In a shocking incident in Bengaluru, the body of a woman was discovered stuffed in a sack and dumped in a garbage truck. Police investigations have revealed that she was allegedly murdered by her live-in partner. The victim, identified as Asha, had been in a relationship with Mohammed Shamshuddin, who has since been taken into custody on murder charges.

The body was found by officials from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Sunday when they spotted a gunny bag containing the remains of a woman in one of their garbage trucks. Her hands were found tied, prompting immediate registration of a murder case by the Bengaluru Police. An autopsy was ordered, and an investigation began.

Surveillance footage and other leads helped the police identify the suspect as 33-year-old Shamshuddin, a native of Assam. He had been in a relationship with Asha, 40, for about 18 months. Though both were already married to other individuals and each had two children, they were living together in a rented house in Hulimavu, South Bengaluru, and presented themselves as a married couple.

Asha, a widow, was employed as a housekeeping service provider through Urban Company, while Shamshuddin worked in the delivery sector. His wife and children continue to live in Assam.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), Lokesh B Jagalasar, stated that a heated altercation between the two led to physical violence, during which Shamshuddin allegedly strangled Asha. He then transported her body on a motorbike across the city and disposed of it in a BBMP garbage truck. The entire act was captured on CCTV.

The crime took place late Saturday night, and Shamshuddin was apprehended within 20 hours. Both individuals had been working near Hulimavu, and after moving into a rental property in Chennammanakere Achukattu, they introduced themselves to the landlord as a married couple.

Investigators believe the murder may have been triggered by ongoing disputes, reportedly related to Asha’s drinking habits and long nighttime phone calls. The conflict escalated fatally on Saturday.

After committing the crime, Shamshuddin allegedly placed Asha’s body in a bag, traveled nearly 20 km by bike, and left the bag in a municipal garbage truck. CCTV recordings helped track the vehicle’s registration, leading to his arrest on Sunday night.

DCP Lokesh B. Jagalasar confirmed that the body was found around 2 am and a murder case was promptly registered based on a complaint from nearby residents.

Manjunath, the house owner, said the couple had been tenants for about six months. “They said they were husband and wife. Asha used to work at a mall, and Shamshuddin was a delivery agent. We only found out about the incident after the police arrived,” he said.

The police have confirmed a murder case and are continuing further investigations.

BJP State President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra announced that a massive protest has been planned against Karnataka Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, and the government in connection with the June 4 Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede which claimed 11 lives during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team’s victory celebrations. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, he stated that the BJP has decided to hold protests until the state government is overthrown.

“A protest is scheduled for June 13 at Freedom Park in Bengaluru. BJP workers, members of affected families, and victims of the incident will participate. Around 15,000-20,000 protestors are expected to gather,” he stated. Regarding the stampede during the RCB victory celebration, Vijayendra claimed that the RCB, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and event company DNA were not the accused parties but the Chief Minister was accused number one, the Deputy Chief Minister was accused number two and Home Minister Parameshwara was accused number three and the subsequent responsibilities lie with the RCB, KACA, and DNA. The BJP had demanded an investigation into the case by a sitting High Court judge.

However, the government handed the investigation over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). They have also ordered an investigation by a retired High Court judge. Vijayendra alleged that this was done to appoint someone they prefer, give a clean chit to the state government, blame the officials, and shirk responsibility. He demanded that if the state government has any shame, it should ensure the investigation is conducted by a sitting judge of the High Court. He emphasised that the government cannot shirk responsibility regarding the Chinnaswamy Stadium incident. Vijayendra criticised that RCB fans who threw slippers and stones near the Vidhana Soudha steps. He remarked that the leaders had a craze for selfies and popularity, and have ruined the state’s reputation. He stated that the Governor was also misled and made to sit through the event.

“Did we tell them to hold the event at Vidhana Soudha? We had requested permission for a procession. If a procession had been held, perhaps the tragedy would not have occurred,” he responded to a question. He added that they called for the protest on behalf of the fans, but questioned if the government had no responsibility. He asked, “Isn’t law and order the government’s responsibility? Is it the Opposition’s responsibility?” He mentioned that he has written an open letter to the Chief Minister with the aim of conveying the sentiments of the nation’s people to the state’s Chief Minister. Vijayendra stated that the letter was written to ensure that the CM, Dy CM, and the state government understand the feelings of the families who lost their loved ones and those who are suffering.

In a shocking case, a techie tried to commit suicide near the Governor’s residence here after alleging that he was unable to bear the torture of his wife. The incident was reported on Sunday, and the techie was identified as Junaid Ahmad.

According to police, Junaid hailed from Chikkaballapura district and tried to end his life by pouring petrol and attempting to torch himself. Police said Junaid claimed that he was being tortured by his wife. He alleged that his wife had lodged a false dowry case against him and also lodged many more cases against him.

The techie claimed that he had gone to register a complaint with the Chikkaballapura police station against his wife, but the police refused to take his complaint.

Enraged by this, the techie had decided to end his life in front of the Raj Bhavan and made an attempt. However, the police present on the spot stopped and detained him.

They took him to the Vidhana Soudha police station. After listening to his story, the police counselled and let him off, sources confirmed. On April 7, a software professional who was living separately from his wife and child for two years allegedly committed suicide as he was reportedly unable to bear the pain of separation in Bengaluru.

Earlier, in a shocking incident, a husband set himself on fire in front of his wife’s residence in the Nagarbhavi locality of Bengaluru last Thursday after he was unable to convince her to withdraw the divorce petition.

Earlier, Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash committed suicide over alleged torture and a demand of Rs 3 crore by his wife Nikita Singhania for a divorce settlement. Another case of suicide involving a police officer, allegedly due to similar reasons of torture by his wife and her family, was reported from Bengaluru on December 14, 2024.

Global pop sensation Ed Sheeran is presently in Bengaluru as part of his ongoing +–=÷× Tour (Mathematics Tour). During his visit to the city, the singer decided to go for an impromptu street performance.

The British singer arrived opposite the M G Road Metro station on Church Street, where two microphones and a guitar had been set up for the performance.

He started to perform an unplugged version of his popular track “Shape of You”. He was only a minute into his performance when a police officer arrived and disconnected the speakers to stop his performance.

According to the police, the event had to be unplugged midway as they had not attained any prior permission for the performance.

If the reports are to be believed, the police had also received a complaint of public nuisance against the singer.

After taking over Bengaluru, Ed Sheeran will be seen performing in Shillong’s JN Stadium on 12th February.

The singer’s final stop will be on 15th February at the Leisure Valley Grounds, Gurugram. In the meantime, Ed Sheeran recently flew to Chennai for his performance at the YMCA Grounds in Nandanam.

Before the concert, the singer decided to enjoy some local hospitality. A video circulated on social media, where he was seen enjoying a relaxing head massage on the streets of Chennai.

The clip featured a local masseuse rhythmically tapping Ed Sheeran’s head.

The singer was also seen making exaggerated faces as he got the massage. Netizens flooded the comment section with some hilarious reactions like, “Now we would know the reason if you forget lyrics..”, “I think it’s the revenge of all the guitars that Ed slapped during bloodstream”, “when it says “shake to wake Ted” but you took the wrong Ted”, and “This is what happens when Ed keeps teasing us without answering with any other word but soon @teddysphotos , I’m just joking, please forgive me…luv you so much.”

The death toll in the Bengaluru building collapse rose to six on Wednesday, police said.

Two people have been arrested in this connection and charged with culpable homicide, the police said.

The arrested were identified as Bhuvan Reddy, the owner of the building and contractor Muniyappa.

Bhuvan’s father, Muniraju Reddy, used to oversee the construction work of the building.

Muniraju, who is the first accused in the case, was absconding.

Thirteen people were rescued from the debris of the under-construction building that collapsed in Babusapalya near Hennur in Bengaluru on Tuesday evening.

Rescue operations were on as many more were feared trapped under the debris. The identity of the latest victim is yet to be ascertained.

The police have booked the accused under Sections 105 (culpable homicide), 125 (A) (Act of endangering life or personal safety), 125 (B) (causing grievous hurt to another person), 270 (public nuisance), 3 (5) (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) Act.

Talking to media persons, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar said, “The ongoing rain in Bengaluru did not cause the building collapse in Babusapalya. This incident occurred due to unscientific and substandard construction work. A case will be registered against everyone responsible for this incident, including the owner, the construction contractor, and officials. The reason for the collapse is the construction of a tall building on a small plot,” he said.

The deceased were identified as 26-year-old Armaan, 35-year-old Tripal, and 19-year-old Mohammad Sahil, all migrant workers from Bihar, 25-year-old Satya Raju and Shankar.

The injured were 45-year-old Jagadevi, 28-year-old Rasheed, 25-year-old Nagaraju, 28-year-old Ramesh Kumar, Ayaz, and Harman.

The injured have been admitted to Bengaluru North and Hosmat hospitals, of whom condition of one was critical.

The construction of the six-storeyed building had been underway for six months.

According to the police, iron rods were not installed in the basement, and a large quantity of rainwater had accumulated in the pit dug for the compound’s construction, which led to the tragedy.

Shivakumar said: “The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been pressured into service. The Fire Force and Emergency Services DG are on the spot with the team for the rescue operation.”

The construction labourers trapped inside the building hailed from Andhra Pradesh and Bihar.

In a chilling case of crime that has left Bengaluru and the nation in horror, the dismembered body of 29-year-old Mahalakshmi was discovered inside a refrigerator at her rented apartment in Vyalikaval, Malleshwaram on 21 September 2024. Her body, which had been cut into more than 30 pieces, was found after her mother, Meena Rana, filed a missing complaint with the police.

Mahalakshmi, a team leader at a costume outlet in Malleshwaram, had been living separately from her husband, Hemant Das, due to ongoing domestic disputes.

The police have identified a suspect allegedly named Ashraf, believed to be from West Bengal, and efforts are underway to apprehend him. Karnataka’s Home Minister, G. Parameshwara, confirmed the investigation is progressing, stating that the police have collected crucial details but cannot share them publicly. The suspect is reportedly not from Karnataka, and authorities are confident of making an arrest soon.

Mahalakshmi had filed a complaint against her husband in February, accusing him of assault, while Hemant had also accused her of having an extramarital affair. The couple had been separated for nine months, with their daughter living with Hemant in Nelamangala. The police had previously registered a Non-Cognisable Report (NCR) concerning the domestic disputes between Mahalakshmi and her husband, Hemant Das, with family members attempting to mediate and resolve the issues.

On Sunday, 22 September 2024, Hemant shared that he and Mahalakshmi had been married for six years and had a daughter. He claimed that an extramarital affair triggered the couple’s separation Mahalakshmi allegedly had with a barber from Uttarakhand. They both had an extra-marital affair, which led to the problem, and I discovered it somewhere in April-May last year. We were separated for the last nine months, and I do not know whether she was in contact with the man. He was also told not to meet her when she separated, but I did not know if he met her. For the first four months, my daughter stayed with her (Mahalakshmi), and later, she lived with me in Nelamangala,” Hemant said, as reported in Indian Express.

He also mentioned that Mahalakshmi visited Nelamangala about a month ago to see their daughter. She was calm and did not talk much about her life,” he added.

Mahalakshmi’s brother recounted, “I visited her in July and stayed with her for a few days in another house. After I left, she rented a new place and started living there.” He also mentioned that they had planned to meet on 15 August 2024 to celebrate Independence Day together. Mahalakshmi’s brother mentioned that she had been unreachable since 4 September 2024.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda, while addressing the media, confirmed that the prime suspect has been identified. However, the police are still determining whether more individuals were involved in the murder. Mahalakshmi’s body was handed over to her family following a post-mortem examination. Authorities have registered a case under Section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as the investigation continues.

The case has drawn attention to concerns over women’s safety in Karnataka. Home Minister Parameshwara assured the public that the state is continuing efforts to ensure security through programs like Nirbhaya, with measures including increased CCTV installations.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to arrest the suspect and uncover further details behind the gruesome murder.

Reminder Of Shraddha Walkar Case

In November 2022, the nation woke up to a spine-chilling murder case of Shraddha Walkar by her live-in partner, Aftab. Aftab Ameen Poonawalla and Shraddha were living in Delhi’s Mehrauli area. Both of them worked together at a call centre in Mumbai. He got to her through a dating app. The two started dating and moved in to live together. Since Shraddha’s family disapproved of the relationship, the couple eloped to Delhi.

Aftab strangled the 26-year-old Shraddha on 18 May 2022, following a heated argument as she had asked him to marry her. He then dismembered her body with a sharp weapon into 35 pieces and bought a fridge to store them. He then threw the butchered body parts at 18 different locations in Delhi over the next 18 days. To avoid being caught, he reportedly left the house in the wee hours carrying 1-2 body parts in a plastic bag.

Since Shraddha did not communicate or update her social media accounts, her concerned father came to Delhi to check her flat, which was found locked. He then filed a missing person complaint with the Mumbai police and also told them about his daughter’s relationship with Aftab, whom he suspected to be behind her disappearance. Her last location was found to be in Delhi.

In a statement, the Delhi police said that the Mehrauli Police had solved the six-month-old case and arrested Aftab for killing Shraddha, chopping her into pieces and disposing of them. Ironically, Aftab, on his social media, had shared posts positioning him as a champion of women and gay rights.

In a recent court session, Karnataka High Court Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda made very straightforward remarks while addressing law enforcement challenges in Gori Palya, a Muslim-majority area in west Bengaluru. The judge referred to the area asPakistanduring a discussion about police difficulties in maintaining order in that region.

The comments came as Justice Srishananda spoke about traffic and law enforcement issues near the Mysore Road flyover, explicitly mentioning the locality of Gori Palya. He said, Go to Mysore Road flyover, every auto rickshaw has 10 people. It is not applicable because the Mysore flyover head left to the market from Gori Palya is in Pakistan, not in India. This is the reality. No matter how strict a police officer you put there, they will be beaten up there. No channel will show this.”

A video clip of the judge’s remarks has since gone viral on social media, sparking widespread discussion. The judge suggested that police officers often hesitate to act due to fear of retaliation in these areas.

The remarks have drawn attention to concerns over the law-and-order situation in Bengaluru, with some attributing the issues to alleged political mismanagement. Critics of the ruling Congress government have accused the party of engaging in appeasement politics and failing to address problems in Muslim-majority areas like Gori Palya and Bengaluru City Market.

Alleged fact-checker Mohammed Zubair launched his dog-whistling tactics to stoke linguistic tensions in Karnataka after sharing images of a “Hindi Month Celebration” banner at the U.R Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru. His post, which seems like an attempt to incite discord, has reignited the debate over whether residents from other states in Karnataka should learn Kannada. This controversy echoes a similar discussion from 2017 when pro-Kannada activists successfully campaigned to remove Hindi signage from Namma Metro stations.

Language Dispute In Karnataka

Linguistic wars in Karnataka seem to have reached a pinnacle, as netizens from the state and outsiders debate whether people from other states living in the state/cities of Karnataka must learn the language.

Amidst this debate, several netizens shared their experiences of living in states other than their home state and shared how welcoming or unwelcoming it was (as the case may be).

This was against the backdrop of a viral 2017 post showing pro-Kannada activists removing Hindi signage at Namma Metro stations.

In 2017, a month after protests against the use of Hindi in Namma Metro, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) removed Hindi signboards from all metro stations, retaining only Kannada and English. The decision followed a letter from Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to the Centre, urging the removal of Hindi signs to respect the state’s cultural sentiments. Pro-Kannada activists, including members of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), had defaced several Hindi signs at metro stations across Bengaluru. The protests were intensified with support from the DMK faction of Karnataka, leading to the final removal of the Hindi signage.

The viral post on the removal of Hindi signage brought all the pro-Kannada netizens together who were arguing with people who felt this was a drastic move.

To add fuel to the fire, alleged fact-checker Mohammed Zubair began his dog whistling tactics. He shared a couple of photos of the ‘U.R Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru. He pointed out at the banner which read “Hindi Month Celebration

Netizens Call Out Zubair For Inciting Language Wars

It is noteworthy that Hindi Diwas is celebrated across the country in schools and various central government institutions every year. Netizens called out Zubair for his dog-whistling and potential incitement of linguistic tension in the state against the institution as well as Hindi speakers in the state.

Netizens also fact-checked Zubair on the Hindi celebrations conducted by central government institutions.

A few days ago, social media was abuzz with allegations of the Karnataka Congress members chanting ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans. This happened after the Congress candidate Syed Naseer Hussain’s Rajya Sabha victory in Karnataka was announced. A video of his supporters “allegedly” chanting ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ was circulated on social media platforms.

Alleged fact-checker Mohammed Zubair immediately jumped into action to prove that Pakistan Zindabad slogans were not raised. He claimed that instead of Pakistan Zindabad, the supporters were chanting ‘Naseer Saab Zindabad’.

The footage was analysed by a private forensic agency FSL which proved that pro-Pakistani slogans were indeed raised. The presence of these slogans was identified in both the audio and video components. The submitted report to the state government asserted that the footage remained unaltered as reported by India Today

Police arrested three people Mohammed Shafi Nashipudi, Munavar Ahmed, and Mohammed Iltaj. It has been revealed that all three of them have close ties with the Congress party.

Days after being disproved, the alleged fact-checker wrote a long post on his social media handle justifying his stand that Pro-Pakistan slogans were not raised.

He wrote, “Karnataka Police has arrested 3 individuals for allegedly raising ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans in Vidhana Soudha. The Home Minister has also given a statement confirming that Pro-Pakistan sloganeering were raised. Many want to arrest me for my tweet. But 𝐈 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐦𝐲 𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬. 𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝟏𝟎𝟎% 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨 𝐏𝐫𝐨-𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐬, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 ‘𝐍𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐫 𝐒𝐚𝐚𝐛 𝐙𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐝’.”

He twisted the narrative to prove his lies by shifting focus to the “right-wing” and the media. He continued in the same post, “We’ve seen a pattern in the X thread below of how Right Wing and the media have been accusing opponents and their supporters of raising Pro-Pakistan slogans during celebrations. Even in this case, The FALSE claim was started by Kannada News channels which were denied by many reporters present on the ground, including Smita Prakash’s colleague. She and many other RW trolls want BlrCityPolice to arrest me for starting facts. You see a pattern of how misinformation has been doing rounds in Karnataka.”

He then went on to narrate instances where media, BJP, and “propaganda news agencies” like ANI shared “fake news”.

“1. In January, the BJP and (Media including propaganda News Agency

ANI) heightened its criticism of Congress as anti-Hindu while alleging that on the orders of the state government, police personnel had removed a Hanuman flag from a flag post in the Keragodu village of Mandya. However, in reality, the flag post was on government land, on which only the national flag and the flag of Karnataka were permitted to be hoisted. But the Anti Congress Propaganda ran for more than a week on Television. Congress in Karnataka was clueless on how to counter it.

2. In Feb, After the budget, BJP leaders and Media targeted the Congress government claiming Congress took money from Hindu temples and was using it to fund religious institutions that were non-Hindu. This was run for 2-4 days. Again Congress in Karnataka was clueless on how to counter these false claims. Neither was there any FIR against people who spread this False Propaganda.

 3. After Endowment Amendment bill, BJP and Media claimed that Siddaramaiah govt began taxing Jaziya to Hindu temples by 10%. But it was under Yeddyurappa’s govt who first Amended the bill in 2011. Infact, The Akhila Karnataka Archakas (Priests) Association supported the bill in a press conference and said that small temples were short of funds, They urged the opposition BJP to support the Congress govt’s move to divert tax money from rich A grade temples to smaller temples for the uplift of 36,000 C grade temples in the state, categorized on the basis of income. But here again, BJP and Media were successful in their False Propaganda claiming Congress in Anti Hindu and Pro Muslims. Congress couldn’t counter counter their Propaganda, Nor did it take any action against fake news peddlers for amplifying these false claims.”

He concluded by saying that this was how the BJP with the help of local and national media was winning the propaganda war and also stated that “Congress in Karnataka is still clueless on how to counter it.”

Interestingly, he deleted his “fact-check” posts that gave a clean chit to “Pakistan Zindabad” slogans raised in Jaunpur, UP. He has not apologised or expressed regret for misleading the public about his mistake.

It is noteworthy that the Karnataka government in August 2023 was pondering over seeking help from Zubair’s AltNews to “combat fake news”.

In December 2023, the Karnataka government selected five firms, including Gauri Media named after murdered journalist Gauri Lankesh, for its fact-checking units to combat fake news on social media. Logically, Trylika and OW Data Leads will focus on fact-checking, analytics, and capacity building, while Gauri Media’s expertise in the Kannada language contributed to its selection. It was also announced that independent fact-checkers would also be enlisted to aid the government’s misinformation prevention efforts. Critics argue that if the likes of Zubair are enlisted, then the quality of fact-checking can be assumed to be of the level of this fact-check.
