During the Coimbatore Corporation Council meeting held at Victoria Hall, DMK councillors created a stir by opposing the extension of time for contractors responsible for maintaining public and community toilets. These councillors alleged that the number of toilets listed in the resolutions did not match the actual figures, which they claimed were significantly lower in reality, causing a shock to the Corporation.

The meeting addressed several resolutions, including one to transfer the maintenance of nine toilets in wards 86, 87, and 88 under the South Zone. Ahmed Kabir, the DMK councillor for Ward 86, highlighted that only three toilets exist one in each of the three wards while the resolution inaccurately listed nine. He questioned the discrepancy and argued that the resolution should be suspended due to this misinformation. R. Ranganayaki concurred and announced the suspension of Resolution No. 35.

Similarly, a resolution to extend the maintenance contract for toilets in the West Zone faced scrutiny. In Ward 74, the resolution claimed there were nine toilets, but Shankar, the ward’s councillor, clarified that only five were present. Corporation Commissioner Sivaguru Prabhakaran acknowledged the errors and assured that corrections would be made.

Coimbatore MP Rajkumar requested temporary use of part of the Coimbatore Corporation building for parliamentary office work. With no space in the central zonal offices for a private room, permission was sought to use the ‘roster’ building under the stage at 83rd Ward V.O.C. ground, with a proposed rent of 15,080 plus 18 percent service tax.

DMK councillors pushed for a rent-free allocation, while ADMK Councilor Prabhakaran opposed this, noting that the central government funds the MP’s office rent and that waiving it would be a financial loss for the Corporation. Despite the opposition, the resolution was passed.

Additionally, DMK councillor Karthik Selvaraj requested an office allocation, emphasizing that the Pollachi MP constituency includes 30 wards.

The initiative to develop Coimbatore Airport began with the DMK government’s announcement of a land acquisition plan covering 635.33 acres back in 2010. Subsequently, under the renewed tenure of the DMK government, efforts to acquire land accelerated, with a substantial fund allocation of ₹2,600 crore earmarked for this purpose. Presently, only a mere 14 acres of land remain uncultivated.

However, the Tamil Nadu government has set forth specific conditions for transferring the acquired lands to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the expansion project. Notably, the terms stipulated by the government differ if the land is transferred to a private entity instead.

Despite the majority of the land being acquired, AAI is yet to make a final decision regarding acceptance of the conditions laid out by the Tamil Nadu government. Consequently, this indecision has resulted in delays in executing the expansion project.

According to officials, the conditions imposed by the Tamil Nadu government for land transfer are unparalleled in comparison to other states, especially considering the involvement of private entities in managing certain airports across India. Therefore, careful consideration is being given to the Tamil Nadu government’s terms.

Nandakumar and Satish, Directors of the Kongu Global Forum (KGF), emphasize the urgency of expediting the Coimbatore Airport expansion project, not only for the city’s advancement but also for the broader development of the Kongu region. They urge both the central and state governments to swiftly reach a consensus. They anticipate a significant increase in passenger traffic at Coimbatore Airport, potentially reaching 7.5 million, with enhancements to runway length, infrastructure, and flight services.

Voices from among air passengers echo concerns regarding the disparity in fund allocation for airport development across different regions. While acknowledging the substantial allocation of ₹2,600 crore for Coimbatore Airport, they highlight the comparatively lesser amounts allocated for projects in Thoothukudi and Madurai. They stress the importance of government-led discussions to address these concerns and devise suitable solutions.

Coimbatore District Collector Kranti Kumarpadi acknowledges the delays in airport expansion attributed to legal challenges and various other factors. However, with all necessary land secured for the project, there are no impediments to commencing expansion activities. He assures that further steps will be taken in accordance with the decisions of the Tamil Nadu government.

The acquisition of land for the expansion of Coimbatore International Airport faces further delays, with the original completion target of March-end now pushed back to May 15 by the Revenue Department. This extension is attributed to officials’ involvement in various tasks related to the Lok Sabha elections, particularly the first phase held in Tamil Nadu on April 19.

Out of the 635.33 acres earmarked for acquisition, only about 14 acres remain pending. Among these, approximately 10 acres are categorized as open space reserve (OSR) lands, which are exempt from payment, leaving only four acres requiring acquisition. The total area includes 468.83 acres of privately owned patta lands, 28.37 acres of government-owned poramboke lands, 134.32 acres of Defense lands, and 3.30 acres belonging to other government departments. These lands are situated across Singanallur, Uppilipalayam, Kalapatti, Neelambur, and Irugur villages.

Coimbatore stands out as one of the most fiercely contested constituencies, where a battle for victory among the competing candidates is intensifying. The contenders for this seat include K Annamalai, the president of Tamil Nadu’s BJP, Singai Ramachandran representing the AIADMK, and Ganapathi P Rajkumar from the DMK. With each passing day and only a scant seven days remaining, tensions rise as words are exchanged and the political atmosphere heats up.

Traditionally seen as an AIADMK stronghold, Coimbatore has seen a shift in dynamics, with Annamalai from the BJP gaining momentum and positioning himself as a strong contender. Despite this, the DMK, led by former Mayor Ganapathi P Rajkumar and supported by Tamilnadu Industries minister TRB Rajaa, is making a renewed effort to assert its presence in the constituency. However, their attempts are being met with strong resistance from the BJP, led by state president Annamalai, who remains steadfast in his campaign.

The feud between Annamalai and TRB Rajaa has been quietly brewing for some time now. Rajaa initiated a smear campaign by labeling BJP as a cheap party and likening Annamalai to a goat, suggesting there would be a feast of goat biriyani after the elections, insinuating Annamalai’s defeat. Annamalai swiftly retaliated, attributing these actions to DMK’s anxiety and lack of substantial content.

During a recent press interaction in the Karumbukadai area, TRB Rajaa continued his criticism of the BJP. In response to a query regarding BJP candidate Annamalai’s assertion of securing a 60,000-vote lead in Coimbatore, Raja dismissed it, implying it was mere wishful thinking. He redirected attention to the AIADMK, emphasizing its role as the opposition party in the election and questioning the apparent disregard for it. Raja also mentioned plans to expose alleged anti-social elements within the BJP through their IT wing, suggesting that without such elements, the party would lack substantial strength.

During his response to the argument, Annamalai, the BJP president and candidate for MP in Coimbatore, criticized both TRB Rajaa and his father, TR Baalu, labeling them as the primary figures of antisocial elements. He pointed out their ownership of distilleries and involvement in the liquor trade within the state, asserting that liquor vendors are inherently antisocial. Therefore, according to him, TR Baalu falls under this category. He found it ironic that TRP Rajaa would make such statements while being the son of someone considered antisocial.

Annamalai said, “TRB Rajaa’s father itself an anti-social. He is a Liquor seller. The liquor seller is anti-social right brother? TRB Rajaa speaks this as being a son of an anti-social, and this is the height of comedy. Brother, Don’t think that anti-social means only those who are in FIR, some people are selling liquor wearing white and white (clothes), they are too anti-social. How many people have been made to drink and how many women’s mangalsutra are being cut, so it is a comedy today to talk about anti-social as the son of an anti-social person.

Perhaps if TRB Rajaa says that his father does not sell liquor, I will tell you in which distillery how they sell it. The same TRB Rajaa’s father went to Thanjavur during the rule of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to open a new liquor factory there and asked the people for their opinion, the peasants came, was beaten with sticks and skulls broken, even today they celebrate it as a black day in that town, as if it should never come.

Why did TR Baalu lose in Thanjavur in 2014, because of the opening Liquor factory. Why is he now sheltered in Sriperumbudur?
So that no one should know about him, As sriperumbudur is a new town can come here and live in peace. Now they are talking about anti-social. Running a liquor factory and paying lakhs of cash to TASMAC every day, killing hundreds of friends and cutting the Mangalsutra of women in their homes, if you ask he is Industries Minister… Is it no shame. Industries minister’s father runs liquor factory, father’s liquor goes to TASMAC, industries minister monitors it, what a mess. They think that in this democracy, all of them will speak and this should be heard”

Tension arose at Coimbatore briefly following an incident where an intoxicated Muslim teenager hurled stones at BJP party members during their election campaign in Shanmuga Nagar on 29 March 2024.

More than 50 BJP supporters, led by party official Arjunan, were canvassing for their candidate K Annamalai when the 18-year-old Nowsath from Kannappa Nagar began throwing stones at them. Nowsath expressed discontent, questioning the BJP’s presence in their area for vote collection, labeling it as an act of atrocity and inciting violence. He adamantly declared his opposition to their campaigning in the locality.

As a result of the stone-throwing, four party members, including two women, sustained minor injuries, with one member Prabhu requiring treatment at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The party officials promptly notified the Kavundampalayam police regarding the disturbance caused by an inebriated young man. With swift action, the police arrived at the scene and apprehended Nowsath, who was intoxicated, for further inquiry. In the inquiry it was revealed that Nowsath was affiliated with SDPI an ally of AIADMK

In this context, the Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai, has released an official statement via his X account, condemning the action that, “When the BJP brothers and sisters went to collect votes in Sanmuga Nagar area, Ward 32 of Coimbatore North Assembly Constituency, a man named Nawsath from SDPI ally of AIADMK stopped them from coming to canvass for votes, abused them and pelted them with stones. A brother named Prabhu and some sisters were injured.

This is an example of how the AIADMK alliance is afraid of defeat. People like Navshadvengage in such undesirable in such anti-democratic activities. I urge Tamil Nadu Police to take strict action against this person. BJP is a party traveling on the democratic path, our patience has a limit. I would like to give a warning that if there are similar incidents of blocking and attacking the BJP brothers and sisters who are going to canvass votes, then those concerned should be prepared to face the consequences. BJP Coimbatore District President Mr. Ramesh Kumar personally met and inquired about his health. I wish him a speedy recovery. BJP4Tamilnadu will always support Brother Prabhu.”

In the Hot climate of Coimbatore, a fierce battle is anticipated among Annamalai representing the BJP, Singhai Ramachandran from AIADMK, and Ganapathi Rajkumar of DMK.

Lately, whenever the Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai makes a statement, it quickly gains popularity in the region. Media outlets often swarm around him to boost their viewership ratings.

However, Puthiya Thalaimurai news seems to have adopted a different tactic to gain attention by twisting Annamalai’s words to spread propaganda. Puthiya Thalaimurai recently uploaded a video on its official platform with the headline “None of us came under quota system… I came with two tin boxes…” attributing to Annamalai, aiming to maximize its audience reach.

In the Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency, three strong contenders are vying for victory: Annamalai, the Tamil Nadu BJP leader; Ganapathi Rajkumar, a former mayor and DMK candidate; and Singai Ramachandran, the President of the AIADMK IT Wing. Annamalai, addressing reporters in Coimbatore on 25 March 2024, remarked, “In 2002, he (ADMK candidate Singai Ramachandran) didn’t know his father being an MLA got him a seat to study in the college using the quota benefit. AIADMK’s candidate father is an MLA, it’s dynasty politics, Govindaraj. He has come to politics using quota. I came to Coimbatore for the first time in 2002. I was wearing trousers, my father wearing a veshti, we brought two tin boxes from the village, took three buses and came to Coimbatore in 2002.

That was 22 years ago. My age was 17 years. I took a town bus from Gandhipuram bus stand and got down to Peelamedu with two tin boxes. I mean in 2002, my father and I stood in front of PSG Engineering College in Peelamedu with two tin boxes. Then I asked my father, will this town be kind to us? We all come from the village.. 40 houses in total. We reached Coimbatore by boarding three different buses. It is a big city. Will I be able to survive in this city?

Because I got an opportunity to study in PSG College of Engineering. I was not privileged, I did not get a seat through MLA quota. I came to Coimbatore in 2002 with 2 tin boxes, just as you all work hard as individuals and are in this land. I studied in PSG College of Engineering for 5 years. My wife studied in the same college and was a year junior to me. She studied in PSG College and we both got married and settled in Coimbatore. You have to understand one thing, Annamalai didn’t come in quota system.. Vanathi didn’t come in through quota system, Vanathi did not come here through quota system, Modi did not come here through quota system, no one here achieved all this through quota system.”

Just as in the past, this video title quickly caught the attention of numerous netizens, especially those inclined towards the opposition. Without even watching the video, they immediately began making statements based solely on the title, claiming that the Tamil Nadu BJP chief opposes the quota system and speaks negatively about it. It was only after others provided clarification that they deleted their posts upon gaining clarity. Among those jumping the gun include Dalit activist Shalin Maria Lawrence and political commentator Sumanth Raman.

Students from the Government Law College, Coimbatore have been protesting as their fellow students have been suspended by the college management allegedly on flimsy grounds. Despite repeated attempts to reach out to higher authorities, their demands have not been met, allege students.

A student named Haritha had completed her undergraduate law degree in May 2022. She applied for her Transfer Certificate (TC) for doing LLM. After 3 months, when she had asked for the TC, she was told by college authorities that they don’t have the TC and blamed her for not submitting the TC application.

Sheik Mohammed, the husband of Haritha is also from the same college in third year BA., LLB. He on behalf of his wife demanded her TC from the college management. But he was told by the management that they don’t have the TC and that it should be with them (the couple).

The couple also sent a complaint letter to Chief Minister cell that management authorities have misplaced the TC. Meanwhile, the college management had filed a complaint that the student Haritha and Sheik are quarrelling with them.

After one month, an enquiry committee was set up with Sheik deposed before the committe. But the committee has submitted report stating that enquiry is still pending.

Sheik Mohammed later filed a writ in the Madras High Court that there is no connection between him and the enquiry committee. The college management filed that they need 1 month to look into the matter. They also suspended Haritha and Sheik Mohammed until the case comes to a closure.

After 20 days of suspension order, the college principal filed a complaint on Sheik Mohammed saying that he attacked the college authorities and gave death threats to them. The Police filed FIR under IPC section 353, IPC section 506 (1), and IPC section 109.

The college authorities however denied providing the CCTV footage of the particular day saying that the CCTV was not working at that time.

While speaking to the reporters, a student studying 4th year LLB., in Coimbatore Law College said ”The College Management should withdraw the cases filed against two students. They should also cancel the suspension order of two students. These are our demands.”

On December 24, Bible was distributed to the Hindu students of Udhagai Gel Memorial school with the help of the school’s headmaster, in the name of Christmas celebrations. Another accusation said that on the very same day, another Christian Missionary distributed the Bible to Hindus and public waiting at the Conoor Bus Stop in Nilgiris, in an attempt to convert them. Hindu Munnani rushed to the spot on knowing about this incident, and successfully intervened to stop the proselytization attempt. The incident was reported to the local Police Station as well.

In response to this, the Hindu Munnani has decided to distribute the Bhagavad Gita in front of a Church in the area, on Christmas. A statement released by the organisation related to this decision said, “The Bible has been distributed in front of schools, bus stands and many other places in the area, on the occasion of Christmas, in an attempt to convert the public.
