Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy said on Friday that the Union Territory will deposit Rs 750 into the bank accounts of all ration cardholders as a gift on the occasion of Pongal.

Pongal, one of the most important festivals of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, is celebrated on January 15 every year. The Puducherry government provides ration cardholders with gift hampers and money during Pongal. The Chief Minister has now announced that instead of distributing the gift money through ration shops, the government will transfer the money directly to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

The announcement was made during a ceremony held at Kamarajar Mani Mandapam on East Coast Road to issue appointment orders to 168 newly recruited junior engineers and supervisors in the Public Works Department. Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan attended the event.

The Chief Minister launched an online service for water connection applications and payment collections at the ceremony. N. Rangasamy emphasised the government’s commitment to providing jobs to talented individuals and filling vacant positions in government departments. He further announced that 300 nursing vacancies would be filled soon.

Puducherry is governed by an NDA-led administration. NR Congress leader N. Rangasamy serves as Chief Minister and BJP leader A. Namassivayam holds the Home Minister portfolio.

In a recent development related to the Delhi drug bust case, Puducherry Congress leader Eeram Rajendran has been formally summoned for questioning regarding his alleged ties to international drug kingpin Jaffer Sadiq.

Last month, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Delhi apprehended a trio and seized narcotics 3500 kilograms of pseudoephedrine, with a market value exceeding ₹2000 crore on the global scale. Following their interrogation, it was revealed that Jaffer Sadiq, based in Chennai, orchestrated the scheme and was subsequently arrested. Another associate, Sada from Chennai, was also apprehended following investigations.

In light of these developments, the Anti-Drug Trafficking Unit issued summons to filmmaker Ameer for interrogation in the investigation. Subsequently, searches were conducted at both Ameer’s and Jaffer Sadiq’s premises by the Central Enforcement Directorate.

Now, the Central Narcotics Control Unit has directed attention to Congress leader Eeram Rajendran, summoning him to appear for questioning at their Delhi office on the 14 and 15 April 2024. Rajendran, known for his involvement in the Eeram Foundation, joined the Congress party just last February.

Last week, images of Rajendran, the Congress Party’s representative for the Muthialpet constituency in Puducherry, alongside Jaffer Sadiq, surfaced on social media platforms. Rajendran addressed the media on 8 April 2024, clarifying his involvement. He stated, “I have been involved in managing factories for the past two decades. In 2017, I initiated the ‘Eeram Foundation’ for philanthropic activities. Subsequently, I joined the Congress party and have been actively engaged in various developmental initiatives. Additionally, I am collaborating as an associate producer in the film industry, notably working on projects with my close associate, director Ameer. Our film ‘Mayavalai’ featured Jaffer Sadiq among the attendees during its promotional activities. However, my adversaries are misrepresenting these associations on social media. Ameer has a wide circle of friends, including Jaffer Sadiq. I have no direct affiliation with him and have not been implicated in any investigation related to this matter. If required, I am fully prepared to cooperate with any inquiries. I have also lodged complaints with the cybercrime authorities and local police against those spreading defamatory content about me online. My commitment to advancing the Congress party’s agenda remains steadfast, and I am determined to accelerate our initiatives for further progress.”

It’s important to highlight that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) detectives carried out searches at 30 sites across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. These searches included locations such as Jaffer Sadiq’s residence on Arulanandam Street in Mylapore, film director Ameer’s office in T. Nagar, and his residence in Chetpet, as well as Buhari hotel owner Buhari’s residence in Shastri Nagar, Adyar, JSM hotels in Purasawalkam, a property in Kodungaiyur, and a tour and travel operator’s office in Eldams Road and Teynampet. Additionally, 25 other locations in various Tamil Nadu cities like Chennai, Madurai, and Tiruchirapalli were searched. Sadiq Jaffer’s premises are also under scrutiny under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The NCB has indicated that they are investigating Sadiq’s connections with financiers in Tamil and Hindi cinema, as well as some “high-profile” individuals and potential instances of “political funding.”

Following information obtained during the interrogation of Jaffer Sadiq and his associates by the NCB, the ED has taken up this case to trace a money trail. ED officers carried out searches at 30 sites linked to Sadiq and his associates.

In a recent incident that has stirred significant debate, Pondicherry University found itself embroiled in a contentious issue surrounding a play presented during its annual cultural festival, Ezhini 2K24. The Department of Performing Arts staged a production titled “SOMAYANAM” on 29 March 2024, which has ignited a firestorm of criticism. Allegations have surfaced regarding the play’s portrayal of characters from the revered Hindu epic, Ramayana, which many have found deeply disrespectful and offensive.

According to reports from ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad), a prominent student organization, the play purportedly depicted Sita, a central figure in the Ramayana, offering beef to Ravana, the antagonist in the epic, among other objectionable scenes. Furthermore, the character of Hanuman, a revered devotee of Lord Rama, was allegedly subjected to mockery, with his distinctive tail portrayed as an antenna used for communication. These portrayals have evoked strong condemnation from various quarters, particularly Hindu communities who hold the Ramayana in the highest regard.

In response to the perceived affront to Hindu sentiments, ABVP staged protests at Pondicherry University on 30 March 2024, demanding accountability from the university administration. The student organization issued a statement on 31 March 2024 vehemently condemning the play’s content and calling for swift action against those responsible for its production.

Moreover, ABVP has accused Communist and Left-led outfits on the university campus of orchestrating the controversial play as part of a deliberate agenda to malign Hindu deities and question the sanctity of revered religious texts. They have demanded disciplinary measures against individuals involved in the play’s creation and production, including the writer, director, and actors.

The controversy at Pondicherry University is not an isolated incident. Similar instances of alleged disrespect towards Hindu religious figures have been reported from Pune University, where a play titled “Jab We Met” staged objectionable scenes, including Sita smoking a cigarette. These incidents have reignited debates on the boundaries of creative expression, religious sensitivity, and the responsibilities of academic institutions in upholding cultural and religious values.

In response to public outcry and widespread dissemination of footage depicting the controversial scenes, Puducherry police have initiated legal action, indicating a growing recognition of the seriousness of the matter.

Kalapet Police in Pondicherry University registered a case against students and others for outraging religious feelings in the play  “Somayanam” at the festival. Police initiated an inquiry, and the university formed a committee to investigate.

Meanwhile, university administrations have formed committees to investigate the incidents further and address concerns raised by various stakeholders.

In a tragic news, a nine-year-old girl from Solai Nagar in Puducherry, who had gone missing, was found brutally murdered. Her hands and feet were tied, and her lifeless body was discovered in a sack dumped into a drain. An audio clip purportedly featuring the girl’s father alleging that ganja-consuming individuals mutilated and killed his daughter intensified the public outcry.

The fifth-grade student from Muthialpet Government School had gone missing on the evening of March 2, prompting her parents to alert authorities and initiate a search. The state of decomposition indicated that she had been deceased for a considerable period. Despite exhaustive efforts by multiple police teams and the aid of sniffer dogs over the past two days, locating the girl proved challenging. CCTV footage from a nearby street captured the last sighting of her, joyfully playing at noon.

The missing girl, a bright fifth-grade student, was the daughter of Narayanan, a driver, and Maithili, a worker at the Primary Health Centre (PMC). She went out to play in the afternoon and did not return home, leading her parents and concerned locals to file a report at the Muthialpet police station around 8 pm after extensive search efforts.

Seven individuals were arrested in connection with the incident, leading to a dawn investigation that exposed a 19-year-old youth named Karunas and his accomplice Vivekanandan (59) as involved in the abduction, attempted rape, and subsequent murder of the girl. The case has now been reclassified as a POCSO Act investigation, and a comprehensive inquiry is underway to uncover all details surrounding this tragic incident. The detainees, Vivekanandan (54) and Karunas (19), both residents of Puducherry, are currently undergoing interrogation.

According to a report by Nakkheeran, an audio clip of the girl’s father saying that ganja-stoned youths cut the girl’s arms and legs to pieces and killed her. In that audio, the audio is spreading saying, ‘Ganja-stoners 7 people have tied her hands and feet together and committed the act”. The police are also investigating on the basis of that audio.

This devastating incident has deeply affected the community in Puducherry, evoking strong reactions from various political figures and the public on social media. As tensions escalated, law enforcement authorities, supported by personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force, were deployed to ensure and uphold law and order.

In response to the tragic incident, Vijay, the film star and leader of the Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam, expressed his condolences saying “The murder of a 9-year-old girl from Muthialpet, Puducherry due to sexual harassment is heartbreaking. It is with a heavy heart that I offer my deepest condolences to the parents of the girl who has lost their daughter. On behalf of Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam, I request that the Puducherry government should take appropriate action to get the maximum punishment according to the law to the killers who brutally and mercilessly killed the girl.”

In the coastal city of Puducherry, the Pondy Lit Fest will return with its Fourth Edition on 15th September 2023. This year, the event focuses on the theme “India’s Strategic Autonomy”. The three-day event starting 15 September 2023 up to 17 September 2023 will witness discussions spanning various topics like technology, science, military, economics, and foreign policy and is bound to generate immense cogitation in the young minds. The Southern part of India has already made space for literary fests (Pondy Lit Fest, Western Ghats Lit Fest, Mangalore Lit Fest, etc.) that counter the propaganda from the lies peddled by historians, media outlets, and politicians. At a time when the counterbalance to intellectual discourse is slowly growing in India, such Lit Fests will undoubtedly bring all such debates to one stage.

Setting Expectations High

After a brief hiatus due to the pandemic, the organisers in the last edition retained the underlying theme “Bharat Shakti” in the spirit of Sri Aurobindo. The third edition also came at the confluence of India celebrating 75 years of her Independence and Sri Aurobindo’s 150th birth anniversary. The event focused on paying respects to the sacrifices of countless heroes from South India in the struggle for independence. Along with it, the event celebrated our trajectory in diverse fields. With a focus on revisiting the past to aspire for a better future, sessions covered domains like Culture, Civilisation, Literature, Sanatana Dharma, Economy, Media, History, and Defence. The event also hosted various book launches that blended with the theme.

In the past, the organisers faced hurdles in conducting the fest due to intense pressure from certain sections. Despite the challenges, the fest has tried to bring out young minds from diverse fields. With riveting discussions between eminent politicians, scientists, and authors, the fest has surely developed its own signature.

What Can One Expect In This Edition Of The Pondy Lit Fest

In this year’s edition, Pondy Lit Fest promises to deliver a high-quality experience with presentations, lectures, book discussions, and panel discussions by India’s foremost thinkers. The Lit Fest aims to unite India by incorporating contributions from various strategic sectors and highlighting the ideas put forth by influential figures from these domains.

The audience can also witness the seventh edition of the Swarajya Awards which will be presented on the first day of the event. These awards are conferred for outstanding work in the spheres of economics, politics, society, and culture respectively.

The Motwani Jadeja Foundation’s flagship initiative, the Rajeev Circle Scholars Program, will also be introduced at Lit Fest. This initiative aimed to bring out highly researched and affordable books on Indian history by granting fellowships to eligible scholars.

Books from publishers like BluOne Ink and Garuda Publications will be launched formally during the event. The Lit Fest will also feature stalls from organisations and publishers in the Indic Space.

Temple Elephant ‘Lakshmi’ of the Manakula Vinayagar Temple collapsed and passed away on 30 November 2022, when she was out for her morning walk. She was only 30 years old and was much loved by the people of Puducherry.

Lakshmi was walking in a lane along with her mahout when she fainted on the road. Veterinary doctors were rushed in to provide medical help but she passed away soon reportedly of cardiac arrest.

Hearing the news of Lakshmi’s demise, residents of Puducherry flocked to see their darling and have been paying tearful tributes.

Temple activists and elephant actvists have alleged foul play in the death of Lakshmi. S. Muralidharan, of Redefining Animal Welfare suspects sabotage by Indian Forest Service officer Vanjulavalli Sridhar and BJP’s Maneka Gandhi.

“On whose direction did she confine the elephant in the shed without walks & conduct a postmortem”, Muralidharan asked.

https://twitter.com/redefiningaw/status/1597834566483730434

He alleged that Lakshmi was forcefully taken away from the Manakula Vinayagar Temple by Maneka Gandhi during the pandemic.

“We brought Lakshmi back with the help of then Puducherry Chief Minister Narayanasamy, Congress leader Americai Narayanan and Indu Makkal Katchi. But after that, Maneka exerted pressure on the Forest Department to keep the elephant confined not even allowing her to go for a walk. Because of that she (Lakshmi) had water retention in her body due to which she suffered a heart attack and died today morning.”, the elephant activist said adding that Maneka Gandhi and the BJP government is responsible for the mess.

Temple activist Rangarajan Narasimhan has also raised suspicion over the death of Lakshmi.

Earlier, Lakshmi was displaced from her home in Manakula Vinayagar Temple by taking her away reportedly in an unethical and illegal manner. She was kept at Krishi Vigyan Kendra in a pathetic condition. Indu Makkal Katchi (IMK) mobilized a campaign to rescue Lakshmi from PETA. Congress’s Americai V. Narayanan, BJP Puducherry’s Ganesan and other members from various Hindu organizations protested the move to remove Lakshmi from the temple.  They had sought the intervention of Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy to bring back Lakshmi home. Following this, Lakshmi was brought back to the Puducherry Manakkula Vinayagar Temple from the Kamaraj Agricultural Science Center in Kurumbapet.

All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) chief N Rangasamy was sworn in as the chief minister of Puducherry on Friday in a brief five minute-ceremony held at Raj Nivas at Puducherry. He will lead a coalition government, with members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in his cabinet.

On Friday afternoon, the Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan administered the oath of office and secrecy to Ramasamy, giving him his fourth stint in the office of the CM. N Rangasamy, who was the only legislator who was sworn in today, took the oath in Tamil.

While Karnataka is the lone southern state in India with the BJP in the ruling government, the party’s induction in the Puducherry cabinet points that the Narendra Modi-led party is expanding its political footprint in the region.

The BJP also fared well in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu, where it won four assembly seats, infringing upon the Dravidian parties’ fiefdom.

Union Minister of State for Home and BJP leader Kishan Reddy attended the oathtaking ceremony. Reddy told presspersons that the BJP and AINRC would have three ministers each and they would sworn in the coming days. These six ministers, and Rangasamy, would bring the strength of the cabinet to seven members.

BJP’s A Namassivayam, who was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP’s legislature wing, is tipped to be the deputy chief minister. This would be the first ever instance of the union territory having a deputy chief minister.

The AINRC won ten seats while the BJP won six, giving them the simple majority in the thirty-member house. The six independent MLAs are mostly supporters of N Rangasamy.

The DMK won six seats out of the thirteen constituencies it had contested, while the Congress managed to only win two of the fourteen seats contested.
