi,”

Later on subsequent days entrepreneur Venkata “Serish” Gandikota shared a photo capturing Rahul Gandhi strolling alongside Sam Pitroda, the Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, and journalist Shruti Kapila. In his post, Gandikota remarked on the unusual sight of Rahul Gandhi and Sam Pitroda walking casually in Cambridge without the usual presence of security personnel.

Later with substantiated claims from state Congress units and ardent Congress supporters proudly promoted Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Cambridge University, likening it to the arrival of a new professor in the town.

However, in a statement exclusively given to OpIndia, Jesus College has officially stated that there was no official invitation extended to Rahul Gandhi by Cambridge University for any participatory event. This disclosure arises amid speculations about the nature of Rahul Gandhi’s involvement in the Cambridge University Lectures.

The spokesperson from Jesus College, University of Cambridge, has clarified that Rahul Gandhi’s participation was arranged externally through a commercial booking, and the College had no involvement in its planning or funding. This statement stands as concrete evidence refuting any assertions of an official invitation, providing clarity on the actual nature of the hosted event.

The same was also confirmed by another news outlet The Pamphlet and a social media handle The Hawk Eye.

The Mysterious UK Visit Busted

The enigma shrouding Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit to the UK is not unfamiliar, as he has a history of making cryptic journeys to foreign nations, often strategically timed with the Congress party’s needs. It’s unsurprising that he temporarily diverted from his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ to impart ‘special lectures’ at the University of Cambridge. However, the assertion of being ‘invited’ by the prestigious institution raises eyebrows. The University’s last tweet mentioning Rahul Gandhi dates back to May 2022, and the Judge School of Business posted about an event featuring him in February 2023.

Nevertheless, on this occasion, there were no recent mentions or updates about Rahul Gandhi on the University of Cambridge’s X  handle or its affiliated colleges. OpIndia managed to uncover discussions involving other guests but found no trace of the Congress scion Rahul Gandhi.

OpIndia conducted a thorough analysis of images shared by Congress loyalists on social media, raising suspicions about Rahul Gandhi’s purported lecture at the University of Cambridge.

By close examination OpIndia identified the location as the Jesus College of the University of Cambridge, specifically in the Elena Hall (conference room) and verified through a 360-degree tour available on the college’s website.

Despite expectations of official posts on the X handle of Jesus College regarding Rahul Gandhi’s visit, the search with the keyword ‘Rahul Gandhi’ yielded ‘no results.’ Further investigation revealed that Jesus College administration permits commercial activities, including presentations, meetings, events, and group dining, in its conference halls and grounds. This suggests that booking various venues with en-suite accommodation at the Jesus College is open to anyone, implying the possibility of the event being a commercially arranged activity rather than an official invitation.

In the midst of the growing mystery surrounding Rahul Gandhi’s recent covert foreign visit, the Indian Overseas Congress took the lead in sharing outdated images, aiming to deceive the public by suggesting that the Congress MP received a lavish welcome at the University of Cambridge. The move was a subtle attempt to create the impression that Rahul Gandhi had recently been invited by the University.

To substantiate these questionable assertions, the X handle of the Indian Overseas Congress shared images from May 2022, featuring Rahul Gandhi, the Congress-friendly ‘journalist’ Shruti Kapila, and Sam Pitroda. Additionally, they attached an image with the caption ‘India at 75,’ clearly indicating that the photograph was taken in 2022.

Upon deeper investigation, OpIndia debunked this initiative, uncovering the complete recording of the event held at the Corpus Christi College of the University of Cambridge on 22nd May 2022. This recording was found on the official YouTube channel of the Indian National Congress. As netizens exposed the misleading nature of the Indian Overseas Congress’s claims, the tweet was promptly deleted, with no accompanying apology or clarification.

OpIndia, after uncovering inconsistencies in Congress’s claims of Rahul Gandhi delivering ‘special lectures’ at the University of Cambridge, reached out to Jesus College for clarification. Questions about the booking details, event organizers, invitation, attendees, and expenses were posed. In response, Jesus College confirmed that the event at Elena Hall for Rahul Gandhi was a paid external booking, emphasizing that the college had no role in organizing or financing the event.

This revelation makes it evident that Rahul Gandhi was not invited by the University of Cambridge for a ‘special lecture,’ but instead participated in a paid event during a pause in his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.’

Under the banner of “Stalin’s voice to restore rights – let fascism fall,” as part of the theme “Let I.N.D.I.Ally Win,” Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is organizing public meetings across all 37 parliamentary constituencies. This extensive series of gatherings is scheduled to span three days starting from 16 February 2024, throughout Tamil Nadu, where regular public meetings will be conducted to address various issues and engage with the public.

Once again, the DMK’s platform featured inflammatory speech by DMK leader and head of Tamil Nadu Textbook Corporation Dindigul Leoni during a speech in Kanyakumari on 16 February 2024. He made derogatory remarks directed at the Prime Minister especially targeting the Ram temple. Castiest comments aimed at the Brahmin community, ridiculing their dialect, were also made. The office of the governor and its institution were mocked, and former chief ministers Edappadi Palanisami (EPS) and O Paneerselvam (OPS) were verbally abused. Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai was also a target of the attack, delivered by none other than the Tamil Nadu Textbook corporation head.

Abusing PM Modi

Commencing his speech, he began by recounting a story about a thief seeking refuge in a temple after a robbery. Drawing a parallel, he likened Modi to that thief, claiming that Modi, who allegedly “sold India to corporates,” is now hiding inside the Ram temple, in Ayohdya. He said that both the people of Tamil Nadu and India would not trust such innocent theatrics. Additionally, he asserted that the construction of the Ram temple was incomplete, stating that it was not fully built.

Whatever he has inaugurated is all half-baked. Ram Temple. You must’ve seen people doing all crimes and finally hiding in a temple. This guy committed all robbery and hid inside the temple, the thief….. Like that, a trader who traded India to corporate companies, today he is hiding inside Ram Temple to try and prove that he is innocent. Not just Tamil people, but no Indian would fall for this drama.“, he said.

He then proceeded to mockingly ridicule the consecration of Ram Mandir using Brahmin slang citing Shankaracharya.

He also questioned why President Droupadi Murmu was not called and swiftly likening it to an act of caste discrimination.

Narendra Modi is a man who cheated Ram himself. He betrayed Ram himself.“, he said.

Under the guise of comedy, he mocked an individual crossing in an ambulance, suggesting that he would be cured by witnessing a DMK stage speech. However, he implied that if the person had seen speeches from ADMK or BJP, their fate would be sealed.

Mocking Governor And Its Institution

He likened the governor of Tamil Nadu to a roadside vendor who sells herbal medicine for constipation(Legiyam Seller)

Hon’ble Governor RN Ravi. When I see him, I am reminded of this.. In markets you will have people who sell things rice, chillies, coriander, onion. They would be doing their selling and people will buy and go. After 6:30 PM, you’ve must seen one man will come holding petromax light, to sell legiyam (herbal medicine). He won’t be selling like other vendors. He is of a different type.” and goes on to disgustingly elaborate how they sell herbal medicine meant for constipation.

In the morning, you will be going to the toilet with a bucket and sit down after centering yourself. You will be bending and struggling and doing all sorts of things but ‘matter’ won’t come instead sounds of ‘damaar, dumaar, dumeer’ will come. People would be struggling in the bathroom without the matter coming down. If you eat our legiyam once in the morning and once in the night with one jug of hot water, before you even sit down (to shit), just like how coins fall out of the poket of a Naatukottai Chettiar, it will keep falling down. He would be selling some coloured water saying this. Like this legiyam seller is our Hon’ble Governor RN Ravi.” he narrates.

Leoni in his speech said that the Governor has limited responsibilities, such as appointing the council of ministers, endorsing suggestions from the chief minister, proroguing the state legislative assembly, and reading statements provided by the chief minister. Finally, as a university chancellor, he should only attend graduation ceremonies, but beyond these duties he does everything.

He also ridiculed him citing three instances. Firstly, in a statement, the Governor claimed that Thiruvalluvar was an heir of Sanathana Dharma. Secondly, he stated that Vallalar is the epitome of Sanathana Dharma. While expressing these views, he mocked the manner in which the governor delivered his speech, attempting to speak in Tamil despite being from a non-Tamil-speaking state.

Mockery Of EPS And OPS

While speaking of ADMK leader Edappadi Palaniswami he said that we need not watch Vadivelu comedy as watching this group is enough.

He went on to provide inappropriate examples, likening the relationship between Edappadi Palanisami and O Paneerselvam to that of a mentally challenged husband and wife, all in the guise of mockery and humor. He also proposed that both of them could beg Nagaswami Temple, considering their strained relationship, as they avoid talking to each other and harbor bitterness while sitting next to each other in the state legislative assembly.

Annamalai The Goat Will Be Slaughtered

Dindigul Leoni narrates a tale of a cow and a goat in a village, portraying the cow’s sadness as it felt neglected compared to the attention given to the goat, which was revered for worship in the temple. He says that over time, the goat became plump and fluffy, and one day the priest took it in a village procession which the goat thought the village was celebrating him. However, to the cow’s realization, the priest held a sickle (Arival), signifying the impending sacrifice and death of the goat. Drawing a parallel, he likened the sacrifice of the goat to Annamalai at the end of the “En Mann En Makkal” yatra and the eventual failure of the BJP and the triumph of the I.N.D.I. Alliance.

The end of En Mann En Makal yatra is that, Annamalai the goat will be slaughtered and in 2024 BJP will face a massive defeat and the I.N.D.I. Alliance will emerge victorious“, he concluded his speech.

The Tamil nadu Bharatiya Janata Party president K Annamalai has been releasing a series of audio recordings of conversations between DMK top brass and the ex-TN intelligence chief Jaffar Sait. The latest audio clip is the fourth tape in the DMK Files-3 series. The audio clip features another conversation between DMK MP A. Raja and ex-Intelligence Chief Jaffar Sait IPS.

These conversations occurred during the 2G probe and seem to prove that the probe was manipulated.

In this recently released clip, the conversation centres on Raja cautioning Jaffar about the upcoming raid, advising him to take preemptive measures to eliminate and relocate vital pieces of evidence involving someone named KCP aka KC Palanisamy, a DMK MP and Raja’s relatives. Jaffar expresses uncertainty and asks if it was confirmed, to which Raja mentions it was not confirmed but speculates it will happen the next day or the day after. Raja suggests intervening with Ahmed Patel and mentions receiving two sheets, possibly related to the event. Jaffar questions why KCP was involved, and Raja mentions the involvement of a diary. There is an interruption, and when the conversation resumes, Raja confirms informing KCP about the situation. Jaffar expresses concern about potential problems, given KCP’s involvement in big-time business. Raja acknowledges the uncertainty of the situation and mentions that the information comes from a reliable source. The transcript of the conversation is given below.

A Raja: sir.

Jaffar Sait (JS): Tell me sir.

A Raja: Nothing… there seems something tomorrow.

JS: Where sir?

A Raja: Including KCP (KC Palanisamy)

JS: Is it?

A Raja: Yes

JS: Is it confirmed sir?

A Raja: I guess it will there tomorrow or day after that

JS: Ok

A Raja: If that’s the case somebody should intervene with Ahmed Patel

JS: Yes sir

A Raja: Received two sheets. Speak with Ahmed Patel and there may be tomorrow again

JS: Where will be tomorrow sir?

A Raja: It will be here with relatives of mine

JS: Ok

A Raja: And KCP

JS: But why KCP sir?

A Raja: The diary. (Interruption and long pause)

A Raja: Hello

JS: Sir

A Raja: There are entries in the diary.

JS: Oh god

A Raja: I informed them.

JS: Oh, you informed to KCP  side?

A Raja: Yes I informed him

JS: They are into big league, sir. It would create problem?

A Raja: What?

JS: They are into big-time business. On what basis will they go there?

A Raja: They may ask some questions. I do not know what will they ask, though. Let’s see

JS: Is this news confirmed sir?

A Raja: Sir, the person who told me this the other day told me today.

JS: Oh, then it must be correct.

A Raja: They will go to my relatives places.

JS: Let them go. But KCP?

A Raja: He said specifically it would be KCP and your relatives.

JS: Oh let us see sir.

The sequence of audio recordings has left many, including the DMK party internally astonished, especially during the lead-up to the Lok Sabha polls. Despite this, both the DMK and the mainstream Tamil media appear undisturbed. The DMK has refrained from providing any comments on the audio clips, skillfully sidestepping the topic when questioned by reporters. Without expressing approval or disapproval, party members are adopting a stoic silence, a practiced approach they seem to have honed over the years. The hyperlinks to the first, second and third tapes are provided below.

Annamalai had also released an audio clip featuring DMK MP TR Baalu and Jaffar Sait.

In Tamil Nadu, it is often said that the two Dravidian parties maintain a close relationship, acting like brothers who only permit each other to succeed and handling serious issues with minimal criticism. Recent discussions circulating on social media in Tamil Nadu suggest that the DMK and AIADMK are allegedly formulating a plan to counter the growing influence of the BJP in the state. Multiple sources now support and confirm these speculations.

Several instances of ADMK’s past positions, the differences with O Paneerselvam and the more recent issue of the ADMK voicing its dissent to the One Nation One Election policy, it is noteworthy that rather than leading the opposition and robustly criticizing the government to demonstrate strength, Edappadi Palanisami, appears to be focused on consolidating his supporters within the party to secure and maintain his position as the General Secretary. It is also noteable that those who backed him also faced expulsion from the party. Sasikala, who nominated him for the position of Chief Minister, was removed. Dinakaran was also ousted, and O Paneerselvam, who persisted in his fight until the end, was eventually expelled. In the end, they also severed ties with the BJP party that had formed an alliance with them

The ADMK, founded by MG Ramachandran, initially emerged in opposition to the DMK led by Karunanidhi. Following MGR, J Jayalalitha continued the party’s tradition of staunchly opposing the DMK. Whenever she assumed office as the Chief Minister, Jayalalitha would vociferously denounce the DMK, often leading to the imprisonment or legal troubles of former ministers. For instance, during her tenure, the case against the former Higher Education minister Ponmudi was initiated. However, the current General Secretary, Edappadi Palanisami, seems to have deviated from this historical stance, leaving party members and supporters feeling betrayed. It is worth a mention that the ADMK voters never cast their votes specifically for Edappadi Palanisami but rather for the party’s two-leaf symbol.

On 12 February 2022, Edappadi Palanisami announced that the conclusion of the current DMK administration would coincide with the completion of 27 new moons (approximately 2 years). At that point, the state assembly and parliamentary elections would merge, leading to the concept of “One Nation, One Election” (ONOE). He urged ADMK members to be prepared for this upcoming scenario, initiating a campaign to that effect. While representing the ADMK in the state legislative assembly, MLA Thalavai Sundaram spoke when Chief Minister MK Stalin presented a resolution opposing the idea of One Nation One Election.

Thalavai Sundaram’s stance where he initially seemed to support the ONOE and flipping to another stance wherein he mentioned in the Assembly that the support would be offered after a 10-year period after assessing the advantages and disadvantages of the measures taken for their 10 requests is also seen as a move by EPS to cozy up with the DMK.

In 2022, the ADMK initially expressed support for ONOE, but later reversed its position, citing questionable reasons and aligning itself with the DMK’s stance.

DMK in its election campaigns have often made a significant promise was made that if the party came to power, ministers from the ADMK, especially Edappadi Palanisami, would be sent to jail. However, despite the DMK being in power for two years now, no ministers have been arrested or faced charges so far. The converse is also true – Edappadi Planisami adopted a similar position during his earlier term as Chief Minister. This was evident when crucial cases involving prominent DMK ministers such as Thangam Thennarasu, KKSR Ramachandran, and Ponmudi were left purposefully unresolved under his leadership. Therefore, it can be deduced that both parties are currently demonstrating a strong sense of camaraderie by mutually assisting each other.

Contrary to the former Chief Minister Jayalalitha, Edappadi Palanisami failed to address pressing issues like custodial deaths, deaths of pregnant mothers at government hospitals adequately. Instead, he cautiously released statements and distanced himself from the matter.

It seems as if the amicable relationship between Edappadi Palanisamy’s AIADMK and the DMK is mutually advantageous with EPS doing everything he can to strengthen his position, while Stalin’s DMK is also solidifying its position. This collaboration allows Stalin to strategically position his son Udhayanidhi as the potential successor in the future.

On 15 February 2024, Dinamalar covered an initiative by both the DMK and ADMK to counter the increasing influence of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, drawing connections to recent events. In a twist of events, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami appointed former minister Udayakumar as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, a role initially intended for O Panneerselvam in the Assembly. However, Chief Minister Stalin unexpectedly endorsed this move, citing consideration of ADMK’s request.

Former Minister KP Munusamy emphasized in the assembly the need for ADMK to limit its criticism of the government, advocating for a collaborative approach between the ruling and opposition parties to prevent external forces from gaining traction. Sengottaiyan, another ex-minister, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that either the DMK or ADMK should govern Tamil Nadu, excluding others. In a concerted effort to hinder the BJP’s rise to the second position in Tamil Nadu politics, Palaniswami and the ADMK have seemingly eased off on pursuing corruption cases, Kodanad murder, and robbery cases involving former ministers, according to the report.

Following Jayalalitha’s demise, the DMK and its coalition partners have openly deliberated on the BJP’s efforts to capitalize on the vacuum created by the absence of ADMK. The rift between ADMK and BJP intensified with Annamalai assuming the presidency of Tamil Nadu BJP in 2021, resulting in the BJP independently participating in the urban local body elections conducted in February 2022.

In addition to this, following Dinamalar’s article that claimed that the DMK and ADMK were working together to bring down a third party that prevented their success, ADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami stated that Dinamalar was the mouthpiece of the BJP akin to Murasoli that is the mouthpiece of the DMK.

The Commune conversation on December 2023  with Pradeep Bhandari, the founder of Jan Ki Baat that specializes in election surveys and predictions, the discussion revolved around the upcoming elections and future predictions. When we asked Pradeep Gandhi if Sonia Gandhi would win in Raebareli, Pradeep confidently said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if the Congress loses Raebareli this time as well.”

Pradeep’s foresight proved accurate, with Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, opting for a Rajya Sabha seat on 14 February 2024 just a month before the expected Lok Sabha election schedule announcement. This surprising move comes as a departure from seeking re-election from Raebareli, a constituency she has held since 2004, leading to speculation and astonishment within the party.

Pradeep Bhandari also carried detailed reports from ground zero (Raebareili) where it was revealed that Sonia Gandhi had visited her constituency only once. The state of the roads in the constituency were telling.

After the prediction becoming viral, Sonia Gandhi decided to compete from Rajasthan that too on a Rajya Sabha ticket. It is said that Rajasthan is a state where the Congress stands a strong chance of securing one of the three available seats in the elections scheduled for 27 February 2024.

Despite suggestions from the Karnataka and Telangana units of the party for Sonia’s candidacy in the Rajya Sabha polls in their respective states, the party opted against it due to the presence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in Karnataka and Rahul Gandhi serving as an MP from Kerala. Within the Congress, there is a belief that Sonia’s decision to contest from Rajasthan is intended to affirm the Gandhi family’s connection to the Hindi heartland, particularly in response to the criticism faced by Rahul for contesting from Wayanad and Amethi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

In the 2019 elections, the Congress faced a substantial setback in the Hindi heartland. Rahul Gandhi, the party’s prominent leader, suffered a defeat in Amethi, losing to Smriti Irani. The party encountered a lack of success in securing any seats in Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi. It managed to win only one seat each in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, and secured two seats in Chhattisgarh.  Indian Express reported that Rahul might choose to contest once again from Amethi and Wayanad, while Priyanka Gandhi could potentially take her mother’s place in Raebareli.

Sonia Gandhi’s Electoral Journey

Sonia Gandhi, who initially entered the political arena as an MP from Amethi in 1999 before transitioning to represent Raebareli in 2004, is poised to make history as the second member of the Nehru-Gandhi family to enter the Rajya Sabha, emulating the path of her mother-in-law, the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Traditionally, the Gandhi family has sought political backing from southern states during challenging periods, yet the Rajya Sabha route has been infrequently chosen. Indira Gandhi herself embarked on this route early in her political career, successfully contesting and winning from Karnataka in 1978. Later, in 1980, she strategically opted for Medak in undivided Andhra Pradesh. Similarly, in 1999, Sonia Gandhi chose Bellary in Karnataka when she made her entry into politics.

Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party President K. Annamalai commenced his “En Mann En Makkal Yatra” on 28 July 2023, with an expected conclusion on 18 February 2024. The procession covers all 234 constituencies of Tamil Nadu. Currently, Annamalai has traversed over 189 constituencies and is entering the northern part of Tamil Nadu, approaching Chennai. All through the yatra, he provided constructive criticism against the ruling DMK government, functioning akin to an opposition party. His efforts have brought the Tamil Nadu BJP to the doorsteps of many citizens, making the party’s presence felt across the state.

One such incident unfolded in the Thiruvallur district when Annamalai was scheduled to visit on 8 February 2024 the local body was swiftly doing their work, where local residents expressed their concerns to reporters, asserting that they had never had proper roads in the area. Interestingly, the local body swiftly displayed interest in laying a road, citing preparations for the New Moon Chariot function. However, citizens narrated a contrasting story, raising doubts about the true intentions behind the sudden road construction.

A resident named Rajesh conveyed to the media, “My name is Rajesh and I live in this area, this morning they suddenly laid the road. When I asked, they said Annamalai was visiting the area so they were laying the road, but when I asked the municipality, they said that the road was being laid for the temple chariot. The temple chariot had run for so many new moons but never one was the road laid. Now that Annamalai is coming, they have anxiously laid the road. The municipality does not know what is going on, so as soon as when they hear Annamalai is coming they lay the road. But the road was not paved when the chariot arrived. This road was full of pits and potholes but no one came to inspect it. Now, as soon as they have put a stage here, the municipality lays the road and pretends to “make-up” the road. Here school students and common people walk, they did nothing but today they are making it up.”

Kumar, another resident who works as an auto driver, said, “The road has not been laid all this while, today they are laying the road as Annamalai is expected to come here and they are doing everything. Do you know how waterlogged it gets during the rains? But they are laying the road only now, if you ask them they say it is for the chariot, but the chariot festival is only on Saturday, but they are laying it today. I don’t know what the case is but if you ask them, it must be Annamalai’s arrival. All these days they did not lay the road, but today they are laying the road as Annamalai is coming. Because he will ask about it, why this road is not good? It seems that he is coming on foot, so he will ask what is wrong with the road. They immediately brought soil and did everything. I don’t know what is what, you have to make a decision.

The prompt response from the municipality seems to stem from Annamalai’s practice of sharing his views and understanding of each constituency or district he visits, critically examining its socio-economic and political aspects. He has been outspoken in criticizing sitting ministers and MLAs for corruption, scams, embezzlement, and family dynasties, and exposing falsehoods and narratives. With the looming Lok Sabha elections, the ruling DMK government is cautious not to provide any room for political discussions by Annamalai, particularly as he approaches the DMK stronghold of Chennai. The swift action can be attributed to the political pressure and the government’s desire to preempt any potential impact on the upcoming elections.

In a recent development, the official spokesperson of DMK and joint secretary of the media wing of the part, Saravanan Annadurai, shared on his X handle that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s statement claiming a 192% increase in state finance sharing is solely attributed to inflation. He also reiterated the narrative that the BJP is allegedly exploiting Tamil Nadu’s tax revenue, echoing the common sentiment that the central government is encroaching on state rights.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s statement news card shared by News18Tamilnadu stated, “Tax Distribution to Tamilnadu: ₹94,977 crore from 2004 to 2014 and ₹2,77,444 crore from 2014 to 2024.

Financial assistance to Tamil Nadu: This is 192% more. 57,924.42 crore from 2004 to 2014 to 2,30,893 crore from 2014 to 2023, an increase of 300% in nine years”.

In response to that, Saravanan wrote, “This is because of inflation! There was no GST from 2004 to 2014; the state governments were directly collecting the tax revenue. Now the Union government is giving it. The sun rises in the east from 2014-2024. BJP’s record is as absurd as it gets. #BJPLootingOurTax”

In response, SG Suryah, the State Secretary of Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party, accused Saravanan of spreading lies, emphasizing the direct flow of Excise Duty and Service Tax to the Central Government even before the GST regime.

Surya wrote, “1 Tweet, 100 Lies Mr. @saravofcl? What’s this? SGST directly goes to State Govts in the GST regime. Before 2014, Excise Duty & Service Tax from Tamil Nadu directly went to the TN Treasury? Is it a joke? It directly went to the Central Govt. even before the GST regime.”

Netizens who read the post and discerned the bias in Saravanan’s statement criticized and ridiculed him for his lack of knowledge.

A netizen remarked, “50% of GST goes to state directly. Even some share of central GST component is shared with state.  Do you comprehend vandu murugan?”

Another netizen unveiled his exposed his contradictory statement and remarked “Does a 10 percent rise in inflation mean a 194 percent rise? So admit that today’s NDA government has given more money than the previous UPA government”

Another netizen shed light on the unethical conduct of state government commercial tax officials during the 1980s. They engaged in deceptive practices, cheating both the government and the public by collecting taxes and misappropriating funds. The netizen described a situation where officials would accept a bribe of ₹1000 and instruct individuals to pay only a fraction, such as ₹1000, out of a larger tax amount, like ₹10,000.

Another netizen ridiculed him by saying, “What is the relationship between monetary inflation and fiscal allocation? Oh my gosh .. just thinking that he will go and make this stupid argument on any TV today  .. oh my god. Then you say inflation is good, Melting”

A netizen questioned, “Okay then, tell me how much tax has come in SGST. The central government discloses CGST, SGST – How much money is directly going to the state government? SGST – DMK, who conceals the direct arrival.”

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) in general has brought several benefits to state governments in India. One primary advantage is the streamlining of the taxation system, replacing the complex and cascading tax structure that existed before. GST has created a unified market by subsuming various indirect taxes, promoting ease of doing business and facilitating seamless interstate trade. Additionally, it has enhanced tax compliance through a robust IT infrastructure, reducing tax evasion. The revenue-sharing mechanism between the central and state governments ensures a stable source of income for states, fostering financial autonomy. Overall, GST has led to increased transparency, efficiency, and revenue for state governments, contributing to the economic development of the country. However, some state governments and political parties exploit GST to their advantage by constructing false narratives.
