As the monsoon rains lash Ahmedabad, the city is witnessing a parallel surge in complaints related to stray dogs, mirroring the seasonal spike in stray cattle sightings on roads.

In the last four months, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has received 3,891 complaints about stray dog attacks. July alone accounted for 1,395 cases, marking a steep rise in incidents.

Citizens commuting on relatively empty roads at night have reported frequent encounters with aggressive dog packs, especially in residential and industrial pockets. The increasing threat has not only sparked concern but also coincided with an alarming number of dog bite incidents.

Sources reveal nearly 5,000 bite cases per month, pushing the total to over 20,000 in just four months. Despite ongoing sterilisation and vaccination drives, civic authorities admit the issue is far from resolved.

According to AMC data, only 2,412 dogs have been sterilised during this period. Here’s how the numbers stack up: Between April and early August, Ahmedabad recorded a fluctuating yet concerning trend in stray dog complaints and sterilisation efforts.

In April, the city received 727 complaints and carried out 549 sterilisations. The number of complaints rose in May to 911, with 572 dogs sterilised. June saw a slight dip, with 573 complaints and 537 sterilisations.

However, July marked the sharpest spike, with 1,395 complaints — the highest in the period — while sterilisation stood at 580. In the first few days of August, 155 complaints were logged, and only 74 dogs were sterilised.

These figures reflect a gap between the volume of complaints and the pace of sterilisation efforts, indicating the growing urgency of the stray dog issue in the city. While the sterilisation drive continues, many believe it is not keeping pace with the rising stray population.

Municipal estimates suggest there are over two lakh stray dogs on Ahmedabad’s streets. In response to this growing menace, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has spent more than Rs 9.36 crore over three years on stray dog control measures. The AMC pays Rs 976.50 per dog to contracted organisations for capturing and relocating stray dogs.

According to Shehzadkhan Pathan, the Leader of Opposition in the AMC, the corporation spent Rs 2.30 crore in 2020-21, Rs 2.56 crore in 2021-22, and Rs 4.5 crore in 2022-23 on tackling the issue. Despite the rising expenditure, residents say these efforts have provided little to no relief, as the problem continues to worsen across urban neighbourhoods.

Gujarat has taken the lead in optimising technology usage for faster and efficient judicial procedures, said a report.

With close coordination between police, jails, and the judiciary, the state government has facilitated the production of prisoners before the court through video conferencing, making the process easy and less cumbersome.

This approach has led to significant progress in presenting a large number of prisoners from state jails before the courts through the video conferencing (VC) system, thereby saving manpower, time, and resources of the police department.

The process of producing prisoners before the courts through video conferencing got firmed up after a decision was taken in 2022 to install about 1,100 video conferencing (VC) units across the courts. Of these, 23 software-based VC systems were allocated specifically to jails.

At present, 83 video conferencing systems are operational in jails across Gujarat. According to data from the Gujarat Prisons Department, adopting this system has shown positive results. Between January and June 2024, 40,633 prisoners (29 per cent) were produced before the courts through video conferencing by all jails under the department’s jurisdiction.

This number increased to 53,672 prisoners (41 per cent) during the same period in 2025, reflecting growing usage and subsequent success of the system. The effective implementation of this system has saved manpower, time, and resources for the police department.

It has also allowed the redeployment of personnel earlier assigned to custody duties, thus improving overall departmental efficiency. This system has played a key role in accelerating the judicial process, ensuring timely justice for victims and fair punishment for criminals. With Gujarat leading others in using video conferencing for court hearings, this reflects the state government’s commitment to strengthening the judiciary system through the use of technology.

In a major development, Gujarat Congress leaders on Tuesday unconditionally apologised to former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani for levelling baseless charges against the latter and admitted on record that their accusations were politically motivated and lacked any evidence. Vijay Rupani’s counsel, Ansh Bhardwaj, confirmed the unconditional apology issued by the Congress leaders in writing in a video message.

He further said that the former Gujarat CM has accepted their apology and has sought court’s permission to withdraw the defamation lawsuit that he filed against them. Two years ago, Vijay Rupani had slapped a legal notice to Congress leaders including Sukhram Rathwa and his associates for claiming that the former chief minister was part of a land scam worth Rs 500 crore. The Congress leaders in a press conference had claimed that the then BJP government under Vijay Rupani changed the zoning of land belonging to the Rajkot Urban Development Authority (RUDA) from residential to industrial for benefitting a corporate group.

Rupani’s legal counsel Ansh Bhardwarj informed that the Congress leaders led by the then Leader of Opposition Sukhram Rathwa have admitted on record that there was no evidence behind their wild charges and it was mere political accusation to show the then BJP government in bad light.

“Vijay Rupani had objected to their unwarranted charges in 2022 and demanded that they retract their allegations and file an apology. When they refused to oblige, a criminal defamation case was filed in Gandhinagar court by Vijay Rupani. Eyewitnesses recorded their statements and the trial continued. Now, all four Congress leaders have submitted an unconditional apology to Vijay Rupani for making unfounded claims,” said Ansh Bhardwaj. He further mentioned that Vijay Rupani has sought court’s nod for withdrawing the defamation suit against the Congress leaders.

Gujarat administration has initiated its largest-ever demolition drive in Gir Somnath district to clear illegal constructions. The action, which began on September 27 night targets unauthorised structures near the famous Somnath temple and aims to pave the way for the ambitious Somnath Development Project.

The operation is still on. Officials report that approximately 36 bulldozers have been deployed to raze illegal buildings, while 70 tractors and trolleys are working round the clock to remove debris.

The operation has been described as the most extensive in Gir Somnath’s history, dismantling several unlawful constructions behind the Somnath temple. Authorities have implemented stringent security protocols to ensure the smooth execution of this mega operation.

A force of 1,200 police personnel has been mobilised, overseen by high-ranking officials, including district collectors, IGPs, three SPs, six DySPs, and 50 PI-PSIs.

The demolition drive has not been without obstacles. Reports indicate that 70 individuals were detained from a religious site that was impeding the operation.

To overcome these challenges, the authorities have employed an impressive array of heavy machinery, including five Hitachi machines, 30 JCBs, 50 tractors, and 10 dumpers. In the interest of public safety, the entire demolition area has been cordoned off, with access restricted to authorised personnel only.

Traffic management measures have been implemented, including closing routes at Somnath Circle and Bhidiya Circle. As the operation continues, it remains to be seen how this large-scale demolition will impact Gir Somnath’s landscape and the proposed Somnath Development Project.

In January 2024, Gujarat authorities initiated a large-scale anti-encroachment operation. The drive targeted approximately three hectares (7.4 acres) of illegally occupied land behind the revered Somnath temple in Gir Somnath district. Collector Harji Vadhvaniya reported that the operation aimed to demolish 21 unauthorised houses and 153 illegal huts.

These structures had been constructed without permission on land owned by the Shree Somnath Trust, which oversees the operations of the esteemed Somnath temple and the Gujarat government.

The extensive demolition drive, saw the deployment of five mamlatdars (revenue officers), approximately 100 revenue officials, and a substantial police force to maintain peace and order. Following the clearance operation, authorities plan to fence the reclaimed three-hectare area, adhering to directives issued by the state’s revenue department.

Somnath temple, located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval town along the Arabian Sea coast, holds immense religious and cultural importance. It is believed to be the foremost among the 12 jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and serves as a primary pilgrimage site and tourist attraction.

Ever dreamt of slashing electricity bills and getting free power from the sun? The PM Surya Ghar – Muft Bijli Yojana has turned this dream a reality!

One such beneficiary of this scheme launched by PM Narendra Modi’s government is the residents of Samarth Nagar located in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar.

The solar panels installed under this scheme have freed the residents of this area from the hassle of electricity bills.

These families who once used to pay electricity bills to the tune of ₹10,000 to ₹13,000 every month now only have to pay up to ₹800 to ₹900 per month.

Launched by the central government, this ambitious scheme aims to provide free solar power to millions of homes across India.

A resident of Samarth Nagar, Gunjan Badrakiya, said that he has installed solar panels at his house, which have significantly reduced his electricity bill.

“Earlier, I used to pay an electricity bill of ₹12,000 to ₹13,000 per month, but now I have to pay only ₹800 to ₹900 per month. This change has come after installing solar panels barely six months ago, from which we are getting a lot of benefits.”

He also added that most people in his area are installing solar panels, which is a positive change for the environment and people.

The process of getting subsidies for installing solar panels is quite fast, so people do not face any inconvenience.

Another resident Ketul Vinayak said that after the installation of solar panels in his house under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana, the electricity bill which he pays now has been significantly reduced.

He added that he also uses an air conditioner throughout the day. “Although it took some time to install solar panels, now it is yielding better results,” he said. Earlier, he used to pay an electricity bill up to ₹11,000 to ₹15,000, but now it has reduced considerably.”

Gandhinagar Executive Engineer H.V. Shah said that people are getting benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana. People are installing solar panels up to 10 kilowatts as per their needs, which means they do not face electricity shortages.

“If a house produces more electricity and consumes less, then the remaining energy is paid into its account. This is an excellent system, and people are getting financial benefits from it,” Shah said.

Once again, self-styled fact-checker Mohammed Zubair has been exposed for spreading a false narrative, seizing the chance to stoke tensions between Muslims and Hindus.

On the night of 16 March 2024, international students from various countries such as Africa, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan, who are enrolled at Gujarat University, reported incidents of physical assault, stone-throwing, and vandalism. These attacks occurred while the students were observing Ramazan Taraweeh prayers in a designated area within their hostel, A-Block.

The students were offering Namaz in an open area when questioned by around 25 Hindu students about the location’s suitability. This led to an altercation, escalating into a clash where stones were thrown, and rooms vandalized, causing injuries. Some students sustained injuries and are presently receiving treatment at SVP Hospital.

Two foreign students, one from Sri Lanka and the other from Kazakhstan, reportedly sustained injuries. The City Police Commissioner reported swift police response and ongoing scrutiny of videos capturing the incident.

Reports say that foreign students had been using a wall and stage as an open mosque, where Arabic script was displayed. Congress and AIMIM expressed support for the foreign Muslim students involved, with AIMIM sharing videos from their perspective, escalating communal tensions. Authorities including the Vice Chancellor and investigative teams are addressing the situation, with a state-level meeting convened to further address the matter.

As is his custom, he manipulated the incident to suit his agenda, altering the video to craft a biased portrayal suggesting Hindu students attacked Muslim students during prayers.

This post rapidly disseminated, causing individuals, news media and political figures to accept its validity and propagate it through their social media accounts.

However, contrary to the fabricated narrative, the true sequence of events unfolded on 16th March 2024 at the Gujarat University hostel, where a confrontation erupted between local and foreign students. This altercation resulted in the destruction of property, including laptops, AC units, and other belongings in room number 23 of the ‘A’ block, as well as damage to vehicles parked outside. The incident transpired around 10 PM, leading to the filing of a police report at 12:45 AM, following a complaint from the hostel’s security personnel.

The Gujarat University hostel houses approximately 300 foreign students from countries such as Afghanistan, various African nations, Sri Lanka, and others. Among these, 75 students reside in the ‘A’ block. On the 16th of March, some of these students were engaged in offering Namaz in an open area within the hostel grounds. However, a group of approximately 25 Hindu students raised objections to their choice of location, arguing that the ground was a public space and not designated as a mosque or madrasa. In response, an Afghan student named Harun Afghani approached and slapped a Hindu youth, sparking the initial altercation which rapidly escalated into a clash. During the confrontation, stones were thrown, and rooms were vandalized, resulting in property damage and injuries to several students.

The City Police Commissioner stated that law enforcement reached the scene within ten minutes of the incident. Additionally, he noted that several videos depicting the confrontation, including a significant slap, are currently being examined closely. Investigations have unveiled that foreign students recently misused a wall and stage, converting them into an unauthorized mosque. The wall bore Arabic script stating ‘Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim’ (In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), serving as a place where groups of foreign students gathered for Namaz prayers five times a day.

Additionally Ahmedabad Commissioner of Police GS Malik said, “Around 300 foreign students study in Gujarat University and around 75 foreign students stay in A Block (Hostel). Yesterday, at around 10:30 pm a group of students were offering Namaz. Around 20-25 people came and asked them why they were offering Namaz here & should instead read it in the Masjid. An argument broke out between them, stones were pelted and their rooms were vandalized by the people who came from outside…Police took swift action & FIR has been registered against 20-25 people…Action will be taken against those involved in this…One person has been identified. Law & order situation is under control now…Two students from Sri Lanka & Tajikistan are admitted to the hospital

As online users grew increasingly upset with Mohammed Zubair, a fact-checker known for promoting biased narratives, his reports were accused of fueling communal tension and quickly became a top trending in India topic under #ArrestZubair. It’s worth mentioning that Zubair has previously faced criticism for his role in sparking tensions and advocating for the arrest of Nupur Sharma through provocative propaganda.

A Maulana in Gujarat’s Junagadh district who was appointed to teach Urdu has been arrested for committing unnatural sexual acts with at least ten underage students.

According to a report by Hindu Post, the teacher who is aged 25 took advantage of his position and sexually abused children at the residential school/madrasa where he taught.

Following a complaint by a 17-year-old boy, the Mangrol police filed a First Information Report (FIR) on Sunday against both suspects, charging them under sections 377 (unnatural intercourse), 323 (assault), 506-2 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, and relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.

Additionally, the 55-year-old trustee of the madrasa has also been apprehended for ignoring the students’ complaints about the teacher’s behavior, as confirmed by a statement from Junagadh Police on Monday, 23 October 2023. The teacher who had managed to escape was found hiding in Surat and taken into custody, while the madrasa trustee, was detained in Junagadh.

The incident came to light when a student from the residential school, located on the Mangrol-Veraval bypass, used a teacher’s mobile phone to contact his mother and report the inappropriate actions of the Maulana with the students. Subsequently, the woman contacted the police and filed a complaint, alleging that the madrasa teacher had sexually assaulted students living and studying in the school.

On October 21, the police visited the madrasa premises and, with the help of some Muslim leaders, gained the trust of the students. Ten boys studying at the madrasa revealed that they had been subjected to these acts by the Maulana, who had also threatened to harm them if they reported the incidents to their parents.

Furthermore, the students stated that when they approached the madrasa’s trustee to file a complaint, he took no action in response. As the trustee realized that a case would be filed against the teacher, he assisted the teacher in fleeing the area.

Junagadh’s Superintendent of Police, Harshad Mehta, visited the madrasa as part of the investigation and assured the parents of the students that the police would conduct a fair and impartial inquiry into the matter.

The pattern of reporting sexual abuse of children in Madrasas by Muslim teachers is now regularly seeing the light of day. Previously attempts were made to hide such instances of abuse to keep the good name of Madrasas. However, there are monthly reports of 10-15 such distressing cases emerging from various Madarsas across the country, involving clerics engaging in the sexual exploitation of underage children.

But the fact is, the number of officially reported cases to the police could be much lower as many many individuals, families, and members of Muslim society refrain or restrain from filing complaints due to fear and the associated social stigma attached to such incidents.

Al Jazeera which is a news organization based in Qatar that has a global presence and is known for its coverage of international and Middle Eastern news has twisted facts again. As per Al Jazeera, Muslims in a Hindu-majority school in Gujarat were beaten by “Hindu activists for arranging a student performance on religious tolerance that depicted Muslim prayers at a Hindu-majority school”.

The video alleges that the teacher was attacked in the school he works in for organizing a show on “religious tolerance” that depicted “Muslim prayers” in which students who were mostly Hindu asked to sing and act out Muslim prayers.

Al Jazeera said that the school principal had called it at an act to welcome a Muslim student who was recently admitted to the school.

“The school issued an apology and deleted the video from its page”, Al Jazeera said.

However, what they conveniently omitted to state was that four Hindu students were forced to perform Namaz without consent from their parents, according to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists.

The activists claimed that the teacher had coerced Hindu students into participating in a Namaz prayer during an event on September 29.

The private school in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, later issued an apology following the incident. The principal of Kalorex Future School in Ghatlodia, Niraliben Dagli, confirmed that the school had indeed issued an apology letter in response to the incident. This letter was sent to the groups responsible for organizing the protest against the school and its teacher.

In a video of the protest, a group of individuals can be seen physically assaulting the school’s music teacher, Maulik Pathak, while police personnel attempted to protect him. Eventually, Pathak was safely escorted away by his colleagues and the police.

Umang Mojidra, the secretary of ABVP’s Ahmedabad city unit, explained that on September 29, the school hosted an event that was live-streamed on their Facebook page, as is common for their events. During this event, five Hindu students from the second grade, approximately 7 years old, were shown participating in Namaz and extending Eid greetings to their peers. It is important to note that both the teacher and the students involved were Hindus. According to Mojidra, the teacher and the school allegedly compelled the students to take part in the Namaz, which prompted their protest.

Mojidra clarified that their intention was not to harm the teacher, but some of the protestors may have unintentionally roughed him up. The protesters demanded the resignation of the school principal and were taken to the police station by the authorities, only to be released shortly afterward.

Principal Niraliben Dagli explained that one of the students, who happened to be Muslim, initiated the Namaz and was joined by four Hindu students, all with their parents’ consent. She emphasized that no one had raised any objections at the time. Pathak, the music teacher, may have been targeted because he was seen playing the piano in the background of the video. The Namaz event lasted for a brief one and a half minutes.

Dagli stressed that while the event was a mock demonstration, and no one was forced to participate, the school did not want to hurt anyone’s sentiments. The school’s intention behind holding the event on September 29 was solely to educate students about various festivals.

In their apology letter to the protesters, the school acknowledged that a public demonstration of Namaz had taken place during the September 29 function. The letter stated that Hindu organizations and parents had raised concerns, leading to discussions with the school authorities involving groups such as the International Hindu Parishad, Rashtriya Bajrang Dal, and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Through these discussions, the school authorities recognized the seriousness of the situation and admitted their mistake.

Meanwhile, left-liberal fact-checker Mohammad Zubair jumped into the fray and said, “FAKE NEWS! Stop Justifying Mob violence! Four Hindu students were NOT forced to perform Namaz. In fact, the Hindu students didn’t perform Namaz. It was the Muslim student who enacted that. The other 4 Hindu students later joined him in singing “Lab pe aati hai dua”.
