A large number of protestors blocked Railway traffic near Khairpur city in Pakistan’s Sindh province, cutting off all routes towards the Punjab province, as part of their ongoing demonstration against the government’s plans to build at least six new canals on the Indus River.

The Pakistani government’s Cholistan project to irrigate South Punjab’s lands has triggered nationwide protests by political parties, including its coalition partner, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), which has expressed strong reservations against the project and warned of toppling the Shehbaz Sharif government if the proposed project is not cancelled.

On Sunday, a large number of protestors and activists from some nationalist parties extended their ongoing protest and blocked train traffic near Khairpur city.

Protestors and political party leaders in Sindh province have been staging massive public gatherings and protest sit-ins and slamming the Shehbaz Sharif government, along with its coalition partners PPP, for what they call a conspiracy to turn Sindh’s fertile land into a desert.

The nationwide protests against the canals project were also supported by the lawyers’ community, who staged their sit-in protest, in the Sindh province for the third consecutive day.

In the latest protest, the train tracks were later restored after being blocked for several hours by the protestors. However, the protests and ongoing rallies against the project have paralysed the whole province.

Shutter down protests have been reported in major cities and town including Jamshoro, Larkana, Naushehro Feroz, Sujawal, Nawabshah, and Ghotki.

The protests have disrupted traffic between Sindh and Punjab province as roads and the National Highway has been blocked at several places. “In Larkana, shopkeepers, petrol pumps, and markets remained closed, while business activities have come to a complete halt in Ratodero, Baqrani, Dokri and Badah.

Commercial activities in Jamshoro and Nawabshah are suspended, while similar reports are coming from Sujawal, Kandhkot, Shahdadkot, Kashmore, and other districts where markets and other public services have been shut down,” said Hanif Shamon, a resident of Mithi, Tharparker district of Sindh.

“People believe that this is the biggest agitation in the history of Sindh. All roads leading to Punjab and other regions have been blocked for the past three days due to protest sit-ins against irrigation canals. Massive protests have erupted in most parts of Sindh,” he added.

These protests surfaced after Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the Cholistan project on February 15, 2025. Immediately after the launch of the project, strong reservations and concerns were raised by the Sindh provincial government of PPP, which passed a unanimous resolution against the project in March.

Since then, nationwide protests by political parties including PPP, PTI and others have been witnessed, with voices against the contentious project titled ‘Green Pakistan Initiative (GPI)’ becoming louder with protests intensifying with every passing day.

The $3.3 billion GPI launched by the government aims to develop six canals to irrigate at least 1.2 million acres of barren land in South Punjab. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has given an open warning and threat to the federal government under the ruling party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to not go down the path of confrontation with Sindh over the issue of new canals on the Indus River.

“I want to make it clear that our party will not go along with the federal government if it does not shelve the controversial project, even after acknowledging PPP’s objections,” said Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

On the other hand, the government has finally decided to resolve the contentious canals project issue through dialogue as PML-N’s founder and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and present PM Shehbaz Sharif directed ministers to have table talks with PPP over the matter.

“Premier Shahbaz Sharif and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif have instructed me to alleviate Sindh’s concerns regarding the canal issue. We believe in the fair distribution of resources, including water, among all units,” said Rana Sanaullah, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination. However, the opposition party, the PTI has accused the PPP of opposing the canal project in the open while secretly supporting the plan as it is part of the federal government.

“PPP is a partner of the ruling government. Asif Ali Zardari is the president of Pakistan. And the president is supporting the canals project,” said Haleem Adil Sheikh, provincial president of PTI in Sindh. “PPP cannot make a fool out of us all. We will not let anyone steal what is rightfully ours. The federal government and the Punjab government will fail. People of Sindh should get prepared for a big struggle against the canals project,” he added.

President Donald Trump’s administration has become embroiled in a standoff with the judiciary over its program to send to El Salvador illegal migrants who are allegedly members of criminal gangs now declared as foreign terrorist organisations.

A federal judge on Wednesday threatened criminal contempt proceedings against the administration for not following his order to return to the US a plane that was ferrying Venezuelan migrants to a notorious high-security detention centre in El Salvador.

Another federal judge had on Tuesday told the Justice Department that she was going to move against it for failing to comply with orders to bring back a Salvadoran migrant whom the government admitted had been erroneously deported to El Salvador.

She also held out the possibility of contempt proceedings against officials. The threats by the two judges in separate cases to rein in the administration’s deportation actions test the Constitution’s separation of powers between the executive and judicial branches of government.

Trump and his officials have brushed off the judiciary’s threats. Judge James Boasberg said that there was probable cause to hold the administration in contempt for failing to return the migrants en route to El Salvador to give them a chance to challenge their deportation in a US court.

The Justice Department maintains that once the planes were in flight they were out of the court’s jurisdiction and could not be returned. “The Constitution does not tolerate willful disobedience of judicial orders — especially by officials of a coordinate branch who have sworn an oath to uphold it”, Boasberg said.

The administration, which invoked the Alien Enemies Act to deport them, has refused to provide him with details about the migrants, asserting that it would compromise state secrets.

The administration asserted that 238 Venezuelans were members of the dangerous criminal gang Tren de Aragua involved in crimes in the US and abroad and since it has been declared a foreign terrorist organisation it could act against them under the Alien Enemies Act, a 1798 law.

Boasberg said that the government would not have to bring them back, but only give them a chance to challenge their deportation in court.

Failing that, he would require officials to testify under oath to identify those who disregarded his order and prosecute whoever was responsible, he said. When a court cites someone for criminal contempt, the Justice Department prosecutes them.

If it refused to prosecute, Boasberg indicated he would appoint an outside lawyer as the prosecutor. The Trump administration said it would challenge Boasberg, taking it to the Supreme Court where it had earlier notched a partial victory against him in another matter.

On appeal, the Supreme Court struck down a temporary order by Boasberg to stop deportations under the Alien Enemies Act, but upheld the rights of those facing deportation under the law to challenge it in court.

In the other case, the Salvadoran man Kilmar Abrego Garcia was deported by mistake although a judge had ordered that he should not be sent to El Salvador where he may face violence. Judge Paula Xinis ordered the government to bring him back.

On an appeal, the Supreme Court partially sided with the judge, ordering the government to only “facilitate” his return, rather than actually bring him back as Xinis ordered. On Monday, at a White House meeting with Trump, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele said he would not release Garcia from the dreaded Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) prison for hardened criminals. Attorney General Pam Bondi said that the matter was in the hands of Bukele and Garcia was “not coming back” and it was the “end of story”.

Taking a narrow interpretation of the Supreme Court’s dictum to “facilitate” Garcia’s return, Bondi said if El Salvador released him the US would provide a plane to bring him back.

The government says that though the deportation was a mistake, Garcia belonged to MS-13, a notorious gang with roots in El Salvador. Xinis had asked the Justice Department to provide regular updates on what it was doing to facilitate his return, and information on his case. Frustrated by the government’s refusal to fully respond, she said, “There will be no tolerance for gamesmanship or grandstanding”.

She ordered four government officials to sit for a deposition next week with Garcia’s lawyers. The Administration’s lawyer Dave Ensign indicated that the government may appeal her ruling. Ultimately, the Supreme Court may have the final say on contempt proceedings, and were they to come about it could set the scene for a momentous confrontation between the Trump administration and the judiciary.

Trump has called Boasberg a “radical left lunatic” and a group of Republican members of the House of Representatives have introduced a resolution to impeach him.

The Trump administration has announced a freeze on over $2.3 billion in federal funding to Harvard University, intensifying its standoff with elite academic institutions over issues ranging from campus protests to civil rights compliance and ideological governance.

The decision was reportedly revealed on Monday by a special task force under the Department of Education, created to combat antisemitism. According to officials, the funding suspension includes approximately $2.2 billion in grants and $60 million in multi-year contracts. They stated that the freeze was a response to Harvard’s alleged failure to comply with federal mandates aimed at addressing antisemitism and what the administration called “ideological capture” within the university.

A senior administration official claimed the move was part of a broader strategy to reshape the landscape of higher education by ensuring compliance with federal civil rights law and reining in perceived ideological bias. The official emphasized that government investment in higher education was not an entitlement, but a tool contingent upon adherence to constitutional and legal standards.

Key Demands Issued to Harvard

In a five-page letter sent to Harvard last week, federal authorities reportedly demanded sweeping reforms. The requirements included implementing merit-based admissions and hiring, banning face masks on campus, eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, and denying recognition or funding to student groups accused of promoting criminal activity or harassment. The administration also called for full cooperation with federal immigration authorities and an external audit to investigate ideological bias in academic departments.

The administration justified the freeze by alleging that Harvard had failed to prevent antisemitic harassment and had resisted reforms necessary to uphold civil rights obligations.

Harvard Pushes Back

Harvard University President Alan Garber responded to the announcement by rejecting the demands. In a public statement, Garber asserted that the university would not relinquish its independence or constitutional rights. He described the federal government’s actions as politically motivated and accused the administration of seeking to regulate the intellectual climate of the institution.

Harvard’s legal team also reportedly submitted a letter arguing that the administration was overstepping its lawful authority and that the university would not comply with conditions that, in their view, compromise academic freedom.

Officials confirmed that the Harvard case was part of a broader effort to reassess federal funding to elite academic institutions. Universities such as Columbia, Princeton, and the University of Pennsylvania are reportedly under similar scrutiny. Columbia, according to sources, had accepted a list of federal demands to restore suspended funds, while others, including Brown and Princeton, have seen hundreds of millions in research grants withheld.

The task force behind the initiative reportedly includes around 20 officials from multiple federal agencies, operating under the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

Campus Protests And Political Backdrop

President Trump has repeatedly cited pro-Palestinian protests on university campuses—particularly those concerning Israel’s actions in Gaza—as grounds for tougher action. The administration has accused several institutions of failing to protect Jewish students and allowing illegal demonstrations. Education Secretary Linda McMahon has publicly supported the administration’s tougher stance, which officials said aligns with a broader strategy to curb “woke” culture in education.

The funding freeze and associated demands have drawn criticism from civil liberties groups and academic organizations. The American Association of University Professors and other advocacy groups have filed lawsuits accusing the administration of violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. The lawsuits allege that the government is using civil rights law as a cover for politically motivated interventions.

One legal filing described the government’s actions as “an overt attempt to impose political views and suppress disfavored speech.” Faculty, alumni, and students at Harvard have also spoken out. Harvard alumna Anurima Bhargava said that the university had shown it would not yield to “bullying and authoritarian whims.”

Sources within the administration have reportedly indicated that more than 60 universities may face similar reviews. Officials are said to be considering targeting one major institution as a “test case” to send a clear message and shift the ideological balance in higher education.

A passenger train from Pakistan’s economic hub Karachi to Balochistan’s provincial capital Quetta was stopped at Jacobabad and refused entry into Balochistan province after threats of a targetted attack and hijacking prompted security concerns.

The Bolan Mail train carrying about 150 passengers was stopped in Sindh province’s Jacobabad city, where passengers were offloaded and the train refused entry into Balochistan during early hours of Monday.

As per details, the passenger train departed from Karachi and reached Jacobabad post midnight. The train was stopped at the railway station where Pakistan Railway authorities were informed that further movement would not be allowed until security clearance was given. The train was carrying many government officials, security personnel along with their families.

Security sources stated that the intelligence agencies issued a threat alert of a planned hijacking attempt and attack on the train, similar to the Jaffar Express train hijacking that took place on March 11.

This resulted in refusal to allow the train to enter into Balochistan and offloading of passengers in Jacobabad. Majority of the passengers were moved to Sibbi, from where they used local transport services to return to Karachi. Pakistan Railway authorities charged passengers the fare from Karachi to Jacobabad and refunded the extra amount that was charged for the journey till Quetta.

The sudden decision to offload passengers at Jacobabad left many passengers stranded at the railway station with no water or electricity. Reportedly, some children also fainted due to the scorching heat and non-availability of water at the station.

“The hours-long stoppage of the Quetta-bound Bolan Mail was due to security reasons as train operations were not allowed in Balochistan during night-time. The train was carrying about 150 passengers,” said Pakistan Railway Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Amir Ali Baloch. “The train’s onward journey was suspended, and passengers were sent to Quetta and other destinations via buses under strict security measures,” he added.

Train routes to Balochistan have been suspended since March 11 when militants of the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) attacked and hijacked Jaffar Express passenger train at the Bolan pass in Balochistan, taking about 400 passengers as hostages. This resulted in a 48-hour standoff between the militants and the security forces. As many as 346 passengers were rescued, 21 lost their lives and 33 BLA militants were killed during the counteroffensive operation.

In a historic move, the state of Georgia has introduced legislation that seeks to formally recognize Hinduphobia and anti-Hindu bigotry as forms of hate crime. If passed, Senate Bill 375 would make Georgia the first U.S. state to codify Hinduphobia into law, marking a significant milestone for Hindu advocacy efforts nationwide.

The bipartisan bill is co-sponsored by Republican Senators Shawn Still and Clint Dixon, alongside Democratic Senators Jason Esteves and Emanuel D. Jones. The legislation proposes to amend Georgia’s penal code by inserting a specific definition of Hinduphobia and mandating state and local law enforcement agencies to consider anti-Hindu bias in the enforcement of existing anti-discrimination laws.

According to the bill, Hinduphobia is defined as “a set of antagonistic, destructive, and derogatory attitudes and behaviours towards Hinduism.” The proposed law would require authorities to address such attitudes in hate crimes targeting members of the Hindu community.

The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), a national advocacy group, welcomed the introduction of the bill and praised the lawmakers for their leadership. “Georgia becomes the first state to introduce such a bill, and if passed, will make history once again,” CoHNA said in a statement. “We are proud to work closely with Senator Shawn Still on this important bill and thank him along with Senator Emanuel Jones, Senator Jason Esteves, and Senator Clint Dixon for supporting the needs of the Hindu community in Georgia and the United States.”

This legislative push builds on the momentum from April 2023, when Georgia passed a resolution condemning Hinduphobia and anti-Hindu bigotry. That resolution, spearheaded by Republican Representatives Lauren McDonald and Todd Jones of Forsyth County—home to one of Georgia’s largest Hindu and Indian-American populations—recognized Hinduism as one of the world’s oldest religions and condemned hate speech and violence against Hindus.

Community leaders and advocacy groups have lauded the introduction of Senate Bill 375 as a long-overdue acknowledgment of the growing concerns around Hindu-targeted hate incidents in the U.S.

“Senator Still has always been a staunch supporter of the Hindu community and has stood with us during the tough times we faced in the U.S. as well as in places like Bangladesh,” said Rajeev Menon, founder of the Hindus of Georgia Political Action Committee (PAC). “His commitment to fighting Hinduphobia has been a beacon of hope and change for all Hindus across the U.S.”

Dhiru Shah, a senior community leader and board member of the Hindus of Georgia PAC, echoed the sentiment. “Huge shout-outs to Senator Shawn Still and to all the members and supporters of the Hindus of Georgia PAC whose tireless efforts over the years to defend and protect the civil rights of the Hindu community led to this bill,” he said.

According to the Pew Research Center’s 2023–2024 Religious Landscape Study, there are approximately 2.5 million Hindus in the United States, comprising about 0.9% of the national population. Georgia is home to over 40,000 Hindus, primarily residing in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

If enacted, Senate Bill 375 would represent a significant step forward in combating religious discrimination and protecting the civil rights of Hindu Americans—potentially setting a precedent for similar legislation in other states.

More than 250 former officials of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency have signed a letter urging the government to immediately end the war in the Gaza Strip and bring about the release of the Israeli hostages still held there, Israel’s state-owned Kan TV News reported.

According to the report, the signatories include three former Mossad chiefs: Danny Yatom, Efraim Halevy, and Tamir Pardo, as well as dozens of other veteran officials in the service.

The ex-Mossad members said, “Continued fighting endangers the lives of the hostages and our soldiers, and every possibility must be exhausted to reach an agreement that will end the suffering. We call on the government to make courageous decisions and act responsibly for the country’s security.”

They expressed support for hundreds of military aircrew members, in reserve or retired, who signed a similar letter, calling for a cessation of hostilities and the return of the hostages, Xinhua news agency reported. Following the publication of the aircrew members’ letter on Thursday, Israeli Air Force Commander Tomer Bar decided to terminate the service of active reservists among the signatories. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backed the dismissal decision and lashed out at such letters, calling the signatories “an extremist fringe group” attempting to “break Israeli society from within.”

Also on Sunday, about 200 Israeli military doctors signed a petition with the same demand for stopping the fighting and bringing home the hostages, according to several media outlets that published a copy of the letter. “The continued fighting in Gaza is primarily intended to serve political and personal interests, without any security purpose, and endangers the lives of soldiers and hostages,” it said. Hamas took 251 hostages to Gaza during its October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel.

Currently, 59 Israeli hostages remain in Gaza, with 24 of them still believed to be alive. Israel and Hamas reached a three-phase, ceasefire-for-hostages deal in January. However, negotiations on the second phase face an impasse after the first six-week phase expired on March 1. Israel then resumed military operations in Gaza on March 18 amid the ceasefire deadlock.

A severe water crisis gripped parts of Bangladesh, leaving tens of thousands of residents without access to safe drinking water.

The crisis posed serious public health risks and threatened agricultural output in the Feni district of the South Asian country. More than 1.67 lakh tube wells across the coastal district are dried up, local media reported.

The Feni District Public Health Engineering Department (DPHED) said that water is unavailable in 1,67,386 tubewells as the underground water layer dropped significantly. The crisis further deepened in several upazilas of the district where around 70 per cent of tubewells have stopped yielding water, reports the leading Bangladeshi media outlet, UNB.

Due to the crisis, the locals are forced to consume unsafe water from ponds and ditches, which leads to outbreaks of diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases.

“There is no water in tube wells, ponds, or canals. Rain is the only solution,” said the health department’s Executive Engineer, Md Shafiul Haque.

Meanwhile, the reports suggested that 9,871 tube wells out of the registered 36,811 have been not functioning since a long period of time.

And nearly half of the remaining tubewells are dried up with no access to water. Adding to that 50 per cent of the two lakh shallow tube wells installed privately are not producing safe water.

Further, the Fulgazi Upazila of the district reflected a grim picture as the situation is dire amid the water crisis. Kulsum Akter Sharifa, a resident of Sharifpur village’s Kazi Bari, said that five out of 11 families have deep tubewells, but there is no access to safe water.

“We’re suffering terribly trying to collect water for drinking and cooking. We’re forced to fetch water from distant sources,” the resident said.

Another resident said that none of the 35 deep tubewells in his village are functioning. “This is the reality in almost every ward of our union. We have no safe water,” he added.

Last month, according to a report in The Daily Star, Bangladesh is facing an escalating water crisis, the struggle for safe drinking water is becoming increasingly dire in several districts — both in urban centres and remote villages.

The British “Bullshit” Corporation (BBC) has once again proven itself to be nothing more than a propaganda arm for Islamic supremacism. In a recent article, the BBC shamelessly used the term “revert” instead of “convert” to describe those who adopt Islam—before quietly editing it after being called out. This is not just a matter of semantics; it is a deliberate endorsement of the Islamist narrative that everyone is “born Muslim” and must “return” to the faith.

The ‘Revert’ Controversy: Islam’s Supremacist Dogma

The BBC’s original article stated, “Some Muslims refer to ‘revert’ when talking about people who have converted to the Muslim faith. This is based on the belief that everyone is born as a Muslim and those who embrace Islam are returning to their ‘natural state.’”

This is not neutral journalism—it is uncritical amplification of Islamic theological imperialism. The term “revert” is a dogmatic assertion that Islam is the default state of humanity, implying that all non-Muslims—Hindus, Christians, atheists—are deviants who must “return” to the “true faith.”

This is the same supremacist logic used by Islamists to justify:

  • Forced conversions (“They were always Muslims, just unaware”).
  • Denial of apostasy rights (“Leaving Islam is unnatural”).
  • Cultural erasure (“Hinduism/Buddhism/Christianity are corruptions”).

By using this language, the BBC legitimized a dangerous theological claim—one that has been used to justify centuries of Islamic conquest, persecution, and dawah aggression.

BBC’s Cowardly Edit: No Apology, Just Gaslighting

When this usage was called out, the BBC didn’t offer a real apology.

The BBC surreptitiously changed “revert” to “convert”—but instead of admitting their bias, they lied in their “correction note,” claiming:

“Updated on 5 April 2025: Changes language used in the piece to help with understanding.”

No, BBC. You didn’t change it for “clarity.” You changed it because you got caught pushing Islamic dogma as fact. You were caught parroting the dogma of religious exclusivism in a country that claims to stand for secularism and liberty.

This is the same BBC that:

  • Whitewashes jihadist terror as “radicalization” (never “Islamic terrorism”).
  • Defends Islamist hate preachers while smearing Hindu nationalists.
  • Parrots Pakistani propaganda on Kashmir while ignoring Hindu genocide.
  • Whitewashed grooming gangs for fear of “Islamophobia”
  • Routinely demonizes Hindus, now slips in supremacist terms from the Islamic lexicon like it’s just another day in the newsroom.

Let’s flip this for a second. Imagine if an Indian news outlet called a Christian convert to Hinduism a “revert”. The BBC and its ideological cousins would explode with outrage, calling it “Hindutva propaganda,” “exclusionary nationalism,” or worse, “fascism.” But when Islamists say it? The BBC nods along.

The Desert Dogma Behind the Word

“Revert” is not a benign alternative to “convert.” It is based on the Islamic doctrine of fitrah, the belief that every human is born a Muslim. Anyone who isn’t Muslim has deviated, and anyone who embraces Islam is simply returning to their rightful path. This isn’t just theology—it’s the ideological foundation behind Islamic conquest and da’wah movements. It’s the same logic used to justify religious conversion drives and silence dissent in Muslim-majority societies.

And now the BBC, the British Bullshit Corporation, is laundering that supremacist logic into mainstream discourse—without debate, without disclaimer, without shame.

Why Does This Matter?

Because the BBC is not just a news outlet—it is a state-funded broadcaster shaping global opinion. When it uncritically adopts Islamist terminology, it normalizes the idea that:

  • Islam is the default human religion (a claim with zero scientific or historical basis).
  • Conversion to Islam is a “return” (implying other faiths are illegitimate).
  • Criticism of Islam is “unnatural” (since everyone is “supposed” to be Muslim).

This is soft jihad—the cultural Islamization of the West through language manipulation, media bias, and psychological conditioning.

Why This Matters to Hindus—and Everyone Else

The BBC’s sneaky edit proves it knows it was wrong—but lacks the integrity to admit it. Instead, it gaslights the public, pretending the change was for “understanding” rather than covering up its Islamic bias.

When the BBC casually uses “revert” for Islam and pretends it’s just another word, it’s not just a Hindu issue. It’s a warning for anyone who values their freedom of belief. If media outlets normalize the language of supremacy, they normalize the ideology behind it. And once that happens, your silence becomes complicity.

Global brokerages and economists have warned an impending US recession after factoring in the impact of reciprocal tariffs announced by the Donald Trump administration.

According to JPMorgan Chase & Co, “We now expect real GDP to contract under the weight of the tariffs, and for the full year (4Q/4Q) we now look for real GDP growth of -0.3 per cent, down from 1.3 per cent previously,” The bank’s chief US economist Michael Feroli said in a note to clients that the forecast contraction in economic activity is expected to depress hiring and over time to lift the unemployment rate to 5.3 per cent.

Feroli expects the US Federal Reserve to begin cutting its benchmark interest rate in June and proceed with rate cuts at each subsequent meeting through January next year. “If realised, our stagflationary forecast would present a dilemma to Fed policymakers,” Feroli wrote.

Citi economists have cut their forecast for growth this year to just 0.1 per cent while UBS economists reduced their forecast to a mere 0.4 per cent. UBS Chief US Economist, Jonathan Pingle, said in a note that “We expect US imports from the rest of the world fall more than 20 per cent over our forecast horizon, mostly in the next several quarters, bringing imports as a share of GDP back to pre-1986 levels.”

“The forcefulness of the trade policy action implies substantial macroeconomic adjustment for a $30 trillion economy,” he projected. On Friday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said “it feels like we don’t need to be in a hurry” to make any adjustments to rates. His comments followed the release of the latest monthly employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which showed robust hiring in March alongside a slight uptick in the unemployment rate, to 4.2 per cent. Meanwhile, Trump’s reciprocal tariffs triggered a massive sell-off across Wall Street, with the Dow Jones plunging over 2,000 points, the S&P 500 witnessing its worst two-day sell-off since March 2020 and the Nasdaq entering the bear market territory.

Right wing leaders slammed the decision of the Paris court concerning Marine Le Pen, leader of National Rally, being banned from running in the 2027 presidential election.

A Paris court on Monday ruled that Le Pen, who has been a three-time presidential candidate, will be barred from running in the next presidential race following her conviction for embezzlement of European Union funds. Le Pen, who was the frontrunner for the next election, received a four-year prison sentence with two years suspended, to be served under house arrest, and a €100,000 ($108,000) fine. Her party, National Rally, was also fined €2 million.

The party denounced the trial as politically motivated, according to media reports. In her first reaction to the verdict, Le Pen called the ruling a “political decision” aimed at preventing her from running in the 2027 presidential election. “It was a political decision that was made. The magistrate took it upon herself to implement the provisional execution of the ineligibility, to render my appeal on this matter useless in order to prevent me from standing and being elected President of the Republic,” said Le Pen in an interview clip shared by her on X.

“The rule of law has been completely violated by the decision that has been made. It prevents an effective remedy, it justifies provisional execution by the fact of defending oneself, and it applies the spirit of a law subsequent to the facts with which we are accused,” she wrote in an X post. She stated she would not let herself be eliminated and would pursue all legal remedies. She assured to stand by the French people to defend them because she said that there are millions of French people who trust her.

Meanwhile, reacting to Le Pen’s conviction for fraud and ban on her running for office, US President Donald Trump compared it to his own legal battles. “She was banned from running for five years, and she was the leading candidate. That sounds like this country, that sounds very much like this country,” Trump said, describing the court ruling as “a very big deal.”

US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce stated that the exclusion of people from the political process is particularly concerning given the aggressive and corrupt lawfare also waged against President Trump in the United States. Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini denounced “a declaration of war by Brussels” as the source of Le Pen’s conviction. “Those who fear the judgment of the voters are often reassured by the judgment of the courts. In Paris, they have condemned Marine Le Pen and would like to exclude her from political life. A bad film that we are also seeing in other countries like Romania,” said Salvini, leader of the far-right Lega party, in a statement.

Donald Trump Jr., the son of US President Donald Trump, also took to X to comment on the court decision. “France is sending Le Pen to jail and barring her from running?! Are they just trying to prove J.D. Vance was right about everything?” he posted. In a speech in Munich in February, Vice President Vance had lambasted European democracies for, he said, censoring free speech. Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders expressed shock at the court ruling against Le Pen, pledging his “100 per cent” support. “I am shocked by the incredibly tough verdict against (Le Pen). I support and believe in her for the full 100 per cent, and I trust she will win the appeal and become President of France,” Wilders posted on X. Russia condemned the French court’s decision to bar far-right leader Marine Le Pen from running for office for five years, calling it a politically motivated attack on democratic norms.

“More and more European capitals are going down the path of violating democratic norms. We do not want to interfere in France’s internal affairs, and we have never done so,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. “But our observation of European capitals shows that they do not shy away from stepping outside the bounds of democracy in the political process,” he added.
